Chapter 1: The Mystery of the Wailing Woman

Chapter Text

It was midnight when the first wail echoed throughout the dormitory.

Fushiguro Megumi immediately sat up in bed and whipped off his eye mask before sprinting toward the front door of his apartments. By the time he was in the hallway, Itadori Yuuji had also opened his door and was hastily putting on a loose t-shirt.

“Do you think it’s a curse?” Yuuji croaked, falling in behind Megumi.

He didn't answer, ears ready to locate the potential threat.

In silence they listened for the sound. Their breaths slow and sparse as they waited.

The wail came again, this time accompanied by a low groan.

“There,” Megumi whispered sharply before moving toward his left.

Their steps were careful on the wooden flooring as the next wail came. But this time they both stopped abruptly.

A pale yellow light luminated the darkness as they both stared at the door to Gojo-sensei’s apartments.

Megumi felt Yuuji tug his sleeve. “You don’t think-”

“Ahhhh,” the wail came again through the door. “Gojoooo, ah.”

Two wide eyes meet in the darkness before they were both sprinting back into their separate apartments.

Megumi buried himself in his sheets, immediately stuffing his ears with his sheets. At fifteen years old, he didn’t think Gojo could traumatize him anymore but he was wrong.

Morning came as a relief to the residents of the dormitory. With the rising of the sun, the wailing woman’s cries had died down leaving behind the happy chirping of morning birds.

Megumi rolled out of his bed with shadows imprinted on the underside of his eyes. Staring at his mirror for ten minutes, he had to admit that he finally looked like his hero Okkotsu Yuta.

Exiting his apartments with a soft sigh, he almost missed the two crouched figures in the hall.

Wrinkling his brows and pursing his lips, he approached, “What are you two doing?”

Kugasaki Nobara snickered to herself, “Itadori told me what happened last night. We have to find out the identity of that shameless woman.”

Yuuji turned, dark circles also a prominent feature for him that morning. “I tried to stop her.”

Megumi nodded.

Nothing could stop Nobara when she got an idea in her head.

He leaned against the wall. They would be there for a while.

An hour turned into two as they all lingered in the hall.

Megumi looked up just in time to see the impatience on Nobara’s face. He stiffened. She was about to do something impulsive and very, very stupid.

Before he could even utter her name, her small feet carried her forward. She was already knocking loudly on Gojo's door as Megumi pushed past a slumbering Yuuji.

“Gojo-sensei! I have a question about the homework! WHAT-”

The door swung open.

Half-dressed, Gojo was rubbing his eyes before leaning against the door frame. He surveyed the three of them slowly before blue eyes settled back on Nobara.

“Yes, Kugasaki?”

No answer came as all three students struggled to hide their shock. In plain sight behind their teacher was a wrinkled miko outfit strung across the apartment floor.

Following their eyeline, Gojo shrugged. “Iori-sensei needs to rest. If it’s nothing important, send me a text.”

With a click, he shut the door leaving his students in silence.

The mystery of the wailing woman had been solved.
