Summary:

it's been a year since you gave up on being new york's one and only spider-woman, and instead you've been spending your time as an intern at Alchemax.
you get transferred from a front desk internship to being an intern and assistant for a scientist on the collider project, and adjusting to your new uptight coworkers isn't as easy as you thought.

aka the spider that bit you wasn't killed so it bit peter parker, and now you work for a silly guy who can't talk to anyone for the life of him.

Chapter Text

so many stories of spiderman, all within one week. it was almost sickening how many there were.

you sighed as you stopped the pointless scroll on your phone, finally deciding to get ready for the day.

they never had articles like this when you were spider-woman.

you shouldn't say were, you still are spider-woman. but after peter parker was bitten, more people cared about spider-man than they did spider-woman. because of this, you decided maybe it was time to give up spider-woman for a while and focus on your other, science focused talents.

misogyny at it's finest, you thought as you fixed your hair and threw on some nice make-up.

today was the day you got moved from your front office internship, to be an assistant for the collider project. as excited as you were, you couldn't help but worry about who your new boss would be.

you secretly hoped it wouldn't be doctor octavius, seen as her intense nature had always frightened you a bit.

you grabbed your keys and walked out the door, making your way to Alchemax.

the clean-office sent filled your nose as you entered, watching other employees grab their complementary bagel or coffee.

you made your way over to the front office, pushing open its opaque door to be greeted by even more employees skittering around, assumably doing their work.

you walked to your corner, getting lost in thought as you gazed at your empty desk.

"i can't believe your really getting transferred,"

the voice snapped you out of your thoughts and you turned to face it's owner, smiling once you realized who it was.

"i know, it doesn't feel real. i'll miss you bunches, phoebe. but hey, this corner desk is about to be yours,"

phoebe laughed as she tucked one of her big strawberry blonde curls behind her ear.

"i guess that's one way to look at it. but i have a surprise for you, come with me,"

although she told you to follow, she didn't give you much of a choice as she grabbed your hand and dragged you out, a paper bag in her other hand.

you had always been glad to have phoebe's friendship. she had shown kindness to you since the day you joined Alchemax, and it helped that you guys were close in age and had a shared interest for fashion.

phoebe plopped you down in a chair in the Alchemax cafeteria, placing the paper bag on the table and she sat as well.

"i thought we could have a farewell breakfast together," phoebe beamed, as she pulled two muffins from the paper bag.

you giggled

"you're so sweet, but you know we'll still see each other all the time, right?"

phoebe gave a fake exasperated sigh.

"yeah, i know. gosh, y/n, i was just trying to be nice!"

the two of you giggled as you continued catching up, you asking her how she'd decorate her new corner desk.

"i'm thinking fake flowers, or should i suffer and replace new ones every two weeks?"

"i say go with the fake, then when you get bored of the color you can just change them,"

"you're so wise, you know-" phoebe began, before glancing to the side and pausing, a sinister smirk on her face.

"hey how about one last game of mine/yours? so we end with a good memory,"

you chuckled at her immature spirit before agreeing.

mine/yours was a game you and phoebe had made up when you first started at Alchemax, where you essentially just claimed any poor unsuspecting Alchemax employee as yours or phoebe's.

"oh, tall one with braids, he's yours," you whisper to phoebe.

she gasps dramatically.

"i'll take him with pleasure. oh, and him right there, mine!"

she not-so-discreetly points at a ginger whose getting a cup of coffee.

you smile as your eyes drift to the people around phoebe's claim. none of them really stood out, until another scientist walked over to the coffee machine.

he was tall, really tall with a hair cut that looked somewhat new. you couldn't see perfectly from where you were sitting, but you could tell his features were soft.

"that one right there," you said, phoebe looking to where you were gesturing.

"tall guy with the glasses, mine,"

"all yours, sister,"

you laughed, so did phoebe.

"why did we make this game," you managed to get out as you put your head in your hands.

"i don't even know, to pass the time?"

you snorted before you both stood up to throw your trash away and retrieve your stuff from the front office. you said your final farewell to phoebe before making your way to the management office.

you knocked, and a muffled voice on the other side shouted a "come in!"

inside the office sat a man in a suit vest and tie finishing up the end of what seamed to be a very important phone call.

"alright, yeah i'll let him know. yes, he'll be very happy to know about this. okay, take care, bye," the man finished, his new york accent thicker than anyone you had met when living in brooklyn.

"ahh, you must be y/n! the new intern who i'm sure is very excited,"

"yes, super excited to get started," you halfway parroted, smiling back at the man.

"yes yes, i was told to give you these things before you found your new bosses office and lab,"

the man gestured to a table which held a pristine lab coat, a clip on name tag, and a bag.

"i don't know what he wants you to do with that bag yet, he'll probably explain when you get up there. and of course, you won't have your name embroidered on the coat yet,"

you smiled and nodded before feeling a pique of wonder.

"who is he? my new boss," you question.

"right, you kinda gotta know that one," the man said, laughing a bit too hard at his mediocre joke.

"you'll be working with dr. ohnn. johnathon ohnn, ring a bell?"

you looked down, slightly embarrassed.

"i don't know many people besides the ones in the front office,"

the man shrugged.

"ah, that's alright," he looked away, grabbing a sticky note and pen so he could scribble something down.

he ripped the sticky note up and handed it to you.

"this is how you get to his lab, pretty sure that's where he wanted you to meet him. he'll fill you in on everything else,"

you thanked the man and pulled on your new lab coat. as you exited, you stuck in the new name tag that read 'l/n' in a fancy font.

you couldn't help but feel eager for the first time in a long time as you stepped into the elevator, your nerves making it feel as if you would puke up that muffin you just had.

you finally made it to the floor of dr. ohnn's lab after what felt like years, glancing at the sticky note to help direct you.

you bumped into many other scientists on your way there, who didn't bother to respond to your timid "sorry"s.

you finally turned the last corner and walked down the hall, pausing infront of his door.

OHNN was pasted on the door in big letters, and that's when reality sank in.

why were you excited? he was one of the top scientists here for crying out loud! he wouldn't be nice, he'd be just like all the other scientists you bumped into on your way up here.

you took a sharp inhale.

you couldn't think like that. spider-woman always gets up. she can't run away just because her new boss could potentially be an asshole.

you held your hand up to the door and gave three knocks, ready to meet whoever was on the other side of the door.

johnathon ohnn was many things. an amazing scientist, a great colleague, and he could make one hell of a chai. but one thing johnathon was not was prepared.

when he awoke, he glanced at his watch, confused when it read 3:44 am. he glanced at his clock, which read 6:30 and he flew out of his bed.

after rushing to get ready, he jumped in his car as fast as possible. and it wasn't until then he realized his horribly mis-matched socks. one a pattern of stripes and the other polka-dots.

wonderful.

he thought to himself as he sped down the highway to Alchemax.

once he arrived, he had to grab all his items from his backseat, including his old lab coat which had probably seen better days. burn marks and tears littered the cuffs of the sleeves. he was greatful he had an extra in his house, because he'd be needing it soon.

he rushed to clock in before taking the elevator to his office, setting the supplies he needed in there down before heading for his lab.

he thanked a higher power for letting him have his office and lab on the same floor, even if they weren't close whatsoever.

after, he headed down to the cafeteria to grab himself a coffee and hopefully some sort of breakfast.

he waited for the machine silently as the ginger man who was using it finished up.

he brewed his coffee and turned toward the breakfast table as he noticed two unfamiliar girls tossing their garbage. one of them seemed to be laughing at something the other had said as she turned to throw her trash away.

he didn't get a good look at her face, but he thought she was pretty from what he could see.

johnathon decided on toast with peanut butter, and he hurried back to his lab.

he entered his lab and sat his coffee down with a sigh, still holding the toast as if it were a silver plater.

he glanced at his watch which read 8:40.

alright, he had 20 minutes to eat his toast and prepare for his intern. this was-

knock knock knock

the noise startled him, causing a glob of peanut butter to fall on a small bit of his wrecked lab coat.

"shit," he mumbled.

he glanced at his watch again.

"what the-" he mentally face palmed, remembering that his watch was broken as of this morning.

he needed a new watch, a voice in his head told him.

you need to let your intern in, another countered.

you waited for a silent moment after you knocked before hearing some mumbling.

"you can come in!" a sweet male voice called to you.

you pushed open the door to see a familiar man brushing something off of his lab coat.

your heart dropped as you remembered you and phoebes game this morning. this was him, the same man you immaturely called yours. your boss. and the worst part was he looked even better up close.

"hello, excuse my unprofessional appearance, i'm johnathon ohnn. you must be y/n" he looked embarrassed as he held out his giant hand to you.

"yes. dr. ohnn, a pleasure to meet you," you took his hand and shook it, noticing that he looked at you as if he couldn't quite place who you were.

you still felt absolutely mortified, trying to remind yourself he had no idea about what you had said less than an hour ago.

"if you want to set your stuff down, that bag management had for you can stay in here, and i'll take you to my office so you can drop your stuff off,"

you smiled at him as he gestured to a desk near a corner.

home sweet home you couldn't help but think as you dropped the bag on the surface of the desk.

johnathon wandered your appearance as you turned your back to him to place the bag down. your professional outfit that still held bits of style from your own personal wardrobe. he began to forget all about his peanut butter toast as he felt a fluttery feeling in his chest.

"ok, i'm ready. show me to the office," you said, a shiny smile still spread across your face.

"sure thing," he said as he stepped out of the lab with you following. he shut the door before he began making his way down the horrid white hallways.

once he arrived he pulled out his work keychain and unlocked the door, pushing it open.

"woah," you whispered, looking around at all the sticky notes and reminders he had posted.

"yeah, sorry, my schedule is kind of a shit show,"

you turned to face him and he swore he felt like his knees would give out right there.

"you don't need to apologize for that! it's not your fault, i'm here to help with that too,"

"right, sorry,"

"..."

"..."

you laughed, and he joined you softly.

you finally set all your things down and organized them while johnathon attempted to have some order with his reminders. he secretly glanced at you from time to time, admiring how you put things in specific places and how everything you had was color coded.

he could tell he was going to like you, and he didn't know how to feel about that.

"alright, i've got all my stuff in here set up," you say, bringing him back to reality.

"perfect," johnathon said making his way back to the office door, "let's head back then,"
