Chapter 1: moving in

Chapter Text

Ongsa nearly tripped up the stairs. The boxes in her arms wobbled as she tried to regain her balance.

Ongsa let out a breath. This is not how she wanted to start her move into university.

Pushing those thoughts aside she continued to travel onwards

Ongsa was moving into her dorms today. She hadn’t met her roommate yet. There was a group email for the dorms living arrangement that she and her cousin Aylin were both had sent to them as they were starting uni at the same time. They had hoped that they could room together as they were used to living together through high school, but fate had it that the two introverts were to expand their social circles this year, so they only knew the full names of the person who they’d be rooming with.

Ongsa just hoped that her roommate was nice, which wasn't much to ask for. She could deal with a bit of mess and noise. But the reality was Ongsa just wanted a new friend.

Ongsa approached the door to her new room. Room 23. Aylins room wasn’t too far from hers, Room 18, so that was something. Ongsa knew that she could always go to her cousin if she got overwhelmed. They were close like that but is mostly due to the lack of friends they had in high school. Ongsa wouldn’t really have changed anything about that though. It was comfortable, and what laid behind this door was anything but comfort.

Pushing that negative though back, Ongsa fiddled around in her pockets trying to find her keys to open the door while somehow maintaining the box’s balance, when she heard the door pop open from the inside.

Ah the roommate.

Ongsa tried to move the boxes around to see said person who opened the door but couldn’t see well over the boxes. The top of a head is all that she could see. Rich, red-tinted hair pulled back into a ponytail secured with a bow was the first thing that was noticed. Her roommate must be quite a bit shorter than her.

“Ah sorry!” chirped out a small voice, likely from said roommate. “Let me get out of your way, do you have any more boxes i am happy to help!”

The girl in front of her kept talking at a fast pace.

She must also be nervous, Ongsa thought to herself.

“I’m ok thanks. This is most of my stuff to be honest, I'll be fine once i put it down.”

With that the girl moved to hold the door open and Ongsa walked in and placed the boxes on the first available space she could find. Once she was happy that her boxes weren't going to fall over, she turned around to face the person she would be spending a lot of time with this next year.

The sight before her almost made her heart stop. The sapphic in her needed to calm the fuck down. The girl before her was breathtaking. Big round eyes that looked right up at her because she was quiet a lot shorter than Ongsa. And her smile, wow Ongsa was feeling way too many feeling for the first meet. Despite her lack of height, the way her roommate held herself demanded attention as she seemed full of confidence and kindness. A double kill in vibes.

“I’m Sun” her roommate said, beaming and offering a small wave. So much cuteness radiated off of her. Sun was the perfect name realistically. The girl practically screamed warmth and positivity.

Ongsa had to get a hold of herself.

“Ongsa” she managed to mumble out. Being shy would be the death of her really. But Sun gave her a big smile anyway as if happy with the response.

“Well, I have to go and grab a few more things from my car”, sun started reeling while heading to the door. “I chose the bed on the right, hope that’s ok. See you in a bit!” and Sun was gone.

Ongsa headed towards her apparent bed and flopped down on it. What the fuck just happened. Ongsa wasn't the best at holding conversations, but to completely freeze up was rare. Maybe it was just nerves or the fact that Sun was beautiful and Ongsa was a raging homo. Only time will tell if this is a crush, but having a crush on your probably straight roommate was a recipe for disaster.

Ongsa tried to pull herself together. She pulled out her phone from her pocket to text Aylin to see if she was dealing any better than her. But the reply of sad alien faces said all that she needed to know. So Ongsa did the next thing which was to start unpacking.

She folded and put her clothes into draws and started arranging her decor on her desk. She didn't have much. But the most important thing for her to place was her little pride shrine. It wasn't much, just a small collection of stickers, some pins and a little flag of the lesbian colours.

Ongsa stepped back to admire her display and smiled. She hadn’t been out long figuring out she was queer in the last year of high school meant that she hadn’t had the opportunity to find many other queer peers but she came out to her sister and cousin and that felt like enough. But now she is in uni, she can be herself and maybe find other people like her and the best way to start that is being proud herself and allowing a space for it.

Once she was happy with how she had set up her side of the room, Ongsa sent another message to Aylin to meet up to go get food and explore the campus a bit before orientation started the next day.

When Ongsa was about to leave Sun walked back into the room carrying a few items.

“Oh are you off somewhere?” Sun asked.

“Just meeting up with my cousin, we were going to get food and explore campus a bit.” Ongsa shuffled awkwardly shifting forwards on her feet. “uhh would you like to join us..or i mean,, I'm sure you have some friends here or something..you don’t have to if you don’t feel like...” the ramble was cut of by Suns sweet giggle. Ongsa stated to worry that she had said the wrong thing but Sun quickly was able to squash that trail of thought when she spoke.

“Sure, that would be great. I have an awful sense of direction and would probably get really lost if I ventured out alone. Let me put these down and then we can leave.”

Ongsa smiled at this, it was getting easier to be around Sun now and having Aylin with them would probably cut the awkwardness down too. So out they went to find Aylin.
