Chapter 1: The Return

Chapter Text

The blue-eyed, blonde-haired beauty walked away from her. Collapsing back on the bed, she watched as the other girl sauntered away. She didn’t want to look but she was compelled to watch as her heart shattered. This couldn’t be the end, she had to do something.

“Stay,” she choked out.

The blonde stopped in her tracks, but only for a split second.

“Please, don’t go,” she spoke louder as she sat up.

“Give me a reason,” the blonde responded.

“Because Clarke,” she stopped herself before starting again. “Because I lo—”

“DON’T” Clarke turned quickly. “Don’t say anything you don’t mean just to keep me here, Lexa.”

Lexa shrank back into herself unsure of what to do next.

“My heart can’t take anymore of this,” Clarke turned back around. “This is the last time.”

“Can we at least be friends?” Lexa whispered.

“Maybe one day,” Clarke opened the door. “Maybe when it no longer hurts to hear your voice.”
With that, Clarke walked out of the door and out of Lexa’s life.

“But I love you,” Lexa said into the cold silent air. For the first time in years, Lexa cried until she fell asleep.

5 Years Later

Lexa never overslept and she was never late. She didn’t ever forget to put gas in her car leading to her running out on the freeway and she surely never missed the morning meeting…until today.

Everything was off and felt wrong about today and Lexa couldn’t shake the feeling of uncertainty. She didn’t feel like a big bad CEO today, today she felt oddly like the insecure child she felt like deep inside. She felt raw and emotional in a way she hadn’t felt since—

No, she wouldn’t go down that road, not now. Not when she was finally doing so well in her life. Lexa had worked her ass off before she saved enough to start her own law firm. She was her own boss, which was lucky for her today considering she was now calling an emergency meeting to inform her employees about the case she should have briefed them on this morning while she was waiting on AAA.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Lexa raised her voice to get everyone’s attention. “I apologize for my absence this morning. I would not be calling this meeting if it weren’t important. So, let’s get to it.”

Lexa paused and looked over the room to make sure she had everybody’s attention. Once she was satisfied, she continued.

“As you all know, the verdict for the Wallace Incorporated trial has come in. Dante Wallace has received a guilty verdict on all 21 counts that he has been charged with thus far. He will likely appeal the verdict, so we need to be ready.” Lexa sat down as she finished addressing the room. “I don’t think I need to tell you how important it is that these charges stick, and he doesn’t get away with his crimes any longer.”

“What if he does? Get away with it,” Jasper squeaked out.

“We’ll cross that bridge, if we get to it.” Lexa adjusted her tie. “For now, we proceed as normal and get ready to file the last three suits against him. Everyone know what they need to do?”

A chorus of yes rang out into the air.

“Then let’s get back to work people,” Lexa smiled as she stood up to leave.

“Lexa,” Anya grabbed her shoulder. “Stay for a second please.”

Her assistant and best friend looked serious, so Lexa sat back down and waited for everyone to leave the room.

“What’s going on Anya,” Lexa sighed once everybody was gone. “It’s been a long morning and I have work I need to get done.”

“I wanted to warn you,” Anya hesitated.

“Warn me?” Lexa tilted her head in confusion.

“Ya,” Anya sucked in a breath. “Clarkes in your office.”

Lexa heard nothing else as she rushed out the conference room straight to her office. She had waited years to hear from the other woman. Stopping in front of her door, she was suddenly flooded with unwanted questions and feelings. How could she go in there after everything that happened? How could she act like the last 5 years hadn’t been the worst in her life? How could she pretend she wasn’t still in love with the other woman? How was she going to—

“Lexa?” Clarke sat on the couch waiting patiently. Lexa walked fully into the room subconsciously and now she stood in front of the woman that haunted her dreams looking as beautiful as ever. She looked no different than she did all those years ago. Everything was the same. Except…

“Are you pregnant?” Lexa blurted out. Her heart raced as she waited for the answer.

“Yes,” Clarke sighed.

Lexa closed her eyes and walked over to sit down in her chair. At times like this she wished she was still drinking.

“I need your help,” Clarke stood to take a seat in front of Lexa’s desk.

“You need my help? Lexa scoffed. “How could I possibly help you? How could you even come here pregnant, expecting me to drop everything for you?”

Lexa was beginning to feel rage she had never felt for the other girl, and it scared her. She craved a glass of whiskey desperately.

“Please, at least hear me out before you turn me away.” Clarke pleaded. When Lexa made no move to interrupt or leave the room, Clarke continued. “It’s not what it looks like. I know how that sounds but please listen.”

“Fine.” Lexa then pressed her intercom, “Anya please hold all my calls until further notice.”

“Thank you, Lexa.” Clarke smiled sadly. “I need help getting away from the father.”

Lexa stared blankly waiting for Clarke to continue.

“He’s not the guy I thought he was, and he’s been abusing me for the last couple of years. But I didn’t know how to get out of it.” Clarke dropped her head before continuing. “I thought at first maybe it was me or he was just stressed. It started off verbal but then I got pregnant and he—”

“He what,” Lexa shocked herself with the anger she let out. She calmed herself before continuing when she saw Clarke flinch. “He what, Clarke?”

“He threatened to do it himself,” Clarke started crying.

“Come with me,” Lexa stood up and grabbed Clarke by the hand rushing out of the office. “Anya, I’ll be out of the office for the rest of the day. Move all my meetings, this is an emergency.”

“Anything else,” Anya asked looking untrustingly at Clarke.

“Yes, look into” Lexa looked at Clarke.

“Bellamy Blake” Clarke picked at imaginary lint on her shirt. “Octavia’s older brother.”

Lexa felt like she was going to pass out. It was one thing for Clarke to have been dating a random guy: but Bellamy? How could he have done this to her even if they weren’t particularly close anymore.

“What do you need to know?” Anya asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Anything and everything you can find, start with Octavia.” Lexa nodded and walked out of the office with Clarke on her heels.

“Please Lexa, slow down, I’m pregnant remember.” Clarke waddled behind her.

“Not my fault,” Lexa mumbled bitterly.

“Excuse me,” Clarke stopped. “I don’t need your judgement, that’s not why I came to you.”

“Bellamy Blake,” Lexa growled out. “And why didn’t Octavia tell me? Or Lincoln?”

“They didn’t know,” Clarke admitted. “I don’t know why, but he didn’t want anyone to know. He said it made us more special to have something of our own.”

Lexa accepted Clarkes answer and slowed her pace as the younger woman followed behind her.

“Come on get in,” Lexa opened the passenger door for Clarke.

“Where are we going?” Clarke asked.

“My second home,” Lexa said. “Nobody will disturb us there.”
