Work Text:

Jingle, Jingle

Those are Dogdays keys to his apartment room. It was awful quiet, however he could make out the faint jazz music from next door.

Seriously..? He thought, growling to himself before lifting the keys to the key hole, wanting to go inside as quickly as he could and plop down on his mass of pillows.

(next to his kitten, but wouldn’t admit that)

He opened the door and walked inside, only to figure out Catnap (his roommate) wasn’t there to greet him.

odd.

“Catnap?” He called, getting slightly worried. Catnap was ALWAYS there to greet him, what if something went wrong? He shuffled uncomfortably, maybe he is in the bedroom?

Dogday sprinted to the bedroom, only to find beds made, presumably untouched. He was getting more worried by the second. Next was the kitchen, he remembered Catnap loved snacking on Colby jack cheese. After bolting to the kitchen, he looked around, only to find everything clean and tidy.

Something is up.

While out on a walk, Dogday the friendly dog spotted a feline hunched over against a tree trunk. Excitedly, Dogday approached the feline and introduced himself with a big smile. The feline responded in sign language and smiled slightly, indicating that he was pleased to meet Dogday. Dogday expressed his delight at meeting Catnap and proposed that they become best friends forever. He took Catnap's hand and pulled him upward, while the feline looked at him with a mix of surprise and happiness. Although Catnap was unable to express his joy in words, his expression and body language told Dogday everything he needed to know. After a short pause, Catnap asked Dogday in sign language if they could really be best friends forever. Dogday responded with a big smile and a firm..

"Forever!"

Dogday remembered how he and catnap first met, smiling at the memory. He then shook his head to re-focus on trying to find catnap. His catnap. He rummaged through the pantry, pleading silently that catnap would be here somewhere, his tears threatening to spill. He dashed out of the pantry towards the laundry room.

“I guess this is where we live now!” Dogday smiled, pulling Catnap into the apartment. Both looked around, clearly dazed. Catnap peered at the laundry basket in the corner of the (somewhat) living area of the apartment. He walked towards it, stepping carefully inside and bundling up inside of it. Dogday, watching this, looked adored. “Awe! You’re so cute Catnap!” He squealed, still staring at Catnap in the basket. “No I’m no-"

The memory hushed to a stop as shuffling could be heard from somewhere in the apartment. Despite Dogday having incredible hearing, he couldn’t make out where the shuffling came from. Maybe it’s my imagination? He thought, surely convinced.

He continued looking around, leaving one place un-searched. Why would he be in the janitors closet..?

He walked closer cautiously, creeping closer to the closet. His eye were fixated on the knob to the closet, he quickly opened the closet only to find...

“Catnap what in dogs name are you doing!” Dogday yelled, tears spilling out of his eyes. Catnap stood like a deer in the headlights, holding a box knife against his arms. There were scars all over his fore arms and some on his thighs. Dogday held his hands up, covering his muzzle as he looked Catnap up and down, in shock. “W-why are you hurting yourself?” He asked gently, approaching the cat slowly. Catnap just set the knife down and looked at Dogday, his eyes glossed with fresh tears. Dogday then ran to Catnap engulfing him in a hug. “I’m sorry for being such a terrible friend!” He wailed. Catnap just sat there, patting his friends back. It took Dogday a minute before realizing Catnap was also  frail, looking as if he hadn’t ate in a month. Dogday just hugged him tighter, not wanting to let him go. He was scared if he did, he would never come back.

“...I love you, Catnap.” Dogday said before burying his muzzle into catnaps scruff.

Dogday gasped. There lie catnap, covered in blood, eyes staring blankly at the door to the closet. It took Dogday a moment to process what was going on.

“...Dogday?” Catnap barely got out, his voice was rasp as he hadn’t talked for awhile. His gaze shifted slowly to the canine, staring at the feline in fetal position.

As soon as it kicked in, Dogday burst in tears, choking out broken sobs as he rushed to his friend, hugging him like his life depended on it. Bunches of “I’m sorry's” broke out. He settled catnap in his lap gently, cradling his bestest friend.

“I’m s-sorry! I should’v-ve been here an hour ago-o... but I wasn’t! And now you’re hur-rt, and it’s all bec-cause of me!” Dogday sobbed, holding his best friend in his arms.

Catnap didn’t do anything but stare at dogday, slowly fading.

“...I-I love you too... Dogday."

Catnap slowly lifted his mits up to dogs face and cupped it.

“I always have."
