Toman's Doctor

Summary:

A more or less progressive story about how Chifuyu managed to get Mikey's attention, became vice captain of the 1st division and ended up with the title of "Toman's Doctor".

Or just Chifuyu showing his great ability to fix the Toman members, because it seens none of them could fix themselves.

Notes:

Hi~
I'm back with one more oneshot!
I'm still finishing a chap of my fic in my other pseud (its going to be super big), but I write this pretty quickly!
(its a bajitorafuyu, go check!)

Anyway, that's just a silly thing I imagined, bc it always bothered me how none of them seem to know first aid, and objectively speaking, Chifuyu strikes me as the best match for the "official fixer of the Toman members"!

DISCLAIMER: DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!! I HAVEN'T DONE ANY REASEARCH ABOUT THOSE THINGS! DON'T ASSUME ANY OF IT IS REALLY TRUE! AND IF YOU KNOW I'M TALKING SHIT: it's fiction, let me be happy. I already said that it's possible that everything here is bullshit.

Oh, and English is not my first language
Sorry about mistakes!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It had been about four months since Chifuyu joined Toman and almost eight since he met Baji and they became inseparable.

At the moment, he was just a subordinate, although Baji consulted him before making decisions and Chifuyu was always by his side, like a true vice-captain, helping him and earning the respect of others in the division who saw him as a superior, the title was not yet his. Not officially, because for Mikey — the man who decided whether someone was suitable to be his the vice of his captains, who he'd already handpicked — Toman’s commander, you had to have a lot more than just the recommendation and friendship of one of his best friends to become the vice captain of Tokyo Manji's 1st division.

Chifuyu understood him, if the gang's positions were solely based on each other's friendship, it would be a complete disaster. Mikey had to make sure people deserved Toman's elite title, make sure they were worth it, especially with the first division, the gang’s attack.

Alright, Chifuyu was happy just being by Baji's side as a member of Toman, he didn't need a title to be liked by his peers.

Chifuyu found out very quickly that having experience with first aid endeared you to a gang, nothing like saying what someone with the flu and a bad sore throat should take to gain their friendship, or when you splint a guy’s ankle after a fight and properly bandage the wounds of the boys because they did it all wrong and it kept falling off or coming loose, little things like that.

And he didn't know how the whole gang didn't already know about his abilities, but well, the first division was just being mean and gatekeeping their little doctor all to themselves.

~°~

Things started to change when Draken showed up sick for a Toman meeting. He sneezed like crazy through the entire meeting, wiping his nose and eyes, both of them watering like he'd just been chopping onions for five hours, Mikey was really bothered by the sound as he tried to inform them of the upcoming fight to expand Toman, but Chifuyu was more concerned about Draken's itchiness and how red his face looked.

When the meeting was over, Baji was going to join Mikey and the captains, as usual, it was the only time that Chifuyu didn't follow him, because he wasn't part of that circle, so he stayed in his usual place, waiting for Baji to talk to the friends so they could go home together.

“Draken-kun looks like he has the flu” one of the guys commented curiously.

“But that itch is weird, did he use something?”

Chifuyu frowned at the disrespectful talk. Everyone knew that despite the fifth division messing with strange things, neither Mikey nor Draken liked to get directly involved with drugs and alcohol, in fact, Draken was explicitly against it, something like having already seen a lot of shit because of illegal pills and wanting to stay away from them.

There was something people didn't know about Chifuyu, something that only Baji found out from living in the same building: his mother was a doctor. Technically, she was a paramedic and worked for the Shibuya fire department, but even so, you had to have any medicine related degree to get that job, and his mother had graduated in nursing the year Chifuyu was born, the delivery was the class event and was remembered until that day by his mother's college friends.

His mother had a degree in nursing, worked as a paramedic in the fire department, she made it very clear to Chifuyu that she wasn't really a doctor and did nothing but ride around in ambulances and give people the first aid they needed so they don't pass before getting specialized and more professional help. His mother was often the hand that pulled people back from the limbo between life and death, she was the one who saved people before they reached a hospital.

I'm only capable of making splints, giving you the first essential care, nothing more.

That didn't stop Chifuyu from seeing her as a badass hero. It also didn't stop Chifuyu from growing up on nursing books, first aid courses for all sorts of things — burns, cuts, compound fractures, stabbings, gunshots, sprains — Chifuyu knew how to identify a bruise before he could even write or speak “concussion”, at the age of 10 he knew how to get people out of burning buildings, he knew how to differentiate torsion from fracture and how to put dislocated limbs back in place.

On his 11th birthday, Chifuyu was given a kit to learn how to sew sutures. He was an expert at 12 — almost 13 — now.

Chifuyu knew a long list of medicines with difficult names, what they were for and whether they needed a prescription or not.

He knew the difference between a cold and an allergic reaction.

From where he expected Baji, it was possible to see them and Chifuyu faced Draken seriously, getting a bigger ball of nervousness in his stomach each time. Draken scratched his arms and coughed a little, sniffling and wiping his eyes.

“Serious, what do you have today, Kenchin?!” Mikey screeched, irritated by all the noise from Draken, who just shrugged, "Let's go, it’s over now"

Chifuyu's instincts were going crazy, he couldn't just ignore it, Draken didn't even know what the problem was! As Baji approached with his sharp smile, Chifuyu could only look at Draken getting ready to leave with Mikey and just couldn't help himself.

“Chifuyu?” Baji called out, confused that he was practically running towards him and then going straight past him, “Chifuyu!”

“Draken-san!” Chifuyu knew better than to call him in a disrespectful way, "Has anything changed in your routine?"

Draken looked at him with furrowed brows, "Huh?"

“Baji, come get your subordinate.” Mikey snapped, angry. He didn't like little fish talking to Draken, possessive as he was.

Chifuyu gave him a glare, one that he would never have given Mikey if he didn't have all the alarms in his brain going on at that moment, "Draken-san, you sneezed and coughed a lot today, and your eyes are watering."

“It's just a cold,” Draken replied, shrugging.

It was the height of summer and Draken had no pollen allergy!

“Chifuyu, don't worry too much about Ken, he's strong” Baji assured, putting an arm around his shoulders.

“Like you know the difference between a wet cough and a dry one” Chifuyu was sharp, he hated that people looked down on his nursing knowledge, it was something he was proud of because it was his mother who taught him, “It's not a cold. I can tell by the way your face is red and you've been scratching yourself, can you show me your arm?"

Draken looked at Mikey, who seemed interested in how determined Chifuyu seemed to say what exactly Draken had, then he turned to Baji who shrugged his shoulders and said, "Chifuyu here is very stubborn about his friends' health."

Draken didn't consider himself Chifuyu's friend and the same was true the other way around, but Chifuyu didn't say anything and Draken sighed, shaking his head and taking off his Toman jacket, as he said, "Honestly, I don't understand why-"

Baji held his breath, then exclaimed, “Fuck. Ken, you look like a tomato!”

Draken wore a white shirt underneath, and all the skin Chifuyu could see had two types of redness: nail lines, a pale fading red, and darker spots in a simple pattern.

Chifuyu shook his head, "Can I see your abdomen?"

Draken did so without much questioning, they also had red spots, Chifuyu sighed, that's how he thought.

Mikey grabbed the collar of his jacket suddenly, bringing him the closest he's ever gotten to Mikey in his entire life, “What's wrong with Kenchin? How did you knew?!"

“Mikey!” Draken scolded, "Let him go!"

"It's an allergic reaction" Chifuyu said, even though his legs were shaking, it was better to answer before Mikey got really angry, "I already had it, so I know"

Fucking hell he was saying his mother was a paramedic for the leader of a gang who was always avoiding hospitals. Mikey released him and Chifuyu turned to Draken.

“Has anything changed in your routine?” he went back to the original question. Draken glared at him and Chifuyu had to elaborate, “Someone with strong perfume? A new food you've tried? Perhaps a daily product from a different brand?”

“What the hell does that have to do with it?” Baji grumbled, but fell silent when Chifuyu looked at him, reminding him of his mother.

“Well…” Draken thought, bringing his hand up to scratch his arm, but Chifuyu glared at him and he stopped his action and scratched his throat, “Not that I know of? I did the same stuff as usual and didn't eat anything weird."

Nothing new then. Chifuyu continued, “When did the itching start?”

“When I showered today…” Draken replied, frowning, “My uniform. I washed it at Mikey's last time!”

“But we use the same old soap Kenchin” Mikey said with his arms crossed.

Chifuyu shook his head, “He might have developed an allergy to the soap, it happened to me. One day I could eat as much honey as I wanted, the next I had anaphylactic shock."

"Can you develop allergies like that?" Baji asked, confused.

“Yes, your body can fail to assimilate the substance correctly and act aggressively.” Chifuyu explained, giving a final sigh, "Buy an antiallergic, one for rhinitis should work and try to find out exactly what gave you the allergy, it can get worse if you continue to be exposed to the substance."

Draken nodded, Chifuyu continued, “A cold shower will help with the itchiness, don't scratch the spots, it might make it worse! If you have problems with prescriptions, go to Baji-san's house. I live in the same building and Mom can help you with that. Or only if things get worse.”

Draken nodded, "Thanks, Chifuyu"

“It was no big deal, sorry if I was intrusive” Chifuyu bowed once to Draken and once to Mikey, before grabbing his captain's arm, “See ya! Come on, Baji-san! Mom said she will be home early today!”

Mikey watched Chifuyu drag Baji away with a grimace, Draken draped his jacket over a single shoulder and smacked Mikey, teasing him, "He's more interesting than he looks."

"Tsc. Come on, Kenchin!"

~•~

On a rainy day during a fight, the captain of the fourth division, Smiley, was fighting eighth people by himself. If it wasn't for the storm that was falling making the floor slippery, that wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't have slipped and his foot wouldn't have gotten in a weird angle.

Chifuyu didn't see it happen, but as soon as Toman's victory was announced, one of his teammates ran up to him and said in a haunted voice, "Smiley's foot is out of place!"

Well, Chifuyu obviously ran.

Angry was at his twin side, supporting him as Mitsuya tried to see how his foot was doing, but there was a lot of rain and they could barely see their own hands.

"Mitsuya-san, we have to get him inside" Chifuyu shouted as soon as he reached their side, "I can take care of his foot if I can fucking see !"

Mitsuya looked up to Chifuyu, having discovered his nursing skills after hearing some gossip from the subordinates. Mitsuya got up and shouted to everyone, "Let's disperse! Help Angry get Smiley inside!"

Chifuyu took the opportunity to tell someone from the 1st division to gather anyone who needed medical help to have them evaluated, he knew it would be a long queue but Chifuyu would be fine.

Now inside an abandoned warehouse, with hideous lighting and negative sterilization that would put a professional doctor in a coma, Smiley was laid on the floor and Chifuyu crouched beside his left ankle, it had a funny position. Examining the spot with gentle yet painful fingers, Chifuyu sighed in relief, "Dislocated, it's definitely going to need rest…"

"But it's crooked!" Angry shouted, grabbing his brother's hand, "Stop thinking about rest and think about how to put his foot in place!"

Chifuyu sighed, nodding, "I know. Where are Baji-san and Draken?"

At that moment, the founders of Toman enter the warehouse, approaching Smiley. Mikey looked at him with concern, "We should get him to a hospital."

"Ugly little thing, hah" Baji commented, shivering at the thought of having that happening to him.

"We can't, they'll know we're fighting and they'll call the cops" Chifuyu refuted, Mikey could be the leader of Toman, but Chifuyu knew medical protocol, "Besides, I can put it in place."

Draken furrowed his brows, "Chifuyu, recognizing an allergy is a lot different than putting a bone back in place"

"Look, trust me, all right?" Chifuyu asked, almost begging. Draken wasn't convinced, so Chifuyu looked at Baji with all the big eyes he knew Baji would melt to, because Chifuyu looked like a cat, "Baji-san, please… Hold him down for me?"

Baji snorted, embarrassed that Chifuyu had pulled off such a dirty trick, "Chifuyu knows what he's doing!"

Mikey didn't believe that, frowning to the obvious simp, "Oh yeah?"

Then, suddenly, someone shouted from the background, "It's Chifuyu-kun who rocks us after fights! He knows a lot about first aid!"

One more, a guy he knew was from his division, "Chifuyu-kun was the one who stitched up a nasty cut of mine!"

"Chifuyu-kun already put bones in place, he knows what to do!"

Hearing the words of his loyal 1st Division subordinates and Baji's confident smile, Mikey nodded, not truly convinced, but agreeing, "Take care of him then."

Baji and Draken were responsible for holding Smiley in place, while Angry holded his head and helped him calm down. Chifuyu did what he had to do, he could almost see the bones in front of his eyes as he ran his fingers, he pressed, he investigated, he knew exactly how to push back.

"Not gonna lie, it's going to hurt like hell" Chifuyu said, putting one hand on his heel and the other on his foot, taking a firm stance, "Take a deep breath. Hold him firm." he scolded when he saw Draken and Baji relaxed under Smiley's body.

"Okay, let's go. On three." Chifuyu took a deep breath, he knew what to do, but he could still feel afraid of tearing Smiley's ligaments, which would make him truly fucked up in Toman, "One, two-"

Crack!

Smiley's scream filled the warehouse like the howl of a beast in pure pain. He almost convulsed, that's why Chifuyu asked them to hold him, he couldn't take a hit with so many others he needed to take care of now.

"Motherfucker! BITCH! Why not on three?!" Smile screamed through his tears.

"Sorry, mom taught me to do everything before the patient noticed" Chifuyu said, getting to his feet and brushing his wet hair back, "Don't over exert yourself for the next week, and if your foot still hurts, go to the hospital and get an X-ray. Foot fractures suck to identify without an X-ray"

Angry and Smiley nodded, despite everything, Draken and Baji let go of Smiley and got to their feet, Baji slapped Chifuyu on the back, smiling.

"I'm proud, Chifuyu!" Baji said.

"It was impressive." Draken nodded, shaking his head, "How did we not know you were so good at this?"

Chifuyu smiled a little and shrugged, "I don't know, I never made a point of hiding it, but I also don't go around screaming to the whole gang…"

At that moment, Mitsuya approached again, "How is Smiley?"

"Chifuyu put his foot in place! Isn't he amazing?" Baji exclaimed, all smiles.

Mitsuya looked at the impressed pair of twins, shaking his head, "Chifuyu, I have some guys that are a little screwed up. Can you take a look and see if they didn't break anything?"

Chifuyu nodded, "Of course, I had already planned to check who was feeling in the bad sore category"

"And there's a good one?" Mitsuya frowned.

"Well, there's a difference between the normal pain after a fight and the 'I think I broke a bone' kind of pain, you know?"

Mitsuya nodded, and so the two headed away from the trio. Baji cooed over to Mikey, elbowing him excitedly.

"What's up, Mikey? What do you think of Chifuyu?" Baji asked teasingly.

Mikey had his eyes narrowed, watching Chifuyu examine one of Mitsuya's men.

"He is something." Mikey conceded, but there wasn't much emotion in the statement, "Maybe your wish will come true"

Baji practically jumped for joy.

Draken snorted, watching as Chifuyu began to lecture a guy twice his size — not only that, but his superior — for causing stress to an old muscle strain, "He's already untouchable and hasn't even noticed."

Mikey looked at Draken with a frown, Draken rolled his eyes, "Don't be such a brat, Mikey. Someone with that much medical knowledge is precious as fuck."

"Chifuyu will be the only one in Toman that no one will dare to piss off!" Baji exclaimed, laughing and agreeing with Draken's thought.

Mikey didn't disagreed with them.

~°~

"Commander."

Chifuyu bowed a perfect 90 degrees. An extremely formal greeting for Mikey, because Chifuyu was nothing more than one of Toman's soldiers.

Chifuyu was a mess, hair disheveled, blood from the fight everywhere and there was a cut on his eyebrow which he hid very well for the last hour while checking on the more injured guys. No fractures or dislocated limbs today, just some fucked up knuckles, bruises and cut lips, basic delinquent stuff.

"Draken asked me to check on you." Chifuyu kept talking, since Mikey didn't answer him and looked very concentrated looking at the moon from where he was sitting on the wall.

Fortunately, that got Mikey's attention, "Kenchin?"

Chifuyu nodded, "Draken said you had an injured hand and asked me to look, just in case."

Mikey looked at him for a moment, then nodded. Chifuyu thought it would be more difficult, Mikey could be very stubborn and as he almost never got hurt — to hurt Mikey it was necessary to get close to him, it happened once every handful of fights, when many jumped on him — when he did, it would be tricky for Draken to take a look at what would turn out to be a very ugly bruise.

With Mikey seated, Chifuyu left the first-aid kit in the corner, turned on the flashlight and held it between his teeth.

Mikey used his hands a lot in the fight on some asshole who dared to put Emma's name on his tongue. Mikey might seem indifferent to the world and the people in it, but he was extremely protective and attached to his family and closest friends, and he completely lost his mind if any of them were threatened. So of course he beat that guy until his face was a swollen, bloody mess, until his hands were like this, just as bad.

On visual analysis and with his bare hands — that must have hurt like hell, but Mikey didn't even shiver — his bones looked intact, Chifuyu couldn't say the same for the skin on his knuckles.

They were swollen and red, hot. Bruises concentrated in the places most affected by rage and contact with the enemy's skull. There was blood, his skin cracked. The right was three times worse than the left.

Chifuyu did his work quietly, quickly and diligently. He cleaned the blood with water from his bottle, used the antiseptic wipes, applied medicine, ointment, put gauze on the worst knots and bandaged Mikey's hand, the fingers separated, like a glove, he still had the movement of the fingers, a little hard, but had.

Chifuyu just put some pokemon bandages on the fingers of his left hand.

"Ready!" Chifuyu announced, proud of his work.

Mikey looked down at his hands, "Thanks."

Chifuyu didn't expect more than that, he didn't have high hopes about getting Mikey's favor and becoming vice-captain, he just smiled when Baji mentioned it but never agreed or disagreed. Mikey was difficult to understand.

That's fine, Chifuyu would be putting out Baji's little fires all over Tokyo anyway.

"How do you know so much?" Mikey asked suddenly.

Chifuyu glared at him, then turned his head to continue discarding what was no longer sterile and tucking away the rest, "My mom. She's a paramedic."

Mikey didn't say anything for a while, Chifuyu didn't like the silence, "She works at the fire station. I grew up with sirens, cleaning products, medicine and anatomy books."

Mikey shook his head, "She looks nice"

Chifuyu nodded, smiling, "My mom is a fucking badass."

~•~

The next time Toman fights, Chifuyu has a new nickname: "Toman's Doctor". It started to spread from the day Chifuyu put Smiley's foot back in place and nursed everyone injured from the fight to exhaustion. With the news spread, the members of the 1st division showed their enormous jealousy towards the unofficial vice captain and made sure that only those who were in a deplorable state were checked by him.

A very demanding screening center and definitely not neutral, but it helped Chifuyu not have to see more than twenty members every night.

Seriously, they were asking for help with things so stupid that Chifuyu almost asked Mikey for permission to give them a first aid lecture.

Chifuyu didn't, but he taught Mitsuya and Hakkai how to identify fractures and many others how to make proper splints and dressings. Chifuyu also made crowdfunding so that they could buy a first-aid kit — a very large one — for those who were worse off after the fights.

In general, everyone took his title very seriously and Chifuyu needed to make it very clear that his skills were first aid and nothing else, at best he could suture simple cuts, but if it was something deeper, he would send them to the hospital immediately and Chifuyu corrected them several times about his mother.

"She's not a doctor. She has a degree in nursing, but she's running around Shibuya in an ambulance. She's the first instance, the first aid to stop someone from dying until it's in capable hands. I can't heal a fracture. I can't stop a hemorrhage."

It took a while, but everyone had the words engraved in their heads.

Unfortunately, his doctor title became known to the other Shibuya gangs as well.

Chifuyu had just put Mitsuya's shoulder back in place, he was his last patient of the night. Toman had a feud with another gang to settle today, but who knew they got a few extra guys and attacked them from behind in a dirty fight?

Okay, Toman won despite the difference in men, but not without casualties. There were guys with sprained ankles and broken arms, eyes puffed up like tennis balls, some were beaten with pieces of metal and stomped on after falling. There was no one really comparable to Mitsuya's strength or above, but there were so many of them that even Draken had a black eye.

Mikey watched his wounded men with those dark, scary eyes. Although Toman won the battle, they didn't win the war, they still needed to beat up the rival gang and Mikey needed to tear their leader apart.

For that day, they were quiet, resting, and the captains gathered to decide how to do what they needed to do. Chifuyu continued with his daily duties, school, helping Baji, listening to Baji, giving advice, waiting at the bottom of the stairs while Baji was in a meeting because he wasn't officially a vice captain and couldn't participate in the meetings even as a viewer.

Chifuyu decided to go buy some snacks, as he always did after the inner circle's private meetings, Baji was always hungry after them and Mitsuya, Hakkai and the twins found themselves joining them, then came Pah and Peh, and when Mikey saw snacks, he raced to them with Draken. The only one who never joined was Mucho, at least not actively, he still waited with Sanzu, so he could eat behind the human wall that Mucho made himself out to be.

It got to the point where everyone told Chifuyu their favorites and gave their share money, Chifuyu had the list memorized and once the usual time had passed, he left for the nearest convenience store.

Unfortunately, he never made it, as ten men of the gang Toman was fighting were waiting for the perfect moment to ambush him.

"Look! If it isn't 'Toman's doctor!'"

One of them laughed in his face, Chifuyu stayed serious and composed to the fullest, he didn't think he could win against ten alone, he wasn't a monster like Baji-san, but he could still manage to outmaneuver them.

Another guy came over, hovering over Chifuyu, "Neee, how can a brat like that be considered a doctor, ha?"

"Nah, he must only know how to do some bandages and the brats were impressed!" With that speech, they burst into laughter.

"He must be weak to be considered the doctor!"

Chifuyu looked at everyone who stood too close, ready to defend himself, they had weapons with them — pieces of wood and a metal pipe — Chifuyu was one of the few to only get a few bruises from the last fight, nothing unusual, they were humans after all, and Chifuyu wasn't about to be rendered unusable by some foul scheme.

He was Toman's doctor, he had to be on the front line to help anyone who was injured. He couldn't do that if he wasn't strong and could protect himself./

The one who was leading that rogue operation seemed to be able to read the hatred in his eyes, Chifuyu was in a strong position and ready to defend himself. He laughed, full of scorn, "That's only one way to find out"

Chifuyu didn't get beaten, not at first. He fought back, but was outnumbered. Damn, they were at least 20 years old and they were fighting a kid using iron bars, that said a lot about their character and confidence in their own strength, at least Chifuyu didn't need to use dirty tricks to knock someone down, but when the iron bar he hit the back of his neck and the wood hit him on the right side of his head, first his vision darkened, then he felt the blood.

Then he fell. Lastly, his body shut down in the next few seconds of blows.

Chifuyu woke up in a hospital bed.

"Chifuyu! You woke up!" Baji exclaimed, alerting the other Toman members in the room, "Damn it, Chifuyu I was so worried! I-"

"Baji, he just woke up. Relax." Mitsuya pulled Baji back, slapping him on the back, "Sorry, Chifuyu. But you scared the shit out of us"

"Watch the mouth. This is a hospital" Draken scolded, standing on the other side of Chifuyu's bed, Mikey right beside him.

Chifuyu felt sore, but sat up in the bed anyway, "How did I get here?"

Baji and the others looked at each other, there were only the four of them there, given the strong artificial light, it must have been night, the others must have gone home.

It turned out that Draken was the one who explained it, "After the meeting we were going to meet you for snacks. We didn't find you, so we decided to go to the convenience store. We found you on the way."

Baji nodded several times, almost clutching the bed in his agitation, "You looked like a pool of blood, man! When Taka didn't know where to start checking you, I kind of panicked and called auntie."

Chifuyu didn't shake his head because it was painful, but he understood the situation they were in, Baji-san was good at fighting, not with medicine or things that needed the brain, and considering how Chifuyu was feeling, it was a good thing he called a ambulance, but damn, did it have to be his mother?

"Auntie came running and brought you to the hospital, they did a lot of tests and gave you medicine" Baji explained, a little nervous, "Dude, it's like your bones are made of iron because they didn't break with how badly you were beaten! But the worst thing is your eye and the muscle pain. Oh right, you're going to be a prune for the next few days"

Chifuyu sighed, feeling tired just listening to it all, he took a moment to say something, "Huh, ok. What's with my eye?"

"You narrowly avoided surgery. You might have low vision in your right eye forever" Mitsuya explained. They all looked very tense about it.

Chifuyu didn't mind too much, it would suck, but he could live with it, "Did they give me morphine?"

"Something like that" Draken shrugged.

He nodded. His mother was called, took him to the hospital and after all the tests, Chifuyu finally woke up from the medication, by the time she should have run home to change her work clothes and left Baji and the others as personal security so she could go out more calm, on other occasions, Chifuyu would have gotten out of his hospital bed, but he didn't have the strength.

"When will the fight be?" Chifuyu suddenly asked.

Mitsuya and Draken frown, disapproving his question. Baji didn't like it either, "Chifuyu, you can barely stand. You'll be resting for the day, you won't be able to fight, right, Mikey?"

But Mikey just looked at Chifuyu, who stared back at him. Chifuyu had the best determined look he could muster right now, "I have to return their favor."

The commander nodded, understanding, "The fight is in three days."

Chifuyu nods in thanks, but Draken doesn't approve of any of that, "No way, he's all screwed up, Mikey!"

"You heard him, Kenchin. It's important to get even, you know?" Mikey said with a small smile.

"That doesn't even make sense!" Baji yells, absolutely disgusted, "Chifuyu won't go!" he yells at Mikey and then points the finger at Chifuyu, "You can't!"

"Baji-san, I'm not that hurt. It's just my eye, I'll be fine until tomorrow" he wouldn't, it would hurt even more the next day, but in three days? Ah, he'd be fine enough, "Besides, Mitsuya-kun may have learned a bit about identifying fractures, but I'm still Toman's doctor. My duty is to be on the front lines with you and make sure no one dies while I'm on the clock."

Baji was touched by Chifuyu's loyalty and hugged him right there, despite the boy's growl's of pain. Mitsuya found his devotion cute, but stupid. Draken didn't hit him because Chifuyu was already chipped enough. Mikey approved of their brotherhood and determination.

Mama Matsuno was not happy at all, but understood that his son was attacked for no reason — kind of.

At the end of that day, Mikey managed to verify that yes, Chifuyu's mother was fucking badass.

~°~

The fight was over, Toman won. It was a quick and easy fight, almost an extermination.

The first division was enraged and Baji was out of control, a fire at it's absolute fullest, causing many others in his division to grow bigger. No one was happy to hear that their little medic and almost-vice-captain had been cornered by ten men with weapons, and it was an understatement to say that Baji turned every one of those who beat Chifuyu into jelly — information he could only get by manipulating a poor and confused Chifuyu drugged by morphine.

Chifuyu wasn't able to fight much, but he still took care of any crooked nose or cuts, scratches and dislocations alongside one of his 1st division senpais and Hakkai.

But as soon as it all got to be too much and the world started blurring, Chifuyu could no longer distinguish the items in the first aid box and that was the signal Hakkai had to call his captain and Chifuyu's.

"He's fainting!" Hakkai shouted for one of them to hear.

"I don't-" Before Chifuyu could finish, he felt a twinge in his head, just after effects of the blow from days ago. But soon, Baji was on his side, supporting him, "I'm fine, really-"

"Chifuyu-kun, please don't force yourself to take care of us" the guy Chifuyu was splinting his wrist said, "The 1st division, no, I think most of Toman fought harder today because of you. You are always looking after us until exhaustion after the fights, and you even came injured to fix us... Please, get some rest. We can manage from here."

Chifuyu pursed his lips, displeased, "I am fine. I can-"

"There's no one seriously injured, the others you can check tomorrow" Mikey said, and Chifuyu felt frustrated, despite knowing that he wasn't well, he was sure that he made a new injury on the already very recent in his ribs and nothing else made sense in his vision, "Baji! Take care of your vice-captain properly!"

That's how Mikey announced his new position.

Of course, it was made official at a later meeting, but Mikey told them right then and there. Baji was so happy that he released Chifuyu, jumping up like a kangaroo and screaming from victory — like Chifuyu didn't have been the one to do all the work of getting on the radar of the commander — with the sudden lack of support, Chifuyu started to plummet and his rescuer was Hakkai, who grabbed his arm just in time.

Mitsuya and Draken hit Baji on the head at the same time, "Mikey said take care of him, asshole!!"

Baji groaned in pain, “Ouch… I will!”

Well, Baji did. He helped Chifuyu up and they went home. It was an adventure getting Chifuyu on the bike, but they managed to work. With their moms at work, Baji decided to spend the night at the Matsuno house. They got the worst of the mess off and changed clothes, Baji changed Chifuyu's bandages, and they shared a yakisoba.

It was kinda obvious as Baji never stopped smiling, almost humming. Chifuyu couldn't resist the curiosity of asking him why.

“I'm happy” Baji says, throwing Chifuyu's thick duvet over them. Divide the bed turned habit, exactly how to split a yakisoba, "I knew that you were going to make it, Chifuyu. I knew you were going to become my deputy.”

“How can you be so sure? Mikey didn't like me” Chifuyu grumbled tiredly.

“Nah, Mikey has that shit face every day” Baji laughs, making Chifuyu's body rumble, “Overall it's my fault. Mikey looked at you weird because I asked him to consider my choice.”

Chifuyu frowned, at least one was visible, Baji had made the bandage too tight, “Choice?”

“I knew from the moment I saw you fight that I wanted you as my vice, Chifuyu. Seeing how you took care of the guys just made me more determined about it.” Baji explained, “You only had to prove your worth to our boring president”

It was a surprise, really, Chifuyu knew that Baji kept asking Mikey to make him his deputy, but knowing that he was so resolute about it left him baffled. Baji turned off the lamp and moved closer. Chifuyu's bed was good for one person, but it was easily cramped with two.

“Leave it alone. You should rest." Baji scolded, staring at him until Chifuyu nodded, tired out.

"Right, good night…"

Baji gave him that toothy grin, it was dark, but Chifuyu could still see it. Big and bright, incredible, Chifuyu would be resigned to that and become comfortable, it was better like this, he could think about the small details of Baji's actions when he didn't feel like a tractor ran over him five times.

When Chifuyu fell asleep, Baji was already snoring.
