The Five Stages of Disappointment in Straight People

Summary:

The Five Stages of Disappointment in Straight People: Blissful Ignorance, Disbelief At The Audacity Of Heteros, Anger, Bargaining, and finally, Non-Acceptance.

Notes:

i haven't read aftg in almost two years, so canon is merely a suggestion at this point. this is set roughly a year ish past the events of the books and if my timelines are weird blame it on me not actually knowing anything about college sports

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

They really didn't know why they were here. Kevin had said something about watching other sports to “diversify their playing style”, but they could have done this much more comfortably with recordings of the games. But somehow, all the Foxes had ended up here. On a basketball court. Watching a basketball game.

Neil was between Andrew and Allison, with the others on either side. How Kevin had managed to find seats for all nine Foxes plus Wymack, Neil would never know. The first half of the game was fairly boring, and Neil was struck by just how mind numbing it was to watch other people play a sport he barely even know the rules of. Infinitely more interesting was the solid warmth of Andrew’s shoulder pressed against his.

Farther down the aisle, Wymack stood to make his way to the bathroom during the break. Later, Neil would wonder if this movement was what drew the cameraman’s attention, even in a packed stadium. Not two seconds after Wymack walked away, Neil looked up to see the camera focused on his face and the person next to him, with a cheesy border of hearts and pink swirls, like Cupid himself had vomited a frame for apparent couples.

Only, it appeared the cameraman was not guided by Cupid or any other kind of common sense, as he had focused the frame on Neil and Allison, with their respective partners barely visible on either side. In this moment, both Neil and Allison visibly went through what they would later call the Five Stages of Disappointment in Straight People: Blissful Ignorance, Disbelief At The Audacity Of Heteros, Anger (Murderous Rage, in Andrew’s case ), Bargaining, and Non-Acceptance.

The cameraman remained blissfully unaware of the imminent danger he had placed himself in, with Andrew currently only visible in the shot by a shoulder and some stray blond hairs at the very edge, the expression on his face covered by the nauseatingly pink border. After a few beats of dumbfounded glances between the four, Neil leans toward Andrew, dipping out of frame as Allison does the same towards Renee. A pause as he confirms Andrew is okay with what he's about to do.

The cameraman has frozen for the moment, unsure of which direction to swing the lens now that both subjects had dipped out of frame in opposite directions.

Andrew has fully turned towards Neil now, has had the same idea. The moment the cameraman makes his decision, he swings the lens to follow Neil as he leans into Andrew, meeting him for a quick kiss as Andrew raises his hand, middle finger up and centered in the obnoxious frame.

On Neil's other side, Allison has pulled her girlfriend into a much more heated kiss, and the cameraman only swings towards them for a moment before moving on to find a couple that wasn't currently trying to swallow each others tongues.Only once the camera had swung to the other side of the stadium did Allison and Renee seperate, settling back into their seats.

Notes:
