Work Text:

The daycare session ended with a cheerful bell, and Henry joined other parents awaiting their little ones. Soon, the door opened, and a group of lively toddlers emerged. In the midst of them was the two-year-old Knoa Gabriel Jamie Fox-Diaz in a white shirt paired with a red denim jumper, his chubby cheeks adorned with a wide smile, light brown curly hair bouncing as he toddled toward Henry.

"Daddy!" Knoa exclaimed, his face lighting up with a wide smile.

Henry crouched down, opening his arms as Knoa barreled into a hug. "My little lovey! How was your day?"

Knoa pulled back, his eyes lit up as he proudly presented his hand with the star stamp. “Look, Daddy! I got stars for being good today!” he exclaimed.

Henry’s eyes widened with delight. “That’s fantastic, my lovey! What did you do to earn it?” he asked, bending down to Knoa’s height with a warm smile.

Knoa grinned mischievously. "I helped my friend Clara find her lost teddy bear. Miss Thompson said I was very kind."

Henry smiled, his eyes reflecting pride. "I'm so proud of you, my love! Let's celebrate with your favorite snack, okay?" he suggested, ruffling Knoa’s light brown curls affectionately.

Knoa’s eyes lit up even more. “Ice cream?”

Henry chuckled and scooped him up into his arms. “You got it, lovey. Ice cream it is.”

Henry entered the ice cream shop, Knoa still in his arms, and gently placed him down. The colorful array of ice cream flavors awaited them, and Henry smiled as he crouched down beside Knoa.

“Alright, what flavor do you want?” Henry asked, pointing to the vibrant display.

Knoa’s eyes widened with delight as he surveyed the options. After a thoughtful pause, he pointed to the bubblegum-flavored ice cream with a grin.

Henry chuckled. “Bubblegum it is. One scoop or two?” he asked.

Knoa held up two tiny fingers excitedly. Henry nodded, “Two it is, my love!”

As the staff worked on Knoa’s treat, Henry noticed a figure outside the glass window– a photographer discreetly snapping pictures. His protective instincts kicked in, and Henry subtly shielded Knoa from the paparazzi’s view. He paid for the ice cream, then guided his child to a quieter spot away from prying lenses.

Knoa licked his ice cream happily, oblivious to the scrutiny. Meanwhile, Henry kept a watchful eye on their surroundings, ready to shield his son from any unwanted attention.

Afterward, Henry secured Knoa in his booster seat, the unease from the paparazzi encounter lingering in his mind. Despite Knoa's laughter, a hint of worry shadowed Henry's face. With a gentle thud, he closed the car door and settled into the driver's seat.

Knoa chattered away about the star on his hand and the fun day at school. However, Henry’s thoughts were elsewhere, his eyes occasionally darting to the rearview mirror, checking for any photographers.

The memories of his own childhood, constantly trailed by the intrusive lens of paparazzi cameras, resurfaced in his mind. The weight of royal expectations and the invasion of his privacy during vulnerable moments left an indelible mark on Henry.

Though now a grown man and a father himself, the past scrutiny remained in his soul. The mere sight of a photographer triggered a complex emotions – a blend of frustration, nostalgia, and a sense of vulnerability. The memories, like old wounds, still carried a sting, and Henry couldn’t help but feel a tinge of sadness for his younger self and, now, a protective instinct for his son.

Henry pulled into the parking lot of the law firm. He unbuckled Knoa from his booster seat, then swung him up into his arms. The air filled with Knoa’s laughter as Henry planted a gentle kiss on his forehead.

He pushed open the glass door of the law firm, stepping into the air-conditioned lobby. His son perched on his hip, observed the surroundings with wide-eyed curiosity. “Daddy, is this where Papa works?” Knoa asked.

Henry nodded, gesturing toward the elevator. “Let’s go surprise Papa,” he replied.

Entering the elevator, Knoa’s excitement surged as the doors closed. “Daddy, do you think Papa will be happy to see us?” he asked, his blue eyes wide with anticipation.

Henry smiled down at his son, caressing his light brown curls. “Of course, he will. Papa loves surprises, especially when they involve you.”

Stepping into the floor of his husband’s office, they were met with warm greetings and waves from Alex’s colleagues. Knoa, in particular, waved enthusiastically, drawing smiles from those around him.

After a brief walk, they reached Alex’s office. Henry knocked on the door, and as it opened, Alex, finishing a call, turned with a wide smile. Rushing over, he warmly embraced Henry and Knoa. Alex planted a kiss on Henry’s lips and then bent down to affectionately peck Knoa on his chubby cheek.

Their two-year-old's excitement knew no bounds as he explored Alex's office, his little hands reaching out to touch everything within his grasp. The colorful law books, the sleek desk, and even the pens on Alex's workstation all became subjects of their child's inspection.

Alex glanced at Henry who is quietly observing their toddler with a small smile. He couldn’t help but notice a change in his husband’s demeanor. His usually cheerful husband seemed somewhat subdued.

Alex approached, his hand finding its place on Henry’s waist. “Everything alright?” he asked, concern clear on his face.

Henry sighed, his eyes focused on Knoa as their child rearranged the pens on Alex's desk. "I saw a paparazzi while we were getting ice cream. It just... brought back memories, you know?"

Alex tightened his grip on Henry’s waist, offering a supportive anchor. His concern deepened as he listened to Henry. “I know, baby. Those memories can be tough. But look at us now – a family. We’ll shield Knoa from all of that. Together,” he responded.

He pulled Henry into an embrace, whispering comforting words to his husband. Just as they savored the moment, Knoa's cheerful voice added, "Let me join too!"

Their laughter echoed through the room as Knoa sprinted towards them, his little feet tapping on the floor. In an instant, Alex swooped down, lifting Knoa into his arms with Henry holding on to them.

As they drove home, Alex, behind the wheel this time, turned to Henry with a thoughtful expression. “You know, our wedding anniversary is just around the corner. Capri, perhaps? A perfect escape for us and Knoa.”

Henry’s eyes softened with a warm smile as he gazed at Alex. “Capri sounds like a dream. It would be a wonderful, just the three of us,” he replied, reaching out to hold Alex’s hand.

A year had passed, and Henry and Alex found themselves preparing for their child’s first day at preschool. Henry tiptoed into Knoa’s room and quietly approached the small Lightning McQueen car bed, where Knoa slept peacefully, his light brown curls slightly tousled.

With a tender touch, Henry softly called out, “Good morning, my lovey.”

Knoa blinked his big blue eyes open, a wide grin spreading across his face upon seeing his daddy. Henry emerged from the toddler’s bedroom, scooping Knoa in his arms. The little one's small hands played with the strands of Henry’s blond hair, his eyes widening as he observed Alex in the kitchen, busy preparing breakfast.

“Papa, don’t you have work?” Knoa asked as Henry settled him down in the chair.

Alex turned, a spatula in hand, and met Knoa’s gaze. A warm smile graced his lips as he responded, “Not today, my angel.”

He presented a plate of pancakes adorned with a smiley face made of fresh fruits on the table. As Knoa’s eyes widened with delight at the breakfast, Alex added, “Papa cleared his schedule just for your special day at preschool. We’re going to make it unforgettable.”

Alex leaned down, his face coming level with Knoa's. Their noses touched gently, and then Alex pressed a soft kiss to the top of Knoa's head while Henry couldn't help but smile, watching the exchange between the two.

The breakfast table was soon cleared, and Alex, with a gentle smile, took charge of giving Knoa a bath. Henry, in the meantime, moved to prepare their child's preschool uniform. The uniform was a crisp ensemble – a light blue polo shirt with the Montessori school's emblem embroidered on the pocket and navy blue shorts. The sight of the tiny uniform brought a wave of nostalgia to Henry as he recalled his own first day at school.

While laying out the uniform in his child’s bed, memories from that day flooded back – flashes of press cameras capturing every moment of his own first school day. Henry shook his head, attempting to dispel those intrusive memories, redirecting his focus to ensuring Knoa’s uniform was neat and ready for the big day.

Alex entered the room, holding Knoa in a blue fluffy towel. Henry looked up, meeting Alex’s understanding gaze. Without words, Alex sensed the shift in Henry’s mood and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. Together, they continued their morning routine – Henry assisting Knoa into his uniform, and Alex gently combing through their child’s soft curls.

Once dressed, Knoa looked up at his parents with a dimpled smile inherited from his Daddy. Unable to resist the moment, Henry and Alex pulled out their phones, capturing snapshots of Knoa in his adorable preschool uniform. The toddler struck a little pose with a mischievous twinkle in his blue eyes, feeling the attention.

As the camera shutters clicked, Knoa asked with a pout, “Papa, Daddy, do you think they will like me?”

Alex and Henry exchanged a knowing glance, recognizing the universal worry that came with stepping into a new environment. They knelt down on either side of their child.

“Absolutely, my little lovey,” Henry replied, brushing a strand of escaped curls from Knoa’s forehead. “You’re kind, friendly, and everyone will be lucky to have you as a friend.”

Alex chimed in, “And remember, Papa and Daddy are always here for you. If you ever feel unsure or need a friend, we’ve got your back, okay?”

Knoa’s smile returned, his heart comforted by the reassuring words of his fathers. “Okay,” he said softly, grasping his father’s hands as they stepped out of the house.

They soon arrived at the Montessori school, the air filled with excitement and anticipation. The school's vibrant exterior welcomed families, and the sound of children's laughter filled the surroundings. Knoa's eyes roamed with wonder around the area as they approached the entrance, clutching his fathers' hands.

Alex grinned, raising his camera. “Alright, Knoa, stand right here in front. Let’s capture this moment.”

Knoa excitedly posed in front of the school, beaming with joy. Alex adjusted the camera to capture the anticipation of their child's first day, and Henry smiled proudly as he quietly watched from the side.

Alex turned to Henry, a gentle smile lighting up his face. “Now, love, join our son for a pose. Let’s make this memory complete,” he said, his eyes filled with affection. Henry chuckled softly, nodding.

Standing beside Knoa, Henry held his child’s hand as Alex framed the shot. The camera clicked, bringing peace to Henry's heart. In this quiet scene of his child's first day at school, he found reassurance, knowing that Knoa was safe and protected from the intrusive chaos that marked his own childhood.

Henry watched with pride as Knoa walked into the school, his small figure disappearing through the entrance. He held Alex’s hand, the reassuring grip offering support.

“He’s going to be fine,” Alex said, squeezing Henry’s hand gently.

“Yes,” Henry murmured.

Notes:

I write this out of spur moment. I hope you enjoyed this. Btw, regarding their child’s name in this story, Knoa means “peaceful” which what I want Henry and Alex’s life is after all they’ve been through. Gabriel of course comes from Alex’s second name and Jamie is a play from Henry’s fourth name James. Happy reading ^_^
