Chapter Text
It started on a Monday, at around midday Carina was at work and felt herself getting warm, she took off her white doctors coat, and opened a window in her office whilst she worked on some research before her consultations, she has no mothers near labor so unless someone is brought into the pit it’s going to be a quiet shift for her. After another half an hour she finds herself starting to sweat, and she can’t seem to cool down, frowning she wonders where this has come from. She continues to have nightmares about waking up and starting early menopause and never being able to carry a child, so she tries to ignore it. Her page goes off after a while letting her know that there’s an emergency in the pit that requires her attention. Walking down to the pit she realises that her seemingly quiet shift has gone out of the window, as there is a large amount of casualties, as there was an accident involving a car crashing through a Lamaze class.
Hours later after performing 2 emergency C sections, 1 natural birth and consulting with other patients helping them to ensure they can keep their bambini in their tummies, she’s fighting off a pretty big headache and was feeling awful overall. Powering on, she continued on the rest of her shift, looking forward to falling face first in bed as soon as she could.
She was hoping to catch a glimpse of Maya bringing in any casualties in the pit but she wasn’t lucky, and had to settle for a quick phone call when she had five minutes. After 3 rings Maya answers slightly breathless
‘Hey, you okay?’ Maya asks, almost like she knew something was wrong
‘Ahh, I’m feeling a little rundown today, just a headache’ Carina says honestly.
‘Aw, I’m sorry baby. Have you been drinking enough water, eating?’ Maya asks attentively.
‘I’ve been drinking, but I’m not feeling hungry right now’
‘How about I have some soup sent over to you from your favourite deli?’
‘That is very sweet of you, but I’ll eat something later my love, I’m fine for now. I’ll call you later? Stay safe and come back to me?’ Carina asks.
‘Okay, I’m gonna check on you later though! I love you, feel better soon and take something for the headache’ Maya demands
‘Certo, buonasera mio amore’
‘Buonosara’ Maya says back making Carina smile, Maya’s drive to learn Italian means that her understanding is so much better than it used to be when they first met, she is looking forward to taking her to Sicily soon.
4 hours have passed and Carina was feeling even worse, as soon as her shift was over she went straight home and crashed in bed after downing what felt like about three liters of water. The next time she woke up, she was sweating a lot, felt hot to the touch but couldn’t stop the chills running through her body, as her brain tried to catch up with itself she can also feel that she isn’t in bed alone and turns to see Maya cosied up next to her.
‘Maya?’ Carina asks confused and in a daze, unsure as to why Maya would be home when her shift isn't over until 8am, but realises that there is light coming through the closed curtains.
‘Buongiorno baby, how are you feeling?’
‘What are you doing here?’
‘What do you mean? I live here?’ Maya says confused and amused.
‘Is it 8am already?’
‘It’s coming up to 10, are you okay? Are you still not feeling well?’ Carina shakes her head and forces her head between Maya’s shoulder and neck in an attempt to draw comfort from her. Maya can feel the heat that Carina is emitting ‘You are burning up and sick, what else is feeling bad?’
‘Headache, my eyes are itchy and it's so cold and hot all at the same time’ Carina grumbles.
‘Okay, well let me go and get some medicine and then from there hopefully you’ll start to feel better. When was the last time you ate something?’ Maya asks as she starts to climb out of bed.
With a moan Carina grabs Maya’s pillow and cuddles around it and mumbles a halfhearted ‘no lo so’ making Maya roll her eyes. She comes back to the room some time later with medicine and a bowl of hot soup.
‘Carina, come on, wake up. I need you to take this and then try and eat some of this soup’ She puts everything down on the bedside and strokes Carina’s hair, hoping to ease her into a sitting up position. Carina looks at her with the most pathetic expression. ‘Sono stanco, non posso mangio, non fame’
‘Lo so, pero, devi mangia, per favore, per mia?’ Carina huffs and sits up, taking the medication off the bedside and hoping they help with the fever that has seemingly come from nowhere. Maya brings the bowl of soup closer to her and watches as her wife struggles to get more than half of it down.
‘Per favore, non più’ Carina pleads, ‘Va bene’ Maya kisses her on the forehead, takes the bowl from her and helps her back down into bed, in a couple of hours you need to have some more medicine, but for now try and sleep’
‘Stay with me?’ Carina asks, Maya smiles softly and settles next to her on the bed. ‘You better not get me sick’ Maya jokes.
‘Non prometto mia amore’

It’s around 6pm that night, Maya has been nothing short of the perfect housewife, she has woken up her wife twice to give her more medicine and to put some more food in her body, Maya followed her wife’s ways and made some plain pasta for Carina to have, hoping some comfort food would help. Maya has been checking her temperature at regular intervals, and as her wife is due more medicine she checks and sees that her fever has steadily climbed to 102, and Maya hopes that the medicine and more sleep will help her wife soon.
‘Carina, wake up, come on baby you need more medicine and you need more water’ Maya says gently, hating to see her suffering. Carina groans loudly, not happy to have been woken up and feeling even worse.
‘My whole body hurts’ she complains and takes the medicine off her wife and drinks all the water that is left in her water bottle. Maya takes it from her and proceeds to fill it up in the kitchen, and returns to see Carina sitting on the edge of the bed looking sorry for herself.
‘I need to pee, but I tried to stand up and felt myself getting dizzy’ she explains.
‘I’m sorry you are feeling so bad my love, here, lean on me and we can walk together’ Maya wraps her arm around her waist and helps her up, feeling the sweat pouring off her ‘You might want to take a shower vita mia?’ But before she can answer Maya can feel more of Carina’s weight as she experiences a dizzy spell and nearly falls. ‘Woooah, okay’ Maya says and she holds her tighter and keeps her upright as it passes ‘Okay, you're okay. Just take it slow until it passes, i gotcha’ Carina takes some deep breaths and whines quietly ‘I know, you're feeling so sick, your fever is at 102 but hopefully those meds will make you feel better soon’ after a couple moments Carina sets off again and Maya helps get her onto the toilet seat and waits whilst Carina is ready, she eyes the shower and looks like at Maya ‘I know I probably stink, but please can I just sleep right now?’
‘Of course, come on’ after the walk back to their bed Maya makes Carina drink some more water and asks if she needs anything else, but before she can even finish her sentence she can see Carina is already asleep. Depending on how she is feeling later, Maya will make sure to call the two of them sick from work whilst whatever this is works its way through Carina's system
