Work Text:
With her first paycheck since her promotion, Angela decided to purchase a porch swing. It's an item she's always wanted, representing a small luxury and a personal indulgence. Jane doesn't understand why her mother would choose to spend her hard-earned money on something so trivial. However, Maura has a different perspective on the matter. Maura sits down on the porch swing and invites Jane to join her. She encourages Jane to share what she would have spent the money on instead.
Without much thought, Jane blurts out, "Honestly, basketball or hockey tickets."
"And I would have gotten tickets to a symposium or an orchestral opening."
The girls acknowledge that everyone has their own unique interests, but Jane can't let the swing go.
"It's just, Ma never buys anything to be used outdoors. Aside from a welcome mat to screw with solicitors."
Maura chuckles lightly. "Perhaps Angela is simply trying something new and branching out."
"Look at you, talking about embracing change."
"I am open to some new experiences. If I weren't against gambling, I would bet that I could surprise you."
"Oh yeah?" Jane's expression turns challenging. "Then be spontaneous. Surprise me. Right here, right now."
Maura smirks and cups her friend's chin in her hand. She provocatively brings their faces close together and sensually runs her tongue along her lips, rather than initiating a kiss. Jane's breath catches in her throat as a surge of emotions and sensations floods her body. Maura then gently blows on her lips, intensifying the anticipation. Overwhelmed by the electrifying chemistry between them, Jane can't resist and reaches for Maura's hand, pulling her even closer.
Momentarily taken aback, Maura tries to ask Jane if she's sure about this turn of events, but Jane smothers her question with a soft smile. She leans in this time, lips meeting in an embrace of desire and certainty. The women lose themselves in the moment, with the porch swing swaying gently beneath them, a rhythmic backdrop. Jane is the one to break the kiss this time, both of them breathless.
"How long?" Maura asks.
"A long time," she whispers with anticipation lacing her words, "I want this, with you."
Maura's lips curve into a relieved smile, her eyes shining. "Me too, Jane," she confesses, "I just didn't know if you felt the same way. I mean, we joke about it, but-"
"I've always felt something more between us, Maura. Something deeper than friendship."
Maura's thumb gently traces circles on Jane's hand. "I've been afraid to lose our friendship, but now I see that we can have so much more."
The porch swing continues to sway, and Maura leans in for another kiss, their hunger for each other growing with every touch. Just as their lips are about to meet, the front door opening interrupts the moment. Angela looks between them, knowingly.
Without missing a beat, Angela asks, "Maura, are you staying for dinner?"
Jane and Maura separate to sit more casually on the swing, but they keep their hands on each other. Maura nods with a smile, her lip beginning to swell.
"Yes, Angela, I'd love to stay."
On cue, Frankie mischievously appears behind Angela's shoulder. "Maura, are you staying forever?"
"Oh, stop it, Frankie," Angela scolds, lightheartedly smacking her son's arm. "Maura has always been Jane's forever."
Frankie chuckles, "I know, Ma. I'm just glad you two finally figured it out."
Angela and Frankie exchange knowing glances before heading back inside, leaving Jane and Maura alone on the porch swing.
Jane turns to Maura with love and relief reflecting in her eyes. "I guess we won't have to hide anymore."
"No more hiding," Maura affirms. "We can embrace our love openly."
