Chapter 1: Moving the couch to Tomura's room

Chapter Text

You help Tomura push the small sofa through Kurogiri’s warp. Its legs grate against the linoleum floor, but Tomura continuously insists that it doesn’t matter.

“Tomu, the floor!” you say in English.

“Stop whining, just push,” he replies.

“Tomu!” you whine.

He grunts as he shoves it through, his arms bumping against yours as he tries not to touch all five fingers to the fabric. You check the floor once the object is fully through. A few scuff marks mar the surface, and you whine more as you try to rub them away.

Tomura doesn’t care as he plops down on the sofa. “Asuka, stop that. Come sit.”

You give up your efforts and sit next to him, carefully minding the space between your bodies. The sofa now faces one of the monitors set up on a box in his room. His gaming station sits on the floor next to it. Tomura gets up and turns the device on before grabbing a cordless controller and sitting back down, sinking into the plush piece of furniture a little closer to you.

You watch as the monitor lights up the dark space, squinting at the brightness and rubbing your eyes to relieve the stinging pain behind them. Tomura turns to you, watching as you blink away the stars dancing in your eyes. He turns his attention back to the screen, and the noises from the game sound throughout Tomura’s small room as he clicks through the menu before loading his game.

“This is the Super Mario: Blast from the Past one hundredth anniversary [...] of the original game. It was recently re-released for all playing devices,” he explains.

“Oh, yeah, I know that one,” you tell him.

“Huh? How do you know this game?”

“I know sometimes game.”

He hums in response, staring at the main menu quietly. Finally, he asks, “Do you want to play together?”

You thought about it for a moment. It could be fun to play with him, but you know how competitive he can be sometimes and you’re not very good at playing video games. “No. I want to watch.”

He clicks the single player mode and the game loads in an instant. It’s impressive how far technology has come. The game is vibrant in its colors and textures. The sounds are rich and clear compared to the Super Mario games you’re familiar with. It really is a special anniversary edition.

As he games, he shifts his weight occasionally, inevitably getting closer to you as time goes on. You watch him play for over an hour before your eyelids start to droop. You lean your head against his shoulder as he fights Bowser. He stiffens for a moment before he regains his composure. He curses under his breath when he loses HP, but he’s able to quickly recover and beat the boss.

“Ha! It wasn’t even that hard. I can’t believe people used to lose at this game,” he says.

You close your eyes, not even paying attention to him playing. His shoulder feels warm against your temple and the rhythmic sounds of the game slowly begin to lull you to sleep.

“Are you even watching?” he says.

You nod your head softly, snuggling further into his shoulder. You feel him freeze underneath you for a moment. Then, he gently shifts so your head comfortably lies against him. It’s quiet for a bit before new sounds fill the room, only this time they’re much quieter than before.
