Until You Don't Need Me

Summary:

"When are you going to let me get out and live my fucking life, Shepherd?"

"Until you don't need me. Do you need me, Alex?"

Notes:

A new fic idea coming to life. I'm inspired after reading RowdyBoy's 'Alex Karev Finds a Home' series, and the ones inspired by it. This takes place after the shooting, Alex and Derek bonding after not getting cleared for work once they've been shot.

Fair warning, there will be emotional trauma, fluff, diapers, and everything else that comes with this kind of story. Lexie Grey is also going to wind up a little after not being cleared, with Mark looking after her. Richard is still chief, never Derek. Meredith gets cleared before Derek does.

Chapter 1: Miranda Bailey Had Five Interns. Had.

Chapter Text

Miranda Bailey had five interns. Usually, residents were only given four, but she’d had five of them. Five baby doctors to train, teach, and make sure they didn’t kill anyone.

There was Cristina Yang, who was already declaring cardiothoracic as her specialty a week into the program. She was hard, cold, unemotional, and a very smart woman. Already holding a PhD on top of her MD, she was about as smart as they come. Her bedside manner could use some attention, but she was a capable doctor.

Next came Izzie Stevens, the opposite of Cristina. Sometimes lacking in the ability to make sound decisions on the spot, Izzie was an emotional person who tended to get overly attached to her patients. Addison Montgomery had sought to break her out of it, but it hadn’t worked, and Izzie was often a well-liked doctor, unable to separate her personal feelings from her professional career.

And George O’Malley, how could Miranda Bailey forget about him? He struggled a lot during his intern year, failing to find a continuous footing. He was a great doctor at times, and then there were times when he just wasn’t, instead becoming timid and almost afraid to speak up. But man, when he did speak up he was an unstoppable force.

Then there was Meredith Grey. She was a legacy, being the amazing Ellis Grey’s daughter. But she was impulsive, reckless. Arguably dangerous. She took risks and the consequences had little effect on her, if at all. Miranda knew she’d had a rough life, and she wasn’t surprised, but she sometimes wished Grey would tone it down.

Finally, there was Alex Karev. He was the stray, the one whose resident gave him up after his first two days. Jerk, useless, douche, jackass. Those were only some of the words that were tacked on Alex right when he first started. Determined not to let anyone make a fool of him, yes. But often he went about it the wrong ways. And Miranda had tried to teach him, but some days he’d just act a damn fool.

Now they were all residents, all capable of making their own choices. And choices were made.

George had left to join the army and died after getting hit by a bus. It had destroyed Miranda who always had a soft spot for him, even naming her son after him. He was her favorite, and he was the underdog, the one she wanted to see win the fight and do the best. She was certain he would have too, he had that quiet drive that made him unstoppable, he just got caught up in too much of the drama sometimes.

Izzie was diagnosed with cancer and fought like hell, falling in love with Alex Karev along the way. But she’d left too, after being fired and quitting the program once before. She just left, not even giving Alex an indication that she was leaving. Miranda thought Alex would crack under the pressure, what with the Mercy West merger and his apparent separation. But Alex rose and began working with Arizona Robbins in pediatric surgery. Something it turned out he excelled at.

After having many cardio attendings leave, Cristina ended up settling into quite the friendship with Teddy Altman who had been brought in as a last resort by Cristina’s boyfriend and chief of trauma, Owen Hunt. Though she had grown considerably when it came to her emotions, Cristina was still a force to be reckoned with.

Meredith had been through the love life from hell as well, finally finding time to settle down and be Derek Shepherd’s wife, the current chief of neurosurgery and one of the top neurosurgeons in the country. She seemed to have a natural way with neuro too. Though it was only Alex, Cristina, and Meredith left, Miranda’s residents seemed to be doing well enough for themselves. They’d found their places, and everything was going well.

Or at least it felt that way. But everything could change, and so quickly too.

And the last thing the doctors of Seattle Grace Mercy West thought would happen was a mass shooting, but it did. A shooting that saw eleven people die, including the two new residents from Mercy West. Derek was shot, Owen was shot, and Alex was shot. Thanks to Mark and Cristina, Alex and Derek lived even though they were traumatized.

Now comes the fact that Derek and Alex are living together with Meredith and Meredith had been cleared for surgery again, meaning Derek and Alex are having a lot more time at home recovering. Alone but together.

Everything could change, and so quickly too.
