Long gone / How a Boy

Summary:

Two short angsty poems written from Paul McCartney’s perspective of his relationship with John Lennon.

Long gone: about how Paul wants nothing more than to be in John’s life forever, it can be interpreted as his feelings after the breakup, or 1980.

How a Boy: about the internalized Homophobia a boy would have in 1950/1960’s Britain. Where homosexuality is not only demonized but a crime. Internalized homophobia exists now and especially then. This poem is my interpretation of what I see as Paul’s “internalized homophobia”

Notes:

Two poems remember

Chapter Text

Long Gone

Stay

Stay with me

Until my heart gives in

Till my bones turn to dust

Until my eyes go blind

Till my brain forgets it all

Stay

Stay- for even if I forget

If my selfish mind forgets

At least I will have forgotten something worthwhile

At least I will be punished for ever forgetting

Oh but for now

For now I won't

For now I will cherish you

Cherish your soul till it shatters to nothingness

Oh but dear

It already has

Long ago

I am drifting

On and on

I need you

At least leave a piece of your soul

For me to kiss and love every morn

Without you

My life isn't a life

But a pot of constantly stirred water

Swirling and swirling until it evaporates into the ether

“Stay”

I cry this.

But you've been long gone

Long gone

Long gone
