Work Text:

Warm Winter Nights

The frostbitten wind billowed, snowflakes flying and drifting with the cold howl. Barren trees dotted the snowy landscape, their once lush, green leaves long buried within the cold ground.

Layers and layers of snow blanketed the wooden roof of a lonely cabin that sat in the middle of the snow, the rusted windows rattling against the harsh winds.

The moon gazed down at the frozen world, a few stars accompanying the silver glow as they seem to wink mischievously at a certain pair that hid in the cabin, sheltering from the icy claws of winter.

"Jun…?" Nathan mumbled, his eye lids drooping. He had just woken up from a short nap, his mind still bleary and confused. Jun stood in front of the stove, his eyes focused and a girly pink apron hanging by his shoulders, a red ribbon tied loosely on his waist.

"Hi Nathan." Jun's deep but gentle voice sounded throughout the small cabin, as he turned his head to look at the other man.

Nathan rubbed his eyes, adjusting to the brightness of the lamp, hidden in the corner of the cozy room.

"You're wearing that pink apron again?" Nathan chuckled, as he walked closer to Jun to see what he was doing. Jun just hummed in response, his long bangs falling in front of his eyes.

"The pancakes will be done soon. You wanna wait at the table first?" Jun suggested, the light pink cartoon rabbit on his apron contrasting his intimidating stature. Silly, to see a tall and fit muscular man wearing something so childish.

"Sure. Anyway, pancakes at night… That's kinda odd." Nathan observed. "Mm… maybe. You told me you like pancakes just now. Thought you'd like it." Jun replied, a soft smile on his lips.

A light red hue tinted Nathan's cheeks, his heart stuttering at Jun's thoughtfulness. "Oh… thanks, Jun. You didn't have to."

Jun's eyes grew so soft. "I just like seeing you happy." Butterflies fluttered in Nathan's stomach, warmth flooding his heart. "I'm happy whenever I'm with you." Nathan smiled, the tip of his ears pink.

Clack. Jun placed the porcelain plates on the creaky wooden table, and a strong scent of butter and milk enveloped the room. Nathan drooled over the sight placed in front of him, his face filled with awe. "Woah… looks good. Didn't know you could cook, actually."

"I cook for Eiji once in a while." Jun grinned, before settling himself in the seat opposite of Nathan's.

When Nathan bit into the soft pancakes, his eyes lit up with stars. The taste was immaculate. "Holy shit, Jun! This is actually- (chew) so tasty!" he gushed. "Thank you, I'm glad you like it. Anyways, don't talk with you mouth full!" Jun chuckled, his eyes filled with adoration.

Nathan grinned, the pancakes on his plate gone within a blink of an eye.

The two talked, laughter sounding around the small cabin. A fond smile played on Jun's lips, as he listened to Nathan's alluring voice as he ratted on and on about the most random things imaginable.

Finally, it was midnight: the clock struck twelve and the world fell silent. As the rest of the world snuggled deep into their beds, sleep consuming their consciousness, Nathan and Jun sat on their make-shift of a couch, their bodies intertwined.

Nathan rested his head on Jun's chest, listening to his steady heartbeat, while Jun used his free hand to comb through Nathan's messy hair. A peaceful silence fell upon the two lovers.

{ The stars in the sky seemed so cheerful, gleaming brighter in the inky black sky. }

The two cuddled, embracing each other in the other's warm and comforting presence. The rise and fall of Jun's chest and Nathan's faint humming, the two never wanted to let go of the other. Precious moments like this made all the suffering they had went through, and all the bloodshed in the mist-covered realm, all worth it.

As long as the two were together, all their troubles and worries seem to melt away, as if they were never there. As long as he was here, everything will be alright. Nathan wished this moment could last for all eternity.

Jun's eyes softened, his heart racing as he watch Nathan slowly drift asleep in his arms. He hugged him tighter, and gently kissed his head, muttering a soft, "Goodnight, love." Being with the other was more than enough; better than any Christmas gifts he'd ever received. Jun let himself rest his eyes and fall asleep.

Amidst the cold winter nights, their hearts were warm.
