From the moment Maya stepped into the hospital, her entire being was desperate to lock eyes with the brown ones she’d come to treat as her lifeline.
Even though her most conscious thought right now was to know if Andy was okay, somewhere in her heart, she needed to see her wife. Carina had to be around here somewhere, and Maya knew she would go looking for her in a few moments, once they knew Andy’s condition.
And right when Helm ordered them to get evaluated themselves Maya took that opportunity to think… ‘I can go find Carina while the others get checked out first….’
“We got a baby… born in the field, yea!”
Maya turned at the sound of her wife’s voice. She froze for a moment. Carina hadn’t been in the hospital all this while?!
And then Maya registered Carina’s get-up. Firefighter Brush gear?!
“Grab me a warmer. She needs a PEDS evaluation…” Carina said to a nurse
Maya waited. Her wife was doing her job. Her wife was doing her job brilliantly as always. Whereas Maya today, almost lost her life. Almost abandoned her sweet sweet…
‘Don’t think about it right now’ Maya ordered herself internally.
“Hey” she said, in that soft gentle manner that came so naturally to her when addressing her Italian wife. Her wife.
“Hey” Carina said, finally bringing her whole attention to the love of her life. A relief washed over her too, one she could not show too evidently right now, because of everything else she had to appraise Maya about… it was all rushing through her mind so quickly. She had so much to say.
“Why are you in brush gear?” was Maya’s first question.
Carina should have expected it. It was a first. While Maya had seen Carina in turnouts before, she'd never seen her in this yellow suit.
It was Maya’s hands on her, holding her arms so protectively, that went straight to her heart. Carina wanted to melt into her embrace in that moment, but there were more important things to be said right now…
Maya had no clue. Maya was in the midst of their baby, and she had no clue. The moment was here.
“Ah…” Carina stuttered nervously for a moment, and then took her wife’s hands, pulling her along, toward the exit.
“I’ll tell you in a second… I…” Carina said, collecting her words, gathering her emotions for what she was about to tell her wife.
Maya stared at her wife… she looked… well Maya couldn’t quite read her right now, which made all of this even more anxiety-prompting.
“What?” Maya asked
“I had to go help Warren deliver a baby in the Wildfire” Carina stated
They’d reached outside now, and Carina really just wanted them to have their own little private conversation, just them, no one else to eavesdrop on such a defining moment in their life as a family.
“Are you okay?” Maya just had to ask, because all this while, she was under the assumption that her Carina was safe, here. But to know now, she was out there, in the same wildfire that Maya had almost lost her life in, that Maya had a moment of flashing back… or forward... to everything she could have lost in minutes… Maya tried to focus, there had to be a reason Carina was being so… nervous?
“Yea yea, I’m okay..” carina assured
“Babe, you’re scaring me”
Old Maya would have never admitted such a thing. But this was who they were now. Vulnerable with one another when things got scary.
Their hands were still always holding one another... Like an anchor in the moment. Like they needed to make up for all the time they were away from one another today, in the midst of the wildfires…
Carina’s fingers reached for Maya’s waist, her belt loops, just to tug her nearer.
“Ha…. I was so scared for you… out there...” Carina let out… the fear in her voice still so fresh, like she could re-live those moments of fear on demand…
Maya was still holding her arms, a subconscious way to assure her ‘I’m here, I’m here with you my love’
“And let's face it I was scared for me too, because…” Carina said
Maya's breath caught in her throat, what happened out there?!
“I..” Carina began
Carina couldn’t keep up the charade anymore, a small smile donned her lips… a sparkle in her eyes that confused Maya beyond anything now
“...didn’t wanna end up being a single mom… of two tiny babies…” Carina let out.
Maya found she couldn’t get that breath out still. Carina's eyes shone in a way Maya had seen at certain milestones in their life. The day they asked one another to move in. The day Carina came back from the airport and asked Maya to marry her. The day they married one another, for better or for worse…
Was this… ?
It dawned on Maya then… Carina’s words… what she meant… this was… another big moment.
Carina’s lower lip pulled inward… in anticipation, waiting to see Maya’s reaction.
Maya’s mouth was agape, and she felt it. It started as this little glimmer in her chest, how do you describe the feeling of light starting to glow in your heart, because that was what she was feeling right now.
And then her face showed it, all of her body suddenly catching up, suddenly becoming hyperaware of the words that had left her wife's lips
“Two…?” Maya whispered. There it was, that gentle tone again. And even if she wouldn’t admit it, somewhere in her heart she knew, that a tone that was reserved for soft moments with Carina and Liam, was now going to belong to a new member of their little family.
Maya’s smile grew wider, as she let it all sink in… her world felt like it had been transformed. She wanted to cry. Because after the day she just had. After what she almost lost…
‘Stay here… stay present…’ she told herself internally again, and it helped that her wife’s gaze was so sure, and so calming, and so loving, and perfect…
“Oh my god, we’re pregnant” Maya managed to get words out of her lips… even as the tears glazed over her eyes, her hand reaching out to caress her wife’s face…
Right now, at this very moment, there was a life growing inside Carina. A life created part Maya, part Carina. Maya’s joy knew no bounds. She didn’t know how to describe it, but it was like her heart grew bigger in that very moment. Was that even possible? That your heart makes more room? Very exclusive space for a new member.
Maya held on to Carina’s face, the way they always did, her grip firm, sure, the glee on her face too much to contain. Carina was nodding, her eyes shining so much, Maya wanted to get lost in them.
“We’re pregnant” Carina reiterated like she needed to say it too, to make it feel more real... Because after all this time, after all their efforts, and attempts, this worked. Maya’s eggs. Inside her. Worked.
Their very own baby was inside her right now, and her emotions were too overwhelming for this moment. But her wife was holding her, and her wife was holding her together, and holding her safe, and all in all, just pouring out joy and love towards her and their baby…
“Two babies..” Carina exclaimed in her high-pitched Carina-esque tone… holding up two fingers.
Because that’s what it was going to be now. Their little Liam was still so little. By the time their new baby came around, Liam would not be that much older. They would be raising two babies at once. Two tiny little angels that they could call their own.
Maya couldn’t hold back any longer, even as she took in her wife’s excitement and giggles, she leaned in, and brought Carina’s face closer, and pressed her lips against hers… finally. After this day. After this wildfire, to be here… holding her wife… kissing her… was heaven.
Maya felt life rush through her veins… like an elixir. Because kissing her wife, her pregnant wife, was just how she needed this day to end.
Carina’s hand held the side of her jaw with certainty, and care. Like she too had been waiting all day, to be this close to her wife again.
Because she had been. She’d waited, ever since she got the news about the pregnancy, she’d waited patiently to have this moment, to tell Maya they were going to be moms to a new baby, their own little baby.
They’d had a lot of high moments in their life. But this one, this one right here, had taken the number-one spot. Their whole world was going to change once again, second only to the day they brought Liam into their lives, and boy were they ready to build, and nurture this family.
As Maya kissed her wife, holding her close, she felt this sort of bubble form around them. She’d first felt it the day Liam was brought home. And now, that bubble grew stronger, thicker. She had more to love, more to protect, more she could lose. Something switched in Maya in that moment. Her body shivered and Carina seemed to notice
“You okay, bambina?” Carina whispered at her lips
Maya nodded, still smiling gleefully
“I’ve never been happier” Maya said
Carina giggled and kissed her some more
“When can we go home?” Maya asked
“I still have to be here for a few hours…” Carina said, her hands never leaving Maya’s face. Her thumb lightly stroking her skin lovingly.
“But you’re pregnant, you need to get some rest too...” Maya said
Carina gave her a squinted-eyes look.
“I’ll wait here… with you and…” Maya looked down, right at Carina’s belly
“Maya!” Carina laughed
Maya smiled wide, “What?” she said “We’re having a baby!” Maya exclaimed… her hand slowly grazing Carina’s lower belly
Carina closed her eyes, smiling, she bit her lower lip.
“I can’t wait to take you home” Maya said
Carina gazed into her blue eyes dreamily. And then, sudden realization dawned upon her
“Bambina, did you get checked out after you came here?” Carina asked
“Uhhh no, I got here minutes before you did” Maya said
“Bambina!” Carina scolded, and took Maya’s hand, and then led her back inside with her. Maya smiled to herself. It was only now that she allowed herself to fully appreciate just how good her wife looked in that gear

It was around 2 am when Carina finally was able to get off shift. Maya had been resting on the couch in Carina’s office. Begrudgingly. She’d been sent there by Dr. Bailey, when Maya was following Carina around too much and insisting she take breaks
Now usually, Carina wouldn't be one to take this level of protectiveness. And she would talk to Maya tomorrow about it. But today, they’d had a long day apart, and given that Maya had only just learned that Carina was pregnant, Carina understood her excitement.
But Dr. Bailey didn’t have to understand it, and so she ordered Maya away to Carina’s office, until Carina was off shift.
But Maya couldn’t bring herself to get a nap. No. All she could think off now, was Liam, and their new baby-to-be.
She was sure she was dreaming of them at the same school or something, when Carina finally walked into her office
Maya quickly got up
“Bambina, please rest…”
“I’m okay… how are you?” Maya asked
“I’m alright… done with shift, so we can go home in a bit.” Carina said
“Come here” Maya said, patting the seat next to her
Carina smiled, and came to sit beside Maya, and Maya put her arm around her, Carina snuggled into her side, burying her face into Maya’s neck…
“You’ve still got soot on you” Carina noted
“I’m sorry, yea” Maya said, pulling away, not wanting Carina to inhale any of that
“It’s okay” Carina said
“I need a shower”
“You could have showered here, bambina. I have extra clothes kept here” Carina said
“No, um… I’d rather we go home” Maya said
Carina nodded
“Are you okay?” Carina asked again
“Yes, all cleared by Helm herself” Maya said with a smile
“Aside from your physiological evaluation bambina, do you feel okay? I know you had a rough day…” Carina said
Maya smiled softly. This was her wife. Always sensing when something was amiss.
“I’m fine… I just wanna be home now… with you, and Liam, and…” Maya looked at Carina’s lower belly again
Carina smiled, she leaned in and kissed Maya's cheek
“We’ll leave in 10, okay?” Carina said, getting up from the couch to go behind her desk, and log a few things there on her laptop.
Maya rose from the couch to help gather Carina’s things and put them in her bag, and then they left together, hand in hand.

They’d taken a cab back. Leaving Carina’s Porsche at the hospital today. They were both extremely exhausted, and Carina was more than happy to be snuggled into Maya’s side for the entire ride home.
Maya had her hand in Carina’s hair, lightly massaging her scalp, playing in her hair. It was soothing, and almost made Carina feel drowsy
“You’ll put me to sleep this way” Carina whined, with a smile.
“You can sleep… I’ll carry you in” Maya assured, kissing atop Carina’s head
Carina smiled to herself.
“Tell me about the fire today” Carina said
Maya was glad Carina had no direct sight of her face in that moment. Because Maya immediately pictured the fires all around her, closing in on her, the images that flashed in her mind in that moment
“Bambina?” Carina called out when Maya hadn't said anything in reply
“Don’t worry your mind with that babe, it’s done and dusted. I’m just glad we’re both finally going home now”
Carina wanted to probe further. Maya was deflecting. What was she not saying? Did something bad happen at the wildfires?! Carina wondered
They stopped by Peggy and Dana’s place to pick Liam up. Carina held him close as they drove on towards home, their little sleeping baby. Maya had her arm around Carina, watching over him too
He looked like he was dreaming… his eyes twitched now and then
“What do you think babies dream of?” Maya asked
“Food, sleep, boobies…” Carina said
“Boobiess?” Maya laughed, and Carina shushed her for being loud
“Sorry sorry” she said quickly whispering again
“Well, yea. Liam here didn’t get breast milk… but…” Carina began
“Ah” Maya said. Their second baby would… feed from Carina's breasts…”
Maya bit her lip.
Carina looked at her with a smile
“What?” Carina asked
“Nothing”
“What? What are you thinking?” Carina prompted
Maya chuckled “Nothing, I’m serious” Maya said
Carina shook her head
“I’m excited, that’s all” Maya said, smiling to herself
“For me to breastfeed?” Carina asked
“Aren’t you?” Maya asked, staring at her wife’s lovely face
“I am, but I don’t get why you’re this excited” Carina laughed
Maya brushed it off
“You’re a kid, sometimes” Carina teased
Maya leaned in and nibbled on her wife’s ear, and then kissed her neck
“Let me be excited about our pregnancy okay…” Maya said at her skin
“Okay, bambina” Carina said, turning her head, and capturing Maya’s lips in a sweet, slow, sensual kiss,
And just when the kiss grew more intense, Liam wiggled in Carina’s arms, slowly stirring awake
“Hey hey hey” Carina cooed at him, rocking him slowly, he whined, almost starting to cry
Maya placed her hand on the top of his head
“Hey bud… it’s okay… your momma’s got you. And I’m here too” she said to him soothingly, her thumb moving soothingly on his head, till he softly closed his eyes again,
Carina and Maya watched till he fell asleep again in seconds
“They sleep so easy sometimes,” Maya said, and then looked at Carina
Carina raised an eyebrow at her
“Okay okay, that’s my sleep-deprived brain talking.” Maya admitted, because they both knew how much trouble Liam had sleeping for longer than 2-3 hours sometimes
“You should get right to bed once we’re home” Carina said, looking out the window to check how much longer it would take them to reach
“Are you crazy, we’re celebrating when we’re home” Maya said
Carina smiled
“Aren’t you tired?” Carina asked
“I'm actually feeling quite wired from the day” Maya admitted
“Okay okay…” Carina said
“But if you’re sleepy… I wouldn’t wanna keep you up…” Maya said
“Depends, what do you have in mind for ‘celebrations’?” Carina asked wiggling her eyebrows.
Maya smiled, her gaze shifting to Carina’s lips.

“You know you don’t have to put on lingerie...” Maya said from the bed.
She’d showered first because Carina insisted she should get all the soot and grime off her body, and in that time, Carina had put Liam to bed.
Now Carina was in the bathroom, and Maya was in bed, waiting for her.
“Oh but I do, it’s a special night...” Carina said from inside
Maya smiled to herself, she herself hadn’t worn anything under her night t-shirt. But she did put on a pair of briefs that Carina liked on her, under her shorts.
“That it is… but you know I love you in anything…” Maya called out to her
“In fact, I’d love it even more if you came out in absolutely nothing,” Maya added
“Are you ready?” Carina called out from behind the door of their bathroom
Maya sat up straighter against the pillows
“I am” she said, waiting impatiently, expecting to see Carina walk out in either her red lingerie set, or the lacy black ensemble Maya had gifted her once.
Maya’s mouth was already watering in anticipation
But there was no way Maya would be prepared for what she was about to see
Carina walked out wearing the yellow suit… firefighter brush gear.
Maya’s jaw dropped
She had a helmet in hand too, and she did this power pose at the foot of the bed.
Maya forgot how to breathe. Carina’s hair was let down this time, and the front zipper wasn’t pulled all the way up. In fact, the zipper sat low enough on her chest, revealing just the right amount of cleavage
“Well?” Carina said with a knowing smile
Maya tried to form words. She did. But some nonsensical sound came out of her lips.
Carina chuckled
“I’m sorry” Maya said, shaking her head, and then letting her gaze wander, checking her wife out from head to toe
“You know, when I saw you in this earlier… I wasn’t in the mind space to appreciate just how good you looked in it…” Maya said, she bit her lip, and locked gazes with her wife
“I know” Carina said, smiling knowingly
“Good thinking… wearing it now” Maya said, she then crawled forward, needing to be closer to her wife already,
She knelt on the bed, right before Carina
“Where’d you get it from?” Maya asked, and then noticed the name tag on it “Lt. Deluca-Bishop” on it.
“Babe! Did you steal my spare gear from the station?!” Maya asked, her eyes wide in surprise.
“Who’s gonna notice other than you?” Carina said. “Besides, you can take it right back in tomorrow.” Carina said, her hand now coming up to caress Maya’s face
And then she leaned in for a kiss
“Fuck” Maya whispered
“What?” Carina giggled into the kiss, Maya’s hands finally held Carna’s waist
“You look… like something out of a dream...” Maya said, her hand coming up to graze the skin of Carina’s chest, whatever was revealed at the top of the zipper at least
Maya scooted off the bed, Carina backed up a bit, and Maya slowly pinned her back to a wall, kissing down her neck passionately
Carina closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling of her wife’s hungry lips on her skin
“We’re gonna have a baby” Maya whispered as she kissed...
Carina smiled “We are”
“I can’t believe it” Maya said, one of her hands on the wall, a little to the right and above Carina’s head
Her hips pressed up against Carina’s, her breath warm, her mouth hungry on her skin.
And then Carina felt Maya’s hand reach up and graze against the side of her breast, over the gear
Carina shivered
Maya pulled the zipper down slowly,
Carina felt shivers go up her spine… because the next thing she knew it, Maya’s fingers were tracing up the centre of her torso, where the zipper parted
Carina was ticklish, and so she squirmed a bit
Maya smiled into the kiss
“Stop it” Carina said
“Stop what?” Maya asked purposefully
“You know what” Carina said, daring to look straight into her wife’s eyes now
“Can I do this?” Maya asked, as she slowly maneuvered her hand into the jumpsuit, and cupped Carina’s breast
Carina bit her lower lip, and nodded
Maya began to kiss her again, and this time, she fondled Carina’s breast shamelessly
And when Maya flicked her nipple, Carina whined
Maya leaned close to her ear
“I can’t wait to witness every new stage of pregnancy you go through…” Maya said at her ear
Carina smiled
“I’m gonna get bloated and sore, everywhere,” Carina said
“And I’ll do my best to make you and our baby feel comfortable anyway, no matter what…” Maya said
Carina wrapped her arms around Maya’s shoulders, pulling her in for a passionate kiss again, she lifted her leg, trying to hook it around Maya’s hip
Maya pressed her hips forward even more,
Maya then tried to get a grip of the jumper, in a way to bring the sleeves off carina's shoulders, but Carina suddenly pushed at her shoulders
“Sit down” Carina said
“Let me help you take it off” Maya said
“I said sit down, liteunant,” Carina said, smiling.
So Maya did as she was ordered, sitting at the edge of the bed, and taking off her t-shirt immediately
Carina’s eyes glazed over with lust, she then got out of the boots first Maya watched eagerly, the creamy skin between her breasts, and whatever the opened zipper allowed her to see, was all too enticing. Maya wanted her wife so bad right now.
Carina made a show of pulling the zipper down to just right above her pubic area
And then slowly removed one sleeve at a time, letting the jumper fall back, her upperbody bare. Her lower-half still covered.
“Holy shit…” Maya exclaimed softly, her gaze fixed on Carina’s bare chest now.. her creamy skin was always such a delight to look at, to touch...
Carina stepped closer, until she was standing between Maya’s knees. Maya was looking up at her, Carina caressed her face, and then Maya looked forward at her tummy, and softly began to kiss there
Carina let her hand wander into Maya’s hair, playing with her soft blonde tresses, as Maya made love to her waist
Maya’s kisses were reverent… like she was worshipping Carina’s body… Carina closed her eyes… she knew what Maya was doing.
Maya was all too moved at the idea of there being a life inside her… a life created by the two of them. A piece of them…
And after a few moments, Maya finally reached up and fondled Carina's breast
Carina gasped
“Can I take the rest off?” Maya asked
“Do what you wish with me” Carina finally said
Maya slowly pulled the zipper down lower, the lowest it could go, trailing kisses down the revealed skin
And when her lips pressed against Carina’s abdomen, inching closer to her pubic area, she gripped the back of Maya’s hair, holding her head back
Maya chuckled.
Maya put her hands on Carina’s hips, looked up at her, and then slowly pulled the sides to get the jumper lower down her hips
And as Carina grew more and more naked before Maya, Maya felt her heart swell. She had so much love and adoration for this woman, this woman she gets to call her wife. And the mother of their children.
“Did you know a woman’s hip bones expand and shift to make room for a baby during pregnancy….” Carina said, a smile on her face
Maya helped her get her legs out of the jumper, and then kissed her hip bones reverently
“So I’ve read” she said, smiling into her wife’s skin…
Maya grazed her hand over Carina’s lower belly again
“What are you thinking?” Craina asked, her finger reaching under Maya’s chin, to tilt her head up, to look at her
“Our baby is in there.” Maya said, her eyes sparkling
Carina chuckled, she slowly crawled onto Maya’s lap, straddling her lap, her knees on either side of Maya
Maya’s breath caught in her throat, even after all these years, a naked Carina still had the power to render her speechless
Maya put her arms around her,
“True” Carina said
Maya brushed her lips against Carina’s, a soft kiss
“A baby we created… you and me…” Maya said
Carina nodded, smiling, she put her arms around Maya’s shoulders and slowly started to kiss with more intensity.
Maya followed suit, her hands quickly moving soothingly along Carina’s bare back
Their lips stayed united in a passionate kiss, hands explorative, breaths mingled, bodies trying to stay close enough to feel as one
And then suddenly, Carina felt Maya shift. It was like a jerk in her body…
Carina’s eyes opened a bit, but Maya was still kissing her, eyes still closed. So Carina tried to lose herself in the kiss again, and then she felt Maya’s body shake with a sob,
Carina pulled away a little, and Maya immediately looked down, unable to meet Carina’s eyes
“Bambina?” Carina called out softly, her features etched with worry,
“Bambina, what’s wrong?” Carina asked gently, her heart suddenly felt weird, why was Maya crying… was she overwhelmed? was it a good kind of cry? or something else?
“There’s something I need to tell you…” Maya said
Carina moved some of Maya's hair behind her ear
“Hey… hey…” Carina cooed at her, got off her lap, and onto the bed beside her,
“Come here” Carina tugged at her, until they were both lying in bed, Carina pulled Maya close to her chest, cuddling her, and Maya cried into her skin…
It scared Carina. What was going on? What was on Maya’s mind?
“Bambina, I’m here, whenever you’re ready to tell me what’s on your mind… okay?”
“I almost died today” Maya said then, into Carina’s skin, softly.
“Bambina…” Carina shivered as she thought about it. Pictured it. A cold feeling going through her veins at the idea.
“I don’t… didn’t want to scare you… and then you told me about the pregnancy… and I just… I didn’t want to ruin the mood…”
“Maya… what happened?” Carna was desperate to know
But even before Maya could say anything, Carina pressed her lips against Maya’s forehead, and if Maya thought Carina couldn’t hold her closer, she was wrong. Somehow they were wrapped even tighter together now.
Carina didn’t care that she was completely naked under their covers, and Maya was partially so.
All Carina could think of now, was there had been a chance her Maya would not have been here in this bed with her tonight…
Tears formed in her eyes at the thought, and she was glad Maya couldn’t see her face at this moment. maya needed a stong presence right now.
“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you earlier…” Maya said
“Are you okay, bambina?” Carina asked then
“I’m fine, I’m here” Maya said, her hand moving down Carina’s back soothingly.
“No.. that’s not what I mean, bambina…”
“I’m okay… I was a little shaken up earlier, but I’m okay… ever since I saw you at the hospital, I’m feeling better…” Maya admitted
Carina nodded, her hand coming up to softly play in Maya’s hair, comfortingly
Maya narrated slowly, the events from the wildfire, how she found herself surrounded by flames, flames that were closing in on her from all sides eventually, how she cried out for Andy’s help, how her team gathered to help,
How Andy gave her hope, by telling her to think about everything she had to look forward to.
And Maya told her wife, about what she pictured… Carina in labour, or herself in labour. At the time, she had no clue that Carina was already pregnant.
Carina kissed atop Maya’s head again and again, even as Maya narrated it all, and when she was done, Carina pulled back a little, to look at her wife's face.
Their eyes met, teary, and scared.
“You’re safe” Carina whispered to her now
Maya nodded. “I know” she said
“I’m sorry… we were supposed to be celebrating…” Maya said
“Shhhh” Carina said, nodding no. “Our baby will still be here tomorrow,” Carina said, caressing her wife’s face
“What you went through today was… scary. Traumatic even…” Carina said
Maya’s eyes got teary again.
Carina was staring into her eyes, with a look of pure fear
“I didn’t mean to scare you…” Maya said
Carina smiled sadly “From the day I first laid eyes on you, my firefighter-bambina, I knew I was going to spend my life constantly worried for you…”
“I’m sorry” Maya said, smiling sadly back
“No… I chose you. And I choose you still. Everyday. You’re a hero, bambina. I see it. Nineteen sees it. All of Seattle knows it. And soon, our children will know it too. Because you my love, will always fight to come home… I know that.”
Maya nodded. Because it’s what she did today too. She knew in her heart, that if it came down to it, she would jump through the flames, not caring if she had to get burnt for it, but she would do it, for a chance to come back to her wife and her son.
Maya kissed Carina then, wildly, life-assuringly.
And Carina kissed back with equal fervour
