Work Text:
Jongin and Kyungsoo have been together since uni. They’ve known each other since they were in diapers. They had the typical best friends to lovers story. And now that they’ve been living together for 3 years, Kyungsoo thinks everything is perfect, until…
“...Soo, I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore...Ugh! How do I do this????” Jongin’s frustrated voice from their shared bedroom got Kyungsoo frozen on the spot. He got out early from work and wanted to cook dinner to surprise his boyfriend.
But he was the one who got surprised instead. He knows Jongin isn’t aware that he has arrived but what should he do? When he just heard his boyfriend planning to break up with him? He doesn’t know how long he’s been standing there with the groceries but his attention was brought back to reality when he heard the sound of the bedroom door opening. Good thing his back was facing the door so he had time to compose himself before facing Jongin.
“Hi babe! I did not know you’re already here.” Jongin said, trying to mask his surprise.
“Oh. I got out early, I just arrived. I did some grocery shopping so I can cook dinner.”
Kyungsoo mustered all his strength not to cry but tears were already in his eyes threatening to fall. He felt strong arms hugging him from behind and that broke his resolve.
“If he’s not happy with me anymore, then I should let him go.” That’s what Kyungsoo thought.
“Babe, are you crying? Why are you crying?” Jongin’s voice is filled with worry as he hugs his boyfriend and tries to turn Kyungsoo to face him.
“Babe? What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Are you sick? Please answer me. I’m worried.”
But Kyungsoo just continues to cry. Because it hurts. He loves Jongin so much but to know that the latter isn’t happy being with him anymore is killing Kyungsoo.
So he gathers all the courage he has left and tries to get out of Jongin’s hold. “Let’s break up.” He said through his sobs.
Jongin froze upon hearing his words. “What did you say?”
“I said let’s break up.” Kyungsoo repeated. And with that, he pushed Jongin away and ran out of their home.
Jongin can’t move. He’s so shocked with what happened that he did not even manage to run after Kyungsoo. He doesn’t know how long he stayed that way, because he didn’t know what to do or what to feel. He was broken from his reverie when he suddenly heard his phone ring.
“Yeol? Oh. Baek. What?” He hurriedly answered the phone.
“What the actual fuck Kim Jongin!” Baekhyun screamed at him through the phone. “I have a miserable Kyungsoo in our living room crying about you guys breaking up. I don’t know what happened but you better fix this shit or else I am gonna cut you to pieces!”
“I’ll be right there!” Is all Jongin said before he rushed to their friends’ house.
The drive to Chanyeol and Baekhyun’s home is only 20 mins. but it seemed like eternity to Jongin. His mind is hazy and he doesn’t know what to tell his boyfriend (or is he his ex now?).
When he finally pulled up in front of their friends’ house, he immediately went inside and slowly opened the door. He can hear Kyungsoo crying and muttering some words as Baekhyun tries to comfort him.
“...but Baek!” Kyungsoo tries to explain through his muffled cry, “..I heard him! He said he doesn’t want to be my boyfriend anymore...”
Jongin stayed rooted in his spot. And upon hearing those words from his boyfriend, he can’t help but chuckle. Kyungsoo’s head snapped towards the direction of the door and his eyes grew comically wide when he saw Jongin.
“What are you doing here? Baek! Tell him I don’t want to talk to him.” But all he got from his friend was a shrug.
“I’ll leave you guys alone. I need to call Chanyeol.” was all that Baekhyun said despite Kyungsoo’s protests.
Jongin slowly walked over to the sofa where Kyungsoo was sitting. But the latter is still crying and refuses to look at him.
“Babe, look at me...” Jongin’s voice sounds so soft that Kyungsoo’s heart clenched.
“Stop it Jongin! Go away! How dare you laugh at me just because you don’t want to be my boyfriend anymore. Isn’t it enough that I’m hurt? You really have to laugh at me?” He said as he tried to cover his face away from Jongin.
“Babe, you’re so cute. You know.” Jongin is smiling now as he tries to hug the shorter one.
“Don’t cry. Soo, listen. Let me finish.” He tries to reason with the latter.
Then he said, “It’s true, I don’t want to be your boyfriend...”
“Because I want to be your husband...”
Upon hearing those words, Kyungsoo slowly raised his head to look at Jongin who now has a soft smile on his face. He is still trying to understand the words.
“Husband? You? What?” Kyungsoo stuttered.
When suddenly, Jongin got up from the sofa, and bent down on one knee infront of the still surprised and puffy-eyed Kyungsoo.
“This isn’t how I planned to do it, but since you misunderstood me. I guess I’ll just ask you now. Do Kyungsoo, will you marry me?”
“YES! I will marry you.” The smaller nods excitedly as more tears run down his face. Jongin hugged his boyfriend, well, fiancé, and kissed him with a smile on his face.
“Ah! FINALLY! You guys looked like idiots earlier!” Baekhyun exclaimed as he went back to the living room.
“By the way, I already called Yeol, and told him to inform the others to come over. We are gonna celebrate your engagement tonight.” Kyungsoo just smiled at Baekhyun as Jongin slowly slipped the ring on his finger. He almost forgot it’s in his pocket because of his excitement.
“I love you Nini.”
“I love you too Soo. Don’t ever think that I will leave you.”
Kyungsoo nods as the taller intertwines their hands with matching rings. And despite the misunderstanding, Kyungsoo now feels happy and content. Because they’re gonna be husbands.
Finally! BOYFIE NO MORE!
