Chapter Text

In Maya’s elegant office, Carina and Maya sat on opposite sides, tension filling the air. Carina fidgeted with her hands, struggling to find the right words. Finally, she broke the silence, her voice quivering, "Maya, we can't just let our parents control our lives like this. I have a boyfriend, someone I love."

Maya raised an eyebrow, her tone sharp, "Oh, the humble boyfriend who doesn't fit into your parents' grand plans?"

Carina's eyes flared with anger, "He means something to me, Maya. More than you'll ever understand."

Maya leaned back, a haughty smile on her lips, "Well, we all have our burdens, don't we? At least I'm not pretending to be something I'm not."

Carina's fists clenched, her frustration palpable, "You don't get it, Maya. I don't want this any more than you do. But our parents..."

Maya interrupted, a glimmer of vulnerability in her eyes, "You think I'm happy about this arrangement? My parents only care about appearances. They want me to have some 'successful' arm candy. Like you."

Carina's gaze softened slightly, "Maybe... maybe if we try to find some common ground, a way to make this work for both of us, we can at least salvage some part of our lives."

Maya sighed, leaning her head back, "Fine, Carina. But don't expect us to become best friends overnight. I have my life, and you have yours."

Carina nodded in agreement, "Agreed. Let's just make the best of an impossible situation."

Bishop House:

Sitting in the opulent living room, Maya looked at her parents with a mix of frustration and defiance. "I can't believe you're actually trying to make me marry Carina," she exclaimed, her voice tinged with irritation.

Her mother, elegant and composed, leaned forward, "Maya, dear, you know the situation our families are in. This marriage would solidify our alliance and maintain our social standing."
Maya rolled her eyes, "But Carina? She despises me. Did you not notice the way she looks at me? It's like she wishes I'd disappear."

Her father, a stern expression on his face, spoke up, "We're aware of the tensions, Maya. But you two have known each other since childhood. Perhaps you can find a way to bridge the gap."
Maya scoffed, crossing her arms, "Bridge the gap? Dad, she hates me with a deep passion. I can't see how that's going to change."

Her mother's tone softened, "Maya, we understand your concerns. That's why we're willing to offer a compromise. If within one year of marriage, neither of you falls in love, we'll grant you a divorce. However, if Carina gets pregnant during that time and you still decide to divorce, you'll have to share custody 50/50."
Maya's eyes widened, her surprise evident, "Pregnant? Seriously, Mom? Carina is not going to get pregnant within a year. That's highly unlikely."

Her father nodded, his tone calm, "Exactly,
Maya. We believe this compromise provides both of you with a safety net. If you truly can't find common ground, you'll have an out. But if circumstances change, well, you'll need to think more carefully."

Maya leaned back, considering their words. "I just can't imagine Carina getting pregnant so quickly. It's a long shot."

Her mother leaned in, a small smile on her lips,
"Maya, sometimes life surprises us. And who knows? A child can change things in unexpected ways. This arrangement gives you a year to try, but also a way out if it's truly unbearable."

Maya sighed, the weight of the decision heavy on her shoulders. "Fine, I'll give it a shot. But don't expect me to believe in miracles."

Her father patted her hand reassuringly, "That's all we ask, Maya. Just give it a chance."

As Maya contemplated the compromise, she couldn't shake off her doubts about the feasibility of Carina getting pregnant so soon.

DeLuca House:

Seated in the luxurious study, Carina took a deep breath before speaking her mind. "Mom, Dad, I can't believe you're actually expecting me to marry Maya. She's an arrogant, immature person who lives in her own world."

Her father, a stern yet concerned expression on his face, replied, "Carina, we understand this is not an ideal situation. But you know how important this union is for our family's future."
Carina shook her head, frustration evident in her voice, "But Maya? Seriously? She's everything I can't stand."

Her mother, her voice soothing, chimed in, "Carina, dear, we've thought about this carefully. Maya and you have known each other since childhood. Perhaps underneath the differences, there's potential for understanding."
Carina sighed, her gaze determined, "I have a boyfriend, someone I love. Why can't I be with him?"

Her father's tone softened, "Carina, we're not blind to your feelings. That's why we're willing to propose a compromise. If within one year of marriage, neither you nor Maya falls in love, you'll be allowed to get a divorce. However, if you get pregnant during that time and still choose to part ways, custody of the child will be shared 50/50."

Carina burst into laughter, unable to contain her amusement, "Pregnant by Maya? Trust me, that's not going to happen."

Her mother leaned forward, a gentle smile on her lips, "Carina, life can surprise us in unexpected ways. This compromise offers you both a chance to try, but also a way out if it proves unworkable."

Carina crossed her arms, a skeptical expression on her face, "I appreciate your concern, but let's be real. I'm not going to have a child with Maya. That's highly unlikely."

Her father's eyes twinkled, "You never know, Carina. Sometimes the most unlikely circumstances can lead to surprising outcomes. Just keep an open mind."

In a rather unexpected turn of events, Carina and Maya found themselves reluctantly agreeing to their parents' insistence on going on a few dates before the engagement. As they met at a posh restaurant for their first outing, awkwardness hung in the air.

Carina fidgeted with her napkin, finally breaking the silence, "So, Maya, what's the point of all this? We both know this arrangement is a farce."

Maya leaned back in her chair, her tone detached, "The point is to at least try, Carina. Our parents want us to give this a shot before making any decisions."

Carina raised an eyebrow, "You think a few dates will magically make us fall in love?"

Maya shrugged, "Maybe not, but it might help us find some common ground. And besides, it's not like we have much of a choice."

Carina sighed, "Fine, let's get this over with."

As the dates progressed, an unexpected camaraderie began to form between Carina and Maya. They shared stories, exchanged glances that weren't filled with animosity, and even managed a few genuine laughs. It was during one of these outings that Maya leaned in, her voice low, "Carina, I want you to know something. After the marriage, you can keep your boyfriend. I won't meddle in your personal life as long as it doesn't interfere with our agreement."

Carina looked surprised, "You're okay with that?"

Maya nodded, "Yes, I have no right to dictate your choices. But in return, I ask that you keep a secret of mine."

Carina arched an eyebrow, intrigued, "A secret?"

Maya hesitated for a moment before continuing, "I'm in love with someone, Carina. It won't interfere with our agreement, I assure you. But I need your assurance that this secret will stay between us."

Carina's curiosity piqued, "You're in love? Why haven't you mentioned this before?"

Maya's gaze was intense, "Because it's complicated, and it's something that I've kept hidden. I need you to understand that this won't affect our situation. Can I trust you to keep this secret?"

Carina nodded slowly, "I'll keep your secret, Maya. As long as it doesn't disrupt our agreement."

Maya offered a small smile, "Thank you, Carina. This means more than you know."

As the days turned into weeks, Carina and Maya's dynamic shifted once again. A sort of unspoken understanding developed between them.
