Chapter Text
It’s been three years since I’ve seen my husband.
I remember him, before it all happened. The Bert that really was Bert. He was 36, loving and soft-spoken when he didn’t have a camera in his face for work. I still remember the last time I saw him smile. He left for the grocery on that brisk Friday afternoon. But when he came back, the Bert that I loved, the Bert that I married, was gone.
He saw it happen. If he hadn’t turned to shortcut down that alley off Sesame Street, maybe some part of the love of my life would still be here. But he went down that alley. I don't know what happened. He never told me the details. But I know standing in that alley was Bert's best friend, Big Bird, and the Grouch. And I know that before Bert had a chance to say anything, Oscar shot Big Bird in the heart. Bert watched his best friend die. And he's never been the same.
