Work Text:
To be fair, Hoseok didn’t mean to find it.
He had only been tending to his Sunday chores while Yoongi went out and got them breakfast. It was the same old, same old, no big deal. Well. Until he came across it.
It. A small black box, hidden underneath a pile of clothes in their bedroom (a lecture for the older man in the near future to stop doing that ). A small black box that held a silver band inside – a ring that was definitely made for Hoseok. It was perfect in every way: the perfect size, the perfect color, engraved with a perfect message – my battery, my sun, my life – just perfect in every way.
It.
Overcome with joy, Hoseok did his best not to scream, cry, or pass out when he tried it on. For one, it’d be embarrassing to explain to his neighbors what had happened. And two, it’d be more than awkward explaining to Yoongi that he found something that was originally supposed to be a surprise.
And speaking of Yoongi, did he even know that the ring was in here? Had he placed it like this on purpose, hoping that Hoseok wouldn’t find it? Was this another one of his genius plans?
Hoseok hummed to himself then, thinking. He had long since taken a break, choosing instead to admire his ring ( his ring! ). While he wasn’t necessarily a neat freak, Yoongi knew how much the younger man enjoyed a clean home. He tidied up daily, but Sundays were for thorough cleanings: dusting, wiping down, laundry, et cetera, et cetera. If Yoongi had meant to hide the ring as a surprise, he wouldn’t have left it out to be found.
Which only meant one thing – Yoongi had misplaced the ring. Or… “lost” it.
“Ah, Yoongs,” Hoseok sighed, too enamored by the situation to really be exasperated. “What am I going to do with you?”
Now, he could go about this two ways: a) act like he never saw the ring in the first place and leave it in the pile of clothes (which was absolutely not going to happen) or b) he could confront Yoongi about it (but he didn’t want to do that either because – Yoongi had obviously wanted this to be a surprise, and he didn’t want to completely spoil it).
But what else could he do? There wasn’t another way around this… unless…
Hoseok smiled softly as he looked at the silver band on his ring finger. He remembered all the long nights Yoongi spent working overtime, all the moments that the older man gazed longingly at each jewelry store they passed, all the promises he whispered to Hoseok when he thought he was sleeping, and how they led to this moment.
My battery, my sun, my life.
Min Yoongi was amazing.

Min Yoongi was fucked.
No matter how much he wracked his brain, he couldn’t understand how he had lost the ring. Hoseok’s ring. The ring that he was going to use to propose to Hoseok. That ring.
“Don’t lose hope yet, Yoongi,” Namjoon said, patting his friend’s shoulder sympathetically. Yoongi had been sulking at their house for the past half-hour after coming back empty-handed from his frantic search. “Are you sure you checked everywhere in your apartment? Your car? Did you leave it at the jeweler’s maybe?”
“No, I checked everywhere several times. Hell, I even turned the studio upside down just to make sure it didn’t fall behind the equipment or anything,” Yoongi groaned, feeling a headache coming on. He’d be lying if he said that he wasn’t losing sleep over this because he definitely was. “I don’t get it. Who fucking loses their partner’s engagement ring a week before their proposal?”
“I imagine many people do,” Jin said unhelpfully as he took a sip of tea. “You know, Yoongi-yah, if you just go and tell Hobi what happened, I’m sure he’ll understand. He’ll laugh at you first of course, but he’ll definitely understand. You know he’ll say yes even if you didn’t have a ring… right?”
“I know, but. He deserves a ring, hyung. I told him I would give the best ring I could find, and I worked super hard for it too.” Yoongi sighed softly then, suddenly tired. “I know Hoba would be happy with just me proposing, but is it silly that I envisioned how it would all go the moment I bought the ring? From the engraving to the dinner, everything? I just wanted this to be perfect because Hoseok’s perfect, and now – now I don’t even have a ring for our dinner this weekend.”
“Yoongi,” Namjoon started, but Jin quickly said, “You better not cancel the dinner!”
“I won’t,” Yoongi said with a sad smile, “but Hoba’s probably going to be disappointed.”
“I don’t think so,” Jin looked at Yoongi imploringly. “For Hobi… it’s always been you, Yoongi. No matter what. Trust hyung on this.”

“Everything okay?”
Yoongi looked over to see Hoseok watching him closely. They were at the restaurant Yoongi had reserved for them (a private, candle-lit area on the rooftop just for them), and while the food and drinks were delightful, the older man couldn't help playing with his food. He never did find the ring, even after another last try at the jeweler's thirty minutes away.
Yoongi sighed, his stomach in knots. He might as well come clean. Hoseok would definitely laugh at his slip-up, but would he really deny his proposal if Yoongi didn't present a ring?
“Hey, Hoba, there's, uh, there's something I need to tell you.”
“Okay, but can I say something first?” Hoseok asked, and Yoongi was surprised at how serious his usually bubbly boyfriend suddenly looked. He nodded. “Hyung… I love you. You’ve been my best friend since forever and my boyfriend for just as long. Every moment we’ve spent together has been nothing but amazing, even the disagreements, and I mean it when I say you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“Hoba…” Yoongi said softly, eyes stinging with tears. It didn’t help that Hoseok was also getting emotional, his eyes shining from the candlelight. “I love you too. You know that right? I love you so much.”
“I know, Yoongs, I know,” Hoseok sniffled. “It hurt watching you work so many all-nighters back then, draining yourself completely, but I know it’s because you wanted the best for me. For us. I’m so proud of the man you’ve become, Yoongi, and I’m so grateful that you chose to love me and be with me for so long. I, ah, I…” Hoseok paused then, suddenly looking nervous.
“What is it?” Yoongi asked, confused. He wiped his eyes before taking Hoseok’s hands into his own, intertwining their fingers. He gave a comforting squeeze. “You can tell me, Hoba.”
Chuckling wetly, Hoseok shook his head before taking a deep breath. He pulled his hands away slowly as he stood up – and got down on one knee in front of Yoongi. Yoongi watched in shock as Hoseok dug into his pocket and pulled out a small black ring box. The same small black ring box he’d been searching for weeks ago.
“Wait, how did you –”
“Min Yoongi,” Hoseok said as he opened the box, “will you please marry me?”
Yoongi choked on a laugh and a sob as he peered into the box. The silver band he had bought for Hoseok was there, safe. And nestled next to a black band. Nodding wildly, Yoongi watched as Hoseok took the black band and slid it carefully onto his ring finger. It was a perfect fit, a perfect color, a perfect everything.

“I found it under a pile of clothes by the way,” Hoseok confessed later as they lay in bed. He admired their rings in the moonlight, listening to the steady rhythm of Yoongi’s heartbeat. “I don’t think I need to lecture you about why you need to tidy up anymore, right?”
“Mm,” Yoongi said sleepily, barely able to keep his eyes open as he rubbed Hoseok’s hip slowly. The sight melted Hoseok’s heart. “I was so… so scared… that I lost it…”
“Yeah?”
“Mm… wanted you to have it cause… you… you deserve the best… Hoba…”
“It’s the best, Yoongi,” Hoseok said. He leaned up to kiss Yoongi’s forehead before snuggling against his body once more. “You’re the best. You know that, right? Yoongi?”
When Yoongi didn’t respond, Hoseok saw that the older man was finally asleep, his body lax and mouth slightly open. Smiling, Hoseok stared at their rings again. His silver band stuck out against Yoongi’s black band, and yet they complemented each other effortlessly – just like their wearers.
Hoseok sighed softly and closed his eyes as Yoongi’s body heat lulled him to sleep. Tomorrow, he’d probably scream, cry, and pass out over finally being engaged to the love of his life, but that would happen tomorrow. Tonight, Hoseok basked in the reality that Min Yoongi was amazing and his and his and his.
My love, my moon, my life.
