Work Text:
“Kate Bishop, I love you.” Yelena paused, inhaling deeply, steadying herself. “I’ve never told anyone that before.”
‘What!?’ Record scratch, Kate’s brain is skipping. She freezes, unsure what to day.
“Are you about to do something stupid?” Kate asks. Apparently her mouth has moved on without her.
“No” Yelena’s eyes squint, investigating this befuddled version of Kate. “I’m about to do something very smart.” She turns to go, the world needs saving and cannot wait. “I just wanted to tell you first.”
“Wait!” Kate calls grabbing Yelena by the arm, a deathly dangerous thing to do, unless you're Kate Bishop and wildly in love with an assassin, who I guess loves you back. Yelena turns her head to watch Kate, meeting her gaze, feeling the desperation in her eyes like a punch to the chest. “I love you! Just wait!” Kate pulls back, arms wrapping Yelena into her embrace, crushing their bodies together. “Don’t go.” Kate can’t help the desperate tears escaping her brown eyes.
“Don’t cry, Kate.” Yelena hugs her back, cradling the back of her neck with one hand, bringing Kate’s eyes up to meet hers. “I have to go.” The news doesn’t stop a single tear from flowing. “I’ll come back,” she whispers. “I promise,” and Yelena seals it with a kiss. The earth shakes, an explosion rumbles. The world and its villains can no longer wait.
This time Kate can believe in promises. Because they’re from Yelena. And Yelena loves her.
