Natural

Summary:

Sometimes Kakashi gets lost on the path of life, what happens when his path crosses that of a new colleague- one that is off-limits.

Inspired by the song 'Natural' by Imagine Dragons.

"Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost, tell me
Will the stars align?
Will heaven step in? Will it save us from our sin, will it?
'Cause this house of mine stands strong"

Chapter 1: Prequel

Chapter Text

"Kakashi-Sensei, why do we have to go on this lame D-rank mission?" The knuckleheaded blonde ninja groaned as team 7 made their way into the local town square. Honestly, Kakashi wasn't sure himself, it was a bit odd seeing as it was requested that his team take on this task by the Godaime Hokage herself when usually she never dealt with such low-level tasks. It was all to suspicious to him but he wouldn't dare question Lady Tsunade; her temper was beyond terrifying. No he would keep it to himself for now. Keeping his gaze on the Hokage manor beside the academy as they made their way closer to the destination. He was already a bit on edge, he had been distracted reading Icha Icha Violence that morning and ended up late as usual. Had it just been a mission with the teens, he wouldn't have been bothered but this was a meeting with Tsunade which was much more important, he suspected. "For once, I agree with Naruto. And why do we have to see Tsunade first?" Sakura reiterated as they approached the building. "You'll see." Kakashi assured them, careful not to let on he was unsure of what the purpose of being there was either. In the lobby, the Copy Ninja stepped up to the desk that sat near the door. "Checking in. Team 7 for Lady Tsunade" He said plainly, before the receptionist could direct him, a voice beckoned. "YOU'RE LATE, HATAKE" Tsunade shouted from the stairwell in the middle of the bustling apex. Making her way over to the group, she grabbed Kakashi by the collar. "I assume you have a good reason and if not for your students being around, I would knock you through the floor." She snarled, sake on her breath despite it being the early afternoon. "Follow me!" The Hokage instructed dropping her grip on him.

Leading them up to her office, she motioned for them to enter, closing the door behind them. Taking a seat behind her desk, Tsunade folded her manicured hands in front of her. "I suppose you might be wondering why I called you here: it's not a for a mission." She confessed. Naruto huffed. "You didn't even want to go on this mission, why are you upset?" Sai asked, side eyeing the blonde. "It's better than getting lectured!" He shot back. "Who said I was lecturing you?" The older blonde scolded. "I think what Naruto is asking, Lady Tsunade, is why did you call us here?" Sakura stepped forward, her tone apologetic. "Yes, I wonder as well." Kakashi confirmed. "Well, it may be shocking to you, I'm sure it will be shocking to most of Konoha but we will be having a new Kunoichi in the village. I'd like you to take her under your wing, Perhaps as an aide for your tutelage." She explained. "I'm sorry, do you think that my teaching is not adequate on my own, that I need assistance?" Kakashi raised an eyebrow, somewhat offended at the implication. "Not at all. She will need someone to show her the ropes and I think you and your squad would be the best people to do so, at least until she is settled enough to join the ranks in Konoha. In Kumo she is a Jonin specializing in medic ninjutsu. I think it would be helpful to have someone with more advanced skills in the area of medicine to be with you." She said her eyes narrowing on Naruto. "What are you looking at me for?" He shouted. "Let's see, you have poisoned yourself, gotten yourself hung in a tree, given yourself food poisoning more times than I can count, shall I go on?" Tsunade listed; Naruto shook his head. "Good. Anyhow there is one other thing that...the Kunoichi is my daughter."

"WHAT!?" Everyone blurted out loudly in shock. "You're so old!" Naruto added earning him a smack across the back of his head.
"She's not a baby, she's 30!" Tsunade retorted.
Still everyone was shocked not only at that but that she had been kept a secret so long.
"I was pregnant with her when my fiancé died. I didn't know until I had moved out of Konoha and she was born and raised in Kumo." She explained reluctantly.
"Why didn't she move back with you when you decided to take on the role of Hokage?" Sai asked curiously.
"Hana had an established career in Kumo, she was working closely with the Raikage so stayed behind. It was her choice." Tsunade shrugged.

Kakashi was almost more offended than anything, he had been drinking with Tsunade and Shizune plenty of times, to the point he had to carry the sannin home with her assistant numerous times and not once did he ever get an inkling that she had been harboring such a secret, not had she ever slipped up in front him. Shizune had kept it under wraps as well, not as surprising but still, it would be her niece; as inebriated as they all had been together, both of them kept it quiet. There had to be more to this and now he was in the right position to probe further.

The room sat in stunned silence under the weight of the revelation. Even Kakashi was at a loss for what to say.
"She arrives tomorrow and she will be moving in to the vacant apartment beside yours. I want to keep her in close quarters because I trust she can come to you should she need anything that I can't help with" Her words were less of a suggestion and more of a threat to Kakashi who nodded, affirming to her that he understood the stakes.
"I want you all here tomorrow at 8 in the morning, sharp to help her settle in. Am I making myself clear?" The older woman spoke pointedly to the copy nin.
"Yes Ma'am"
"Good. You're dismissed." She turned her chair so the back was to them and she was facing the large bay window behind her. "You can see yourselves out."

After they exited Naruto shook his head in disbelief. "Wow"

Wow indeed.
