Chapter Text
The first time that Yoongi met Jimin it was the night of the Farmer’s Moon.
It was the tradition of Haeseom. All of the packs on the island were to come together throughout the year to give thanks to the spirits of their ancestors who were now with the Sun and the Moon.
There were several occasions that they were expected to do this at: First Lunar Moon, Farmer’s Moon, Summer Solstice, Harvest’s Moon, and finally the Winter Solstice.
Yoongi can’t say he is particularly fond of any of the celebrations.
However, he whether he liked them or not, didn’t matter. Being the alpha son of the pack’s Chief Advisor, participating in them was an obligation that came with his title.
He was expected to stand tall with his chest puffed out with pride that he had the privilege to wear the stitch symbol of Yusan into his maroon and yellow hanbok. He was to keep his chin up with confidence of his status, in case any elders or other leaders of Council were to greet or converse with him.
He was not only representing his father, but Yusan as a whole.
“—And these poor pups could barely waddle without tripping over their own two feet. I told their mother to focus on walking first and then I can work on training them. It was the cutest thing—Are you even listening to me?”
The question snaps him back into reality.
Ah, right.
He is here sitting in front of the crackling bonfire, sharing a platter of nuts and berries with a disgruntled Hoseok looking over at him.
Yoongi waves his hand nonchalantly before grabbing a handful of berries. “I’m listening. Waddling pups.”
Hoseok tuts his tongue at Yoongi’s inattentiveness. “Twins, hyung. Waddling twins!”
“Waddling twins, yes. You had quite the exciting day.” Yoongi replies, throwing the berries into his mouth and then outstretches his hands to keep warm by the fire.
Despite being a celebration for spring, the air is still extremely chill this evening and it was only getting cooler with the sun slowly setting in the distance.
“You don’t understand how much strength it took me to not pick up them and nuzzle them, hyung.” The beta cries out to him.
“Knowing you, I’m surprised you were able to resist in the first place.” Yoongi snorts.
Hoseok slaps his arm in protest, but his grin on his face betrays him. “Not my fault, pups have always been my weakness.”
Yoongi smiles back, but then it quickly fades when he spots Namjoon approaching them. He clears his throat and straightens up his posture, feeling Hoseok do the same next to him.
Before Namjoon is able to reach them, Yoongi thanks the stars that their Chief and Namjoon’s own father, ends up pulling him away to introduce him to another elder from the Igwang pack.
Yoongi doesn’t know if he can consider Namjoon a friend or not. Their relationship has always been complicated. He likes Namjoon, but he can’t say that his trusts him. Not in the same way that he is able to trust Hoseok.
As Namjoon is the successor of their pack Chief, Yoongi ends up spending a lot of time with him in the Council and pack meetings. They are both cordial and respectful of each other, making small talk here and there when together, but they don’t make an effort to spend time together outside of the Council Chambers or formal occasions like today.
Yoongi can’t help but wonder what will happen when both of their fathers’ pass and Yoongi inherits his role as Namjoon’s right hand man. The Chief and The Chief Advisor have to get along with the wellbeing of the pack, and he doesn’t know if they will be able to do without when they barely know each other to begin.
Yoongi rubs his eyes, as he always does when he thinks about the ahead years to come.
And then he regrets it immediately because he knows that Hoseok caught it.
“You okay?” Hoseok asks, his voice in a much quiet hushed tone compared to before.
It always gets quiet when they get on this topic.
“I’m alright.” Yoongi replies with thickly, “Just the smoke in my eyes.”
“You’ve been sleeping better since you started drinking tea with your evening meal?” Hoseok asks, worry creasing on his face.
Yoongi has the hold back the urge to wince when Hoseok says that. Instead he shrugs casually, “I think it’s helping a bit.”
It’s not.
But, Yoongi doesn’t want Hoseok to worry over him and his sleeping habits anymore.
For the past six months, he hasn’t been sleeping well. He can’t place his finger on what changed. He finds that every time he closes his eyes, he feels haunted— haunted of both his past and of his future.
“Please, promise me that you’ll talk to Herbalist Kim, if you need anything else.” Hoseok urges with softened eyes. “He is there to help you, hyung.”
“I promise.”
He sends Yoongi a look and Yoongi can tell that Hoseok knows that he isn’t being truthful.
But to Yoongi’s relief, before either of them can say another word they are interrupted by the sound of the bell ringing to alert all of the attendees of the celebration.
The chatter of different pack members mingling around them quietly die down, as an elder alpha stands peered further behind the beta bell-caller at the altar of the shrine to the left of the fire. Yoongi recognizes him, as he is the abdicated Chief of Ilgwang.
With shaky legs he steps forward and clears his throat to announce the call of worship to their ancestors’ shrine.
It was customary at all celebrations to honour and give fruits to their ancestors to bring them good fortune for the upcoming seasons. It was extremely important for both the Farmer’s Moon and the Harvest’ Moon, as they were the cropping seasons.
But Yoongi can’t say for certain that he believes it’s true.
Several years ago, there was a massive famine that a toll on all of Haeseom but on an extreme toll on Yoongi’s pack. Unfortunately, the Yusan pack was extremely isolated from the other packs of the island.
Due to the geography of the island, Yusan is located between a mixture of both forests and mountains, separated from most of the other packs on Haeseom. Thus, during the famine, Yusan was the most affected and lost a third of its’ pack members due to the lack of resources and accessibility. Most of the victims being omegas.
One of them being his very own mother.
Yoongi can’t remember much of the famine, he was just a pup when it occurred. But, he does remember his mother passing and he is well aware of the aftermath of it all. Yusan wasn’t perfect but both their Chief and his father did their best to protect and nurture their members. Even after they both lost their omega mates.
As Yusan struggled to rebuild and were suffering, the other packs of the islands became to work out trading agreements amongst each other. This allowed for more supplies to become available, which eventually led to the increase trading in the markets on the island. All this together enabled the other packs to advance and improve their territories.
But once again, Yusan was at a disadvantage. They weren’t able to trade at the markets as freely as the other packs. Due how small their pack had become, they didn’t have enough pack members to take carriage to the markets to sell every day. Their pack members were only able to go every Jupiter Day.
Along with that Yusan was also only able to trade and sell furniture and craft goods. They were too far away to sell meats or fruits, as they would surely rot under the blazing sun before they would make it to the markets.
“Brothers and sisters, on behalf of all of current Council of Haeseom, I would like to thank you for gathering with us here today. As the season turns and our land prepare for its rich season, it is essential that we stand here today and honour the spirits of our ancestors who have both worked and watched over us through countless farming seasons.”
With a shaky arm, the elder alpha gestures to the large shrine to the right of the bonfire designated to leave offerings at for their ancestors.
The shrine is a large wooden platform with two levels. It was sheltered by white fabrics that were helped up by wooden pillar over top of the platform. The second level was split off into two sections.
“As you offer the fruits, remember the importance of our unity here today. Speak your thanks to those who paved the way for us to exist here on this very day. Share your hopes for the prosperity of our beautiful shared home.” The elder’s voice tremors as he continues, “I would like to invite all of our of alphas and omegas to come up and present their offerings first.”
As expected.
Yoongi had been to enough festivals throughout his life to know how this works. They are to line up in pairs. One alpha, one omega. They are to take the fruit from the side platters at the front of the altar and offer them to their ancestors in hopes of good fortune.
According to the tradition of their ancestors, it was believed that after they passed away, the alphas would go to be with the Sun, the omegas to be with the Moon, and the betas to be scattered amongst the Stars.
After the alphas and omegas give their offerings together to the second level of the shrine, the betas then give their offerings to the first level.
He bows more politely than he normally would to Hoseok as he stands to leave and to take his place in line. It is more for show in front of the elders and leaders than it is for formality.
Yoongi isn't particularly close with anyone else in their pack. He chats with some of them, but he wouldn't say they are friends. He really didn't have the time outside of the Council to grow to anyone besides Hoseok. He only had the time to see Hoseok, because Hoseok was his Trainer and they have sessions together twice a week.
Without Hoseok, Yoongi thinks, he would be incredibly lonely.
When takes his place in line, he ends up next to an omega from the Enjel pack, as noted by the small symbol on his chest of a seafoam green hanbok. But if that wasn’t enough to give it away, the scent that he carried smelt of sweet coconuts, indicating that he was from a packborn near the ocean.
The omega’s own thick black hair is resting against his shoulders and Yoongi thinks it’s of an informal style to be sporting tonight. It was custom for them to tie their hair when they were to make offerings to their ancestors, Yoongi’s own long hair tied is tucked away into a knot at the top of his head.
Their eyes meet and out of courtesy Yoongi sends the omega a small smile but, the Enjelan omega doesn’t acknowledge it.
He is fine with that. Most alphas would probably be offended but, Yoongi isn’t. He really isn’t in the mood to make friends, anyways. He turns and keeps his vision straight ahead, slowly moving closer to the front of the line, as each pair give their offering.
A daeguem is always played by an elder during the offering ritual, as if to make the entire ordeal less awkward from the sound of shuffling feet and movement of clothing as they were to bow at the altar and give their offerings. Everyone else in line were to be silent until their offerings were complete.
It had to be silent in order for everyone to be able to pray to their ancestors.
But with that, it also made the entire process quick. They are all familiar with how offerings work. They were to grab the fruit off of the trays at the front of the altar and kneel in front of the shrine on the first level of the wooden platform and say a quick blessing to their ancestors before giving the fruit to them.
There are sayings that the fruit their ancestors seek would speak to them, but Yoongi has never experienced that. As he approached the platters to his left side, he always tried to listen if his mom were asking for anything in particular, even if he couldn’t give to her directly due to his status, he would always try regardless.
Yet, he finds once again, that nothing comes to mind. He ends up picking up a banana in his left hand and some grapes in his right.
As per the ritual, he and the Enjelan omega bow towards each other before they turn to approach the shrine.
Simultaneously, they both kneel in front of the altar, placing their fruit on the shrine in front of them. Yoongi of the left side for the Sun, the Enjelan omega on the right for the Moon. Then, they are to bow their heads and offer their prayers.
He closes his eyes with his hands clasped on his lap, imagining what a bountiful farming season would look like and how it would benefit all of Haeseom.
Yoongi doesn’t know if he prays right. He’s always doubted it since the famine.
It was his first year praying after presenting his status. And he prayed to every ancestors amongst the Sun that his pack would be safe from the drought.
And their spirits still took his mother from him.
“Blessings to the Sun from Yoongi, alpha of Yusan.”
“Blessings to the Moon from Jimin, omega of Enjel.”
The Council leaders to the left side of the altar say in unison as him and the Enjelan omega raise their heads to the shrine.
Yoongi rises from his knees and places the fruits in his hands onto the altar. As he goes to stand, Yoongi watches from the corner of his eyes as the Enjelan omega slipping his tangerine offering into the right sleeve of his hanbok instead of placing it on the altar, but he does place the fruits in his left hand down.
Bewildered, Yoongi stares at him with wide eyes. The Enjelan omega just stares at Yoongi with a blank face, but Yoongi can smell that his sweetened scent now was curling with burnt odour.
With his left hand, the Enjelan omega signals for Yoongi to move forward to the left of the altar so the next pair can do their offering.
Despite his instinct, Yoongi knows that he can’t make a scene about this, especially not in front of the elders and Council.
Stealing an offering in front of all the island’s Council and elders was an extremely bold and unconventional move for one to do.
Despite the cold air around them, Yoongi feels sweat pickling at the back of his neck. He does as the Enjelan omega gestures and turns to walk forward towards the group of alphas to the left side of the altar, his hands clasped in front of him for formalities.
He doesn’t think has to worry, as long no one else noticed.
Yoongi knows that he wouldn’t get in trouble for what the omega did. However, if it were found out that he did know and yet didn’t say anything, it would be deemed that he did the act by proxy.
Amongst the crowd, Yoongi spots Namjoon near the back. He greets him with a bow, as he is higher status than Yoongi in their pack.
“To the spirits.” Namjoon greets him under his breath, while looking straight ahead at the pairs at the altar.
“To the spirits.” Yoongi repeats back to him, quietly. He studies Namjoon’s demeanor for a moment before deciding to ask, “Do you recognize that omega I was with?” Yoongi whispers to Namjoon.
Namjoon subtly moves his chin and eyes to follow the omega, who is now making a beeline to the more wooded area of the grounds.
He slowly shifts back to look at Yoongi. “No. I don’t believe so. For what reason do you ask?”
Yoongi hums deeply. “Wasn’t sure if he was the heir of Enjel or not.”
Yoongi knew he wasn’t the heir of Enjel, as the heir was a female beta. But, if anyone watching were to have noticed that the Enjelan omega had not sacrificed his offering, it definitely would have been Namjoon.
It was a good excuse, as Enjel elected their pack leaders instead of inheriting the title by blood, so Yoongi had never met the heir in a Council setting.
And if Namjoon didn’t say anything about it, then Yoongi’s inner alpha could rest.
Namjoon shakes his head. “The heir of Enjel is Choi Cheonsa, a beta.”
“Ah, yes.” Yoongi says, “I was mistaken, thank you for clarifying.” He bows his head for his ‘mistake’.
Namjoon nods in return before turning his attention back to the current of the pair at the shrine. Yoongi looks at the other pack members surrounding him; no one was looking at him, expectantly or suspicious, thus, it was safe for him to assume that no one else had noticed either.
After a moment, when he thinks enough time had pass. Yoongi widens his nose to track the scent trail of fresh coconuts, knowing that Namjoon was too absorbed in the ceremony to notice or care that Yoongi had left his side.
The fresh scent of coconuts becomes thicker as he follows the trail further into a secluded area of the grounds where the trees become denser
Yoongi tries to rack his brain of all the possibilities for the behind the omega’s reasoning to steal the fruit. An act of rebellion was the most logical answer, but even that doesn’t make total sense. Wouldn’t the omega want to be caught then? Wouldn’t he purposely cause a scene instead of sneaking off into the woods behind the ceremony?
Yoongi’s eyes widen once he spots the omega again.
He was in in small clearing of the forest. The Enjelan omega—Jimin—was now sitting on a small tree stump and receiving a hug from a small pup. When the pup pulls aways Yoongi spots with the stolen offering in his hand.
It is when the young pup runs pass Yoongi back to the festival, that they make eye contact and neither of them are able to say anything for a moment. The small smile that Jimin had previously as he watched the pup run off drops immediately when he catches sight of Yoongi.
“You’re not going to rat on me, are you? Jimin asks.
It is partially jokingly and partially defensive. Yoongi can’t blame him for that.
“You haven’t given me a reason to.” Yoongi says, blandly.
“I know you saw me. And now you’re here.” Jimin points out, he crosses his arms expectantly, as if he was waiting for Yoongi to come here and to drag him off to the elders.
“I was merely curious.” Yoongi answers, keeping his tone neutral for the omega. “And now my questions have been answered.”
“Have they now?” Jimin asks, his eyes harden. Despite Jimin being an omega, Yoongi is surprised how he holds his gaze to Yoongi, refusing to back down to an alpha.
“You were just feeding a pup.” Yoongi says. “I don’t think that calls for any further action.”
Jimin’s guarded demeanor slightly drops at that, his crossed arms loosening to his sides.
“His mom passed away a few weeks ago. Pneumonia. And he hasn’t been eating much," Jimin explains with a sad expression. “Figured it was the least I could do for him.”
Yoongi’s gaze softens at that. He couldn’t have been older than four or five and was now an orphan.
It hits a little too close to home for him.
“My deepest condolences to your pack for your loss.” Yoongi replies sincerely, bowing deeply to Jimin for the loss.
When he rises, Jimin is looking at him with a careful look on his face, like he still doesn’t fully trust Yoongi.
Again, Yoongi can’t say that he blames him.
“You did right by that pup.” Yoongi adds on, when Jimin doesn’t say anything else. He just keeps staring at him, with a slight tilt to his head.
Yoongi wishes that he had someone look out for him that way when his mother passed. Instead, he had been expected to pick up more roles and responsibilities to assist with his mourning father. He doesn't hold that against his father or his pack leaders, it was the reality of living in Yusan.
Jimin’s guarded gaze shifts to curiosity at that. “You truly believe so?”
“Of course. He is grieving. You reminded him that someone is looking out for him.” Yoongi answers.
“That is true and my belief, as well.” Jimin says, pausing before he continues, “However, I am surprised to hear this coming from a Yusan alpha.” Jimin says, pointing his chin to the symbol stitched onto Yoongi’s maroon and yellow hanbok.
Yoongi frowns. He looks down at the symbol on over his chest and then looks back at Jimin to meet his gaze. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Surely, you know. Your pack is well known for its traditions. All about respecting hierarchy and our ancestors’ rituals.” Yoongi’s brow creases. “Thus, an omega stealing an offering—especially when asking for a blessing for our crops, is extremely taboo, to say the least.” Jimin points out.
The Enjelan omega isn’t wrong.
Yoongi makes a noise in agreement. “It is extremely disrespectful and what many believe would bring misfortune to all, yes.” Yoongi admits truthfully, because it what they are taught as pups. “However, you still risked it during a festival in front of pack leaders and elders—”
Jimin hums at that.
“—So I assumed there had to be a good reason behind it, which there was.” Yoongi says, a bit satisfied with the look Jimin is now giving him. “Not as ancestral as you might believe.”
“Dunno about that.” Jimin says. He looks up at him, with what Yoongi thinks is a teasing grin. His tongue peaking out the side of his mouth. “I heard you guys still hunt for your food with bows and arrows.”
Yoongi nods solemnly, because that is true. “We do. But only after the summer solstice when the deer move south.”
“Even with the markets booming right now?” Jimin frowns in confusion.
“It’s more economical for us to hunt than to send a carriage to the markets.”
“I suppose that has some logical to it.” Jimin agrees thoughtfully, “So, that means you were taught to hunt?”
Yoongi nods, proudly. “Of course. All alphas in Yusan are all taught archery once we grow out of our pup-years.”
“Just alphas?” Jimin rolls his eyes and tuts his tongue, “What a shame. I’ve always wanted to hunt.”
“If an omega wanted to learn, they could.” Yoongi says, furrowing his brows.
Some of the omegas in their pack to know to hunt; it’s just wasn’t expected of them as it was for alphas. After the famine, the role of Hunter moved to all alphas, so that the remaining omegas weren’t at risk in the forest.
Jimin perks up immediately upon hearing that. “So hypothetically, you would be able to teach me how to hunt.”
“Yes. I’m sure if you were ever invited to our territory, someone would be able to teach you.” Yoongi says, his brows furrowing again.
“Wait, really?” Jimin looks up at him.
“I don’t see why not.” Yoongi answers.
“Hm, okay. I’m holding that to you.” Jimin hums before standing from the stump. He looks up at Yoongi with suspicious eyes before asking again, “You promise you’re not going to say anything?”
There is a brief moment of silence.
Then Yoongi tilts his head and keeps a straight face as he replies, “Say anything about what?”
Of course Yoongi wouldn’t say anything. Regardless of Jimin’s reasoning for stealing the offering, he had no plans of exposing his act to the elders or pack leaders.
He watches as Jimin’s face breaks into a grin and Yoongi can’t help but mirror it back to him.
Jimin’s smile is a bit contagious, Yoongi thinks. His eyes crinkle into the corners of his rosy cheeks when he does, his entire face full of warmth.
“I am confident that I will see you again, Yoongi of Yusan.” Jimin says, giving Yoongi’s shoulders a solid pat, as he passes him, “To the spirits! Or whatever it is that we are supposed to say.”
“To the spirits.” Yoongi says as a farewell to the omega.
Jimin leaves with a grin on his face and takes the sweet scent of coconuts with him.
Yoongi of Yusan. Jimin had called him.
Not Alpha of Yusan.
Not Successor of Min Hajoon.
Just Yoongi of Yusan.
Yoongi quite likes that.
Jimin is quite different from what Yoongi was taught of omegas. Despite committing a major offence, he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind or stand up to an alpha. He also didn’t seen that much concerned with the traditions that they were taught either. It piqued Yoongi’s interest and left him curious about the Enjelan omega.
It snows the following week.
Although, it is light flakes that melt before they hit the ground, the earth below is still too frozen for any planting or farming to begin.
Yoongi can’t help but find it ironic.
He doesn’t expect to see Jimin again so soon. In all honestly, he didn’t expect to the omega ever again.
Though, in hindsight, he supposes he should have figured that he would be around. After all, it was his pack’s territory.
Today is the first Council meeting since the Winter Solstice—an important meeting that takes place between the pack leaders after every festival, with the exception of the Lunar Moon to allow downtime during the winter months.
There are legends that long ago, Haeseom was in complete chaos. At the time, there was only four main packs at the time: Dalji, Enjel, Ilgwang, and Yusan. They were all in total conflict. Each trying to take over more territory of other packs which led to more bloodshed for several generations. As the population of all the packs decreased significantly from all the violence, their ancestors created a treaty between all the packs that there would be no more fighting and to only peace bring onto their shared land.
After the treaties were created and there was finally peace amongst Haeseom. But then shortly after that, came the split of the Dalji pack. Due to internal pack conflicts with the pack's Chief, several members left and created a new pack called Jayeon that was located between the mountains and the sea.
Subsequently, it was added within their treaties a requirement of all the packs to have two leaders. A Chief and Chief Advisor, to ensure that one Chief does not have all the power over a single pack. In addition was the creation of the Council. It was made up of all the packs leaders upon Haeseom. They were to meet up throughout the year to ensure that treaties are being still held up and that all pack leaders have no concerns for the betterment their own packs and Haeseom, as a whole.
As all of the pack leaders gathered around the territory marker of Enjel, Yoongi takes a moment to take note all of them. He is well acquainted with most of them, with the exception of the new Chief and Chief Advisor of the Ilgwang pack. They were recently elected to regent the pack as both elders stepped down after the previous Harvest’s Moon. Yoongi always found it interesting that some packs elected leaders instead of passing the succession down through bloodline. Though, he supposes it could be beneficial in some ways.
The Enjelan leader Choi Nari, an alpha that was also elected and has led Enjel for as long as Yoongi could remember, suddenly emerges from the trees of the forest to greet all of the leaders.
She is wearing a hanbok that was a similar colour to the one that Jimin was wearing at the night of the Farmer’s Moon. With the exception of the gold accents on the sleeves and trim of the white collar, marking her as the Chief.
Though she is short, both her face and overall demeanour convey the authority she has. It immediately silences all the hushed conversations at once, as she arrives at the other end of the territory marker.
“Welcome, leaders and Council members.” Nari greets them, her voice carrying over them, “I believe we have all met at least once. But in case we haven’t, My name is Nari.” She gestures to the beta shadowing at her side, “This my Chief Advisor, Hyo.”
“Thank you for the invitation to your territory.” The pack leaders chorus in unison, all bowing to both greet their host and request to step into the Enjel territory. Right after all advisors and then other members bow in unison as well.
There is only one other successor who present besides Yoongi and Namjoon—she is Dalji Chief’s alpha daughter, who is a quite a few years older than Yoongi, but the elder Dalji Chief had yet to step down from his role.
Nari and Hyo both bow back deeply, now that their visitors have done so.
“Thank you for agreeing to meet on such a beautiful Spring morning—Blessings of the sun to you all. Please enter.” Narai instructs with a gentle gesture of her hand to invite them in.
It isn’t a secret that Enjel is an affluence pack.
A visitor could tell just by the updated structure and maintenance of their buildings that they clearly had the funds for the upkeep. All of their buildings had wooden decks with covered wooden roofs that lead to the main structure that was made of both a mix of wood and clay.
Enjel was one of two port packs on the island, allowing them to trade with the mainlands and sell goods and spices that were not found on the island. With the expansion of both the markets and their population in recent years, they were doing quite well in comparison to the other packs on Haeseom.
Their wealth becomes even more apparent when they all enter the Council Chambers. The scent of freshly cut cedar fills all of their noses as they all enter and see the modern framework of the newly remodelled building, the ceiling mainly was revamped to allow a skylight over the hosting area.
The Council Chambers was similar to other ones, just more updated. At the far back of the room, there was a platform covered in seafoam green velvet for the host leaders to sit over the visitors. Mirroring the platform was a U-shaped white cushion seating on the floor in front of it with small tables.
“My apologies for the odour. We wanted to have the renovation complete well in advance of today, but that brutal storm at before the Lunar Moon caused a major delay.” Nari explains as she takes her spot at the top of the raised velvet platform.
Yusan wasn’t poor. But they weren’t lavish either. Their buildings still just simple wooden structures with wooden porches. They didn’t have the resources or finances to be able to do upgrades on all of their buildings, but their current structures worked for them. Yoongi is certain that the pups of the pack would be none the wiser of their situation.
Yoongi takes his seat beside Namjoon, as he normally does. They both are to sit behind their fathers, as they aren’t technically involved with any of the Council proceedings. Yoongi was here for mere records-keeping and Namjoon was here to study and learn how to command within the council chambers.
It was important that all packs had their own scribes for their own records, usually it was done by the Chief Advisor, but in Yusan’s case, Yoongi is the one who scribes all meeting records. His father had a shaky right hand from his years of hunting during the famine, thus, it was Yoongi’s mother who use to scribe on his behalf, but once she passed Yoongi took over her role.
Once everyone is settled, Nari claps her hands together, gathering all of their attention to her at the back of the chamber.
Yoongi grabs his writing brush from his rolled parchment paper, dipping it in the jar of soot on the table provided by Enjel.
“I suppose we should call this meeting into order.” She announces, “At ten minutes after the fifthteenth hour.”
He tries to conceal his disgruntled feelings from his face, as he writes down both the date and time at the top of the paper.
Yoongi doesn’t enjoy scribing at most Council meetings.
But he definitely does not enjoy scribing today. Not at the first Council meeting of the year.
Their Chief, Jinyoung, always brings it up when the host Leader asks if there was any concerns that needed to be addressed for the coming summer season.
Finishing the road from Yusan to the markets.
The plans were in motion long before Yoongi was even born, before the markets were as essential as they were now. The packs all were in agreement that it was fair to give equal access for trading to construct a road that went through the mountains to give Yusan a quicker commute than having to go around them, which adding on an extra hour of travel by foot.
But then when the famine hit and the entire project halted while packs tried to focus on caring for their members, until they could recover.
But, even years after recovery, the construction hadn’t been touched.
And Yusan is still suffering, because of it and the other pack leaders are always reluctant to take action about it.
Particularly, the elder alpha, Dayhe, the Chief from the Dalji pack always buts heads with Jinyoung whenever the issue is brought up.
“I don’t see why it isn’t the responsible of other packs to build a road that doesn’t benefit us in the slightest.” He says pushes up his glasses to glare at Jinyoung, “If you want the road, then build it.”
“It would benefit you when Yusan could fairly trade in the markets along with everyone else.” Jinyoung resorts, he rises to his feet heated at the elder who should have resigned his title long ago.
As much as he knows that the argument will lead nowhere, as always, Yoongi does agree with Jinyoung. Yusan barely benefits from the markets without the road. Due to the travel time, they aren’t able to sell meats or fruits, so they have to resort to crafted goods to trade which take a lot of time to build and transport, especially with such a small pack now.
Thankfully, when the discussion was turning into more of an argument than a productive conversation, Hyo calls for a recess so they can all to take a few minutes to decompress.
Which is why Yoongi now finds himself here, on the pier of Enjel.
He enjoys the light breeze of the ocean and the soft cooing sounds of birds hunting for fish above him. Yoongi wishes that Yusan was closer to the ocean; he thinks he would find himself near it every day, if it was.
He closes his eyes allowing himself to the moment of feeling the warmth of the sun against his face while the gentle ocean breeze plays with his hair.
Amongst the salty sea air, his nose abruptly catches onto a familiar scent wafting through the air, the sweet scent of warm, comforting coconuts filling his nostrils.
He flicks his eyes open and sees the Enjelan omega from the Farmer's Moon walking towards him next to him with fishing rod and bucket in hand.
“Hey stranger!” Jimin shouts at him.
He looks just as he did on the night of the Farmer’s Moon. He is wearing a similar styled seafoam green shirt, that was short sleeved, most likely due to the warmer weather climate in Enjel. There were no formal pants this time though, just loose silk ones with a matching colour that blew in the breeze. Yoongi supposes this is the typical dress of Enjelans in day-to-day life outside of festivals.
Yoongi stands up with straight posture to greet him before bowing deeply to him. “Blessings of the sun, Jimin of Enjel.”
When he rises again Jimin sending a toothy grin at him, like he is amused at Yoongi. But then he also bows back to him respectfully.
“I thought I smelt you.” Jimin says with a smile when he rises, “What are you doing in Enjel?”
Yoongi picks up on two things.
First, Jimin does not say the formal island greeting back to him. Yoongi thinks he should be offended, but he isn’t. From his interaction with the omega at the Farmer’s Moon, it became clear that Jimin wasn’t very formal to begin with. But, Yoongi was okay with that.
The second thing he noticed is that Jimin says that he remembered his scent. Maybe Yoongi shouldn’t read much into it. Maybe Jimin just remembers his cedar scent which was typical of a Yusanian alpha.
“It is the first Council meeting of the season.” Yoongi explains.
“Sounds boring.” Jimin replies. His facing scrunches up with distaste before turning confused. “Wait. Why are you involved with a Council meeting?”
“I am just there to scribe the discussion for records.” Yoongi says with a sigh. “But you are correct. It is extremely boring. Especially when they are just arguing back and further and coming up with no solutions. But, I should be used to it by now, I suppose.”
Jimin frowns further with confusion. “Why would you be used to it?”
Yoongi frowns. Though, he guesses he shouldn’t be shocked that Jimin isn’t aware of his status within the pack. “My father is Chief Advisor, I’ve been scribing in courts for most of my life.”
“Chief Advisor.” Jimin repeats, blankly. Then his eyes widen, his eyebrows shoot up at that tidbit of information. “So then that makes you his successor?” Yoongi nods. “Wow. Okay. That explains a lot.”
It is Yoongi’s frown that deepens with confusion this time. “What does that explain exactly?”
Jimin’s lips look like they are struggling to curl into a smile, like he is in on some joke Yoongi doesn’t know about.
“Nothing… Just… You are extremely formal.” He settles on, his lips still struggling to stay in a straight line, “But I suppose that is how most of Yusan is.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Jimn says, his lips twisting in amusement and waves his hands dismissively. And he doesn’t give Yoongi a chance to. “By the way, you still haven’t invited me to Yusan to teach me how to hunt.”
Yoongi furrows his eyebrows at the accusation from the omega. “I don’t recall saying I would be teaching you.”
Jimin clicks his tongue. “I believe you did. And you got my hopes up for nothing.” Jimin sighs dramatically, “Very rude of you, Chief Advisor to-be.”
Yoongi ponders it for a moment. He should say no. He wants to say no. He currently has enough on his plate with his duties picking up now that the farming season is here.
But he finds he can’t for some reason.
Not with the way that the Enjelan omega’s brown eyes are shining at him. The way the sunlight hits against his skin, making it appear so beautifully golden in contrast to the sea green on his clothes.
And the soft comforting scent of coconuts filling his nose wasn’t doing Yoongi any favours either.
“I suppose I could set some time aside on Saturn Day after mid-day meal, if you are available.” Yoongi finally relents.
Jimin looks up at him, as if he was surprised that Yoongi had said yes to him. “Really?”
Yoongi nods, “If you’re able to make it. I have duties to attend to most days but I have some free—”
“Of course, I am able to make it.” Jimin gleams.
Yoongi nods. “Okay. Wear something light, it gets hot very quickly in the range.”
Suddenly, he hears the ringing a bell. He peers over with a squint towards the source of the sound and sees Hyo waving the bell on the outside landing of the Council Chambers.
Yoongi sighs.
“I have to return.” Yoongi says with an apologetic tone. “But Saturn Day. Come to the north marker of our territory. I will meet you there.”
The look of happiness on Jimin’s face was undeniable. “It’s a date. I’ll be there on the hour past noon.”
With a nod, Yoongi bows to Jimin as a farewell before returning back to the meeting he was dreading to scribe for.
He knows that he isn’t breaking any pack rules by inviting Jimin over to teach him how to hunt. Again, there was a time when omegas would learn how to hunt in Yusan, but it is much less common now.
It’s definitely out of the ordinary, especially for him, as the alpha of the Chief Advisor. But, he doesn’t think it will be seen as a big deal by anyone in Yusan.
When he takes his seat next to Namjoon again, Yoongi doesn’t miss the way that he sends him a slight glance.
But if Namjoon can smell Jimin’s scent on him, he doesn't say anything about it.
It makes Yoongi’s alpha preen with satisfaction that Namjoon might be able to smell the omega’s scent on him. He wasn’t sure why his alpha is reacting that way, but the thoughts do not fog his brain for too long, as Chief Nari calls for the meeting to recommence and he picks up his quill again.
Fortunately for Yoongi, the meeting doesn't end up running much longer.
But, unfortunately for Yusan, nothing is passed.
All the leaders agree to meet at Yusan one week later for a meeting regarding the road being built for Yusan. It is expected that the leaders of Yusan present a formal case for the road to be built.
Yoongi wants to say that today was completely pointless, but his alpha disagrees. It gleams that he was able to see Jimin again and he doesn’t know why.
Yoongi has another nightmare that night.
It’s always of the same thing.
Trying to save his mother.
He should know by now that he can’t, and there was nothing he could have done at the time to prevent her from dying. He was just a pup, but the guilt of it gnaws at him relentlessly.
He wakes up with all of his blankets drenched in his sweat. His entire den stinking of his bitter scent as it normally does when he has nightmares.
By the glow of the moon behind the clouds, Yoongi guesses that it is close to the fourth hour when he rises from his bed. He knows that sleep won’t return to him with his den smelling this way. He ends up at the river, washing out his sleeping fabrics to rid them of their stench, as he often times has to.
Despite his efforts, he doesn’t sleep the rest of the night.
Yoongi catches Jimin’s scent before he sees or hears him, as he waits at the north territory marker. The gentle breeze in the air today is blowing it from the west of the island.
Instinctively, he turns his head in the direction of the breeze, his eyes scanning the forested north-west path of the island that Jimin would likely have to take to reach Yusan.
And when he does see Jimin, he is shocked to see him on foot. Most people would take a horse or carriage to Yusan, especially coming from a port pack.
Yoongi also notices that Jimin is wearing a short-sleeved hanbok in a same light shade of seafoam silk, paired with the Enjelan symbol over his heart. The other thing that Yoongi notices is that his long hair is styled half up and half down, but he supposes it is likely to combat the midday heat.
It’s no secret that Jimin is attractive; Yoongi noticed that from the first day they met. But with the sunlight casting a golden glow over him, as he reaches the Yusan territory marker, he almost looked ethereal. And as their eyes mets, Yoongi feels something flutter from deep in his chest.
“Did you truly walk here all the way from Enjel?” He asks Jimin, with a mixture of amusement and surprise in his tone.
“Just a typical midday hike.“ Jimin responds with a grin, seeming unfazed by the long walk. When he reaches the borderline he immediately snaps into a deep bow to Yoongi. “Blessings of the sun, Yoongi of Yusan! Thank you for the invitation to your territory.”
“Please stand up, you don’t need to be so formal.” Yoongi insists, motioning for Jimin to rise from his bow.
Jimin’s effort to be more formal doesn’t go unnoticed. But be doesn’t want Jimin to feel that has to act like that to Yoongi simply because of where he is from, he wants Jimin to feel comfortable just being himself.
Jimin rises and is grinning when he does so. “Good. Because I don’t think I am not very good at it." But then his face turns usually serious when he adds, “But I do want to respect both you and your pack. It is my first invitation to Yusan, after all.”
“Please enter.” Yoongi recites, hoping it comes out more playful, than it does dry. As he speaks, he gestures for Jimin to to step past the territory marker, as it is the Haeseom custom.
Jimin gleams at him, when he steps pass the marker into Yusan.
Without another word, he pulls at a hand folded crafted bamboo fan hanging from the belt of his hanbok. “A gift for you. It isn’t much, but I figured it would be nice to have when our sun becomes unforgiving in the coming months.”
Yoongi’s gaze softens at the gift offered in Jimin’s hand. He is extremely touched by the gesture, Yoongi can’t think of the last time that someone had gifted him something.
“Thank you.” Yoongi accepts the fan into his hands. He opens it to reveal the off-green design - a delicate pattern of branches and white flowers blossoms painted throughout it. “It’s beautiful.”
“I got it from the markets. It made me think of you.” Jimin says.
Yoongi hums thoughtfully at that.
It very much reminded Yoongi of Jimin, the colour of the fan resembles the similar shade of the Enjelan seafoam green.
“That was extremely thoughtful of you.” Yoongi says, holding it to his chest to show his sincerity and thankfulness for the gift.
“I’m glad you think so.” Jimin huffs deeply. He pauses before he shifts back into his usual manner. “So, off to blow the heads off of woodland creatures, yes?”
Yoongi just shakes his head and looks down to hide his laugh from the other at his forwardness. He fastens the fan into the belt of his own hanbok, before pointing to the southward point of the Yusanian woods, “It is this way.”
The archery range is very clearly well used. While Yoongi wouldn’t say it was worn down per say, but it was evident by the faded and scarred targets on the haystacks that countless pack members have practiced here over the years.
When Yoongi returns with the bow and quiver from the supply shed to the left of the range, he finds Jimin standing at the wooden shooting line, wearing a slight pout on his lips.
“I thought we were gonna be at least hunting rabbits.” Jimin says.
Yoongi shakes his head, when he reaches him. The wood of the shooting line his sagging slightly under his weight. “You have to learn how to aim first. If you go into the forest shooting haphazardly, you could shoot an animal without killing it. It is within our laws that we must slain our food with as little pain as possible for the animal.”
“Ah, Yusan always so logical and moral.” Jimin sighs, “I suppose that is a good law to have.”
Yoongi nods firmly. Then he moves to he holds out the quiver in his hand to Jimin. “First’s thing first, you wear your quiver across your chest.”
Jimin takes the quiver and places the leather strap over his shoulder, patting it down when he says, “Quiver, check. What’s next?”
“An important rule to remember, “Yoongi says, “Never take a bow from your quiver until the range is announced as cleared. Not a big deal today, as it is just us, but if you were to be trained in a session, that would be a big offence.”
Jimin nods. He looks at the bow in Yoongi’s hand before looking back up at him, “Got it, so don't shoot you by accident.” He quips.
Yoongi sends him a look, then looks down the wooden bow in his hand, before looking back at Jimin again, jokingly hesitating at Jimin’s comment. Jimin just grins in return, in his typical fashion that Yoongi is slowly becoming accustomed to.
“You want to hold the bow like this with your left hand.” Yoongi demonstrates holding the bow at the center of the handle, allowing Jimin to note his position before moving his thumb to tuck on top, “You want to cradle it like this.” Yoongi explains and Jimin nods to show he understands.
“Do you mind?” Yoongi breaks his position to gesture at Jimin’s quiver.
“Not at all.” Jimin says, taking an arrow from it and handing it to him with the non-pointed end facing Yoongi to grab.
“The arrow goes into the nock here on the bowstring.” Yoongi shows him, before getting back into the position he left off in with the arrow armed in the bow now. “You’ll want to stand shoulder-width apart, toes facing the target. Keep one finger above and two under the arrow when you aim.” Yoongi says, lining himself up with the proper form he was taught. “You want your left arm out straight and your right hand to be just behind your chin when you fire.” He squints his left eye for precision, pausing for a moment. When he pulls back and he lets go, the arrow flings from the bow right into the centre of the bullseye of the haystack.
He can’t help it when his chest puffs up a bit at the perfect shot he made, alpha even more prideful when he notices that Jimin is staring at him with impressed eyes.
“Wow,” Jimin exclaims, “Can I try?”
“Of course, that’s why we are here.” Yoongi replies. His stance is still tall when he hands the bow over to Jimin.
Jimin eagerly mirrors Yoongi’s previous stance, then looks at him for approval. “Like this?”
Yoongi looks him over, making sure his feet are good distance apart, making sure that his thumb wrapped over top of his hand and then gives Jimin a firm nod.
Jimin smiles and then before he goes to grab an arrow, he stops himself and looks up at Yoongi. “All clear?”
Yoongi can't hold back the smile tugging at his lips. “Yes. All clear.”
Jimin takes him time to line the arrow into the nock. He practices putting his right arm back straight a few times to make sure he has the motion down.
And then he pouts at Yoongi, when it goes directly into the bark of the trees behind the targets.
“Make sure your right arm stays straight when you pull back.” Yoongi suggests gently. “It will keep the arrow straight.”
Jimin nods, taking Yoongi’s advice. When he is ready to shoot, he takes his time to careful look up his position to the haystack, his eyes determined, as he grabs another arrow from his quiver and places it into the bow, completely unfazed by his first attempt. He adjusts his stances, before taking a deep breath before shooting again.
And it goes into the bark of the trees again.
“Focus more on looking at the target than the arrow itself. Stare at where you want the arrow to go.” Yoongi advises this time.
They end up falling into this routine for the new several minutes. Jimin continues to practice while Yoongi giving pointers that will help him improve his aim and form. Seven arrows in, Jimin does start hitting the target, which is quite impressive for a beginner, Yoongi thinks.
Yoongi is quite enjoying spending time out in the range with Jimin, which surprises him. It feels nice to have the sun on his skin with the light spring breeze blowing the comforting scent of coconuts into his nose while he watches Jimin practice and gives pointers when needed.
Yoongi is also is a bit surprised how relaxed he is to be around Jimin. He is not normally one who can feel comfortable around strangers, but he finds that he feels very at ease with Jimin.
“Aren’t you going to join?” Jimin asks after practicing a bit, looking over at him.
“Do you want me to?” Yoongi asks, baffled.
“What fun is it for you to stand here and watch me?”
“Today is for you to learn.” Yoongi says, steadily. “Plus, I shouldn’t over-exert myself too much. I still have training at the fifthteenth hour.”
“Ah, training?” Jimin asks, his face lighting up at that for some reason, he lowers the bow in his hand and has his entire focus on Yoongi. “Pesky trainers are always pushing you to your limits, huh?”
Yoongi snorts at the comment. “They certainly do.”
Though, he lucked out with Hoseok. He is pretty lenient with Yoongi and their training sessions, due to the friendship they have formed, but he does also like to keep Yoongi on his toes from time-to-time.
“What do you train for?” Jimin asks, curiously.
“Arm-to-arm combat, mainly.” Yoongi answers, and Jimin raises an eyebrow at that. “A custom from when Haeseom was still in conflict.”
Maybe, it was seen as a little primitive that Yusan still trains for arm-to-arm combat. Yoongi is aware that most packs have shifted their focus on strength and stamina training, to lessen violence. From the documents of Yusan’s history, their Chief was fearful that even after Haeseom was in peace again, there was the possible that wild packs from the mainlands could easily attack Haeseom. It was written in Yusanian law that they would continue to learn arm-to-arm combat until they reached a peace treaty with the mainland packs. But, they still do not have one, so Yusan has continued to teach it.
“I honestly wasn’t aware that Yusan had arm-to-arm combat trainers at all, but I suppose that makes sense.” Jimin says, lightly. “Do you have specified trainers for each study?”
Yoongi nods, his gaze is looking past Jimin when he says, “We try to. There is a lack of educators right now due to the famine.” He explains thickly, flicking his eyes back to Jimin. “We have more pups than adults at the moment. So, most educators have a bit of knowledge of everything, because, well, they have to.” He explains.
He’s not upset by it—it’s just the fact of living in Yusan.
Jimin deflates upon hearing that. “Ah. That must have been difficult to deal with growing up.”
“I suppose it would be make it more difficult.” Yoongi replies, thoughtfully. “However, I wouldn’t know though.”
The bow in his hand immediately falls to his side upon hearing that. “Why not?” Jimin frowns.
“I told you.” Yoongi says, a puzzled look on his face. “I grew up in the Council. I didn’t receive the typical education pups do. Just training and alpha education once I presented.”
“You’ve been in the council your entire life?” Jimin asks, his eyebrows creasing with concern.
Yoongi nods deeply. “Practically since the famine ended.”
Jimin stares at Yoongi for a moment, his eyebrows lower and pull closer together. “That is an insane amount of pressure to put on a pup.”
“I suppose. But, I haven’t known anything different.” Yoongi shrugs, because it’s true. Maybe it was a lot of pressure at times, but there was nothing he could do to change his circumstances.
“Do you enjoy it at least? The Council?” Jimin asks, with softened curious eyes.
Yoongi ponders that for a moment. No one has ever asked him that before. He’s never really questioned it himself either. As he said, it’s all he ever known. All that he has ever been expected to do in his life.
“I think I do.” Yoongi replies, his voice is slightly strained. “Some days it can be a lot, but I don’t mind the routine of it all. If that makes sense.”
“It does.” Jimin gives him a small sad smile that doesn’t reach his eyes. He looks like he wants to say something else but he doesn’t. He simply turns his attention back to the haystacks and goes to grab another arrow from his quiver, places it in the bow, and aims again.
They don’t say anything again for a while. Yoongi quite likes the silence between them. It's comforting to be able to enjoy the silence with someone other than Hoseok.
Once Jimin is out of arrows, they both walk together the haystacks and collect the arrows back into Jimin’s quiver.
“What is your birth year?” Jimin asks him, breaking the silence, as they walk back to the shooting line.
“Year of the Rooster, why?” Yoongi asks, at a loss as to why Jimin would be wondering that.
Perhaps, to understand better how young he was when he began to follow his father along in the Council.
His face has a sheepish blush when he looks down at his feet with an embarrassed smile. “Ah. I should be a little more respectful to you then. I heard Yusan is particular about that stuff.” Jimin says, “I’m Year of the Pig.”
“What difference does our birth years make?” Yoongi laughs with a slight snort out of amusement at the omega’s concern. “I am the Chief Advisor’s successor and you still speak commonly to me.”
Jimin’s face flushes even redder upon hearing that. “My apologies. I wasn’t aware of that custom. We speak to everyone with the common tongue in Enjel regardless of status.”
Yoongi waves his hand to show he doesn’t mind it at all. “It’s fine. You don’t have to speak honorably to me. I enjoy the casualness for a change.”
“Hmm. Me too. I mean, I am used to casualness. But, I like it between us.” Jimin replies honestly, with a warm smile.
It makes Yoongi smile, too. He finds that a lot of Yusanians are hesitate to speak to him, like they are nervous of his status. Perhaps its also because Yoongi doesn’t make an effort to speak to a lot of people as well. But he likes the dynamic that him and Jimin have developed - being equals despite their statuses.
When Jimin gets in position again at the wooden platform again, sticking his tongue out to the side as he aims at the target.
And this time, he gets in the red outer circle around the bullseye.
The moment the arrow hits the target, Jimin looks over at Yoongi with a proud smile on his face. “Hm, I think I am starting to get the hang of this now.”
“I’ll believe it when you get a bullseye.” Yoongi replies, teasingly.
And maybe he shouldn’t. He should be careful about how taunting that could come across to an omega from an alpha. Jimin may think that he is talking down to him due to his status.
But that doesn’t happen.
Jimin just smirks back at the challenge, clearly not offended. He fixes his stance first, his feet shoulder width apart, the bow resting on his shoulder, his arm relaxed and not overextended—exactly how Yoongi showed him how to position himself.
Jimin closes his right eye and sticks his tongue again, as he pulls the bow back, at the last second he moves the arrow a degree down from its aim and then releases it.
Yoongi watches as the arrow flies across the range and the bullseye of the haystack exactly in the middle of the bullseye.
“Oh my spirits! I did it!” Jimin shouts happily, shooting his arms up in excitement, “I got a bullseye!”
Yoongi’s eyes widen at it. He can’t stop the smile on his smile. He is extremely impressed with how fast Jimin was able to learn. Certainly quicker than Yoongi himself was able to. “That was amazing. Your form was perfect that time. If you consistently do that every time, you will be trained in no time.”
Jimin grins at the praise. “Now can I shoot a rabbit?”
Yoongi shakes his head with a slight amused laugh at the omega’s eagerness. “Shoot four more in a row like that and perhaps, next time, we can hunt in the forest.”
“Next time, huh?” Jimin asks with a grin.
“Haeseom wasn’t formed in a day; it will take a lot of practice until you nail down proper form to be able to shoot wildlife.” Yoongi says.
“So after next time, I get to shoot a rabbit, is what I’m hearing.” Jimin wagers back.
“If you shoot four more bullseyes.”
“You mean when I shoot four more bullseyes.”
“In a row.” Yoongi adds on, without missing a beat.
They stare at each other with playful smiles at the banter and Yoongi is once again reminded how beautiful Jimin is. He has to remember to breathe through his mouth, as his eyes remain locked with Jimin’s.
Thankfully for Yoongi, Jimin is the one to break them from their spell.
He turns to look up at the sun, shielding his eyes with his free hand. “I suppose, we should end on a high note and I should head home soon.” Jimin says, with a sigh. “It’s easily close to the fifthteenth hour and I don’t want to make you late for your training. All combat is extremely important!”
Yoongi follows Jimin’s gaze to the sun, surprised at how much it’s moved since they first came out to the archery range. Had two hours truly passed already? It felt shorter and for some reason, Yoongi doesn’t want it to end. He quite enjoys how well him and Jimin get along.
Jimin helps him put their equipment back into the supply shed and it takes Yoongi bit by surprise—though he supposes, it shouldn’t. Jimin has been nothing but polite to him and seems more than willing to assist him even though, it’s just a few items.
Yoongi wants to chastise his alpha for how much he enjoys being in the confinement of supply shed with Jimin. Even if it is only for a brief moment, his instinct wants to greedily inhale his potent scent here without it getting lost in the breeze.
Jimin's true scent is very sweet and creamy. It smells just like a tropical day at the ocean. It overwhelms Yoongi and makes him dizzy.
“I really appreciate you taking the time to help me today. You didn’t have to.” Jimin says when Yoongi is locking the shed up behind them. “It’s only fair I return the favour to you.”
Yoongi’s instinct perks up at that. His alpha happy that Jimin wants to spend time with him, but Yoongi’s rational brain has to remind him that the omega is just being polite.
“I don’t require anything in return for teaching you.” Yoongi says, as they begin to walk back to the path that leads to the north marker of Yusan. “Plus, you already gave me a gift for my time.” Yoongi gestures to the folded fan attached to his belt.
“That wasn’t for teaching me.” Jimin says with a soft pout. Yoongi truly doesn’t know what other reason it would be for. “There has to something I can do for you in exchange.”
Yoongi thinks thoughtfully for a moment, pondering what he could ask of Jimin.
“I’m not sure if it’s in the same realm, but you always speak highly of the markets, I have yet to go.” Yoongi hums.
“You haven’t been to the markets?” Jimin brightens up beside him as they continue to walk in sync. “Oh, the markets are my favourite. I can definitely take you. When would you like to go?”
“I have duties all day tomorrow, but Moon Day is my typical rest day so I have no schedules that day.” Yoongi explains.
“Moon Day works. However, we should go early to beat the heat.” Jimin says thoughtfully, his eyes scrunching up for a moment before flattening out and finding Yoongi’s again, “What time would work best for you? I have schedules in the later afternoon, but I am available in the morning.”
“Let’s say, the half past the ninth hour?” Yoongi suggests.
He doesn’t want to wake too early, plus the commute to the markets will take him some time. He also doesn’t want to inconvenience Jimin if he has to return to Enjel for the afternoon.”
“That works. Moon Day, it is then. Get plenty of rest the evening before. It’s a lot of walking around.” Jimin advises.
“I will do my best.” Yoongi affirms. He doubt he will be able to, though.
“I’m sure you will.” Jimin smiles.
And Yoongi is really starting to become fond of that smile.
The way his lips curl upward and make eyes crinkle up into the tops of his rosy cheeks—it’s just a beautiful and infectious sight to look at it.
“I suppose this is where we part.” Jimin says when they approach the territory marker, separating Yusan from the neutral lands of Haeseom.
Yoong thinks that he sounds slightly somber compared to his usual demeanour.
Yoongi nods, also slightly deflated. “But Moon Day.”
Something deep down inside of him doesn’t want to say goodbye to Jimin yet.
“Moon Day.” Jimin affirms.
He looks at Yoongi, as if he wants to say something else, but instead he just shyly smiles at Yoongi and gives him a light wave of his hand before he turns to step over the territory marker and makes his way back to Enjel.
Yoongi watches him for a bit, his alpha wanting to be sure that he is safe as he takes the path back to Enjel until the foliage from the trees obscures his form from Yoongi.
But then Yoongi feels it.
The feeling of being stalked.
It claws at his alpha’s instinct.
Someone is watching him and Yoongi can detect that is coming from within the Yusan territory.
His eyes scan his surroundings, he widens his nose trying to detect any scents around him. His heart race and his muscle tense into a posturing stance at the potential threat.
“Who was that?” A sudden voice says.
Yoongi throws his hands out in front of him in self-defence, his alpha ready to take on any predator about to come his way.
But the predator in question turns out to be Hoseok popping his head around a tree.
Sometimes Yoongi really dislikes how stealth Hoseok can on his feet. The way that he can move around the forest without his scent giving him away. But, he supposes that is a perk that comes with his rank and role in the pack.
Hoseok does this often. He likes to test Yoongi’s instinct to make sure his alpha instinct is still up to par, despite not being his alpha trainer.
“That was Jimin." Yoongi explains, his body and instinct still recovering from being on high-alert. "He’s an omega from the Enjel pack.”
“Since when do you have friends outside of Yusan?” Hoseok teases with a light laugh, putting his arm around Yoongi’s shoulder, as he normally does when they walk together.
“I wouldn’t consider him a friend.” Yoongi says, “We met at the Farmer’s Moon. He wanted me to teach him archery. He was actually quite good for his first time.” Yoongi hums, thoughtfully.
He thinks back to when he was first learning how to shoot an arrow. It took him ages to learn how to aim without overextending his arm, but Jimin was able to grasp it within one training session.
Yoongi didn’t realize he was slightly smiling, until it suddenly drops at the suspicious looking grin on Hoseok’s face.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Yoongi frowns.
“You like him.” Hoseok says, with an amused toothy smile.
“What do you mean?” Yoongi asks.
Hoseok rolls his eyes playfully at Yoongi’s obliviousness.
“I mean, you’re smiling and your scent is glowing. I can’t recall a time you have ever smelt so happy. You like him.”
“He isn’t a bore to be around, I’ll say that much.” Yoongi settles for. Yoongi quite enjoyed his time with Jimin today. “He wants to take me to the markets on Moon Day.”
Hoseok just smiles when he replies. “You silly alpha.”
And Yoongi doesn’t have the energy to ask him why he says that.
Yoongi finds that he really can’t focus today.
He is sitting in the Yusan council chambers with Jinyoung, Namjoon, and his father.
With the other pack leaders from the Council to come over this Mars Day, they had to prepare their argument for finishing the road.
It’s a huge deal that they were able to get the rest of the Council to come over and hear a proposal to finish the road, in the first place. This is the furthest progress they have made since the famine and they were not willing to miss their chance.
Yoongi learns that Namjoon is actually quite good at writing when they brainstorm how to. It is clear to Yoongi that he has studied how to use persuasive language before, which isn’t surprising since he was expected to be the pack’s Chief one day.
After spending the morning coming up with their proposal, they think they have enough talking points to prove the benefits for Yusan to have better access to the markets. They would be able to expand their trade to meats and fruits instead of just crafted goods.
The rest of the day is quite boring, Yoongi thinks.
Later in the day, he ends up, scribing a discussion between Jinyoung and his father regarding a young alpha who was caught dominating an pup in their pack.
All his mind can focus on is that he gets to see Jimin again tomorrow. That can inhale his sweet scent again.
Normally, Yoongi dreads having any obligations on Moon Day. It’s the one day that he isn’t expected for anything by anyone.
But his alpha is overwhelmed with excitement that he gets to see Jimin again.
The first thing that Yoongi notices is that the market is huge.
There are two tall pillars that mark the front of the entrance, between them is a stone path that leads down a small hill to where the line of stalls are.
To the left of the entrance there is a covered stand, where patrons can buy to keep their horses to while they are in the markets. Yoongi was aware of this, due hearing that to the Yusan carriages were stored here on Jupiter Days.
Yoongi isn’t a fan of riding but there is no way he could have came to the markets otherwise, so he had to ride today. But he came to find he didn’t mind the solitude of riding through the forests. He found it quite peaceful to be alone within nature of the island. He is grateful that the sun wasn’t too brutal yet. It’s still early into the Spring season for it to be at its’ force full, but there more noticeable heat in the breeze around Yoongi.
The second thing Yoongi notices is how overwhelming the market is with so many scents around him. In populated spaces, no matter how good an alpha’s sense of smell is, it can be very difficult to distinguish so many different scents at once in a crowded place.
Until Yoongi smells one in particular.
One that he can differentiate from the rest of the crowd easily.
The one that he has grown very fond of the last couple of weeks.
When Jimin greets him, he has his typical beautiful smile on his face that Yoongi is starting to really adore as they spend more time together. Jimin walked here, because of course he did. But Yoongi isn’t surprised, the commute to the markets from Enjel isn’t nearly as long as the commute to Yusan.
Before they enter the market entrance of the markets, Jimin extends his arms towards him, silently inviting Yoongi to link his together.
He does see several other buyers linking arms, so he willingly links their arms together. Jimin explains to him its’ so they don’t get separated in the crowds.
Yoongi can’t ignore the flutter nerves from under his skin. It was the first time they are touching and close for a prolonged period of time. His alpha inside is very satisfied and happy at the feeling of the touch. Happy about the lingering scent of coconuts marking his skin.
The markets were surprisingly busy for such an early time of the morning. Bustling crowds lined the stalls, Yoongi overhears some of the patrons bargaining prices as they walk pass, while some young pups tugged at their parents’ sleeves, urging them to move to to the stalls filled with toys.
Yoongi finds it was a good idea for them to link arms, they end up have to lean close to together to squeeze through the build up of crowds.
“What are you interested in looking for? There’s so many options. Meats, fruits, silks, crafted goods, books, oh and tons of imported goods from the mainlands.” Jimin rattles off to him, as they walk through the market.
And Yoongi is a loss when he tries to pinpoint a particular item he would be sought after. His den is sparse, besides the essential bedding and a few books that he had borrowed from the Yusanian library.
He truly only had joined Jimin because he offered and he wanted to spend more time with the omega, not for what the market had to offer.
“So many options.” Yoongi hums at the list, “Why don’t you show me your favourite stalls?”
He would much rather prefer to learn more about Jimin and his preferences.
Jimin brightens up at the suggestion, “Of course.”
The first shop Jimin takes him to is a stationary shop. Jimin goes into detail to explain how the paper used in the books in the came from the mainland of mulberry bark and that due to the natural materials it was an overall stronger paper that the paper that was made of oak bark from the island.
Yoongi listens happily. He is rather intrigued to hear about the difference as someone who uses a lot of paper for record-keepings purposes. He has half a mind to purchase and truly see if there was a difference, but decides against it for now, but keeps it in mind for later.
The next shop one they go to, Jimin says is a personal favourite of his.
“Ah, Jimin, my favourite customer!" An older omega with deep wrinkles greets them with a respectful bow as they step until the makeshift roof of the stall. The omega’s eyes widen in surprise when she turns to Yoongi “Oh! And who is this?”
“Good morning Mina.” Jimin greets her warmly, “This is Yoongi of Yusan.”
Yoongi moves to bow to her due to her age and that they were a guest in her shop, but she stops him with waving dismissive hands, “No, no, no, please.” She then bows deeply to him first, “An alpha from Yusan, what an honour to meet you.”
Yoongi shifts a bit, feeling embarrassed. It shouldn’t be an honour to meet him, just because of his status and birthpack.
“Mina and her husband handcraft hand fans.” Jimin informs him with a nudge and knowing smile. Glancing down at the counter, Yoongi looks down at the counter and spots several folded fans that were all hand painted. He noticed that they looked similar to the one that Jimin had given to him, but before Yoongi has a chance to comment, Jimin says, “You handcraft them each day, isn’t that right?”
“Yes, yes. Each day, we create new designs.” Mina affirms to them proudly, “No fan is the same.”
Yoongi hums at that. He takes his time to look at the designs of each fans displayed, As he examines the delicate hand painted designs, the left corner of the display catches his attention. "And what are these?”" he inquires, pointing to a collection of small rings and bands nestled in the corner.
Mina's eyes light up with pride at the question. "Ah, those are our custom-crafted jewelry pieces.” She explains with a soft tone. “We create both rings and bands made of ginkgo bark from the the mainlands—quite rare.” Shea adds, lifting up the small ring into Yoongi’s hand. She turns and pulls another tray from under the counter. “We also commission rings too.” She explains, pulling out a wooden ring that was filled with golden jewels in the center, inviting Yoongi to take a closer look.
Yoongi gasps, as the jewel sparkle in the light. It’s extremely impressive that they were able to get seamless get a ring of resin with the jewel encasement between the bark.
"They're beautiful," he remarks sincerely, putting the jewelry back to her hand.
“These are mainly commissioned as courting gifts. But it isn’t uncommon for an individual to just want them for themselves.” Mina explains, “If you’re interested in these, allow me to show our ginkgo leaf pendants as well!” She says, her passion for work evident.
As they continue to allow Mina to show them more items in her stall, she explains to them, that they create new designs daily, because of how busy they in the summer months. She explains that her and her husband spend their evenings in their crafting up new designs for the following morning. Upon hearing this, Yoongi couldn’t resist from purchasing two red pendants from her. He bought one for him and one for Hoseok, the colour matching the maroon shade of Yusan. Though, Yoongi himself is not one to wear jewelry, it would feel improper of him to leave with purchasing anything. He wanted to support her for her talent and hard work, completely understanding as to why Jimin held her in such a high regard.
“Is she who made the fan you gifted me?” Yoongi asks in a hushed tone once they begin to exit her stall tent, their arms linked once again.
Jimin grins. “Of course. Why do you think I am her favourite customer?”
“It’s extremely impressive that she and her husband are able to both create jewelry and hand fans. There is so much detail within both of those tasks and yet she is able to commission them daily?” Yoongi comments, truly impressed of the talent of just two people running the shop.
“She is extremely talented, isn’t she?” Jimin agrees.
The sun is now high above them in the sky, forcing them to shield their eyes. Despite his best efforts, Yoongi couldn’t suppress the yawn that comes with it. The combination of walking, the lack of sleep, and heat makes it inevitable. He knows Jimin catches it when he feels him playfully slap his shoulder with his free hand.
“I thought I told you to get lots of rest.” Jimin playfully scolds him.
Yoongi knew this. And he truly tried to sleep, as he does every night but he woke up from yet another nightmare about the famine and his bed drenched in sweat and fear again.
“You did.” Yoongi says, straightening up, in an attempt to hide his exhaustion despite the fact that Jimin already noticed it, “It was just one of those nights I couldn’t find sleep.” He settles with, hoping to brush off any further concern.
He doesn’t need another person worrying about his sleeping habits.
“I hate those nights.” Jimin sympathizes with a gentle tone. “You gotta get out of bed and take apart your entire nest and then redo it.”.
Yoongi halts in his tracks. He isn’t sure as to why Jimin would be bringing that up to him. Yoongi is an alpha, after all.
“Nest?” Yoongi questions, his confusion evident with his raised eyebrow.
Jimin stops as well, due to their linked arms. He turns to look at widened confused eyes.
“Do you not nest?” Jimin asks and tilts his head, as if he was genuinely curious.
Yoongi shakes his head, his eyes squinting with confusion. “No. That is only for omegas.”
Jimin frowns at that. “No. That’s a misconception, Yoongi. Well, yes, omegas have been associated with nesting historically, anyone can and should nest.” Jimin corrects gently.
“Oh.” Yoongi murmurs, he feels his cheeks flush with embarrassment at his lack of knowledge. “I was never taught that.”
Jimin doesn’t seen offended, he just gives Yoongi an encouraging smile instead.“It is encouraged by our leader actually—you've met her. It’s really helped a lot of the betas and alphas in our pack.” Jimin explains gently.
“Apologies for my comment.” Yoongi says, bowing his head to show that he is truly sorry.
He was always told otherwise. It isn’t that he doesn’t trust Jimin’s word, but he the concept of an alpha or beta nesting is entirely foreign to him.
Jimin takes the lead for them to start walking again. With a gentle and patient eyes that ease Yoongi’s own discomfort, he adds, “I would recommend at least trying it.”
“I wouldn’t even know where to begin.” Yoongi snorts. Nesting isn’t discussed openly in Yusan. Not with alphas anyways, thus Yoongi isn’t well-acquainted with the logistics of nesting.
“I can help you if you would like.” Jimin offers, his voice soft.
Yoongi hesitates at that. His posture stiffens at the implications of the offer. He looks over at Jimin who is looking back at him. And now Jimin is the one who stops walking at Yoongi’s stiffness.
“Is that customary?” Yoongi asks, his brow furrowing.
“What do you mean?”
“It’s… It’s okay for an omega to teach an alpha how to nest?”
Jimin frowns in thought. “Of course it is. Why wouldn’t it be?”
“Just seems like…” Yoongi pauses, trying to articulate his thoughts without offending Jimin, “Isn’t it… kind of personal to the rank?”
“I suppose it can be.” Jimin acknowledges, “But we are friends, yes?”
“I’ve seen you more than I have seen Hoseok this past week, so, I suppose we are friends.” Yoongi quips humorously.
It does help lighten the mood and earns him a smile from Jimin.
“We could go look at some fabrics, if you would like.” He suggests instead. “We can skip the nesting, if it makes you uncomfortable. But new fabrics may help you sleep better on tough nights.”
Yoongi thinks for a moment, “I wouldn’t be against looking at new fabrics… Let me think about…” He trails off, feeling awkward.
“The nesting part?” Jimin fills in the gap for him.
“Yes. That.” Yoongi confirms.
Jimin gives him a small smile and gives a small nudge of his hip against Yoongi’s. “Like I said, no pressure, just an idea.”
Yoongi enjoys the markets seeing Jimin so happy and confident. Jimin points out various items, sharing tidbits of information about their origins and significance. Yoongi really enjoying hearing to Jimin talk and will listen happily as he tattles on about different backgrounds of items at the market. He is clearly very knowledgeable about a lot of the creation of several items.
They do end up looking for fabrics, the stall have samples of different types of fabrics for patrons to feel the the texture. He tests some silks, but most of his fabrics in his den were already silk, so the owner suggests that he tries velvet instead. He does like the plushness of the velvet and the sense of luxury that comes with it, but Yoongi can’t say he it too fond of the overall texture. He settles on purchasing a few rolls on cotton fabrics, preferring the earthy and lightweightness to them.
The last place Jimin takes him is a food stall. They had fruits lined on their shelves from the mainlands that Yoongi had never seen before. But, that wasn't the reason that Jimin brought him her. He insisted that Yoongi had to try the bingsu at this particular stall and that is the best way to end a warm day at the markets.
Yoongi allows Jimin to order for them, but Yoongi insists that he pays for them both, as a thank you for showing him around today. Though, Jimin argues with him to say that it was simply a favour in return for teaching him, with redden cheeks, Jimin allows Yoongi to pay for them both. Though, they don't need to keep their arms intertwined, as they are away from the crowds, they still do. Yoongi doesn't want to pull away, he quite enjoys the touch and the constant smell of coconut hitting his nostrils and it seems that Jimin doesn't want to either.
As they head to find a shaded seat, outside of the stall, Yoongi couldn’t resist the playful comment that slips from his mouth when they pass by one of the fruit stands. “Seems like a bad omen to be around fruit with you again."
Jimin tilts his head in confusion, before registering the comment. Then, his cheeks go completely red. “I would never steal from a stall.” He hisses to him in a hushed tone.
“Just from our ancestors who bless our crops.” Yoongi jokes with a grin. They finally do separate from their linked arms, as they settle on a table that was tented by a tarp connected to the food stall. They both exhaling sighs at the relief from the sun’s relentless heat, as they settle into their seats.
“Do you truly believe that?” Jimin asks, his tone a bit serious now, his eyes locking on Yoongi’s.
Yoongi frowns before he shakes his head in response. “No." He replies, "I don't believe that."
“Truly?” Jimin asks, his eyes a bit skeptical as they continue to search Yoongi’s.
Once again, Yoongi firmly shakes his head again.
After a moment, his expression softened. “Neither do I.” Jimin confesses in a hushed tone, his eyes glancing to the passing patrons around them, before looking back to Yoongi. “I don’t think our cropping or farming seasons depend on our sacrifices to them.”
Yoongi nods in agreement. “The entire spectacle is a complete waste of preserved crops.” He pauses before he replies in a quieter tone, because as the son of Yusan’s Chief Advisor he should be careful about how much he criticizes the Council in public. “And if the Leaders didn’t learn that during the famine, I don’t believe they ever will.”
Jimin stares at him for a moment, his eyes twinkling of something that Yoongi can’t quite figure out, before he lets out a hum and looks down thoughtfully.
“You keep surprising me.” Jimin finally says after a moment, his eyes flicking back to Yoongi. Yoongi tilts his head slightly at that. “You’re not what I expected.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re a bit…” Jimin pauses, as he struggles to find a word, “defiant? I don’t mean that in a bad way—just I did not expect that a Yusanian alpha would be so similar to me, especially as the alpha of the Chief Advisor.”
Yoongi ponders Jimin’s observation for a moment.
He supposes Jimin is right though.Yoongi is a bit defiant of tradition and ritual despite being brought up in the Council. Unlike Namjoon who was extremely by the books due to their background, Yoongi will participate in tradition, but doesn’t necessarily adhere to all the rules. He doesn’t mind putting on a show for his father or the Council, because he knows it is what is expected of him.
“I’ve never considered that before, but we are pretty similar in that regard.” Yoongi admits, “I suppose my background is what makes me doubt a lot of our tradition. The famine was less than kind to Yusan and I believe that opened my eyes up quite a bit to question what we are taught.”
Jimin tilts his head, like he doesn’t quite understand what Yoongi means, but before he can say anything the young beta from the stall comes out to greet them with their freshly made bingsu on trays.
They both bow their heads as she bow deeply at them, blessing them before she serves each of their bowls to them and leaves them to eat.
Yoongi takes his plate and frees his spoon from the tray, before he is able to grab a first bite, Jimin already has a scoop of bingsu pointed at him.
Yoongi frowns in confusion. They ordered the same thing - red bean - so he doesn’t understand why Jimin would be offering them to him.
“For you.” Jimin says simply, dropping the the scoop into Yoongi’s bowl.
Yoongi blink in surprise, not quite understanding the gesture. He assumes that it is a Enjelan custom that he wasn’t familiar with, so he goes along with it and accepts the scoop with a grateful smile and takes a bite.
Yoongi then takes his a scoop of his bingsu and places it into Jimin’s bowl and looks at him expectantly.
Jimin doesn't say anything but he has a huge grin on his face and takes a happy bite of the offering that he gave to him, so Yoongi assumes he is doing something right.
“So, when do I able to practice my hunting skills again?” Jimin asks him between spoonfuls.
“Would the same time on Saturn Day work again?” Yoongi suggests.
“So far away.” Jimin sighs playfully with a tut, “I’m going to forget everything I learned last time.”
“You won’t.” Yoongi replies firmly, “I have to say you picked up the sport very quickly for a beginner.” Yoongi tells him with sincerity.
Jimin smiles at the praise, his cheeks reddening slightly when he looks down at his lap.
“You know, you never asked me what my pack role was.” He points out, after a moment, looking up at Yoongi with a cheeky grin spreading across his lips.
“My apologies, what is your role?” Yoongi asks with genuinely curiosity.
“Well, that’s no fun. You have to guess.” Jimin replies, playfully tsking.
Yoongi thinks deeply for a moment. There were several strengths of Jimin’s that he picked up over their short time together.
“Educator?”
That makes the most sense in Yoongi’s head, Jimin is extremely knowledgeable about a lot of different things and today was a big indicator of that.
Jimin crosses his arms and clicks his tongue in disapproval. “Are you just guessing that because I’m an omega?”
Yoongi shakes his head profusely. He would never want Jimin to think that he would assume that because of his status.
“No. My apologies—” Yoongi begins, but Jimin cuts him off with a laugh.
“I was just joking.” Jimin reassures him with a gentle smile, “But you are on the right track.”
“Tutor?” Yoongi tries again, though this time he is less confident in his guess.
“Trainer.” Jimin corrects him with a smile.
“Ah. Of course you are.” Yoongi responses with a nod, seeing it now.
Jimin smiles even wider, his eyes disappearing into his cheeks when he does.
That makes a lot of sense. No wonder Jimin picked up archery so quick. Physical activity came naturally to him given his role into his pack.
It’s interesting to Yoongi how different Enjel is from Yusan. Yusan only allow betas to be trainers outside of alpha training. It was a precaution put into place to lessen the aggressive within the pack. There have been too many instances where alphas have tried to dominant omegas during training sessions.
They continue talking until the thirteenth hour outside of the food stall. Despite, the growing heat around them as the day breaks, Yoongi doesn’t want it to end.
He really can’t help but notice the way he feels around the Enjelan omega, how much he enjoys spending time with him.
And he thinks that Jimin likes to spend time with him too. He can see it in the way the omega keeps inhaling his scent subtly as they continue to talk. The way his eyes light up at Yoongi, as if he’s the most fascinating thing in the world.
He isn’t sure what it means. This feeling is not something Yoongi has ever experienced before. But his body, mind, and instinct all feel so at ease sitting beside Jimin and inhaling his beautiful Enjelan scent.
