Wicked Game

Summary:

The Skies and the Ocean were never meant to touch each other.

Taejin wasn't the only one that died that day, Vin's and Zack's soul were left behind.

Notes:

Wicked Game by Chris Isaak was what made me write this, and also was played on repeat as I wrote this one-shot, definetly recommend it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

I'd never dream i'd lose somebody like you

It happened, Vin Jin killed Cheon Taejin, his lifeless body on the bottom of Vin Jin as he breathed heavily looking at his bloody hands.

“VI-” Vin’s eyes suddenly widened as he saw Zack looking at him in shock, countless thoughts were running around Vin’s mind.

Scared.

Oh, how scared he was, he couldn’t lose someone he loves again.

Before Zack could even say something and approach Vin, Vin ran away, Zack thought he just didn’t want to face Zack at the moment, he’d come to school soon and they could talk. Zack couldn’t have been more wrong. Days passed and he started to feel a heavy weight on his heart, he went to Mary to ask if she knew what had happened to Vin, “I’m..not sure Zack, I’m sorry.” She was as broken as Zack, maybe even more, as she lost her only family. Weeks passed, Zack started searching for Vin, asking people if they had seen him.

“No.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t.”

“Sorry sir.”

“I haven’t.”

“If I see him I’ll let you know. I hope you find him, Sir.”

Months passed, nothing, not a single clue to where Vin could be. Those months turned into years, there was not a single day Vin didn’t run through Zack’s mind nor a clue of where he could be, was he even alive, Zack wondered.

You’re starting to look really weird, oh yea your face is out of place and I can’t make you out

As for Vin, he used all the money he had and moved to a small town in Finland, where he settled in a forest, he didn’t want to have human connections more than necessary, he was a monster, not a human. Two or three times a week Vin would work for a small restaurant in town, just so he could afford little food and water, and paints. He burned some wood to keep him warm in the severe winter, and showered in a lake nearby, as he could also not afford electricity. To pass his time and prevent him from going insane, he used to paint Zack, his muse, all over the walls, write letters, or just write about the man he loved in general. At first the paintings clearly showed that Zack was the one he painted, but as the years passed, Vin forgot how Zack looked like, what Zack’s name was, he just knew, he was just sure he loved that man more than anything on earth, and he could only paint a faceless face, a faceless face of the one he loved the most. It helped him to not go crazy, but it didn’t prevent physical diseases from happening, Vin couldn’t afford anything better, and so he dies on the back of the house still in his 40s, and the house was again abandoned, this time with so many memories of someone’s muse.

The world is only gonna break your heart

After 40 years of Vin’s disappearance Zack was, well…, alive, he tried to forget him, tried to live on his life without him, but it didn’t work too well, a day didn’t pass by where Zack didn’t think of Vin, even at almost 60 years old. All he wanted was to know how Vin was, or if he even was alive. Soon he would figure that out.

That was when, some teen was walking by the forest where vin used to live and goes in, curious about it, he looks around the house, every letter, every note, every painting Vin made for Zack, he found out this love must’ve been between two men based on some of Vin’s letters, so he makes a post about love on his social media, and how whoever lived on this house must’ve loved their partner. “Zack, my star” was the word used in most of the letters, until it was only “my star”. This reaches Zack’s child, 13 at the time, who found the paintings a lot like their father, and the name also being the same made them wonder. The child went to Zack, talking about the post they saw and how cool it was, immediately Zack’s eyes widened and he asked how did someone find that. “Apparently the person in the house died years ago of some sickness, the people from his village didn’t have much information.” “Oh.” was the only sound that could come out of Zack’s mouth before tears ran down his eyes. This made his child worried, asking what happened and how did Zack know that person. “Angel, do you remember when I used to tell you about the time the skies and the ocean held each other? Vin was the skies…to my ocean.” Zack’s child finally understands and hugs their father tightly.

A few months have passed and Mary hears the news that they had made Vin’s house into a museum, Mary calls Zack to ask if he wanted to take a trip there, Mary thought it’d be good not only to help Zack and for him to be able to be close to those memories, but also for her to see the last remainings of her best friend, her brother. Mary, Mira, Zack, and Zack’s child all go to Finland, to see what is left of Vin. Zack decided to buy all hours for them only for that day, he also explained his relationship with Vin, and Mary also showed that she was legally Vin’s sister, which would let them actually touch the letters, and whatever Vin had left.

As they enter and look around, Mira, who was holding Zack’s hand notice how he started shaking, before entering he still was in denial that Vin was dead, but being in the place Vin lived for 20 years made him realize it was true, Mira tried to comfort Zack, she knew it was for sure hard for him to deal with it, as Zack’s child didn’t knew what to say. “This house is your love sweetie, don’t cry, he wouldn’t want to see you broken.” One of the guards is confused on why the man was acting that way, but the other guard knew what was happening and approached Mary to ask if they wanted to go to Vin’s room, something that was not yet open to the public, since they didn’t put labels on the objects. Mary says thank you to the guard and they enter the room, the first thing noticeable is the wall close to Vin’s bed filled with a single painting, Vin’s eye with a reflection of what it seemed to be Zack, but because of Vin forgetting how Zack looked like, he was not able to portrait him very well. Along with the painting there was a sentence on the bottom “For you forever will be the stars in my skies.” Zack stops for a moment, looking at it, processing what he was seeing, his body loses movement and he falls to the ground, crying and holding his heart, oh it ached so much, and his lungs, they seemed, closed. But Zack wasn’t the only one surprised, but his child looked at the painting perplexed, “His eyes…We are the same.” As Mira hugged Zack, Mary tried her best to explain everything to Zack’s child, and how he adopted them. Eventually Zack is able to get up to hug his child, who was extremely hurt by seeing Zack in that state. After a few moments of comforting, Zack starts looking at the other things, boxes with pictures of Zack and of the two of them, the letters and notes. Zack held them carefully on his hands, passing his fingers through the words, his lover’s last words.

Zack realized that maybe in this universe, the skies were not meant to hold the ocean, nor the ocean meant to be close to the skies.
