A Minute (Not So) Alone

Summary:

Tommy blinked his eyes open, lifting his head from the comfortable resting placed it’d been in, blearily trying to remember where he is when his eyes catch the dashboard display ahead of him.

2:36am

Just past it, Tommy could see the dark road spread out before him.

Notes:

Roadtrip AU! I'll be honest, I have had this written for almost a month, and just never got around to actually posting it.

Anyways, this fic is inspired by a fic I read years ago and can't for the life of me remember from where exactly - I think it was an old Achievement Hunter Fic, but it's been a few years since I've seen it, so who knows - but the prompt for that was "write a scene in which a minute passes" and I adore that idea.

But here, I'll let you get on with it. It's nothing grand, just some soft fluff. There's not even the usual hidden angst.

Work Text:

Tommy blinked his eyes open, lifting his head from the comfortable resting placed it’d been in, blearily trying to remember where he is when his eyes catch the dashboard display ahead of him.

2:36am

Just past it, Tommy could see the dark road spread out before him.

Oh. That’s right. They were on the move. A road trip Phil had called it, though Tommy knew that it was more to lay low after a major heist he’d pull off.

Not that Tommy was complaining. It had been a while since his whole family had been together without something larger than them going on.

Speaking of Phil, Tommy could see him fast asleep in the passenger seat, body completely lax as he lets out a quiet whistle on his exhales. They hadn’t been gone all that long, had left a little over a day ago, but Tommy could already see the way the bags under his eyes have seemingly shrunk and the every present tension has melted away. He let his eyes linger for a moment before his eyes move over to the drivers seat, where Kristen sits, dutifully keeping the car going steady.

Tommy took in the messy bun she’d thrown her hair in, and could make out some wrinkles on her shirt. She seemed alert and attentive, but he could see the way the nearing 3am pulled at her eyes, the way the quiet sleepy feeling in the car relaxed her shoulders. His mom was usually so well put together, sharp smiles and sharper eyeliner, not a single hair out of place. It made him happy to see her so relaxed.

His eyes slid away from her, catching on a speed sign as it passed by the window and following it until his view is out the window is blocked by Wilbur, who’s laying against the window with a jacket - Techno’s, he realizes distantly - under his head for comfort. He is relatively still, but Tommy watching his finger tapping away, as if composing songs even in his sleep. His body shifts slightly, and Tommy realizes their legs are tangled together, something he takes comfort in.

Tired, he rests his head back down, eyes drawn the to movement of a hand beside him as he realizes it’s Techno he’s resting against, his hand moving to rub softly at hair. Tommy’s eyes slid up to meet his older brothers open ones. It doesn’t surprise him, not much anyways. Techno has insomnia and it’s probably best someone stays up to keep the driver company, But even still Tommy can see that the quiet, sleepy energy has gotten to him too, in the way his blinks are long, and his movements slow. In the way his lips quirk up when their eyes meet.

“You good, Theseus?” He asks quietly. The low timber of his voice is soothing, and Tommy can’t help but relax against him, head pillowed once more on his shoulder. He lets out a content, affirmative hum. His eyes slide back to the front, catching Kristen in the rear view mirror, who gives him a smile, before his eyes go back to the dashboard.

2:37am

“Yeah,” his voice is soft as he lets his eyes slip shut, safely tucked between his brothers, listening to the quiet sound of the car engine, feeling more comfortable and relaxed than he has in a long time, “Everything’s great.”

And with that, Tommy let oblivion take him once more.
