CHAPTER 1:
Jasmyne woke up to gunshots, again, she sat up rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She slowly stood up and rolled the sleeping bag up. She looked at who was making the ruckus. It was Major, he was shooting at some distant zombies.
Diane and Katlin were eating some canned beans, it was the only food left. They would have to make a store run real soon. Jasmyne walked over to them and sat with the two girls opening a can of beans
“When did you two wake up?” Jasmyne asked, trying to start a conversation.
Diane swallowed her mouth full of beans “I woke up about maybe two hours ago, I think Katlin woke up a little after, and Major…… I don’t think he got any sleep” Diane sighed looking over at Major who was watching for more zombies.
Jasmyne took a spoon full of her food then said, “He really needs to sleep. Last night I tried offering to take watch but he declined”.
Diane stood up, her knees cracking while doing so. She put the bean can in a garbage bag and tossed her spoon in the bucket of water they had. They kept one spoon and one fork for each person so they didn’t have to worry about keeping plastic ones. They kept all the trash in bags to throw them away instead of making the earth more of a mess. I mean eventually the zombie apocalypse would have to stop, right?
“Yeh that figures, the man’s stubborn” Diane spoke after sitting back down next to the two.
After that little interaction they just sat in silence until Major walked over grabbing his bag in one swift motion, “We should get going, don’t want anymore zombies showing up” Major grabbed his hatchet and put it in its respected place on his side. Katlin stood grabbing her stuff, though she didn’t have much to carry since all her stuff is in the same bag as Majors, her dad. Diane started washing the dishes they had in the bucket, it was only three spoons. She then dumped the dirty water out and grabbed her stuff. Jasmyne grabbed her sleeping bag, attaching it to her bag and then putting her combat boots on. Once they were ready they started walking towards the closest town or city.
Once they finally got to a town, they split up to find supplies. Diane with Jasmyne and Major with Katlin. Alright I should’ve explained this at the beginning of the story but hey, that’s okay, basically a virus broke out. Dying patients were coming to life but they were different; they were slowly rotting and not in the right mind.
Jasmyne was coming home from the marines when it happened, she didn’t know anything about it at first until she came home to her little sister crying from her grandma being in the hospital because of a virus. They had gone to visit her, but when they got there the hospital was in chaos. Jasmyne tried getting out of there quickly but before she could her sister was bit by a nurse with rotting and decaying skin. They both screamed in horror, and she didn’t know what to do. Before she knew it her sister was gone. She ran out of the hospital as fast as she could not turning back, not even looking where she was going.
Major and Katlin were on the couch watching the Friday football game “who’s going to win?” Katlin asked curiously looking at her father.
“I don’t know kat, that’s why we’re watching it” Major said, not looking away from the television.
“Oh, alrighty” Katlin said, she was only six at the time when all this happened. The TV changed to the news.
“A virus has taken over the world, I repeat a deadly virus has broken out all arou- no, no!” the news reporter screams as a sickly looking human comes on screen taking a big chunk from her skin.
A few months later Major and Katlin are hovered over a cot with Natalie, Katlin’s mother and Major's wife, laying on it. She looked very pale and skinny, she hadn't eaten in weeks, she wanted her child and husband to eat, there wasn’t enough food for her though. She had died from starvation a few weeks before Katlin’s seventh birthday, after her death Katlin slowly stopped talking. She might say a word here or there but it was rare now.
Diane had been in the market place shopping for some fresh fruits, she had a whole bag just with apples in it. Her other bag had a variety of different fruits. She was walking home when she realized it was silent out on the street a little too quiet. She looked around, noticing there weren't any people out either. It looked like people's windows were being boarded up. She was very confused and ended up rushing home, putting her fruits away and turning on the news. She only saw the ending of the news reporter being bitten by…a zombie? She stared at the TV in shock not knowing if it was real or not. She wasn’t sure what to do. She was only supposed to be home for a week and then go back to school. What was she supposed to do now?
Eventually Diane met up with Major and Katlin then found out that she was immune to the zombie bites. They don’t know how or why, but they figured it would be smart to make it to some type of lab so they can figure it out. Somehow they got a hold of a science lab in Manhattan through a radio and made the plan to travel all the way there to make a cure from this hell. After a while of traveling they ran into Jasmyne and decided she would be a good addition to the group, since she can be both offense and defense.
