“But you stayed.”
Katsuki leaned against the wall with his arms crossed and gave Shouto a nonchalant shrug like him being here somehow didn’t mean anything. “So?”
“Why?”
He pushed himself up and walked past him like he meant to leave, even though he didn’t actually go anywhere. “Don’t worry about it, alright?”
Shouto frowned. They all agreed that they would take a trip together for the week to Momo’s parents’ summer home, but Shouto was called away on an assignment with his father and Hawks while he was packing his bags. It was convenient in a way, but when he came back after spending the last three days in a different country, he completely and rightfully expected to come home to an empty apartment, an apartment that would remain empty until Katsuki, Izuku, and Eijirou returned from the class’s getaway.
But Katsuki was here, and based on the two coffee mugs on the counter, he’d never left.
“Figured you’d do something stupid like forget your keys or something and lock yourself out.”
“I didn’t forget anything,” Shouto said.
Katsuki looked at him for a moment and nodded. “Yeah, I can see that.”
Shouto reached into his carry-on bag, fishing around through phone chargers and crumpled up missives, but he soon found what he was looking for. He pulled out a small foiled package, shiny and black and covered in writing he couldn’t read, and he handed it to Katsuki.
“I brought this back for you.”
Katsuki turned it over in his hands with a frown as he inspected it, and Shouto waited patiently.
“The fuck is–,” he said before his eyebrows raised in surprise at the seven chillis printed across the bottom.
“Our translator said they’re delicious, but I wasn’t able to try one myself.”
“Too scared?”
“It’s not a good idea to eat anything with a warning label before a mission,” Shouto said seriously, and Katsuki laughed.
“Yeah, you’re probably right.”
“I hope you like them,” he said, and Katsuki nodded.
“Yeah, thanks.”
It was an odd thing to be shown any level of gratitude from him, but it settled a friendly warmth inside Shouto’s stomach that tugged slightly on his lips.
“Thank you for being here when I came home.”
“Don’t make it weird.”
“Don’t worry, I didn’t do that.”
Katsuki’s face twisted, displeased, and Shouto hummed to himself, content.
He didn’t make it weird at all.
