A Bun for Hitoshi

Summary:

“Is he your bunny?,” Hitoshi asked, gaining the attention of the girl. She looked up and flailed a little, shaking her head just as a woman caught up with her.
“I’m so so sorry!,” she said while she tried to catch her breath. “My daughter’s quirk came in last week and she accidentally used it on your schoolmate when they bumped into each other on Friday. We were going to take him to your school or a doctor, but then he ran away. We have been looking for him all weekend.”
The rest of the explanation was lost to Hitoshi when the meaning of her words slowly caught up with him. A quirk accident… with one of his schoolmates… Midoriya, who was missing… the green bunny… Oh, Kami!

OR

Hitoshi finds a bunny on his way home and adopts it. But this little ball of fluff is more then he expects. Oh boy.

Notes:

This year’s Easter holiday inspired this fic. I know I’ve been gone for a while and there has been a lot going on irl, but I’ll try to update "Lies My Mother Used to Tell" soon too, and maybe answer some questions about what's been going on, but… seeing as this is a one-shot though, I’ll just say Happy Easter/Holidays here and leave you alone with the fic ^-^

A Bun for Hitoshi

“I’m pathetic, aren’t I?,” Hitoshi whispered to his new pet dryly, staring at the wall at the other end of his bedroom. “I can’t even befriend a cute little bunny like you on my own. You too had to come to me.” Hitoshi sighed and then giggled at the cute little licks and nudges he was getting from the green ball of fluff currently resting on his chest. It was the weekend and on his way home from his Friday therapy session, Hitoshi had taken a shortcut through the park, musing about what his therapist had said: ‘You should try and talk to your classmates more, make some friends. You need to learn how to interact with others without being afraid of their instant judgment.’
Hitoshi had huffed. He knew that he couldn’t stay afraid of them being scared of his quirk and just push them away before he could get hurt. He knew that not all people were like that. His adoptive fathers where a prime example, for one. Both Yamada Hizashi and Aizawa Shouta had taken him in two years ago and it was one of the best things that had ever happened to Hitoshi. They had never judged him for his quirk or thought of it as something evil as most people tended to do once they learned about it.
And then there was Midoriya Izuku. The greenette Hitoshi had fought during the sports festival. Instead of antagonizing him for Brainwashing, Midoriya had tried to talk to Hitoshi a few times afterwards, asking about his quirk and also Hitoshi in general. But Hitoshi just couldn’t believe that someone who knew how is quirk worked wouldn’t reject him at one point. His dads where a different matter, he had grown to trust them. But schoolmates? Strangers? No way. It hadn’t helped that Midoriya was a literal ball of fluff, radiation sunshine and cuteness. The prospect of talking to Midoriya made Hitoshi nervous and blushy like a schoolgirl with a big crush.

“Maybe I should try and talk to those 1-A guys more… and if they turn out to be jerks, then I can say I at least try, right?,” Hitoshi mused, petting the fluffy bunny. The bun hat came to him on his way through the park and hadn’t left Hitoshi’s side. Worried that it would get hit by a car or something, he had taken it home with him. It was a strange bunny, because it seemed to understand every word he said. Especially now that he had started talking to it.
“What, you don’t think they will be bad? What about the tail user… Ojiro? He didn’t seem too fond of me after the cavalry battle…”
The bunny huffed and kind of… glared at Hitoshi? Could bunnies do that? That was ridiculous. No matter how intelligent the bunny was, it was just that. A bunny.
“I wonder if you have a quirk,” Hitoshi wondered, petting the green fur. It kind of reminded him of Midoriya too.
“You know, you look kind of like someone I fought as well. Midoriya Izuku. He’s got green hair, curly just like your fur. And he’s always so energetic and cute, just like you…” Hitoshi blushed and hid his face behind his hands.
“Ugh…. Why do I have to be so gay?” The bunny yipped startled and so did Hitosh, because suddenly, they weren’t alone anymore.
“If this is about Midoriya again, then I don’t want to hear it,” came the exhausted voice from his dad. The man must’ve come back from his patrols already and stood in his doorway, hero costume already halfway taken off. Glancing at the clock, Hitoshi mentally cursed. It was already past three in the morning. Damn his insomnia.
“Who’s that?,” his dad asked, stepping into the room, dark, dry eyes staring at the bunny on Hitoshi’s chest. Sitting up, Hitoshi placed his new pet on his lap instead, trying to hold it in place because upon seeing the man, it tried to jump down and run off.
“That’s my dad, he won’t hurt you, little bunny,” Hitoshi said to the fluff ball, trying to calm them down. To his dad he said: “I found them on my way home. Well, they kind of found me? I walked through the park and they kind of just… ran up and kept following me home? I couldn’t let them get hurt in the traffic, so…”
For a moment, Hitoshi worried. He hadn’t asked either of his dads if it was okay to just bring the bunny home and keep it. What if they didn’t want him to keep the fluff ball? Hitoshi had kind of already grown attached to them… and he also didn’t want to mess up. What if…
“I see… well then you better take good care of them,” his dad just said and shrugged, stepping back out of the room, apparently not bothered at all. Hitoshi held back a relieved sigh. If his dad didn’t mind, his paps wouldn’t either, that much was certain.

~*~

A few days later, Hitoshi was in the park again. He had gotten a leash for the bunny after school and had taken him out for a walk. The little one had been no fan of either the sex check or the leash, but Hitoshi didn’t want for him to run off and get hurt. Still, he was certain he could still feel embarrassment wave off of the little one as he stayed by his side, not looking at Hitoshi at all. But Hitoshi had his mind elsewhere anyways. Because Midoriya was missing. He hadn’t shown up at home on Friday and nobody had seen him during the weekend. He also hadn’t shown up to class this Monday.
“I wonder what happened to him,” Hitoshi said worriedly. “I hope he didn’t get kidnapped or something. Wouldn’t be a surprise considering he’s in 1-A…”
It was a lame joke and if the huff from his bunny was anything to go by, he thought so too.
“Alright, let’s get you some fresh grass,” Hitoshi said and elongated the leash when they reached an area with less people and more grass. The bunny didn’t seem particularly excited to be back at the park though. That is, until a small voice called out:
“There! I see him! That’s him!”

A little girl ran up to him and for a moment, Hitoshi was reminded of his few days of fame after the sports festival when he had gotten greetings from random strangers for making it to the one on one-battles. It had been really weird. But this couldn’t be about that, right? It had been weeks already and people forgot. Especially with what had been going on in Hosu…
Hitoshi stared at the kid who ran up and crouched down in front of his bunny, completely ignoring him, and realization dawned upon him. Maybe the bunny was the girl’s pet? Maybe he had run away and the poor kid had been looking for him all weekend? Hitoshi felt dread settle in his stomach. He wasn’t going to take away someone’s family member, but he had grown awfully attached to the green fluff ball already and had been thinking about what to name him too. The bunny had been nice company over the past few days and a great listener as well.

“M-midoriya?,” Hitoshi asked shakily, staring at his bunny with growing horror. The bunny in question nodded and jumped a bit in what looked like excitement, then started running around Hitoshi in circles, uncaring of how that would trap both boys in the leash.

After calling his dad and more talking to the girl and her mother, they figured out that the girl’s quirk allowed her to turn someone into a bunny. The transformation lasted a few days, a week at max. At some point, his dad had come to pick them both up.
“Just your luck, Problem Child,” he sighed once they met and then went to call Mrs. Midoriya.
Meanwhile, Hitoshi was having a crisis. Among all the embarrassing things he had told the bunny, Midoriya, over the weekend, he had also basically confessed his feelings for him. Hitoshi wanted to die. Preferably right then and there. But sadly, he wasn’t that lucky.

It was decided that Midoriya would spend the rest of his bunny-time with them, seeing as his mother couldn’t find a substitute for work and also wasn’t trained to deal with possible emergencies considering quirk accidents. If something would happen when Midoriya turned back human, he would be in good hands at his teachers’ place. So they went back to Hitoshi’s and once they got there, Hitoshi made a bee-line for his room, closing the door behind himself. He was sure his dads would take care of Midoriya for now. He just.. he couldn’t face his crush right now.

Hitoshi did what he always did. He shut down and ran away. In this case, he hid in his room, pretending to work on his homework and not wanting to be disturbed. Hitoshi could tell that his dad was seeing right through him, but the man didn’t say anything, so he only had to avoid the sound of bunny paws scratching at his door once in a while, along with quiet yips and huffs. And that was easy with the right playlist and headphones. Needless to say that Hitoshi didn’t get any homework done. No, Hitoshi was too busy having his crisis, thank you very much.

Around dinner time, his paps poked his head inside, calling him to dinner.
“Did Midoriya change back yet?,” Hitoshi asked, putting his headphones away. His paps shook his head.
“No, he didn’t, but he keeps passing by your door and watches it closely. I think he misses your company,” his dad said, but Hitoshi just shook his head.
“I can’t do this right now…,” he said and stared down at his still unfinished assignments. He felt guilty and ashamed because of his cowardliness, but still couldn’t bring himself to leave the room and face Midoriya.
His paps sighed. “Let me at least bring you something to eat in here.”
“Okay,” Hitoshi agreed though he was unsure if his stomach could take it.
To outsiders, it might seem like he was overreacting. So his crush had heard him gush about how cute Hitoshi thought he was. So what? But this went way deeper. Hitoshi had spilled his weaknesses. He had told the ‘bunny’ about how scared he was of being judged for his quirk, had told him stories about how he was being bullied at middle school, hat told him about therapy. That weekend, Hitoshi had talked so much it, must have broken his personal record. But he couldn’t help himself, Midoriya had kept listening so attentively, those green eyes soaking up the information, paws and ears twitching with excitement and attention…

His dad brought him a plate with food, Hitoshi’s favorite. Great, now he also felt guilty for most likely not being able to eat it.
“Don’t beat yourself up too much, Hitoshi,” his paps said, reading Hitoshi’s expression like an open book. “I know Midoriya and he’s a very nice guy. And who knows, maybe you’ll get a friend out of this. Or maybe a boyfriend?”
His paps winked at his flustered expression and left the room, closing the door behind himself once more.
‘Sure,’ Hitoshi thought. ‘As if I’d ever be this lucky.’

Around 1 AM, there was another knock at Hitoshi’s door. Expecting a scolding from either of his dads for being up this late on a school night, he opened it, only to come face to face with one Midoriya Izuku. A Midoriya Izuku who was wearing one of Hitoshi’s shirts and sweatpants. Hitoshi blinked, eyes wide, and stared frozen in place as Midoriya forced his way past him and into the room. The greenette was fidgeting with his fingers, eyes flickering around the room. Then, he seemed to make a decision because those big green orbs settled on Hitoshi, determination shining bright inside of them.
“I was q-quirkless until 14. I-I got my quirk during the entrance exam,” Midoriya started. “I’ve always loved learning about others quirks b-because I didn’t have one. So… I’m sorry if my q-questions make you uncomfortable. I do think that your quirk is great for heroics though.”

Hitoshi felt as if a truck hat just hid him as he processed the information. And also remembered what he had said during the sports festival. Crap. And despite his shitty attitude and his quirk, Midoriya had stuck around? Had come to Hitoshi and tried to befriend him? While his thoughts were racing, Midoriya continued: “I know you didn’t mean to tell me anything of what you did, b-but I promise I won’t tell anyone. I’ll even leave you alone from now on, if that’s what you w-”
“No!,” Hitoshi cut in, interrupting Midoriya. Then he blinked and continued slowly. “No, I… I didn’t mean to tell you all of this… and I also didn’t want to make you uncomfortable…” Hitoshi blushed and looked away. “But I’m also… kind of glad you know now? So I didn’t have to tell you?”
“B-but you did?,” Midoriya said, tilting his head cutely in confusion. Hitoshi just stared at him, waiting for him to understand what he meant to say.
“O-oh… I get it,” Midoriya flushed. “S-so that means… you’re okay with me still… talking to you?”
And oh, the hope in those beautiful eyes was hitting Hitoshi’s heart right where it hurt.
“Of course!,” he answered, sounding way too eager in his opinion. But it was worth it, because Midoriya giggled. He giggled! And oh goodness, if that was how their future interactions were going to go, Hitoshi was going to die of a heart attack at the age of fifteen.
“For what i-it’s worth,” Midoriya said, smile as bright as the sun, “I really l-like you too, Shinsou-kun.”
“Call me Hitoshi,” Hitoshi said, mouth faster then his brain once more. He blushed furiously but again, worth it, because: “O-only if y-you call me I-izuku.”
“Okay… Izuku,” Hitoshi said and gathered all of his courage before hesitantly reaching out, taking Mid- no, Izuku’s hand and intertwining their fingers. Maybe his dad was right and he would get a boyfriend out of this? The way Izuku smiled and hugged him tight, their hands still locked together seemed a great sign after all.
“I really do like you, Izuku,” he whispered, face hidden in those soft green curls. Izuku hummed and squeezed him tighter. And Hitoshi felt more relieved then ever.

~The End~

Notes:

I hope you liked this fic. I admit, the ending is a little open, but I’m considering this a practice fic to maybe/hopefully get back into writing before tackling an update on my ongoing multi-chapter ShinDeku-fic. Feedback of all kinds is appreciated as always <3
