Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

You were a student at the Sumeru Academy, the most prestigious university in all of Teyvat. You were studying medicine, and you were always one of the best students of your generation, having a great future ahead of you according to many of the professors who praised your responsibility and perseverance in both the theory and practice of this profession.

You lived in a small apartment, your education was partially on grants and you lived on the pension you had obtained from your deceased parents, as well as on that slight salary you had from doing the occasional job in the little free time you had left after school or on your vacations.

But, in any case, you were sure that you could succeed at some point in your life, and that you were happy even with all the difficulties you could sometimes have.

A quiet and normal life, something that, even with some problems or deficiencies, never made you get down.

Oh well... At least until you had met "him".

That blue-haired boy, with those blood red eyes that always showed indifference to his around, and that expression of very poor friends that he used to keep on his face at all times. Still, if it weren't for that, you could swear that he was one of the most handsome men you had ever seen in your entire life.

You almost always met him in the library of the Academy, or more recently, in the classes you began to share, something that had disconcerted you a little, because he appeared a little older than you and all your classmates.

However, soon after you would find out that this boy was Zandik, the student with the highest average and academic performance in the entire Medical School and in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Yes, he was a few years older than you, but that was because from the beginning of his studies he had always had a rather "curious" matriculation unlike those who went through the normal curriculum.

Always alone, always in his studies, it was very rare to see him living with other students or teachers beyond what was necessary, so, in a way, seeing him alone during recess and meals had made you feel bad.

You had lived these experiences once before, and you knew how much loneliness hurt.

And knowing that, you thought it would be best to approach him, to try to keep him some kind of company after so much time alone in that place.

So, after thinking about it a lot and taking enough courage in one of those breaks, you went to that tree where the boy was sitting, so focused on his book that he had hardly noticed your presence because you had covered him with your shadow, looking at you without taking his eyes off those pages.

“Do you need something, Miss?" He asked. His voice was even more soothing and beautiful than you had imagined from his appearance.

“Can I sit with you?" You asked directly, making him look a little more confused, looking around.

“There are many empty benches all over campus.... Why would you want to be on the floor that can get your clothes dirty?" He said, with some annoyance.

“Well... I just think that sometimes it's more comfortable on the grass, even more so now that it's summer," You said, sitting down next to him without waiting for his answer, "Oh, well.... Is it bothering you?”

“...No” He answered, turning his gaze once again to the book. “As long as you respect my personal space and don't touch me, I don't care.”

“All right, then I'll just sit here.” You affirmed with a big smile, without receiving any answer again for the next few seconds, until they turned to minutes, both of you keeping silent, something that made you a bit desperate after a while. "By the way, my name is _____; what's your name?”

You asked, because even though you already knew the answer, you knew it would be strange to start calling him by his name without even having met or spoken to him before.

However, your question had remained in the air without receiving any answer, something that had left you with a bittersweet taste of having been totally ignored by that guy. Surely now he thought you were a bother.

“Zandik." You heard from his pretty voice. “My name is Zandik.”

For a few seconds, your eyes had connected again in a short moment, to the point where both of you were staring at each other, until you realized this and quickly interrupted the contact between the two of you. Zandik going back to that great indifference, and you with a small blush on your cheeks.

Though, at the same time, a small smile had formed on your lips, bringing you a little closer towards him.

“It's a pleasure to meet you, Zandik.”

Oh, that phrase and that meeting that was going to change your entire life from now on.

How you were going to regret having that precious heart and having approached a wolf who pretended to be a simple lamb among all the others.
