Sometimes it was easy to forget you were in space. Once your body got used to weightlessness, everything else was easy to overlook. Drinking from a tube, sleeping in a bag... these were all things that seemed odd a first, but the brain had a way of rendering all so mundane.

Then Lily would get a glimpse out of a window at the infinite beauty of the cosmos, and just for a little while, the rush of how amazing her life had become came rushing back.

Lily was supposed to be working as part of a team of three on the Orbital Station, the planet's first permanent space habitat. However, one had had a serious personal emergency just before their mission, serious enough their emotional state could have jeopardized the mission, and the other had come down with illness days into the mission, and had had to be evacuated back to Earth's surface. That left Lily as, for a time, the only person in space.

It had been too late by then, obviously, to cancel the mission. The next mission had been fast tracked to replace her, and would arrive in just two weeks. In the mean time, she didn't have much time for much except maintenance and repairs. Her own personal project had had to be cancelled, and though a future mission would carry it out for her, that was little comfort, knowing something Lily had worked on for years would be completed by someone else.

She was sleeping 6 hours, working for 14, with time in between for a few short breaks to do anything that wasn't working or sleeping. It was hectic, but you didn't get into space if you didn't know what you were doing, and besides, she only had to keep it up for two more weeks.

Staring out the window, though, she didn't regret it. It was true what those first astronauts had said. You really did have to go to space to understand. You had to see it for yourself.

Moving through the station, she did her checks on every system. Due to the lack of crew, she was having to manage a lot of systems designed for having at least three people aboard. For once, though, it seemed she might get through a whole day without a major problem to manage.

As she lazily perused blue monitor after blue monitor, she took note of readings, logs, and more to send back down to the planet at the end of that day. Mission control had seemingly decided to take a more hands-off approach, letting her talk to them when she wanted to, but giving her space. Deep down she understood the psychological reasons for doing so. They checked in intermittently, only when they needed to. It suited her fine, but it did irk her to be so independent and yet to ultimately still be so... controlled.

Still, the privacy suited her fine, and it offered a solution to its own problem. It meant that on occasions like this, when she got a few tasks done quickly, she could take a bit more private time to herself. She was the first person to be alone in space for nearly a generation, and her sleeping quarters had a privacy screen. She had quickly found an excellent way to work off her frustration.

Masturbating in space was quite a challenge at first. She was fairly sure she was probably not the first to try it, but nobody had ever bothered to write down a manual on the procedure. As such, she was very much learning as she went along. Given the rather tight constraints, as ground control would likely wonder why something wasn't being done if she was more than five minutes or so late without informing them of a schedule change, she also had to be quite ruthless.

She had quickly discovered the benefits of her sleeping bag, providing something to keep her body from floating around and bumping into things, she would draw the drawstring as tightly as she could around her, tugging it inside, with a hand tactically positioned between her legs, and the other hand able to shift down to her chest once the bag was tightened.

From there, it had just been a matter of working out how best to ride her own fingers. Due to the weightlessness, she could glide her body forth and back with ease, fingers thrumming away inside her recklessly and pinching her clit between them.

Unless they needed to talk to the crew the microphones weren't on, so they wouldn't have heard her. She'd already made the excuse multiple times of taking micro naps, and ground control had seemed to buy it, but again there was no way to be entirely sure. Maybe they'd just made an unwritten rule of not acknowledging it.

She tried not to let it get to her. She was no exhibitionist, but at any given time there would be a maximum of two people even watching their monitors on the surface, let alone looking at the cameras. If someone knew, she didn't really care. She was the one abandoned alone in space with no one to talk to, after all, if she needed to fuck herself a couple of times a day to deal with the stress then that was her business.

With her bio-monitor removed, assuming they didn't know already, they wouldn't see the mini-heart attack developing on their screens. She'd slip it back on when she “woke up”, and go back to work, always seeming much more relaxed.

The system worked great. She always seemed to get her work done more easily while coming down from a titanic orgasm.

Something about being confined in the tight bag, feeling it pressing in on her, was starting to... get to her. Having gone more than seven weeks with no human contact, she was starting to wonder about the psychological reasons behind it. It felt like something was just hugging her. No, controlling her. Totally absorbing her. She was utterly sunken into something... The fantasies in her head were running wild, and often she'd try to forget the more embarrassing or outlandish ones after the high wore off.

It was as she was still buzzing from her latest escapade, staring out that window as she was gliding through one of the testing units, that she noticed something odd. Something brightly shone for a moment, and then was gone.

It wasn't unheard of for debris in space to reflect the sun, so she trained her eyes on the same spot and waited to see if it glinted again. Nothing.

She made a note of it, detailing roughly where she'd seen it, as space associations were tracking space debris as a matter of course, but not every piece had been accounted for. It might have to be tracked down and added, especially if it was this close to the station. It was a rather uncomfortable truth that, deep down, they really had no idea what was floating out there in space. All the satellites and telescopes in the world were only capable of observing about 1% of the night sky. A lovely thought, she thought, when you're inside a pressurized bubble floating in space, heading back to work through one of the research units.

As she entered the habitation area that “evening”, she set a timer for six hours. She didn't need to, no doubt she'd have a message waiting from mission control to wake her, with an agenda for the next day.

“Good night mission control,” she said, as the daily report was completed and uploaded.

“Good night Lily, great work today,” came a slightly-too-forced reassuring voice.

As she closed the sleeping bag around her she closed it just a little tighter than usual when sleeping.

“Lily, we've detected a spike in your heart rate, everything okay?”

“Fine,” she said, grinning a little as she tried to get the sleep she really needed.

Her sleep was somewhat disturbed to say the least. Tightening the bag may have had an unintended Pavlovian impact on her dreams, as she was soon exploring an alien world. A world full of ruined buildings, giant towering ruins of some ancient civilization. There were signs, even with the decay, of some awful disaster having happened here.

Her breath was echoing inside her helmet as she made her way down a street. What had happened here? Who had built these structures... and where had they gone?

Then she came to the end of the road, which abruptly cut off, leading to an endless descent. Below her was a field of... something. It wasn't the planet. The planet wasn't... red. It looked almost organic.

As she stared, she could swear it was moving. Then she noticed that, to either side of her, the red substance had spread up the cliff... had it always been there?

When, with a slight shiver, the red mass slid down the walls around her on either side in a pincer movement, she had her answer.

Lily took off at a run, as fast as the suit and gravity would allow. She clawed at the air, desperate, manic, trying to get away. Now the ruins made sense. Now she knew why they were deserted. They had been running.

She just couldn't run fast enough, her legs felt so heavy, and Lily felt as if she was running in syrup. Looking down, she noticed that was because she was. The substance had swelled past her, swallowing the street ahead.

In pure panic, she tried to rip her feet free, but merely fell forwards. In seconds, she felt the near liquid mass swarm over her. In moments, her frantic struggles became muted, then she felt the substance stiffen over her. Instantly, she was embedded within it, the suit motionless. She shook her limbs within the suit's arms and legs in blind terror as she then felt the suit begin to compress, until all movement was robbed from her except her head. Inside the clear glass helmet, she swivelled her head around as the red substance seemed to swirl and move... until at last, something coalesced in front of her eyes. An air pocket appeared in front of the faceplate, and... then from the mass emerged a face. It smiled, and kissed the glass.

Lily screamed as the red mass slowly seemed to form hands and undid the fasteners which held the suit's helmet closed, and for the briefest second, felt the red mass rush in and smother her and she felt it flood through her suit, touching every inch of her, smothering her whole being, her soul swallowed whole...
