Chapter 1: Beginnings

Chapter Text

The kingdom of Las Nevadas was not a forgiving place. The townspeople feared what had become of the rulers of their nation. The greed of their lord had left no expectation of what was the future of the town they loved, but still; the spark remained when a child was born.

It was not known of how he looked, but rather the choices he made. All of the help that they gathered over the years was because of him, and they respected him greatly. When he was of age, he remained altruistic; giving all that he could to others. His parents didn’t approve of this madness, and so they could no longer let him take care of anything to take the hope of the people and smash it to smithereens.

That day became known to all of the town, the day the boy was silenced. Bitterness entered the souls of those who prayed for better days, but still, that spark of hope remained.

One day, the rulers decided to present the boy to the people. That fateful day was today.

“And that’s important because?” a man said.

“Wilbur! You have to understand the importance of this day! It’s not just everyday that we get to see the person who gave us hope for a better tomorrow. Even you, who was outside the borders doing god knows what for this many years.” the baker said. She had pink hair and owned the place by herself.

“Sounds fishy, why would they just show the boy to the world if they didn’t want him to make any choices? Besides, I’ve got things to do remember?” the man said. He had been training hard to get where he was now. Sure, he always heard of the soldiers who fought for the kingdom, but it’s not everyday that an opportunity like this opens. He could get the attention of the one who was in charge of the army and get a job while he was at it.

The girl looked at him incredulously, “You? In the army? You might as well have yourself beheaded, that’s not like you at all to suddenly get all excited about something, and even weirder that it has something to do with the kingdom.”

They both met when they were kids. Sometimes Wilbur’s parents crossed the border and took him to see everything, when they got to the bakery, Niki was there. Everytime he crossed the border he met with her, and when he stopped, they exchanged letters. He guessed it had something to do with the kingdom with how strick they were with those who crossed the border.

He had a mission, and he was determined to at least try to accomplish it by the end of the day. “Don’t worry Niki, I’ll be fine. I have to get ready for today, so see you around.” He walked to the exit and dove into the town.

Las Nevadas had some light to it, sure if you looked really closely, cause all you could see was grey. In the shadows, in the mood, in the air. Even some soldiers patrolling the place were stoic and frowned upon. Wilbur walked straight to the center of the town, it was where the presenting would be held, and scanned the terrain. Some decorations were placed and some excitement was present in the townspeople. It would be any moment.

To get started he might as well search for a place to stay while he got assorted with everything. He went to the forest, almost near the palace, but still far so that he would not be seen. He saw almost a shack of sorts, maybe someone lived in it? Although it look as if it was abandoned. He took a closer look and examined it. It would use some work but it would do for now, as he had no job to get a better place. He put his things in the kitchen and went outside when he heard a noise.

Multiple noises, it was like people were near him. Horses? But nobody seemed to get horses unless you were of higher ranks. He hid in the shack while he looked at where the noise came from.

Sure enough, the kings were in horses while a parade of soldiers were stationed around them. Behind them was a boy in a horse, who looked young, but there was nobody protecting him, as if he was a shadow.

Without being seen, he got closer to the rulers, but he had a bad feeling about all of this. Were they not sent in a carriage? Or was it a scheme to get to know more people? Either way he kept a closer look to the boy. He had long black hair, an asortment of moles danced around his face and his suit looked pristine.

Suddenly Wilbur noticed someone behind them approaching, almost as if he was expected. But how could anyone not hear him? When he got near the shack, he grabbed his bow and put an arrow in it, aiming at the boy. He had to act quick.

When the arrow was released, Wilbur jumped and caught it at the last second. At the noise behind them, the rulers got closer to them and noticed what happened.

“What is the meaning of this madness?” The king said, his demeanor spitting fear at those arround him. Wilbur answered him.

“He had a bow and arrow your majesty, I just noticed him and grabbed it at the last second to protect the boy on the horse.” At this, the boy turned to him with a scared look.

The king turned to the person who shot, “Assesination attempt? Guards, take him to the dungeons. You” He turned to Wilbur, “what business do you have here, so close to the castle?”.

Wilbur began to sweat, “I’m sorry for that, I was just looking around for a place to stay while I got assorted with taking my application to the army, your majesty. I’m not from around here so I have nothing to my name.”

“Interesting” the queen said. The rulers looked at each other in a silent manner, almost as if they could communicate with their eyes. He looked at the guards around them and then to the boy, alone and frightened.

The king then turned to him, his expression serious. “Well done, I’ll see what I can do with your application, but it would greatly honor me if you could serve my son as his personal knight. It seems like I lack in giving proper security to my own blood and he can attest to that.”

Wilbur could not believe what just happened. In a matter of seconds he saved the prince and got himself an even better job than the army. He had to do a double take to remember that it was real and he hadn’t just imagined it.

“Of course, your majesty. It will be a pleasure to serve you.” He bowed to the king.

“I’ll see that you get settled in the castle, but first, I have to announce to the people that the celebration has to be postponed. My son can’t go out looking like he saw a ghost, please follow the guards to the castle where you will be trained with the basics and the severity of the situation you are in. I expect nothing but greatness from someone that so selflessly protected the crown prince.” The king said with a cunning smile.

When they started to head to the town, the boy, some guards and Wilbur headed to the castle. He was almost shaking. All because some ignorant idiot decided to test his luck with the rulers of the nation. In some way he had to thank him, he made the job easier for him.

When they got to the castle, Wilbur was directed to the army quarters to get aquanted with his duties till he could serve the boy. It was now that he realised that he didn’t know either the names of the rulers or the name of the boy. But that was a story for another day.

Firstly when he got to the quarters, he asked for the person who was directed to help him with his job. Some guards were confused by this but told him that the general in command was stationed in the training area.

Wilbur entered the training area and was met with maybe thousands of men, suddenly met with the thought that he didn’t even ask for the generals name either. He had to remember on getting the names of the people he was supposed to work for.

There was one person who stood out of the hundreds of guards. He had pink hair with a braid done and his posture demanded command. His movements were fluid and meticulously thought, it was not long until the person he was fighting with was thrown to the ground, with no hope but to surrender. When he got up, the person spoke.

“You all have to learn tactics to keep the enemy guessing and vulnerable. You will not last long in battle if you trained as well as this soldier.” Suddenly, he turned to look at him, as if he had sensed that a new person had entered.

The man got close to him and told him, “What business do you have here?”. Wilbur suddenly blanked but remained calm.

“I was told by the king that I will serve as the crown prince’s personal knight, he had an assesination attempt this morning and I stopped the arrow from getting to him.” He responded.

The man put on a frown and looked at him, as if he was being put on a test just by how he looks. “Are you sure that you can do this? You seem like someone that would much prefer to be stationed as a councilor rather than a soldier.”

Wilbur was always underestimated by his peers, even the people who trained him always doubted wether he was capable of being a fighter, even less a soldier for the kingdom. He was not about to add this general to the mix.

”I can assure you that I will be of great help for the crown prince, even if you doubt it. I suppose you are the general in command?” Wilbur questioned.

“That would be me yes, my name is Technoblade, and I serve to the crown of Las Nevadas. Any threat to the kingdom is a threat to me and I will not hesitate to crush you into pieces if you mean any trouble to the crown prince. You understand?” Wilbur nodded. “Then follow me, I will assist you with what you ask for, but first I have to test your skills for the job you are entitled for.”

There was no doubt that Technoblade didn’t believe a word that he said to him, but he could endulge him. He was prepared to show what he was made for, and in no time he got ready to fight with the general.

“The rules are simple, the first to touch the ground loses. You can grab a weapon from the armory behind you and get ready.” Technoblade told him. He grabbed a sword and prepared for what was to come.

When he was ready, he gave a signal for him and they started. The both of them didn’t move for a fracture of a moment, almost as if they could sense that if they made the first move, anything could go wrong.

Then Wilbur got the upper hand and gave a few blows to the target, but Technoblade blocked them with ease. They stayed dancing around each other with what could be almost a minute or a day, nobody was counting. Other solders stopped what they were doing and looked at Wilbur almost in awe of what he was capable of.

After a while, Technoblade gave a blow to his side that made Wilbur tumble, but he already got accostumed to his style so he made a spin and got behind him to attack. There, he cornered him and gave a few blows until he turned around and continued his fight. But the fight was cut short as one of the guards interrupted them.

”Sorry to interrupt, but the king requires of the presence of the general and the new knight in the counsil office.” The guard said. Then Technoblade turned to him. “I suppose we should not let the king wait, come with me, as I assume you must not know the ways of the castle. It crossed my mind that I didn’t ask for your name.”

“It’s Wilbur” he responded. Together, they entered the castle and went straight to the place they were asked to go to. The castle being big was an understatement, it was huge. Gold accents were decorated in any hall and the colors of the kingdom were present throughout them.

When they got to the office some guards were stationed outside, and when they saw them both, they opened the doors for them and let them in. There, they got face to face with a number of people and the king either scribbling some stuff or talking amongst themselves. When they saw them enter, they got quiet and turned to the king.

”Your majesty, you requested our presence here in the counsil office.” He bowed and turned to him. Then as if remembering himself, Wilbur also bowed to the king.

”I see you both got acquainted, it saddens me that presenting Quackity to the kingdom was cut short by an insolent peasant following us around. Although I see that some good was done as he saved my son from him. How are the preparations of his training going along?” He turned to Technoblade.

”They are certainly going well. We were training the moment we were called so I presume we must continue it when we get back to the area, but I can assure you that he will be of service in no time if I am in charge of everything.” He responded, calm was evident in his face and no trace of doubt of his whereabouts were found.

”Perfect, I expect nothing less from you Technoblade, you have been of great help all of these years of your service. I suppose I am to let you to your own devices to not waste any more of your time. Although I didn’t ask for the name of the person who saved my son’s life.” The king looked at Wilbur.

He had to get used to presenting himself if he was being put headfirst into the lion’s den. “It’s Wilbur your majesty. I hope I can be of service to your name.”
