Work Text:
Assistant Inspector Daniel Law of the HLPD was sitting alone in a hipster café just after two pm on a slow Thursday. He’d stepped out of the office after finishing up the backlog of paperwork that had buried half of his desk and he was officially done for the day. Unless some sort of crazy emergency occurred which in this city, was always a possibility. He had the crossword puzzle from the HL Times out and a latte trying to give his stomach a break after all the coffee and cigarettes it had taken to find this small slice of freedom.
The Bic ballpoint pen wiggled between his anxious fingers that wanted to hold a cigarette yet couldn’t for obvious reasons. Footsteps approached him from behind at the small corner table and he kept the corner of his eye on the likely woman who walked confidently closer to him. She continued past him to the next table over placing a coffee and plate with a scone on it down on the table before pulling out the chair to sit down. Something about her made Daniel pay more attention than less; she was familiar, and he furrowed his brow as the pen began to tap against the page of the paper.
He took a sip of his latte while he went through all the people he’d seen in the past week or so. His gut told him he recognized her from a recent time, not something weeks or years ago. She’d definitely spoken to him, and he ruffled his hair to focus. Café, that’s right she had asked him if the table in the café was taken or if the two spots were open. For her and Starphase! This woman must be his current target – Starphase had quite the reputation, well, the emphasis on had since the reports of his systematic seductions had dropped off the radar a while ago. Perhaps, he was back at it again? The very thought irritated Law. He looked back at the crossword trying not to stare at her, expecting that smug bastard to waltz in smiling at Daniel as he wooed her with his smooth words and handsome looks. However, after ten minutes and four more words in the crossword the second-in-command of Libra had not appeared. Stumped on the puzzle and needing more than his empty latte, the detective got up to buy a muffin and regular coffee. When he returned to the table, she was still there reading a book the scone eaten and the coffee half full.
The café wasn’t crowded but space was tight. A young couple had just entered with their child in a stroller looking around for a spot for them. Daniel made eye contact with the mother, and she gave him a look and he began to feel guilty taking up an entire table for himself. Clearing his throat, he stood up and approached Steven’s fling. “Excuse me miss, a young family is looking for a spot to sit and I’m going to give up my table. May I join you?”
She looked up from her book, glanced quickly at him and then the family and back to the open spot across from her. “Ah sure,” she watched him closely a sign that she was now trying to place him. “You, you’re from the other day one of the” Daniel cut her off before she could complete the sentence. He was not here on any sort of business and when he was off duty, he did not like to attract attention to himself. Instead, he held out his right hand to shake hers, “Daniel. Daniel Law. And you are?”
Her handshake was firm as she introduced herself and gestured for him to sit down. Law made sure to thank her for the courtesy and he took a bite out of his muffin. Tentatively, she spoke carefully, asking if he knew what Steven was. Could it be that she was from out of town? Feeling spicy, Daniel replied how he frequently felt towards the ice-cold bastard “What Steven is? Besides being a smug pretentious ass” he paused to see the look of complete confusion across her face before he continued, “he’s also someone dedicated to the protection of the residents of Hellsalem’s Lot.” She opened her mouth to ask more but paused and he sipped the coffee before adding in a last remark that he was aware that Starphase was a fang hunter.
It was obvious that she was unaware of the default state of Steven Alan Starphase, and had only seen his charming side partially earning the label of a lady killer. Instead of throwing her off course, she reset her line of questions asking how long Daniel had known Steven for. Shrugging he gandered it was just after the Great Collapse and the first time he threatened to arrest the man for strange activities. He sighed at how simple things seemed at the time for the NYPD in transition to the HLPD. Expecting this conversation to revolve around Starphase, Law was pleasantly surprised to discover that she had loads of questions about HL, what happened and all the logistics that went into the current state of the city. The topic of Mr. Icy Smartass faded to the background as Daniel found himself happy to be in a conversation about more normal things.
Suddenly, it was after four and Daniel had no idea where the time had gone. He asked her if she was waiting for Starphase; she shrugged stating that they’d been out and about when he got a call. Steven had told her to find a café or two and he’d text her when he was free from the emergency. Knowing that she was from the outside and currently involved with his “favorite” person ever, Law felt obliged to keep an eye on her. He knew firsthand from the missing person reports that solo tourists unaware of the dangers of the city frequently never returned from their trips here. It was best to stick with her until Steven contacted her.
It was a HL happy hour at a local bar, and you found yourself in the company of Assistant Inspector Daniel Law, who had insisted that you call him Daniel. He was one of the police detectives that you’d met a few days prior with Steven, and it was clear he had an “interesting” relationship to your long-distance friend with benefits. At first glance it looked like the detective was the polar opposite of Steven. He absolutely lacked the calm and collected manner of Steven who was always put together (besides his hair). Law wore well-loved shoes and muted colors, a purple-grey suit and green tie today with a tan trench coat that was on the back of the chair seeing that it was summer.
Yet, the more you talked to this blunt officer of the law, the more similar to Steven he appeared. He worked hard (likely too hard), and despite his less sugary words was able to hold his own in verbal sparring with others. Most interestingly, you noticed how he was a decent looking guy. Not out of your league like Steven, more like in your division instead. The bar had a mix of clientele and Daniel seemed to know many of them on first name basis, able to have brief conversations with all of them. This indicated that he took the time to care and get to know all these different people.
Daniel had ordered a half pitcher of draft beer with the full intent to share it along with the expected platter of appetizers. He excused himself for a smoke break and it gave you time to think how you’d ended up here. It was secretly a relief that he’d offered to hang out with you until Steven messaged you. As much as Steven had told you about dos and don’ts in the city, it was too much to keep track of for someone who didn’t wander through life expecting danger around every corner. Having Daniel with you relived your nerves, not because he was a man but because he was a true local knowing the place inside and out.
When he returned from his cigarette break, his tie was looser along with his shirt collar now unbuttoned a bit. You had to admit, he was cute with his left eye barely peeking out from under the asymmetrical bangs. “Any word from him yet?” Daniel seemed torn about something. Was he feeling weird taking care of you or was he also crushing on you? He’d been polite and gentlemanly as possible besides his default blunt language.
Shaking your head, you double check your phone to see no new messages. Happy Hour ended and the place emptied out a fair bit at seven and you needed real food. Your attempts to pay for your share was shrugged off and Daniel explained he’d take you to his favorite diner. It was somewhat close to his place, worst case scenario, you can’t make it back to Steven’s loft tonight.
“Loft. You’ve been to Steven’s place?” This detail caught your attention. Taking an inhale from his current smoke walking towards the diner, Law explained that he’d previously investigated Steven before their working relationship had reached their current state. With the mentioned threats of arrest, it did make logical sense.
Just like at the bar, Daniel Law was on first name basis with the staff at Tom’s and he ordered breakfast for dinner. Biscuits and gravy with a seasonal fruit bowl. You got the sandwich and salad combo, wanting something lighter after the bar food and wondering if Steven was okay. As if he knew what you were thinking Daniel spoke reassuringly, “Don’t worry, as long as he doesn’t end up in the hospital, he’ll be fine. His friend and boss, Klaus Von Reinherz is a force to be reckoned with. Never have I see such a timidly polite man pack unyielding brutal force against a foe.” It seems Law wants to put you at ease and now you are struggling to visualize the modest gentle giant with brutality.
A strange feeling makes you shiver instinctively, and you shake it off getting back to the club sandwich before you. This time, you are able to grab the check while Daniel is smoking a cigarette while on the phone. He gesticulates with his hand, smoke between his index and middle finger. When he comes back you announce the bill is settled and he blushes in embarrassment noting he could have covered it. With no segway, he states that Starphase is still tied up on a job and he’d asked if it was alright with you to stay at Daniel’s place until Steven could come get you, likely before midnight.
Unsure what to say, a message pings your phone. It is from Steven stating that he apologizes but staying with the Assistant Inspector is the best option. You aren’t against this option; it is that the longer you are with Daniel . . . well the cuter he becomes. It would be bad taste to do anything impulsively.
The sun is setting, and the heat lingers in the pavement radiating heat up towards your face. By this point, Daniel’s plain green tie is loose around his neck, and both his coat and suit jacket are draped over his shoulder with his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up past the elbow. An analogue wristwatch catches the light, another shared trait between Steven and Daniel. A few blocks later, you arrive at a midrise brick apartment building with the metal fire escapes and individual window A/C units. “Come on in.” the detective tilts his head towards the lobby which he enters with a fob before the two of you take the elevator up to his floor. The building has been kept up well for its age, giving it a sort of charm and you find yourself stepping into the modest apartment. The entryway is tiny, with a coat rack, and a few other pairs of shoes kicked off to the side. Compared to Steven’s loft with clean lines and light colors, Daniel’s place is all warm browns, brass highlights and cozy den feelings. He walks into his small kitchen while stating that he would grab some barley tea from the fridge. You cautiously, sit down on the dark brown couch and he returns with two glasses of barley tea. Thankfully, he chooses to plop down in his recliner and turns the TV on.
“Not sure if anything is on with this being ah – um Thursday night. I can’t remember the last time I could watch a regular show.” Daniel sighs as he sips his glass of tea, and you relax a little. Just keep it cool and focus on the generic news program with the weather report. A slight tickle in your nose catches your attention before you sneeze violently, the cup of tea in your hands. Unable to prevent spilling, it is after the sneeze that you realize your entire shirt, arms and face have been splashed with tea leaving yourself shocked and Daniel impressed. Of course, you were wearing a light-colored shirt and you can feel the cold liquid soaking into your bra. This was awkward. Quickly, Daniel got up and told you to change out of your wet clothes while he’d find you a dry shirt. As you unpeeled the wet items, there was a knock on the bathroom door followed, by a hand offering a fresh shirt. You thanked Law through the door and put on the three-quarter length baseball jersey in worn soft cotton, thankfully a royal blue shirt and white sleeves. It takes you a moment to wash off the tea from your face and slowly take a deep breath. This was definitely not what you wanted to have happen at this moment, but hopefully Steven would be here soon.
Confidently, you open the bathroom door and step out into the tiny hallway only to collide right into Daniel exiting his bedroom! All the two of you can do is grab onto the other person to stop either of you from falling onto the floor.
It takes you a few seconds to reorient yourself and remove your hands from Daniel’s back as he lets go of your waist. A bright pink blush is blooming across your face as you look anywhere but at him while the two of you stand there frozen. Coughing, Daniel speaks, “I – um. I need to get by you.” It is then you notice how he’s got a flush to the tips of his ears and he’s halfway making eye contact. Swallowing you nod along, yeah, while your feet remain firmly planted in the narrow hallway looking at his loose tie and open collar.
He also doesn’t move, his hands tapping on the side of his thighs, both of you in a sort of stalemate. Unable to leave but also unable to move forward. Daniel sighs finally as he ruffles his hair at the back of his head, “Who am I kidding . . . I can’t compete against him.” You don’t even need to ask who he is referring to and something inside you snaps. Steven is out of your league, and you wonder how you’d even gotten this far, self-doubt pushing you forward. All you say is likewise and he looks at you for an instant before you are swept up in a passionate kiss. Unlike the tidy curated package that is Steven, Daniel is raw. The scent of cigarettes clings to his hair and clothing along with sweat and the faintest hint of cologne. You wrap your arms around his neck while he pulls you close to his chest, one hand settling on your waist.
Everything is hot as he steps backwards into his bedroom, illuminated by a single beside lamp on a small nightstand. The way he reacts to your touch is electric as though he’s gone a long time since he’d last kissed another human being. Another similarity with Steven you realize. When you bump into the foot of his full-size bed, he gently guides you back as he holds himself over you, removing his tie and tossing it off to the side. Smiling, he licks his lips before he kisses you, pinning your hands off to the sides gently. Daniel is gentle keeping most of his weight off you, even though his thighs are hugging yours and you feel him put slightly more weight on you.
Right as he sneaks a finger under the loose hem of your borrowed shirt, a buzzing noise cuts through the silence. Sheepishly, Daniel rolls off and talks to the intercom even though it can’t hear him, “Alright, I’m coming already.”
You jolt up quickly, dashing into the bathroom to tidy up your messy hair and try to not look like you’d been making out with a man whom Steven trusted/teased.
When you enter the living room Daniel is unlocking his door. It would have been more logical for you to exit and meet Steven in the lobby. Instead, he was on his way up? You watch how Daniel runs his hands though his messy hair before he sighs when two knocks sound on his door. The detective leans forward and opens the door with a shit eating grin, “Well, well, well. How long has it been since you’ve last graced my doorstep?” Steven grunted in reply as he kicked off his own shoes, threw his grey jacket over the back of the recliner, his yellow tie sticking out of the pocket. His dark blue dress shirt was unbuttoned from his collar to the beginning of his chest, and the sleeves were rolled up. It had been a long day; Steven looked both exhausted and wired at the same time.
Finally speaking, Steven smiled, replying to Daniel that it wasn’t that long ago. Crossing his arms across his chest Daniel blocked him from entering any further, spitting out that he was impressed that he was making a call before ten pm.
Whaaaaa? Your brain is trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. Steven has come to Daniel’s apartment alone and late at night? Steven smiles and asks if you are okay. Coughing awkwardly, you reply that Daniel had more than been polite. With his trademark business best, he adds that he’d trust Daniel to watch his mother if necessary.
“Cut the crap Steven Alan Starphase. What the hell happened that you left your date from the outside to navigate the city alone? And this has nothing to do with the fact that she’s a woman. We both know that men from the outside suffer worse fates from their overconfidence.”
The taller man sighs wearily as he rubs the back of his neck, stating he needs a stiff drink before anything else. Law gives way for him to walk forward, replying that he’ll pour the drink while Steven washes up. Wordlessly, you watch from the side as Steven completely stripped of his suave demeanor, slinks into the tiny bathroom to wash away the sweat and stress from his afternoon/evening/night. Apparently, the Assistant Inspector is allowed to give Steven a dressing down when required.
At first, you were afraid that you were about to be caught red handed in regards to Daniel, but it seems that Steven was too distracted to notice. You sigh in relief as you melt into the middle of the couch.
Sighing dramatically from behind you, the detective places a stiff drink down on the coffee table next to you for Steven. He then returns with fresh glasses of barley tea for both of you as he chooses to sit next to you on the couch instead of the recliner. The sink stops running in the bathroom and a groan signals the approach of Steven who melts into the couch next to you, picks up the glass, takes a sip and then thanks Daniel. The tension from earlier is now worse surrounding you as Daniel silently drinks his tea, his feet up on the coffee table, leg almost touching yours. At the same time Steven lays his arm along the backrest of the couch behind you as he leans into your side.
His left hand behind you slowly slides down and sneaks behind your back stopping halfway down your spine. Furrowing his brow, he looks at you with sleepy eyes, “What happened to the shirt you had on earlier?” His fingers probed the absence of a bra underneath.
Blushing, you explain that you spilled tea on yourself, and Daniel was kind enough to loan you a shirt. Steven laughs as he slips a few fingers under the hem to tickle your bare skin with a cocky grin he presses against your back as the two of you turn to face Daniel, rolling his eyes as he sighs dramatically with his arms across his chest. Speaking softly, he states that Assistant Inspector Daniel Law is cuter than he looks. Steven pauses while both of you look back at him perplexed. He wasn’t implying that he thought Daniel was cute – was he? You look at Steven, his fingers ghosting over your waist under the shirt a bold move to do in front of a third party.
“You don’t mean to imply . . .” Daniel leaned closer in towards both of you, his feet coming off the coffee table and tucking them under himself facing you.
The feeling of tension that had started to subside was now oppressively heavy around you when Steven purred his reply to the incomplete statement, “That’s exactly what I’m implying. For fuck’s sake, kiss each other already.”
You weren’t sure who moved first – Daniel or yourself, but it resulted in you kissing him hard as he moaned, and Steven pressed himself into your back. One hand slid under the shirt and up your chest while the other wrapped further around to grab onto Daniel.
Ah, the façade had finally fallen, Steven thought to himself as he pulled himself flush with her body, tugging at the loose shirt Daniel had lent her, eager to remove all the clothing between them. His act if you could call it that, was over. It was only a matter of time that he’d reveal to his long-distance crush that he was not even remotely decent boyfriend material. What better way than to rip of the band-aid of their long-distance honeymoon phase than by crossing the line he’d been walking along ever since he’d shown up on Daniel’s doorstep after his failed dinner party last year.
It wasn’t just professional jabs and snarky sarcastic remarks that tied him to the tenacious police detective; it was the fact the two of them clearly liked each other. However, neither wanted to cross that line and sour their increasingly sweet dynamic. For example, when they met a few days ago at the café, Steven and Daniel played their public roles for the rest of the HLPD detectives but it was all show. The two of them had dropped the pettiest of their professional disagreements and had settled on a different sort of bickering. The sort which would be even better if there was some kissing involved among other things.
Steven starts to tug at her shirt while she leans forward pressing her chest against Daniel’s. This was not going the way he wanted, and he instead whines that they need to move to the bed. Law sighs dramatically and between breaths, tells him to go ahead and pull the blankets back and they’ll be there shortly. At least standing up allows Steven to strip down to his boxers and waits for them to stumble into the room, which they predictably do. Grabbing Daniel from behind, Steven leans back as she takes off his shirt, belt and then pants. The detective adorably whines between sighs of pleasure as she kisses the increasing amount of available skin to her and Steven.
Things become chaotically hazy around the edges as Steven spends half his time exploring Daniel’s body while using what he’d learned about her over the past few days to make both of them moan at his touch. Despite the years of longing for the older man, Steven knows to hold back at the moment. His guest will be gone in two days, and he’ll have all time he needs to figure out what it takes the gruff detective melt in bed. Thus, he lets the two of them focus on each other while he helps them get in better positions to squeeze out the best orgasm possible. He’s just here to assist and he smiles as they collapse on each other a tangle of limbs.
Steven lays down next to them gently running his fingers along the side of their bodies when they turn to him with a sneaky look. “Don’t let it all get to your head smartass.” Daniel whispers this in his ear before he grabs Steven’s cheeks and kisses him hard with ample tongue. Caught off guard, Starphase moans allowing Daniel to go deeper, tugging on his messy hair. Thinking that this was already enough for him to handle, Steven sighs as he wraps his arms around Daniel’s neck who pulls himself flush with Steven’s chest when he then makes the dirtiest moan as he feels himself sliding into bliss. Only then does he realize that she’s slid down onto him and he thrusts up instinctively as she sighs. Distracted Steven returns his focus to her while Daniel runs his hands along Steven’s arms before deftly tying his hands to the headboard. Shocked, Steven tugs at them as they only become tighter.
With a sly grin, Daniel turns to her as he speaks, “Shall we tease him?” She licks her lips as she moves slowly up and down, “Definitely, come behind me Daniel.” Laughing under his breath Daniel gives Steven one last kiss wet and sloppy before he pulls back and sits on Steven’s thighs behind her. He’s now pinned down, arms tied above his head and unable to move his legs with both of them sitting on his thighs.
Steven had been impressed with how much force she’d used when she came with Daniel, her legs twitching clearly spent. But now, with Law behind her, Steven watches as he caresses her chest from behind as she comes to a complete stop, pressed flat with him all the way inside. The deep moan of pleasure from her lips drives the icy man crazy as he twitches in the stillness, feeling the pressure build up with no clear release. Starphase opens and closes his hands while his toes twitch. He quietly groans and watches as Daniel finally shifts positions. He sits up and joins her in straddling Steven pressing himself flush with her back. One hand stays firmly wrapped around her chest while the other runs down the front until it begins to rub her right above where she’s settled on Steven. Together the two of them begin to move and Steven moans loudly in relief as she begins to ride him. Once she finds a steady rhythm, Daniel then matches her, sliding himself along her backside. There is little resistance as everything has become warm and wet, the scent of sex surrounding them. As Steven gets closer and closer, Daniel shifts so that he’s grabbing her hips tightly adding force as she pushes down, she comes screaming while Steven rides it out a few more thrusts before his vision goes blank and he violently presses up into her before going completely limp.
It was incredible and Steven is unable to speak. Only when Daniel sighs stating that his still hard, does he notice the cop moving around to untie him handing him a tissue to help with the condom removal. He kisses Steven slowly before asking him to help him out as their dazed lover pulls herself off Steven and looks at Daniel before he caresses her cheek. “One more time, I promise this will be it.” Her face is bright pink and sweat covers her back. Yet she nods before saying okay.
Daniel could not believe what he was doing. This was all some sort of crazy dream, right? He’d been drugged by something from the Beyond it was the only explanation as he ran his fingers along Steven’s fling. Her back was wet with sweat, and Steven lay next to her his eyes barely open. Gently, he made sure she was laying on her side as he pulled himself up to her before pushing himself between her wet thighs. She moaned lightly as he moved slow, she’d already came first from him and second with Steven. And Daniel needed to make it a third time. Her legs were spent, this would only happen if he did most of the work. So, Daniel took his time before he entered her while Steven held her hips in place kissing the side of her neck and shoulder. It took all of his willpower to hold back, despite how pent up he was, biting on the corner of his lips as he rolled her further back and lifting her leg over his shoulder. A deep moan escaped her lips, and he knew he could begin to move faster. At the same time Steven’s hands split between groping her chest while the other slipped a few fingers into her mouth. She sucked on them with force and her own hands reached out to grab onto Daniel’s hips encouraging him to use more force as he slid in and out teasingly.
Despite all his efforts, Daniel grew frustrated as neither of them were quite able to reach the edge and he told her to roll onto her back. Steven withdrew, his one hand wet with her spit as Daniel pressed her knees forward before, he pushed deeper. The two of them moaned in pleasure but it was hard to hold her legs in the perfect position. Understanding the situation Steven said he’d help as he kneeled down behind her and placed his hands on her knees holding them in the exact position that Daniel had been looking for. Now able to bury himself as far as possible, Law sighed as he held her hips in place and he thrust into her with all he had. A groan of fuck, fell from his lips as she moaned for release, biting on her thumb pinned in place by the two of them.
She screamed as she came for a third and final time and Daniel felt her open more in that moment allowing for him to fuck her through the entire orgasm. Her body clamped down on him before relaxing. Now, he was able to finish off a minute later, shaking down to his core before he rested his face on her chest as he calmed down.
As his heart rate decreased, he kissed her, wet and sloppy, now limp inside her. She was the first to speak, “This was not how I thought things would go down tonight.” Steven nuzzled the side of her neck kissing her on the cheek muttering how amazingly hot she was. Daniel removed himself and the second condom of the night that he’d used wrapping it up in a wad of tissues, sweat running down his back, armpits and into his crack. They all desperately needed a shower after these extreme extracurricular activities. A little after one, the three of them squeezed into Daniel’s full-size bed; Steven, her and then Daniel spooned before they passed out from exhaustion. It had been a long and taxing day all things considered.
Right before Daniel feel asleep, he spoke, “Hey Starphase.” Which was met with a hrm. “Tomorrow night the three of us are sleeping at your place before she heads home.”
Behind him there were two muffled sounds of pppfffttt from the usual suspect Steven, but she was amused as well! At least the agenda was set.
