Fighting inner demons

Summary:

Not sure when the next chapters will come, so sorry!
But I am honestly just not feeling this ship atm and can't get 100% in the feels of writing them properly, but I still have tons and tons of notes for this fic, so I still maybe will finish it one day. No promises though!
Sorry I'm never able to finish anything I start - sadly that's kinda my live tbh.

The Story starts at the point when Light gets rid of the ownership of the Death Note.
What if Light and L get closer while they investigate together (I mean, they honestly did) and maybe develop some kind of feelings for each another.
But when Light touches the notebook, his memories come back and everything becomes complicated…

Notes:

This will be my first fanfiction in English.
(I'm German, but I like to think my English is good enough, please bare with some mistakes though ^^)
So stay tuned and have fun reading. =)

Chapter 1: Thoughts

Chapter Text

It is the seventh day of the imprisoning of his main suspect and L is sitting in front of the screens wich are showing the cells where Light Yagami, Misa Amane and Souichirou Yagami are trapped in.
As the young detective pulls his knees closer to his body and fidgets with his bare feet, he looks at the young man, who's pleading to finally get out, through the slightly dimming screen on the right side.
Lost in thoughts about everything he thought he knew, L softly touches his lips with his thumb.
Without even noticing Matsuda and Aizawa standing around him, he sinks deeper and deeper into his thoughts, with a heavy feeling in his chest.

'I was absolutely sure of it. Although I told everyone else it's around 5%, deep inside I was 100% sure from the beginning, that Light Yagami is Kira.
I knew it the first time I talked to him in the university. The way his narrow eyes absorbing mine.
He is such a calm, cool and collected guy, acting like he doesn't care at all, but I noticed every little hint possible.
This small drop of sweat running down his significant face while we talked to each other and I announced to him that I am "that L".
I noticed how he slightly pitched his eyes, inhaling air to regain his calmness and then looking at me as if he was the innocence in person.
But I won't fall for that shit. I am not so naive like the rest of the task force.
I saw the devilish spark in his vision when I replied to him, that I think he might be Kira. I could see his nervousness, although he was covering it up pretty well and supposed to be just curious about my assumptions.
I was playing a dangerous game at the time and I knew that this challenge might be my last, either win or die.
Nonetheless I have to admit that I had a lot more fun the whole time than I have had in years.
Also I kinda actually started seeing kind of a friend in Light Yagami.
To be honest, my first friend in my life, and how sad it would be if in the end it turns out that my only friend I ever had is actually the enemy who's trying to kill me...
The puzzle pieces just fit together so perfectly, leading me to the events that are happening now.
At latest after we were nearly 100% sure that Misa Amane is the second Kira, because of the evidence we found on the tapes, it was set in stone inside my mind.
Light Yagami is Kira and I knew that right from the start.'

But now, in this short moment which feels like an eternity, while looking into the desperate eyes of this young man, L unexpectedly wasn't so sure anymore.
Somehow, Light Yagami's behavior abruptly changed a few minutes ago when he was talking something about 'getting rid of his pride' and then the young prisoner looked unconscious for a second, followed by a confused look around himself.
And after he lifted his head towards the camera again, everything in his whole expression changed.
His eyes are now big and round, perhaps somehow afraid.
And L surely has never been more confused in his life than he is right now.
'Nothing Light is saying makes any sense to me, yet somehow I have the feeling he is telling the truth for the first time.'
The detective bites his thumb a little.
Another plea from the imprisoned man brought the in thoughts drowning man back to reality.
"Ryuzaki, please! I must have been out of my mind. Get me out of here immediately, we are just wasting our time.
I am not Kira!" the suspect shouts loudly.
L directly answered honestly "No, we can't let you out." after a deep breath he added a silent "Sorry..." and continues to fixate Light as if he was his prey.
Even Aizawa and Matsuda must agree on this point.
Matsuda repeats L's statement "The killing stopped when we imprisoned Light..." though he says it more sadly, stringy hair hanging over the upper half of the childlike face.
Aizawa is the one who says out loud what everyone in this room is thinking at the moment. "It is all clear, doesn't it? Can't we just decide that Light Yagami is Kira and we are finally done with this damn, cursed case?" he exhales harshly, knowing that this will probably break their boss's heart.
A silent murmur coming from the young detective caught the attention of the others, who were curious to hear what strange things he would eventually end up saying.
"I am not so sure anymore… Plus, we need a proof and have to find out how Kira kills his victims."
All of them hang their heads in defeat, while Light Yagami sits on the cold floor at least as confused as the others.

Just 8 days ago Light sat confident inside his cell, somehow thinking it is the right thing to do so.
But as if a lightning had suddenly struck him, he was completely overwhelmed by his emotions.
Rationally he knows that L is right to not let him out while every clue points exactly in his direction.
Still, deep inside himself he knows it the best.
'I am not Kira... I am not Kira... I am not Kira...'
Light has been repeating that phrase in his head for the last days over and over again, as if he's insane.
The young man certainly believes he is slowly loosing his mind.
He sits tied up next to his bed, sinking into his repetitive thoughts.
'Why am I even here in the first place? No matter how hard I think about it, it just doesn't make any sense. What possessed me to think, I could actually possibly be Kira? I don't get it.'
While Light sits there drowning in depressions, he suddenly notices the noise of the microphone, followed by the detective's calculating, cold voice. "Are you listening, Light?"
He weakly replies with a faint "What is it, Ryuzaki?", slowly trying to hold his head up.
L clears his throat "Well... Since the day we arrested you, Kira is no longer active. It's been two weeks now, don't you think it is time to reveal the truth, Light Yagami? Will you finally confess to us that you are indeed Kira?"
'Nonsense!' Light thinks angry while he answers with a frustrate sounding respond "You are completely wrong about this, I'll tell you as many times as necessary: I - am - not - Kira!" he emphasizes every single word of the last sentence as clear as possible.
After a deep sigh he continues "Even though I understand that you suspect me, Ryuzaki, I must know best. I don't know how, but someone must have set a trap on me, I can't explain the whole thing any other way. Because I know that I am not Kira!" The man is nearly screaming now, obviously very desperate.
Silence is the worst thing when you are locked up in a prison cell, only hoping for someone to believe in you.
"God damn it, I am really not Kira, you have to believe me! Come on Ryuzaki, zoom in and look into my eyes - are those the eyes of a liar? Tell me!"
His large, round eyes stare sincerely through the camera directed at L, who was caught off guard by this view.
Can those pretty hazel eyes really be those of a cold blooded killer?
The detective is clearly surprised by the statements of the two suspects, who seem to have changed drastically for quite some time now - both, their behavior and the way they speak.
L looks back and forth between the three screens, completely blocking out the chatter of the two men behind him.
His huge gray eyes, which have deep dark shadows beneath them, stare irritatedly into nothingness.
After he notices again and again while interrogate with Misa Amane that also her statements seem absolutely sincere, he admits to himself for the first time in his life that he might have been wrong…
'Now I don't understand anything anymore…'
