a slip of the tongue

Summary:

Xu Boyuan accidentally reveals his relationship with Han Wenqing. It's not bad, actually, unless you're Tyranny's PR

Notes:

This ship still lives rent free in my head, so have a little ficlet.

Work Text:

Xu Boyuan is on his fifth coffee of the day when he runs into a reporter outside of Blue Rain’s stadium. All Stars is a stressful event as a guild elite and he really does not want to deal with any interviews but he also cannot be rude when he is representing the team and so he stops, hoping he looks at least somewhat awake.

“So who is your favourite pro?” The reporter starts, an excited look in her eyes. Xu Boyuan starts to think he might not be the only one running on too much caffeine. “Blue Rain, I suppose.”

“Yes,” he smiles politely. A few steps away, Zhou Xi is pretending to not be interested in the conversation. “Huang Shaotian is my favourite.”

“I see. If you had the chance to date him, would you?”

What the fuck is that kind of question now? Xu Boyuan stares, blinks and shakes his head. “No.” Huang Shaotian is more like a little brother, a friend. Besides, doesn’t everyone know about him and Yu Wenzhou?

“Alright, if you had the chance to date any pro, who would it be?”

“Well, I’m dating … uh, I would date Han Wenqing. Theoretically.”

While Zhou Xi looks like he’s dying of laughter, Xu Boyuan vows to drink less coffee.

Han Wenqing knows that something is up when he sees Zhang Xinjie frown at him.

“Captain,” he starts. “Your boyfriend is on TV.”

That in itself is not really impressive, considering they are in Guangzhou and Xu Boyuan is on of the top players in the guild. He simply raises an eyebrow.

Xinjie, instead of explaining, turns on the news. It’s not the most legit channel, one that focuses more on gossip than anything else, but there is Xu Boyuan in front of the camera, looking exhausted and a little confused because he is not being asked about Glory itself. Han Wenqing watches the little clip, then sighs.

“I see,” he says. Tyranny’s PR is going to be very unhappy with them, but it’s not like they planned to keep their relationship a secret.

“What is your plan?”

Han Wenqing frowns. Planning isn’t exactly his strength, but he should come up with a few ideas, he supposes. “Make sure he sleeps.” That’s a solid start, he thinks. Xu Boyuan needs to take a nap before continuing his work. “And maybe release a statement?”

“Please don’t just post something on weibo,” Xinjie says, looking at the TV where various reporters and fans are now speculating about Han Wenqing’s mystery boyfriend and if that’s even believable. At least no one is focussing on Xu Boyuan as a person yet.

“Fine.” Han Wenqing grabs his phone and jacket and checks the time again. No more duties for today, so he can take a break and his boyfriend can take a break. “I will contact the PR department.”

The bed is incredibly comfortable and Xu Boyuan wants to stay in it forever. He’s not entirely sure how he got here, but he thinks it involves Han Wenqing carrying him, which would be embarrassing if he wasn’t still mortified by the interview and the fact that tyranny’s PR department might murder him.

“Feeling better?”

He turns, blinking an eye open and smiling despite the exhaustion that’s settled into his body. Han Wenqing is here, which means the All Stars events for the day have not yet started. Which hopefully means he can get a few cuddles and kisses. “Yes, thank you.” He reaches out, tugging at Han Wenqing’s arm. “And … I’m sorry.”

“I still don’t blame you.” Han Wenqing, unfortunately already dressed, lets himself be moved and Xu Boyuan quickly finds himself in a hug. Right, they talked about this yesterday. He was, however, sleep deprived and high on coffee then.

“How is PR doing?”

There’s an amused scoff from Han Wenqing but Xu Boyuan can’t see his expression because he is busy burying his face in his boyfriend’s neck. “They’ll live.”

Well, he isn’t going to argue there. Han Wenqing can surely handle them. The bad news is that they don’t really have much time left. Xu Boyuan, not yet ready to do more than put on his glasses, busies himself with his phone while Han Wenqing starts moving to do … something. Probably acquire breakfast.

Opening weibo is a mistake. Of course, people have already found his account and now his notifications are exploding. Xu Boyuan frowns as he starts skimming over them, just in case there is something important hidden between all the nonsense. Some people are surprisingly supportive, wishing him all the best. Others threaten him and throw around insults, so he blocks those. There are a few comments about how he is stealing Han Wenqing from Ye Qiu.

Those last category is actually a little amusing. Have these people never heard of polyamory? Xu Boyuan knows of Han Wenqing’s feelings for Ye Qiu and they don’t bother him. He probably has a crush on the guy himself.

“Everything alright?”

Han Wenqing is back and, sure enough, has brought breakfast. There’s even a mug of coffee, albeit a small one.

“I’m good,” Xu Boyuan smiles, placing his phone by his clothes and refocussing his attention to his boyfriend. “Gonna have to ignore social media for the day, though.”

“Probably for the best,” Han Wenqing scoffs. He sits down in one of the chairs in the room, which Xu Boyuan think is unfair. They could still cuddle a bit. “Wear some nice clothes today, we have a date with Ye Qiu later.”

Xu Boyuan, about to take a bite out of a croissant, sputters. “What?”
