Work Text:
“Forty under Forty, hey?” Will smirked, taking the magazine from Connor’s hands to see for himself. He smiled to himself when he saw the picture of his boyfriend staring back at him. God, he was lucky.
“I guess so,” Connor said, shoving his keys and wallet into his bag.
“Looks like I’m dating a celebrity now.” Will leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Connor’s neck, placing a kiss onto his lips.
“Hardly, but if it means I get more of this, I won’t be complaining,” he said, kissing Will again. He smiled as he pulled back, glancing over at the clock in his apartment. “Alright, sunshine, we should get going. I’ll buy us coffee on the way.” He turned away, zipping up his backpack and throwing it over his shoulder.
“Fine, but we’re finishing this later,” Will winked, following Connor out the door and pulling it shut behind him.
—
“Two low-fat lattes for takeaway, thanks,” Connor spoke, pulling out his card to pay for the coffees. Will had gotten to the point where he didn’t protest when Connor offered to pay for things, especially when it was something as small as a coffee in the morning before work. He knew arguing wouldn’t get him anywhere and he didn’t mind being spoiled by his boyfriend sometimes.
“Coming right up,” said the woman serving them, a friendly smile on her face. She looked up from the screen she was taking their order on and let out a gasp, slightly startling the men. “Oh my God, you’re Dr. Rhodes, aren’t you? I read about you in the Forty under Forty issue this morning. Very impressive stuff.”
Connor smiled back, fairly embarrassed about the attention he was receiving. To be entirely honest, he wasn’t sure many people would even read the magazine, let alone recognise him specifically. After all, there were thirty-nine other people on the list. “Oh, yeah, thank you.”
“Are you free for dinner sometime?” She asked, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Will couldn’t help but let out a short laugh. The woman turned to look at him with a glare. If anything, he should be the one glaring after he just watched her ask out his boyfriend. Before Connor had the chance to answer, they were interrupted by the sound of Will’s phone ringing. He pulled it out of his pocket and saw the caller ID was Maggie.
“Shit, Maggie’s calling, must be serious. Bring the coffee to me at work?” Will asked.
“Yeah, no stress. Do your thing,” Connor smiled. Will leaned in and gave Connor a quick kiss on the lips before turning foot and leaving the cafe in a rush. He supposed that answered the woman’s question. He turned back to face her and caught a look of embarrassment on her face as she realised she was flirting with him in front of his own boyfriend. He simply gave her a shrug and walked over to the other side of the counter to wait for the coffees.
—
Connor walked into work, two coffees in hand and immediately found Will leaning over the bench talking to April.
“Everything alright here?” Connor interrupted, handing the coffee to Will who accepted it with a grateful smile.
“Yeah, sure is Dr. Forty under Forty,” April teased, a smirk playing on her face. Connor looked down and saw that Will and April were currently flicking through the magazine. He rolled his eyes at them.
“You’re obsessed,” he said pointedly at his boyfriend as he took a sip of his coffee.
“What? Am I not allowed to show off my hot surgeon boyfriend?” He giggled, resulting in yet another eye roll from Connor. April looked between them, making gagging noises.
“I’m happy for you guys and all, but you’re both super gross,” she said, causing the two men to laugh.
“Yeah, whatever, you’re just jealous,” Will said, sticking his tongue out at her like a little child, only for her to do the same back. Connor and Will walked off to the break room together as Will updated him on the situation this morning that meant he had to rush into work.
“Yeah, it was just a broken wrist but the woman was insistent that she needed surgery,” Will recounted. “Asked for you specifically, actually.” Connor turned to him, confusion written all over his face. “You know her? Her name was Dana Jones, I think.”
Connor just shook his head. “No clue, name doesn’t ring a bell.”
“Probably just some random woman who’s seen you around the hospital,” Will said, shaking it off. But that’s when it hit Connor. The article. Maybe this woman saw the article and found a way to get herself into the hospital just to see him. As crazy as it sounds, he’s seen a lot worse in the ED and something like this wouldn’t surprise him.
“Or maybe she’s someone who happened to read an article this morning. Where is she now?” Connor asked, more of a demand than a question.
“T4, why? Are you going to see her? Do you really think it could be related to this Forty under Forty thing?”
“I don’t know,” Connor shrugged. “Possibly, I mean who else has come in here before today and asked for me by name? Maybe she liked what she saw.”
“I sure did,” Will muttered.
“Well lucky for you, sunshine, you get what you saw. She, on the other hand, will not.” Connor walked out of the room in the direction of treatment room four. He needed to see this woman.
—
“Miss Jones, how are you?” Connor asked, walking into the room with a welcoming smile. Will followed just behind him. After all, this was his patient and although it wasn’t exactly professional, he wanted to see where this would go.
“Oh, hi,” Dana said, fluttering her eyes at the surgeon. Will let out a scoff, luckily quiet enough that Dana didn’t seem to hear it, but Connor sure did. “To what do I owe the pleasure, Dr. Rhodes?”
“My colleague here, Dr. Halstead,” Connor paused, motioning to Will in the corner, “Said you’ve broken your wrist and although you’ve been told it doesn’t require surgery, you’re insisting on it.”
“Oh, yeah, about that,” Dana laughed and Will was suddenly angry. This girl just walked into the hospital, acting all sweet and innocent, hoping to charm her way into a date with his boyfriend. He was furious. Will defensively crossed his arms over his chest, not caring if Dana thought he was being rude, because quite frankly, he didn’t care. “I was just hoping to see you. Maybe the doctor made a mistake, this break feels more serious than he is letting on.” She eyed in on Will as if she knew he was the competition, and oh boy, she had no idea.
“Will all due respect, Dana, can I call you Dana?” Connor asked.
“Yes, yes, of course, Dr. Rhodes.”
“Dana, I trust Dr. Halstead's work. Your charts also state that another nurse has supported Will’s evaluation in this case. I really don’t believe surgery is in the question.” Connor looked down at the watch on his wrist. “I do need to see another patient now, but what do you say I come down and check up on you once they’ve put the cast on?”
“That sounds perfect. I can’t wait,” she smiled her little manipulative smile. Connor smiled back and walked out of the room, patting Will on the shoulder as he left. Will sighed and walked towards Dana to check up on her.
“How are you feeling, Miss Jones?” He asked routinely.
“Cut the crap, I know you’re interested in him too.” Although her accusation was ill-mannered, to her credit she was spot on. Considering nobody else in the ED seemed to have any idea he and Connor were dating until they announced it, she was quick to point that out, especially since neither of them were acting even remotely ‘ couple-like ’ in front of her.
“Excuse me?”
“I saw the way you looked at him, then how you looked at me when he was obviously flirting with me. You were jealous. At first I thought maybe you were into me and you were just jealous that I liked him instead, but then I saw how you reacted to him touching your arm. You immediately relaxed at his touch. It’s a textbook crush. Sadly, an unrequited one, as he was clearly into me. I mean, he agreed to come see me again. Maybe I’ll ask him out then.” God, this girl was delusional. Will didn’t know whether he wanted to laugh, scream or slap the woman.
“That was quite the analysis, are you a detective?” Will asked with a cocky smirk.
“No, I analyse and study body language,” she said with a hint of arrogance in her tone.
“That’s a thing?” Will asked. This had to be some sort of a joke.
“Yes, I am quite good at it, actually.” Will wanted to laugh in her face because she could not have been more wrong with her so-called ‘analysis’. Yes, she did recognise that Will had a thing for Connor, but she also thought it was unrequited and that Connor was flirting with her. So overall, she was wrong.
“Well, I happen to know Dr. Rhodes is seeing someone and it is serious. Sorry to disappoint.”
Dana let out a cackling laugh and Will thought that she sounded a bit like a cartoon witch. Either he was very gay, or she was just extremely unappealing. “You think I would believe that? I could see the way he was looking at me. I bet you’re just trying to throw me off my tracks so you have a better shot with him. Although, he is very clearly straight so unfortunately for you, he’s all mine.”
Will paused. He knew she was wrong but suddenly he was angry with Connor. Was he flirting? Did Will not realise? He immediately excused himself and left the room, running into Connor on the way out.
“She’s a charmer,” Connor laughed, shaking his head.
Will was definitely angry. He didn’t exactly have a reason to be, but he was. “Yeah, you would know,” he replied, rolling his eyes and storming off, leaving Connor standing there confused.
—
Will was angry and he wanted to get back at Connor. He knew he had little to no reason to be angry, but he didn’t care. Since the consult with Dana that morning, Will had been ignoring Connor, shooting him daggers across the ED when their eyes met. He decided the best way to get back at Connor was to simply show him how it felt to watch his boyfriend flirt with another person, specifically a woman. He didn’t know exactly how to go about this, but opportunity struck when he noticed one of the student doctors looking over her notes at Maggie’s desk. He decided to walk over to her and subtly flirt while Connor was watching on.
“Hey,” he smiled, announcing his presence. The student doctor, Becky, looked up and smiled back at him, immediately returning her attention to her notes again.
“Hi, Dr. Halstead. Anything I can help you with?”
“Uh.” Will didn’t really plan out what he was going to say, so he decided to wing it. “Uh, no, just coming to say hi. We haven’t really spoken outside of a work context. Maybe we could grab some drinks after work one day this week? You know, get to know each other?” He offered. Becky finally looked up from her notebook and stared at Will, giving him a polite, yet confused smile.
“Um, sure? Maybe some other time, though, I am swamped.” She seemed hesitant, maybe even a bit confused. To be fair, Will would’ve been confused too if she suddenly asked him out for drinks.
“Oh yeah, no pressure. You can just let me know if you want to. I’ll, uh, leave you to it,” he said, awkwardly raising his hand in some sort of salute. She smiled again, nodding her head and returning to her work. Will walked off, internally kicking himself for how awkward that was. Was he really that bad at being straight?
He sighed and looked up, immediately catching Connor laughing to himself. That wasn’t exactly the reaction he was hoping for. He walked over to his boyfriend, his hands placed on his hips in an attempted nonchalant manner.
“What was that?” Connor laughed.
“What? With Becky?”
“Oh, so you’re on a first name basis, huh? Score.” He was clearly teasing, but Will could sense a slight undertone of jealousy.
“Yeah, we’re close,” Will lied with a shrug. It was worth a shot.
“Oh, are you?” He asked, looking from Becky back to Will. “So I’m guessing you know all about her girlfriend, then?”
Will’s eyes widened. “Her girlfriend? ”
Connor smirked, clearly enjoying this a little too much. “Yep, they’ve been together for nearly three years now. She told me after she heard about us.” Well, at least that explained why she seemed so confused when Will was ‘flirting’ with her. He almost felt bad. “Let me ask you something. Was that an attempt to make me jealous, sunshine?”
Fuck.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Will lied, again. There was no way he was going to confess to trying to make his boyfriend jealous because of what Dana had said earlier.
“Hm, I think it was. Interesting,” Connor said.
“No, not interesting at all,” Will said through gritted teeth. Connor just smirked at him.
“Okay, we’ll see about that.”
—
“I’ve got Dana’s discharge papers here, Dr. Halstead,” Maggie said, handing the iPad to Will. Before he could grab it though, Connor swooped in and snatched it from her hand. Maggie raised an eyebrow at him and when he spoke to her, his attention was entirely focused on Will.
“I’ll handle those, I promised I would check in with Miss Jones before she was discharged.” Maggie looked between the doctors, eyeing them up like she knew they were up to something, but ultimately dropping it with a shrug and returning to her other duties.
The doctors walked into Dana’s room and the woman’s eyes immediately lit up when she saw Dr. Rhodes.
“Hi, Dana, how are we feeling?” Connor asked.
“Better now that you’re here,” she flirted. She was relentless.
“That’s sweet of you. I just have your discharge papers here for you to sign and then you can head home, how does that sound?”
Her expression changed and she suddenly seemed sad to leave. “Well, disappointed that I won’t be seeing you around, but glad to get home.” She reached for the iPad, grabbing it from Connor’s hands. She signed the documents and handed the iPad back with her usual cocky smile. “Say, you wouldn’t happen to be free for dinner tonight, would you?”
There it was. The entire situation was laughable and Will would be lying if he said he wasn’t honestly a little excited to see this unfold.
“I’m flattered, but unfortunately I’m already with someone,” Connor said, his usual calm demeanour still present.
“Oh, I see.” Dana was clearly disappointed and honestly, Will might have felt bad for her if it were any other circumstance, but right now, he was pretty proud of himself. “Well, if she doesn’t treat you right, you have my number,” she said, nodding towards the form displayed on the iPad in Connor’s hands.
He simply laughed and nodded. “I’m sure that won’t be necessary. He treats me very well.” The use of ‘he’ seemed to hit Dana like a boulder. She whipped her head towards Will. He wiggled his eyebrows at her and his mouth pulled into a tight smirk, although her expression was now completely overcome with annoyance. “It was nice to meet you, Dana, good luck with the wrist.”
As soon as Connor left the room, Dana piped up again. “So, you are with Dr. Rhodes?”
“Yes, I am.” It was a simple response. As much as Will wanted to gloat, he didn’t think it would be the most professional thing to do.
“Well played,” she said and there was something about her tone that suggested she was mildly impressed.
—
“Well, that was interesting,” Will muttered, watching as Dana left the ED.
“Very,” Dr. Charles piped up, half startling Will. “I was called in to assess her to make sure she didn’t harm herself with the intention of meeting Dr. Rhodes. Apparently, she broke her wrist a few days ago and didn’t plan on coming to the hospital at all. Said she would let it heal itself. It wasn’t until she saw the Forty under Forty issue that she decided to come in. Strange case, but she did not pose a risk to herself or others, so I felt no need to hold her.”
Will scoffed. “Yeah, she was just trying to score a date.” Dr. Charles looked at Will, a knowing look on his face.
“I’m sure that was interesting to see.”
“Yep, I didn't really peg myself as the jealous kind.”
“Dr. Halstead, jealousy is a normal, healthy emotion,” Dr. Charles said, speaking to him as if he was one of his patients. “You just have to make sure it doesn’t impact your decisions.” Will nodded.
“Goodnight, Dr. Charles.” He gave him a pat on the back and walked towards the break room to grab his things.
“Night.”
—
Will knew he was in for hell when he walked through the door of Connor’s apartment. They gave each other copies of their house keys a couple months into dating since they were already spending most nights together. They often resided in Connor's apartment as it was bigger and frankly, a lot nicer than Will’s.
Before Will could take his coat off, he was slammed up against the door by his boyfriend. He was pulled into a sudden, passionate kiss, although it merely lasted a second before Connor pulled away, Will chasing his lips.
“That little stunt you pulled at work today,” he recounted, seemingly riled up. “You think you can get away with that?”
“It worked, didn’t it?” Will teased, knowing talking back to Connor was just going to escalate the situation.
“Don’t be a brat. I should punish you for that.”
“Do it,” Will demanded, resulting in Connor slamming their lips together again, the aggravation making the kiss all the more intense. If Will knew one thing, it was that Connor loved when he mouthed off when he was horny. He knew his boyfriend secretly loved when he was a brat, because that meant he could punish him, something they both loved.
Connor dragged Will to their room, barely breaking the kiss along the way and only to discard their clothing. When they reached the bed, Will fell backwards, allowing the man above him to climb on top and straddle him, deepening the kiss again.
“Gonna remind you who you belong to and you’re not going to argue, understand?” Connor mumbled, kissing the skin below his lover’s neck.
“Loud and clear, boss.”
“Don’t be smart, you know why you’re being punished.” Will smirked, holding back a moan when Connor bit down hard on his skin. “Be good and you’ll get what you want, okay, sunshine?”
“Yes, yes, I’ll be good,” Will whimpered. He squeezed his eyes shut as Connor kissed and licked his way down his bare chest, paying close attention to his nipples. Everything about his touch felt amazing and Will couldn’t get enough. “Con, please.”
“What do you want, baby?”
“You,” Will groaned, struggling to speak full sentences when Connor was abusing his nipples with his teeth. “I want you, I’ll be good for you. Please, just touch me.”
Connor released his nipple, licking over it to sooth the bite marks. “Okay, baby.” He reached down and traced his hand over Will’s obvious hard-on that was only covered by the thin material of his boxers. He cupped his hands over him, resulting in a string of soft moans from the latter. “Louder, I want to hear you, sunshine.”
Will didn't hold back. He loved being loud during sex. He loved that Connor could hear exactly what he was doing to him. His moans persisted as his boyfriend reached down, freeing his cock and giving it a couple weak strokes. “Ugh, yes, feels so good.”
“I’m going to suck you, but you have to keep your hips down. If you push yourself further into my mouth, I’m going to stop and you’ll have to get yourself off while I watch, okay?” Connor looked down at Will as he quickly shook his head yes. With confirmation, Connor slowly took Will into his mouth, soaking up the sounds that Will was making as he sank lower and lower until his nose was nestled in his abdomen.
“Fuck, it feels amazing, Con,” Will moaned, forcing himself to keep his hips steady. The urge to fuck himself into Connor’s mouth was strong, but the last thing he wanted right now was to get himself off in front of his boyfriend while he watched. Admittedly, they’d done it before and it was definitely hot, but he wanted nothing more than Connor’s dick in him while he came, so breaking the rules just wasn’t an option.
Each time Connor pulled off Will for air, he would spit words of praise as he watched the man fall apart under his touch. He kept sucking his cock, sliding his tongue up the vein on the side until Will warned him he was close. He pulled off with a pop, swiping his hand across his mouth to get rid of the mix of spit and precum that was glistening on his lips.
“So good for me, baby.” Connor leaned over Will, pulling out a half empty bottle of lube from the bedside table. “I’m going to prep you now, okay?”
“Okay,” Will mumbled. He was almost gone already.
“Are you okay, love? Are you with me?” Connor asked, leaning over and planting a kiss on Will’s forehead. He nodded. “Use your words, baby.”
“I’m good, just feel so good. You’re amazing.” Connor laughed. He loved how soft and loving Will got during sex. Connor always made sure to check on him, to ensure he was okay to continue. Majority of the time he was fine, but on the odd occasion he wasn’t, Connor would simply pull the blanket up and cuddle his boyfriend, stroking his hair and whispering little loving affirmations in his ear until he eventually drifted off to sleep.
“You know what to do if you want to stop?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me, love.” Connor often reserved the term ‘love’ for when they were alone. They didn’t use many pet names when they were around other people, apart from sunshine, although Connor had called him that long before they got together so nobody usually batted an eye when he used it. But this was different. This was just for them and they liked it that way.
“Tap your arm twice,” Will said, earning a nod of approval from Connor who popped the cap of the lube and poured some onto his fingers.
“Spread your legs for me, baby.” Will obliged, moving his legs apart so Connor could prep him. He traced a single digit over his hole before pushing it in slowly. Will visibly tensed, as he normally did. No matter how many times they did this, it always felt strange at the start. Connor stroked his thigh, calming him down enough to slide another finger in when he was ready. “You look so beautiful, doing so good for me.” Will hummed at the praise, breathing heavily as Connor prepped him with three fingers until he was ready. He pulled out and Will whimpered at the sudden feeling of emptiness.
“Need you, Con,” Will spoke, his words still not forming coherent sentences. “Need you inside of me, please.”
“Don’t worry, baby, I’ve got you.” He slicked up his own cock with a generous amount of lube before pressing the head to Will’s entrance. “Just breathe, it’ll feel good in a moment,” he reassured his boyfriend, pushing into him until he bottomed out. He waited a moment before Will told him he could move.
The original thrusts were slow and timed, but after a while they became sloppier and both men were gasping with each movement. It wasn’t until Connor changed the angle and hit Will’s prostate that the man let out a wail that bordered on a scream, letting Connor know that he wouldn’t last much longer at this rate.
“Fuck, yes, right there,” Will moaned. He leaned forward as best he could, grabbing Connor’s neck and pulling him down into a kiss. He darted his tongue out, running it across Connor’s bottom lip and softly nibbling on it to extract more moans. He too loved the sounds his partner made in bed. Once he was satisfied, he moved his attention to his neck, sucking little marks onto the skin. He knew they would probably be visible above Connor’s scrubs at work, but he didn’t care, especially after today.
“I’m close, love,” Connor breathed, letting his eyes fall shut in pleasure.
“Me too, so close, Con.”
“Cum for me, Will.” With those words alone and a little help from Connor as he stroked his leaking cock, he came with a tremor that caused his entire body to shake. Connor wasn’t far behind, cumming only a few seconds later inside his boyfriend.
As the aftershocks of their orgasms washed over them, they fell backwards onto the bed, immediately wrapping each other in their arms.
“You did so good for me, baby,” Connor murmured as his face was pressed into the crook of Will’s neck. He placed a soft kiss there, right beside the mark he left earlier. “I told you, you have nothing to be jealous of. I only want you.”
“I know, I just hate when other people flirt with you. I want to show them you’re mine,” Will replied, his voice sleepy.
“I am yours, you have nothing to prove to them.” Connor smiled into Will’s neck, stroking his hair. “All yours, baby.” Will shifted to face his boyfriend, placing a delicate kiss on his lips before the pair drifted off to sleep in each other’s arms. Everything was falling into place.
