Work Text:
Rockbridge High's fundraiser festival had most of the school's student body occupying the football field. Now a makeshift marketplace, you stroll down the countless rows of stalls littered with either food or school merchandise. Your friend Dina accompanied you in hopes of getting your mind off of your current relationship problems that have been plaguing your mind for weeks.
Trailing absentmindedly behind Dina -who for the last hour has been dragging you around from stall to stall- she suddenly comes to a halt, causing you to look up from your feet in confusion.
In front of the both of you stood two girls who you have seen around school but have never spoken more than a couple words to.
The first one who starts speaking has long dirty blonde hair braided down her back, behind her a girl with short auburn hair stands. She wore a baggy pair of jeans, paired with an equally oversized graphic tee. Her eyes met your gaze for a moment before she quickly looked away, scratching the back of her neck as she did.
You look away as well, uninterested in the conversation developing in front of you and deciding to let Dina handle whatever it may be the girl wants. Looking around your surroundings, you swing your foot slightly, moving your gaze down to stare at your feet in a bored daze.
Your trail of thought is interrupted by the sound of your name, causing you to look up from what was precisely occupying your attention. Looking at the two girls in confusion, the blond one continues speaking.
“Ellie was just saying something similar to me.” She adds, glancing back at the freckled girl whose eyes are widened, your gaze following. Ellie scratches the back of her nape again, shaking her head in denial before muttering a small “I don't think so” to her friend's comment.
Looking back and forward between the both of them, the blonde one continues talking. “I think so! It was really good. Super funny.” she adds, pressuring Ellie to join the questionable conversation.
You look back at her once again, waiting in anticipation to hear what she has to say, the confusion from not following the conversion from the start currently making you even more curious about her next words. As she speaks up, her first few words come out as incoherent stutters before she clears her throat, her gaze darting around to avoid your gaze,
“You're just, you’re skinny too,” she says, her tone awkward. You nod your head slightly at what you think is a compliment, sending her an awkward tight-lipped smile back in perplexion at her words.
“I’m Ellie, by the way. Good evening,” she adds, a fake British accent replacing her own as she tips what you can only assume is the silhouette of an invisible hat on her head before she continues.
“Yeah…you’re a real skinny Minnie, aren’t ‘cha,” she says, letting out a small stiff chuckle as she finally meets your gaze for the first time. “You probably should eat! Uh-Oh! call the doctor, skinny girl I see.” Her tone is stiff and her gaze now feels slightly off-putting, causing you to slowly nod at her from being weirded out by her words.
The atmosphere around you grows awkward, with no words being exchanged between the four of you for what seems like years before the blond girl breaks the silence.
“Ok, do you want our-” she questions, pointing to the roll of tickets in her hand before getting cut off by Dina who quickly snatches the tickets from her hands and walks away, grabbing your hand to lead me away as she does. You trail behind her, still very confused at the whole ordeal, before looking back to take a glance at the girls from before.
Standing there where you had left them, evident distress is shown on Ellie’s features, her hands massaging her temple as her eyes are shut closed, eyebrows furrowed.
You can't help but let out a small laugh, somehow being both weirded out but oddly charmed by her antics. You exchange glances with Dina from the corner of your eye before the both of you burst out in a fit of laughter once the situation finally settled.
“That was…interesting,” you mutter between laughs, a wide smile finally on your face for the first time in weeks. The newfound smile quickly fades away as you spot your boyfriend, Jesse, in the distance near yet another girl.
