Work Text:

Lukas padded down the corridor, a cardigan wrapped around himself to ward off the April chill. Even from the master bedroom, he could smell the appetising scent of eggs and bacon frying in the kitchen, the sound of sizzling welcoming him into the cosy kitchen-dining-room of their home. As every morning, Mathias was at the hob, brows furrowed in concentration until he heard the door, head snapping towards him to beckon him with a bright, sharp-toothed grin that Lukas had been secretly unable to resist all their lives.

"Morning, sleepyhead," he teased, and Lukas rolled his eyes, a tired smile sneaking up at the corners of his mouth. Mathias simply laughed, leaving the pan unattended for a few seconds. As easily as breathing, Lukas fell into his hands as they pulled his hips forward, meeting in the middle. As the wind howled outside, rattling the window panes, Lukas simply melted, letting his husband sway him in place for a few moments, content as he can be while groggy from waking up.

Planting a kiss on the Dane's cheek, he fought to stay firm as the other looked at him with a dopey smile. In the end, he patted the cheek a couple times, pulling away and into one of the dining chairs.

"Make me coffee?"

"Maker's already on," the Dane assured him, scraping at the scrambled eggs in the pan. Lukas' stomach rumbled despite his best attempts, and with how the food was being cooked just the way Mathias knew Lukas liked it, Lukas was struggling not to salivate at the thought of it. He swallowed, watching as Mathias plated the bacon and eggs then proceeded to pour the coffee, absolutely enamoured with the man.

"Thank you," Lukas said appreciatively as Mathias placed a plate and the mug in front of him, soon settling on the opposite side of the table with his own breakfast. Outside, some people were walking around with umbrellas, raindrops bouncing off their curved surfaces like rattle drums. "You didn't have to wait for me to wake up."

"I only just started cooking, you have good timing is all."

Lukas doubted it. On the wall, the ticking clock showed ten, a late hour for the early bird of a husband of his.

"Still, eat without me if you need to."

"Yes, mum," Mathias droned playfully, earning a swat on the back of his hand. Mathias caught it, stopping the action halfway. Their fingers entwined, and that was the end of it, Lukas accepting that he would have to somehow battle the eggs with only a fork because he wasn't going to be the first to let go. Mathias seemed to be of the same opinion, and they struggled with their breakfasts, chatting about work, and the rising prices of groceries, and how, if the weather cleared by the weekend, they ought to make a day out of it.

"Do you want kids?" Mathias asked suddenly. Lukas, caught halfway through a much needed, long sip of coffee, almost dropped the cup. Lurching forward, Mathias placed a hand under the cup, making sure it was steady before letting go. Wide eyed, Lukas stared at him, feeling his chest coil, unable to untangle or name what feeling it was, aside from the fact it was how he had felt at the ripe age of thirteen when he had been dared to kiss his best friend. Somewhere, he was sure he had read that humans reacted to love and fear in much similar ways, but he had not put much thought into it outside of the undeniable evidence. In his ribcage, his heart was dancing, unable to stop as though it had been taken in by faerie frivolities, cursed to dance the night away until it could dance no more. Knowing he was flushed and that his hands trembled, he placed the mug back on the table, looking at Mathias seriously.

"I do, one day."

Mathias nodded, his face bright red, endearingly flustered by his own thoughtless mouth. If there had ever been a brain to mouth filter in the man's system, it had disappeared before Lukas had even met him, and, despite the ceaseless teasing from Emil about it, Lukas was quite taken by it. Then again, what about Mathias was Lukas not pathetically taken with?

"I see," Mathias nodded, pushing a piece of bacon around on his plate. Usually, Lukas realised, the entire plate would have been wolfed down by now, the Dane a much faster eater than he was. And yet, Lukas' plate lay empty save for crumbs, while Mathias was taking his time. Lukas stayed quiet, waiting for Mathias to sort out his brain, always needing a few moments to get his thoughts in order. Admittedly, this didn't always work, stories coming out in all sorts of hard to follow sequences of events that Lukas often needed to ask clarifying questions to, to which Mathias was more than happy to offer clarifying answers. But for now, he was buffering, as Lukas referred to it in his mind, and Lukas was more than happy to let him take his time.

"It's just that we've been married for two years, and that makes me so happy- Lukas, do you even know how much I love you? I would hang the moon and stars for you. I would sail to the bottom of the ocean and discover new life and name it after you. I would-"

"Mathias," Lukas gently guided. "What brought this on?"

"The joke," Mathias grumbled, and when Lukas stared at him, he clarified, "Where I called you a mum? It got me thinking it might be nice."

Surely he was dreaming, Lukas thought as he stared at the other's face. But he knew Mathias, could read his body and face better than he could read his own. His breath came short.

"It might be nice," he repeated, hanging the unspoken question in the air between them.

"It's dumb," Mathias shook both his hands before raising them to his face, hiding behind them. Almost instinctively, Lukas leaned forward, straining to hear the muffled, embarrassed voice that was more of a squeak.

" Elskede ," he whispered, tapping one of the hands. A sky-blue eye peeked out, meeting his, and Lukas felt the words get trapped in his throat because it was surely wishful thinking. But they were beyond jumping around each other like lovesick teenagers, unable to meet in the middle. With all the courage he could muster, he fought them out to ask, "Are you asking if I want to have kids with you?"

With a groan, Mathias sunk into his chair, a child in a grown up's body to the end. Watching him, Lukas first of all knew he was whipped for life when the sight of a grown, twenty-nine year old man half falling off his chair was giving him the same warm feeling as seeing him at their wedding, and secondly, that he was sure Mathias would be a good dad. Although they hadn't properly talked about it, the idea something very distant due to so many factors, Lukas had always wanted kids. He wasn't sure if he was suited for it exactly, with his moods and caprices, never having really learned what a normal family was supposed to look like. But Mathias? When it came to him, Lukas had not a single doubt; that child would be given the world.

"It was stupid, ignore-"

"I want to."

Dropping his hands, Mathias gaped at him for a few moments as though it was the first time he had laid eyes on him. Slowly, he finished, "...me." Lukas saw the exact moment the words processed through Mathias' mind, perceived it in the widening smile and the shine in his eyes, felt it in the way Mathias was at his side in an instant, knees banging against the wood floor in his haste, entirely unaware of the impact as he grasped Lukas' hand in both of his.

"Really?" he asked, eyes flitting across Lukas' face. Lowering his free hand, Lukas cupped his cheek. With a smile, he leaned down, pressing his mouth to the centre of Mathias' forehead, the man leaning into it like it was Lukas who was the sun and not the other way around, basking in it.

"Really," he confirmed. Without warning but with a yelp, he was swept off his feet, legs swinging helplessly as Mathias spun him bridal style, Lukas doing all he could to hold on for dear life as he wrapped his arms around his husband's shoulders. Even then, he heard himself laugh, pressing another kiss to Mathias' face, followed by another, and then another.

"I love you," Mathias informed him, and Lukas kissed his mouth, the words tasting as beautiful as they had sounded. Eagerly, Mathias pushed against him, the kiss deep and full of every spoken and unspoken word between them, one far more a wordsmith than the other.

"I love you too," Lukas replied, pressing the words into Mathias' skin and earning himself another enthusiastic spin. Leaning back as far as he dared, which was quite a lot as he knew Mathias would never drop him as certainly as he knew his own name, he tapped Mathias on the nose.

"Put me down, before my coffee grows cold. We can talk about it some more later."

"Okay," Mathias nodded, placing his husband back on his feet, but not before taking another kiss, brief but sweet. With a squeeze of his hand, Mathias let him go, sitting back down on his side of the table. He leaned on his elbows with a goofy grin, and Lukas wondered if he would regret enabling him so much.

Well , he figured, as the words I love you echoed through his mind, his chest, his heart, I suppose it is all worth it if it's him.

Notes:

Hello!!! <3

So I wrote this a very long time before I finished writing Take a Chance On Me, but most of this remained unaltered. They've just really earned being domestic and cute 😭❤️ genuinely I believe they are so in sync that Lukas doesn't even have to ask Mathias to make him coffee, Mat is just already on it.

I am also an advocate for DenNor parents. They would want to be parents and they would be amazing at it 💔 Finn and I have discussed this at length, and we think they're such girl dads. They'd adopt a little girl and treat her like their princess. They'd be absolutely obsessed with her. This is canon to me 💖

Hope you enjoyed this small slice of DenNor married life as well as Lukas' pov, I remember loving writing Mathias through Lukas' eyes after all this time.

Thank you for reading 🫶
