Under the Carpet

Summary:

Ward and Lisa Cameron's tumultuous marriage is strained further by the arrival of their twins, Sarah and JJ, alongside their son, Rafe. Ward, who always longed for a daughter, lavishes all his love on Sarah, treating her like a princess, while neglecting JJ, whom he resents for being a boy. Their household, filled with constant fighting and chaos, becomes too much for Lisa to handle. In a desperate attempt to restore some semblance of peace, Lisa secretly decides to give JJ up for adoption to Luke, a man who has harbored secret feelings for her. Luke readily agrees, seeing this as a chance to be closer to Lisa.

Lisa fabricates a story, telling Ward that JJ succumbed to a severe illness while Ward was away on a work trip. Distraught but accepting, Ward focuses all his attention on Sarah and Rafe, unaware of the truth. Under Luke's care, JJ's life takes a dark turn. Luke, bitter and tormented by the reminder of the life he wished he had with Lisa, begins to abuse JJ. The child, a constant reminder of Luke's unfulfilled desires and heartbreak, suffers immensely in an environment filled with neglect and cruelty.

Or JJ and Sarah are long lost twins separated at age two. With lots of Jiara and Jarah but mainly Jiara.

Chapter Text

The air in the hospital room was thick with a mix of anxiety and anticipation as Lisa Cameron endured the final stages of labor. Ward stood by her side, his normally composed demeanor betraying hints of nervousness and excitement. They had prepared for this day for months, imagining the joy of welcoming twins into their lives.

Sarah was the first to enter the world, her cries echoing through the room like a symphony of new beginnings. She emerged strong and full of vigor, tiny fists flailing as if eager to explore her surroundings. Lisa's heart swelled with love and relief at the sight of her daughter, and Ward couldn't hide his beaming smile.

"Sarah Evangeline Cameron" Lisa whispered, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks as she held her newborn daughter for the first time. Ward leaned in close, pressing a gentle kiss on Lisa's forehead, overwhelmed with emotion.

But their joyous moment was soon tempered by the impending arrival of the second twin. Jesse James, unlike his sister, arrived into the world silently, his tiny form appearing fragile and delicate. The room seemed to hold its breath as the medical team worked swiftly to stabilize him. Lisa's heart clenched with worry, her eyes darting between her two newborns — one vibrant and crying, the other still and pale.

As Jesse James or just James was whisked away to the neonatal intensive care unit due to his precarious health, Ward's initial elation quickly turned to disappointment. A baby boy. He had hoped for another daughter, someone he could dote on and shower with love. This unexpected turn left him unsettled, though he tried to mask his feelings behind a façade of forced cheerfulness.

In the following days, Sarah thrived under the attentive care of Lisa and the hospital staff. She nursed eagerly, gained weight steadily, and quickly became the center of attention for visitors and well-wishers. Lisa spent hours marveling at her daughter's every movement, cherishing their bonding moments as she nursed Sarah and whispered sweet lullabies into her ear.

Meanwhile, James's early days were a stark contrast. His fragile health demanded round-the-clock monitoring and care, and Lisa found herself torn between her newborn daughter and her son fighting for survival in the NICU. Ward, unable to connect with James as he had with Sarah, distanced himself further. He rarely visited James in the NICU, choosing instead to spend his time with Sarah, inadvertently reinforcing the growing divide between the twins.

Sarah, even in her infancy, displayed a remarkable sense of protectiveness towards her twin brother. Whenever she was held close to James's incubator, her tiny fingers would reach out as if to comfort him. Rafe, their toddler son, took an instant liking to JJ. He would sit beside the incubator, babbling softly to his baby brother with a tenderness that belied his young age.

Lisa, torn between the needs of her twins and the emotional distance growing between Ward and James, found solace in her children's bond. She often marveled at how Sarah seemed to sense James's presence, her eyes lighting up whenever they were reunited after brief separations. It was as if their bond transcended mere sibling connection; it was a silent understanding that bound them together from the moment they were conceived.

Ward's disappointment in James's fragility only seemed to deepen over time. He struggled to understand his son's needs, viewing him through the lens of weakness and unworthiness. Lisa's attempts to bridge the gap between father and son often fell on deaf ears, as Ward busied himself with work and distanced himself emotionally from James's struggle for survival.

Arguments between Ward and Lisa became more frequent as they grappled with the complexities of raising twins under such challenging circumstances. Lisa pleaded for Ward to see James's potential beyond his illness, while Ward grew increasingly resentful of the additional strain James's condition placed on their already strained family dynamics.

The first few months passed in a haze of emotions — joy, fear, hope, and sorrow intermingling in the Cameron household. Sarah and James's bond grew stronger with each passing day, their connection a beacon of light amidst the stormy seas of their parents' tumultuous relationship. As the twins approached their first birthday, their futures remained uncertain, their paths intricately woven together yet destined to diverge in unforeseen ways.

As the years passed Sarah and James celebrated their second birthday, the contrast in their treatment became increasingly apparent to James. He watched with a child's keen observance as Ward lavished attention on Sarah, presenting her with a beautifully wrapped gift that elicited squeals of delight from his beloved daughter. Meanwhile, he stood by, forgotten in the shadow of his sister's joy.

Confusion and hurt welled up inside him as he struggled to comprehend why his father's affection seemed reserved solely for Sarah and Rafe. He couldn't articulate the feeling gnawing at his young heart, but the ache was palpable as he looked up at Lisa with questioning eyes.

"Mama," he finally voiced his confusion in a small, trembling voice, tears brimming in his eyes. "Why doesn't Daddy love me like he loves Sarah and Rafe?"

Lisa's heart shattered into a thousand pieces at her son's innocent question. She knelt down, enveloping her son in a tight embrace, her fingers gently brushing through his tousled hair. "Oh, sweetheart," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Daddy loves you very much. He just... has a different way of showing it sometimes."

But James, though young, was perceptive beyond his years. He sensed the undercurrents of tension that rippled through their household like a brewing storm. He knew the sting of Ward's dismissive glances, the lack of warmth in his rare interactions. It hurt in a way he couldn't quite articulate.

Rafe, at eight years old, had taken on a protective role over his baby brother. He noticed James's sorrow and rallied around him with fierce loyalty. Whenever Ward's attention waned, Rafe would swoop in, offering James his favorite toys or sneaking him extra cookies when Lisa wasn't looking. Sarah, too, showed unwavering devotion to her twin, holding Jamea's hand and whispering reassuring words whenever he felt lost in the shadows of their father's neglect.

Lisa, caught in the middle of her children's conflicting needs and emotions, found herself increasingly at odds with Ward. Their arguments escalated from whispered disagreements to heated confrontations that echoed through the walls of their once-harmonious home. Lisa pleaded for Ward to see James's inherent worth, to acknowledge his vulnerabilities and strengths alike. Ward, stubborn and prideful, hardened his heart against his son, viewing him as a reminder of disappointments and unmet expectations.

The day of their second birthday party was a poignant culmination of these tensions. Ward had meticulously planned a celebration for Sarah, oblivious or perhaps indifferent to the fact that it was also his son's special day. As the festivities unfolded, Sarah's laughter rang through the house, her eyes sparkling with joy as she unwrapped her gifts.

James watched silently from the sidelines, a hollow ache settling in his chest as he realized he wasn't even an afterthought in his father's mind. His eyes filled with unshed tears, his small shoulders slumping under the weight of rejection.

Rafe, ever perceptive, noticed James's crestfallen expression. With a solemn determination, he took his brothers hand and led him to a corner of the room away from the festivities. "Don't worry, bro," Rafe whispered softly, his voice tinged with a mix of sadness and fierce protectiveness. "You're the best brother anyone could ask for. We love you."

Sarah, too young to fully grasp the complexities of their family dynamics, toddled over to JJ and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. "Happy birthday, Jay!" she exclaimed, planting a sloppy kiss on his cheek.

Lisa's heart shattered anew as she watched her children rally around James, shielding him from the hurt that threatened to consume him. She exchanged a pained glance with Ward across the room, their eyes reflecting the fractured state of their once-united front.

Later that evening, after the guests had left and the house grew quiet, Lisa found herself standing in the dimly lit hallway outside James's room. She could hear muffled sobs emanating from within, the sound of her son's heartache breaking hers in return.

Inside, James lay curled up in his bed, tears streaming down his cheeks as he clutched a small toy car Rafe had given him earlier. Lisa sat down beside him, brushing his hair back gently and murmuring soothing words of comfort.

"Mommy," JJ whispered, his voice trembling with raw vulnerability. "Why doesn't Daddy love me?"

Lisa's heart shattered all over again. She pulled JJ into her arms, holding him close as she struggled to find the right words. "Oh, sweetheart," she murmured, her own tears mingling with his. "Daddy... Daddy has his own way of showing love. But you are so loved, Jay. Never doubt that."

As she rocked her baby back and forth, the weight of their family's discord hung heavy in the air. The road ahead seemed fraught with challenges, uncertainties looming on the horizon. But in that tender moment, mother and son found solace in each other's embrace, their bond a testament to the resilience of love in the face of adversity

As some months passed Lisa's return from her work trip was met with a scene that chilled her to the core. As she drove up the familiar driveway, her heart sank at the sight of Ward and Sarah playing happily in the yard. The air should have been filled with the laughter of their children, but instead, a heavy silence hung over the house like a shroud.

Rafe, usually the first to greet her with a hug and a smile, stood by the door to James's room, his face streaked with tears of frustration and worry. Lisa's pulse quickened as she rushed towards him, her mind racing with dread. Something was terribly wrong.

"W-ward locked Jay in his room," Rafe choked out, his voice trembling with emotion. "He's been crying and crying, Mom. I can't get the door open."

Lisa's hands shook as she fumbled for the key, her heart pounding in her chest. Her maternal instincts screamed at her, urging her to hurry, to reach her baby boy who needed her desperately.

Finally, the door yielded to her frantic efforts, swinging open with a creak that echoed through the silent hallway. Lisa's breath caught in her throat as she stepped into the dimly lit room, her eyes falling on JJ's crib in the corner.

What she saw next would haunt her nightmares for years to come.

His tiny form lay curled up in his crib, his small body shaking uncontrollably. His cheeks were streaked with tears, his chest heaving with the effort of his sobs. The room was cold, the winter air seeping through the cracks in the window. James's diaper was overflowing and soiled, evidence of neglect that twisted Lisa's gut with fury.

"Jay!" Lisa cried out, her voice breaking as she rushed to his side. But as she reached out to comfort him, James recoiled in fear, his cries escalating into panicked screams. He was burning with fever, his skin flushed and clammy to the touch. His breathing was labored, each breath a struggle against the invisible weight crushing his tiny chest.

"Stay 'way!" JJ shrieked, his voice hoarse with terror. "Don't touch me!"

Lisa's heart shattered into a million pieces. She had never seen James like this — so terrified, so broken. She fought against her own tears as she desperately tried to calm him, to reassure him that she was there to help. But he pushed her away, his small frame trembling with fear and confusion.

Rafe stood frozen in the doorway, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he watched his baby brother suffer, helpless to ease his pain. Sarah, sensing the tension and fear in the room, toddled over to James's crib, her eyes wide with concern.

"Dad!" Rafe called out, his voice breaking with anger and desperation. "Dad, please come!"

But Ward remained outside, unmoved by his son's cries. His indifference cut through Lisa like a knife. She turned to him, her voice cracking with fury. "Ward, how could you? How could you lock him in here like this? He's sick, he's terrified, and you... you didn't even care!"

Ward's expression hardened, his jaw clenched stubbornly. "He's fine," he muttered dismissively. "He's just being difficult, like always."

Lisa's chest tightened with rage. "He's not fine, Ward! Look at him!" she shouted, gesturing towards her son, who continued to cry and hyperventilate in his crib.

Finally, Ward relented, stepping into the room with an air of resignation. He glanced briefly at James, his face a mask of indifference. "Fine, take care of him then," he muttered, turning on his heel and stalking out of the room.

Lisa gathered James into her arms, heedless of his protests, and carried him out into the warmth of the living room. She cradled him close, murmuring soothing words and pressing kisses to his feverish forehead. Sarah clung to JJ's side, her small hand reaching out to touch his cheek in a gesture of comfort.

Rafe hovered nearby, his eyes red-rimmed with tears of frustration and sadness. "I'm sorry, Jay," he whispered hoarsely. "I tried to help you."

Lisa held her baby close, her heart breaking for her son's suffering. She rocked him gently, whispering promises of love and protection, vowing silently that she would never let him feel abandoned or neglected again.

As the hours passed, James's fever slowly subsided under Lisa's loving care. He drifted into a fitful sleep, exhausted from his ordeal but comforted by the warmth and security of his family's embrace.

In the aftermath of that harrowing day, the fractures in their family seemed irreparable. Lisa's love for her children burned brighter than ever, a fierce flame of maternal devotion that would shield them from any storm. But the scars of neglect and indifference ran deep, leaving wounds that would take more than time to heal.

The aftermath of the traumatic incident with Ward left Lisa and Rafe even more protective of James. They were determined to shield him from any harm, physical or emotional, that might come his way. Sarah, especially, became her twins constant shadow, never straying far from his side.

From the moment he woke until he drifted off to sleep, Sarah and Rafe were there, attending to his every need. They insisted on helping Lisa bathe him, gently washing his delicate skin and coaxing hesitant smiles from him with their playful antics. Sarah, despite her discomfort in the cramped crib, insisted on sleeping beside James every night, her arms wrapped protectively around him as if to shield him from nightmares and the lingering trauma of being locked in his room.

Mealtimes became a family affair, with Sarah and Rafe eagerly spooning pureed foods into James's mouth, celebrating each swallow as a triumph over his previous struggles. They cheerfully changed his diapers, sharing whispered secrets and silly faces to keep him entertained, even when he was too weak to smile back.

Playtime was another cherished activity for the siblings. Sarah and Rafe eagerly shared their toys with their baby brother, introducing him to colorful blocks and plush animals, patiently teaching him how to stack and sort with the same enthusiasm they once reserved for themselves. They would sit in a circle on the nursery floor, Sarah and Rafe on either side of James, guiding his hands as he explored new textures and shapes with wide-eyed wonder.

Despite their physical similarities as twins, Sarah looked significantly older and larger than JJ to the point their own parents would sometimes forget they were the same age. Her protective instincts seemed to stem not just from sibling love but from a maternal urge to care for her brother. She would gently wipe away his tears, stroke his hair soothingly, and whisper comforting words into his ear when he woke from fitful sleep.

Rafe, too, became fiercely protective of his baby brother. He would stand guard whenever visitors came to the house, his small frame puffed up with pride as he ensured James’s toys were not taken without permission. Rafe's protective nature, combined with his animated laughter, filled the room with joy.

Meanwhile, Lisa wrestled with her own feelings of guilt and helplessness. She watched her children with a mixture of pride and concern, marveling at the bond between Sarah, Rafe, and James that only grew stronger with each passing day. However, she couldn't ignore the reality of Ward's neglect and indifference towards their son, which continued despite the traumatic incident.

Late at night, when the house was quiet and her thoughts were her only companions, Lisa found herself considering a painful decision. She couldn’t bear to see her baby suffer any longer under Ward’s neglect. The idea of giving James up to Luke, who had always harbored a deep affection for her, began to take root in her mind. It tore at her heart to think of separating JJ from his siblings, but she couldn’t shake the belief that Luke could provide a loving and stable environment that Ward seemed incapable of offering.

Lisa kept her thoughts to herself, unsure of how to broach such a devastating topic with anyone, especially Sarah and Rafe, who had become James’s unwavering protectors. She feared their reaction, knowing they would not easily understand or accept the idea of their brother leaving their family.

As days turned into weeks, Lisa’s internal struggle intensified. She observed Luke from a distance, noticing the genuine care and concern he showed towards James whenever he visited. Luke seemed to understand her baby in a way that no one else did, offering him quiet reassurance and a sense of security that Ward’s presence could not provide...

One evening, as she sat alone in the nursery with JJ fast asleep in Sarah’s arms, Lisa found herself at a crossroads. Tears blurred her vision as she gently stroked JJ’s cheek, overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness and sorrow. She whispered silent apologies to her sleeping son, promising him that whatever decision she made would be in his best interest.

“I love you, JJ,” Lisa murmured softly, her voice choked with emotion. “I just want what’s best for you.”

With those whispered words, Lisa made a solemn vow to herself and to JJ. She would find the courage to confront her fears and make a decision that would protect him from further harm, even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness in the process.

In the few similar fics he's always the oldest I think he deserves some tlc after everything he's been through, plus Sarah would be an amazing big sister. Or I was thinking that instead of them being twins, maybe Sarah could be older than him by like a year and a half. And Ward wanted another girl but instead JJ was born idk, you tell me. Chapter Text

In the weeks following the night she found James locked in his room, Lisa Cameron began to notice unsettling changes in her son. At first, she dismissed them as the aftermath of the trauma he had endured, but as time passed, the differences in James’s behavior became too stark to ignore.

James, who had once been a lively and affectionate child, now moved through their home like a shadow. His voice, once filled with the babbling curiosity of a two-year-old, was now a rare sound, only surfacing when directly spoken to. The silence weighed heavily on Lisa’s heart, each wordless moment a painful reminder of her son's suffering.

Ward’s behavior towards James had never been warm, but after the incident, it had grown even colder. He barely acknowledged James’s presence, his attention focused entirely on Sarah and Rafe. While Ward showered Sarah with affection and took Rafe on fishing trips and other bonding activities, James was left to navigate his small world alone.

One day, as Lisa prepared breakfast, she noticed James sitting quietly at the table, his eyes downcast. She placed a plate of food in front of him and gently ruffled his hair. “Good morning, sweetheart,” she said softly, hoping for a flicker of the old James to return. But James simply nodded, muttering a barely audible “Morning, Mama” before turning his attention back to his plate.

It wasn’t just James’s silence that troubled Lisa. He had stopped crying all together. She recalled the night she returned from her work trip and found him screaming in terror. Since then, there had been no tears, no outbursts. James had become eerily compliant, never asking for anything, never expressing his needs or wants. Even when he struggled with tasks, he stubbornly tried to manage on his own, his small hands fumbling with toys or food, refusing any offers of help.

Lisa’s heart broke when she saw him withdrawing from his siblings. Rafe and Sarah, who had always been so protective and loving, found themselves shut out. James no longer sought comfort in Rafe’s arms or cuddles from Sarah. He avoided playtime, preferring to sit alone in a corner with a blank expression. The once inseparable bond between the twins seemed to be unraveling.

Rafe and Sarah were at a loss, their young hearts aching to reconnect with their brother. Rafe, in particular, felt a deep sense of responsibility. He would hover near James, trying to engage him with toys or gentle hugs, but James would gently push him away, his eyes filled with a quiet sadness. Sarah, too, tried to reach out, crawling into the crib at night only to find James curling away from her touch.

One evening, Lisa found James struggling to put on his shoes. His small hands trembled as he tried to tie the laces, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Let me help you, James,” Lisa offered, kneeling beside him. But James shook his head, his voice a whisper. “No, Mama. I can do it.”

Tears stung Lisa’s eyes as she watched him struggle. “It’s okay to ask for help, sweetheart,” she said, her voice trembling. But James remained silent, his focus on the task at hand. When he finally managed to tie the laces, he stood up and walked away without a word, leaving Lisa kneeling on the floor, her heart heavy with worry.

The final blow came one afternoon when Ward returned home early from work. He found James playing quietly in the living room, his small frame hunched over a set of building blocks. Without a word, Ward walked past him, ruffling Sarah’s hair and pulling Rafe into a rough hug. James looked up, his eyes briefly lighting up with hope, but when Ward continued to ignore him, the light faded, replaced by a familiar resignation.

Lisa watched from the kitchen, her heart breaking for her son. She knew she had to do something, but the thought of giving James up filled her with a deep, paralyzing fear. How could she let go of her child, her flesh and blood? And yet, seeing him suffer under Ward’s neglect and indifference tore her apart.

That night, as Lisa lay in bed, she began to formulate a plan. She couldn’t bear to see James grow up in a home where he was unloved and unwanted. The idea of giving him up to Luke resurfaced in her mind. Luke had always been kind to her, and despite his own struggles, he had a stable job and a quiet home. Perhaps James would be better off with him, away from the toxic environment that was slowly breaking his spirit.

Lisa’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of soft footsteps. She looked up to see Sarah standing in the doorway, clutching her teddy bear. “Mama, can I sleep with you?” she asked, her voice small and timid.

Lisa nodded, lifting the covers and allowing Sarah to crawl into bed beside her. As she held her daughter close, Lisa’s resolve hardened. She had to protect her children, all of them. But how could she make such a heart-wrenching decision?

As Sarah drifted off to sleep in her arms, Lisa stared at the ceiling, her mind racing. She knew that giving James up would be the hardest thing she’d ever have to do, but if it meant giving him a chance at a happier life, she would find the strength to do it. For now, she would continue to care for him, love him, and shield him from Ward’s neglect. But the plan was forming, and Lisa knew that soon, she would have to make the hardest decision of her life.

In the quiet darkness of the night, Lisa vowed to do whatever it took to ensure James’s happiness, even if it meant breaking her own heart.

The next morning as the sun was setting, casting long shadows across the Cameron household as Rafe nervously approached his mother. Lisa was in the kitchen, preparing dinner, her movements mechanical and her thoughts far away. She hadn’t been the same since she made the heart-wrenching decision to give James up, but she knew she had to keep up appearances.

“Mom?” Rafe’s voice was small, hesitant. He shuffled his feet, not quite meeting her eyes.

Lisa looked up, forcing a smile. “Yes, sweetheart? What’s on your mind?”

Rafe took a deep breath, his hands twisting nervously in front of him. “I… I’ve been worried about James. He’s not the same anymore.”

Lisa’s heart clenched at the mention of James’s name, but she maintained her composure. “What do you mean, honey?”

“It’s just… he used to be so happy, even with everything going on. But now, he’s always quite and emotionless, and he looks so sad. I miss taking care of him, Mom. Changing his diapers, cuddling him, feeding him, putting him to bed, playing with him… I miss it all.”

Lisa felt tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. “I know, Rafe. It’s been hard on all of us.”

Rafe hesitated, glancing around as if he was afraid someone might overhear. “Mom, I have to tell you something... When you’re gone to work… Dad… he doesn’t take care of James. Sometimes after breakfast he goes to the yard to play with Sarah and forgets Jay on his highchair all day until I get home after school to take him out, he doesn’t change his diapers or feed him. He ignores him, and sometimes he blames him for you not paying more attention to Sarah.”

Lisa’s blood ran cold. “What do you mean, Rafe? What has he been saying?”

Rafe’s voice dropped to a whisper. “He makes snarky comments, like ‘Maybe if you weren’t such a burden, your mom would have time for Sarah’ or ‘You’re the reason she’s always so stressed.’ It’s like he hates him, Mom. And when James does cry, he just yells at him to shut up.”

Lisa’s heart ached, both for James and for Rafe, who had witnessed such cruelty. She knelt down to his level, pulling him into a tight hug. “Thank you for telling me, Rafe. I’m so sorry you had to see that. We’re going to figure this out, okay?”

As they sat down to dinner that evening, the tension in the air was palpable. Ward’s demeanor was as cold as ever, his eyes hard and unyielding. Lisa tried to keep the conversation light, but every glance at James, who sat quietly in his high chair, broke her heart a little more.

James, sensing the unease, was unusually quiet, picking at his food with little interest. Sarah sat beside him, trying to cheer him up with small smiles and gentle touches, but even she seemed subdued.

Ward’s gaze flickered towards James, and a sneer curled his lips. “James, stop playing with your food and eat. Or is that too difficult for you?”

James flinched, his small body tensing. Lisa’s hand tightened around her fork, but she forced herself to stay calm. “Ward, he’s just a baby. He’s doing his best.”

“Doing his best?” Ward scoffed. “All he does is whine and make messes. Maybe if he wasn’t so spoiled, he’d be more manageable.”

Rafe, unable to stay silent any longer, looked up from his plate, his eyes burning with anger. “Dad, that’s not fair! He’s just a baby. He needs our help, not our anger.”

Ward’s eyes narrowed at Rafe. “Stay out of this, Rafe. You don’t understand what it’s like to have responsibilities.”

Lisa couldn’t take it anymore. “Ward, enough. James is our son. He deserves our love and care, not our contempt. You can’t treat him like this.”

Ward slammed his hand on the table, making everyone jump. “I can treat him however I see fit, Lisa. Maybe if you weren’t so busy coddling him, you’d see that he’s the reason this family is falling apart.”

Tears welled up in Lisa’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “This family is falling apart because we’re tearing each other down instead of building each other up. James is innocent in all of this. He didn’t ask for any of it.”

Ward’s face twisted with anger, but he said nothing, pushing back from the table and storming out of the room. The sound of the door slamming echoed through the house, leaving a heavy silence in its wake.

Lisa took a shaky breath, turning her attention back to her children. “I’m so sorry you had to hear that,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “We’re going to figure this out, I promise.”

Rafe and Sarah exchanged worried glances, their young faces marked with concern and confusion. James, too young to understand the full extent of the conflict, looked up at his mother with wide, tear-filled eyes.

Lisa reached out, gently stroking his cheek. “It’s going to be okay, my sweet boy. I’m going to make sure of it.”

That night, after the children were in bed, Lisa sat alone in the living room, her mind racing. She couldn’t let this continue. She had to protect James, no matter what it took. The decision she had been dreading was now staring her in the face, and she knew she had no choice.

With a heavy heart, Lisa picked up the phone and dialed Luke’s number. The line rang, and when he answered, she took a deep breath.

“Luke, it’s Lisa. I need to talk to you about James. It’s time. Can you come over tomorrow?”
_____________________________________

The morning sun cast a soft glow through the Cameron household, illuminating the quiet tension that hung in the air. Lisa had spent a sleepless night wrestling with her decision, and now, as she watched Luke settle into the living room, she felt a mix of apprehension and determination.

"Luke," Lisa began, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her, "thank you for coming."

Luke nodded, his expression gentle yet concerned. "Of course, Lisa. I'm here for you. What's on your mind?"

Lisa took a deep breath, her gaze dropping momentarily before meeting Luke's eyes with unwavering resolve. "It's about James," she started, using his full name for emphasis, as if to reaffirm his identity. "He's... he's not doing well here, Luke. Ward, my husband, he's not treating James the way he should."

Luke's brow furrowed in concern. "What do you mean?"

Lisa recounted the painful truths she had been harboring, her voice tinged with sadness. "When I'm at work, Ward neglects James. He doesn't change his diapers or feed him. He blames James for me not paying enough attention to Sarah. And he makes hurtful comments about James being smaller and weaker than Rafe and Sarah, sometimes needing extra help."

Luke listened intently, his heart sinking with each word. He had sensed tension in the Cameron household, but he hadn't realized the extent of James's suffering. "I had no idea, Lisa. That's... that's heartbreaking."

Tears welled up in Lisa's eyes, her voice trembling slightly as she continued. "I can't let this continue, Luke. James deserves a loving and supportive environment. He needs someone who will care for him unconditionally."

Luke reached out and gently took Lisa's hand in his, offering her a reassuring squeeze. "And you think... you think that someone could be me?"

Lisa nodded, her tears now flowing freely. "Yes, Luke. I trust you. I know you care about me, and I believe you can give James the love and care he needs. Away from all this."

Luke was silent for a moment, his thoughts racing as he processed Lisa's request. Taking on the responsibility of caring for James was daunting, but his love for Lisa and his growing affection for James compelled him to consider it seriously.

Finally, he spoke, his voice filled with sincerity. "Lisa, I... I would be honored to take care of James. I care deeply about you, and I care about him too. I promise I'll do everything in my power to give him a good life."

Lisa let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, relief flooding through her. She squeezed Luke's hand gratefully. "Thank you, Luke. Thank you so much."

Luke pulled Lisa into a comforting embrace, holding her close as they both allowed their emotions to wash over them. In that moment, they shared a bond forged by love, empathy, and a shared determination to protect James from further harm.

As they pulled apart, Lisa wiped away her tears and managed a small smile. "I'll start making arrangements. We'll do this as quickly and smoothly as possible."

Luke nodded, his expression resolute. "I'm with you every step of the way, Lisa."

With a heavy heart but a renewed sense of hope for James's future, Lisa and Luke began to plan for the next steps. They knew it wouldn't be easy, but they were united in their resolve to give James the chance to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment, far away from the shadows of his tumultuous past.

And as they faced the challenges ahead together, Lisa dared to believe that she had made the right decision for her son's well-being, even if it meant facing the hardest goodbye of her life.

Notes:

Aren't JJ and Rafe adorable! Pleaseeeeee leave comments, need to know if people is liking this and I'm begging you all to leave ideas because at some point I'll need help and the more comments, the faster I write. And again, I apologize if there's some misspelling or something that doesn't make sense, English isn't my first language.

Btw if someone wants to write something similar, please do, that's why I actually started writing this. How do you feel about JJ being the youngest? In the few similar fics he's always the oldest I think he deserves some tlc after everything he's been through, plus Sarah would be an amazing big sister. Or I was thinking that instead of them being twins, maybe Sarah could be older than him by like a year and a half. And Ward wanted another girl but instead JJ was born idk, you tell me. Please leave ideas, opinions and thoughts, I need validation and help.

Btw, thank you to the people that left kudos and commented, you have no idea how much it means for me :D

Chapter Text

Lisa led Luke into the kitchen, her mind racing as she prepared coffee for them both. The familiar motions of scooping coffee grounds and pouring water helped steady her, grounding her amidst the turmoil. Luke sat at the kitchen table, his gaze never leaving her, concern etched on his face. Once the coffee was ready, Lisa set the mugs down and took a seat across from him, her hands wrapped around the warm cup. She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before she spoke."Luke, I've thought long and hard about this. I don't see any other way. James is so small, so vulnerable, and he's being treated terribly by Ward. If I don't do something, I fear for his future.

"Luke nodded, his eyes filled with empathy. "What are you thinking, Lisa? How can I help?" Lisa looked down at her coffee, her voice trembling as she laid out her plan. "Ward is going on a work trip soon, and I plan to send Rafe and Sarah to a camp for a week. I'll tell them that James isn't going because he's feeling sick. That will give me some time alone with him."Luke listened intently, his brow furrowed as he took in her words. "And then what? "I'll spend Monday to Thursday with James, making sure he knows how much I love him, trying to create some good memories for him to hold on to," Lisa continued, her voice thick with emotion.

"Then, on Friday morning, you’ll come and take him. You’ll take him away from here, far enough that Ward or the kids won’t recognize him if they ever see him again."Luke’s eyes widened in shock. "You want me to take him away?"Lisa nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Yes. You said you have a job offer that would take you out of town for a couple of years, right? Take James with you. Keep him safe, give him the love and care he needs. He deserves a chance to grow up without fear."Luke reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "Lisa, are you sure about this? It's a huge step, and once it's done, there's no going back.""I'm sure," Lisa whispered, her voice firm despite her tears. "I've thought about it every night for weeks. It's the only way to save him from Ward's neglect and cruelty. I can't do it alone, Luke. I need your help."

Luke squeezed her hand, his expression resolute. "Alright. I'll do it. For James, and for you."Lisa let out a shaky breath, relief flooding through her. "Thank you, Luke. I don't know what I would do without you."They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their plan settling over them. Luke broke the silence first, his voice gentle but determined. "We'll need to prepare. I'll find a place in Charleston where we can stay low for a while. We'll change his appearance gradually, enough that he won't be recognizable when we come back."Lisa nodded, her mind racing with the logistics. "Yes, we'll need to be careful. I'll pack some of his things discreetly over the next few days, so Ward doesn't notice. And I'll make sure the kids are ready for camp without raising any suspicions."Luke squeezed her hand again, his gaze steady and reassuring. "We'll make it work, Lisa. James will be safe, and he'll have a chance at a better life."

As the days inched closer to Ward's work trip, Lisa began to put her plan into action. She knew every moment counted, and she had to be meticulous. She started spending more time with James, lavishing him with the love and attention he desperately needed. She told Rafe and Sarah to spend more time with their brother, emphasizing the importance of family bonds."Sarah, Rafe, why don't you play with James more? He looks up to you both so much," Lisa would say with a gentle smile, watching as the older siblings took her words to heart. They started including James in their games, sharing their toys, and even letting him join in their little adventures around the house. The bond between the siblings grew stronger, and for a moment, the household felt lighter. Lisa also began the careful process of transferring some of James's belongings to Luke's house.

She did it bit by bit, ensuring no one noticed the missing items. It started with a few toys, then clothes, his favorite pacifier, and even his highchair. Luke would discreetly take them during his visits, understanding the need for caution."Here's some of James's clothes," Lisa whispered one evening, handing Luke a small bag. "And this is his favorite blanket. He won't sleep without it."Luke nodded, his eyes filled with determination. "Don't worry, Lisa. I'll make sure he has everything he needs."Lisa also started giving Luke money, ensuring they could live comfortably once they were away. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to give James the best chance possible. The kids began to notice Lisa's unusual behavior, though they didn't suspect the full extent of her plan. Rafe, in particular, grew concerned. One evening, as Lisa was tucking him into bed, he hesitated before speaking."Mom, is everything okay?" Rafe asked, his brow furrowed with worry. "You’ve been acting... different."

"Lisa forced a reassuring smile, brushing a hand through his hair. "Everything's fine, sweetheart. I'm just trying to make sure everyone is taken care of." Rafe nodded slowly, not entirely convinced but not wanting to press further. He had noticed how much more time his mother was spending with James, how she seemed to be preparing for something. But he trusted her and hoped whatever she was doing was for the best. Ward, meanwhile, remained oblivious to the changes around him. He was too focused on his work and doting on Sarah to notice the subtle shifts in the household. Lisa was careful not to raise his suspicions, maintaining a façade of normalcy around him. One evening, as the family sat down for dinner, Lisa observed the dynamics at play. Ward paid little attention to James, his focus entirely on Sarah. She couldn't help but feel a pang of anger and sadness, knowing how much her son craved his father's affection."James, sit still," Ward snapped as James struggled in his highchair. "Why can't you be more like Sarah?"Lisa's heart ached at the harsh words. She reached over and gently adjusted James's chair, giving him a comforting smile.

"He's just excited, Ward. Let him be."Sarah, noticing the tension, reached over and took James's hand. "It's okay, James. You're doing great."James beamed at his sister's words, his small face lighting up with happiness. Lisa watched the interaction, feeling a mix of pride and sadness. She knew these moments would soon be memories, but she hoped they would carry James through the difficult times ahead as the days passed, Lisa continued her preparations, the weight of her decision pressing heavily on her shoulders. She spent as much time with James as possible, creating memories filled with love and warmth. She cherished every laugh, every cuddle, knowing that soon, he would be gone. One afternoon, while playing in the backyard, Lisa pulled Rafe aside.

"Rafe, I need you to promise me something."Rafe looked up at her, his eyes wide with curiosity. "What is it, Mom?" He asked. "Take care of Sarah when I'm not around, okay? And always remember how much I love you and James." Rafe nodded solemnly, sensing the seriousness in her tone.

"I promise, Mom. I'll take care of Sarah."Lisa hugged him tightly, tears brimming in her eyes. "Thank you, Rafe. You're such a good boy."With each passing day, Lisa's resolve grew stronger. She knew the path she had chosen was fraught with pain and uncertainty, but it was the only way to save James from a life of neglect and suffering. She clung to the hope that, one day, they would be reunited, and he would understand the love and sacrifice that had driven her to make this impossible choice.

The final week before Ward's work trip was filled with a mix of tension, sorrow, and careful planning. Lisa's heart was heavy with the weight of what she was about to do, but she knew deep down it was the only way to protect James from further neglect. As she sent Rafe and Sarah off to camp, she braced herself for the emotional turmoil ahead.

Day 1: Monday

Lisa woke early to prepare breakfast for the children. Rafe and Sarah were excited for camp, their chatter filling the kitchen with energy. James sat quietly at the table, his small hands clutching his favorite stuffed animal.

"Mommy, why can't I go with Rafe and Sarah?" James asked, confusion etched on his face.

Lisa knelt beside him, brushing a hand through his hair. "Sweetheart, you're not feeling well. Remember? You need to stay here with me."

James nodded slowly, his brow furrowed with concern. "But I want to go with Rafe and Sarah."

Lisa's heart broke at his words. "I know, baby. I wish you could too."

Rafe and Sarah finished their breakfast and rushed to pack their bags for camp. Lisa watched them with a heavy heart, knowing it would be their last morning together as a family.

Before leaving, Rafe and Sarah each hugged James tightly. "Take care, little buddy," Rafe said, ruffling his hair gently. "We'll see you soon."

Sarah kissed James on the cheek. "I'll miss you, James. Be good for Mommy, okay?"

James hugged them back, his eyes filling with tears. "I'll miss you too."

As Lisa watched them drive away with Luke, her heart clenched with grief. She wiped away tears, knowing she had to stay strong for James.

Day 2: Tuesday

The house felt eerily quiet without Rafe and Sarah. Lisa spent the day playing with James, trying to distract him from the absence of his siblings. They built forts out of blankets, read his favorite stories, and even baked cookies together.

But James couldn't shake the sadness in his eyes. "Mommy, when are Rafe and Sarah coming back?"

Lisa swallowed hard, her voice catching in her throat. "Not for a little while, sweetheart. But they'll be back before you know it."

James nodded slowly, his lower lip trembling. "I miss them."

Lisa pulled him into her arms, holding him close. "I know, baby. I miss them too."

Day 3: Wednesday

Ward's departure loomed large over the household. Lisa watched as he packed his bags, his movements hurried and distracted. He barely spared a glance for James, too preoccupied with his own thoughts.

As he headed for the door, Lisa's heart sank. "Ward, aren't you going to say goodbye to James?" She wanted to give him one last chance before sending James away forever, the chance to be his father one last time.

Ward paused, his brow furrowed in annoyance. "He's fine. I said goodbye to Rafe and Sarah already."

Lisa fought back tears as she watched him leave without another word. She turned to James, who was watching with wide eyes.

"Mommy, why didn't Daddy say bye to me?" James asked, his voice trembling.

Lisa knelt beside him, brushing a tear from his cheek. "I don't know, sweetheart. I think he was in a rush. But I'm here, and I love you very much."

James nodded silently, his small frame shaking with emotion. Lisa held him close, her heart breaking for the hurt in his eyes.

Day 4: Thursday

The day before James's departure arrived with a sense of impending finality. Lisa spent every moment with him, trying to create memories to carry him through the days ahead. They played games, went for walks in the park, and even had a picnic in the backyard.

But underneath the surface, Lisa's heart ached with grief. She watched James laugh and play, his innocence a stark contrast to the turmoil swirling around him.

As evening fell, Lisa tucked James into bed, her fingers lingering on his soft hair. "I love you so much, James," she whispered, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

James looked up at her with wide eyes. "I love you too, Mommy."

Lisa fought back tears, her voice thick with emotion. "You're my brave boy, James. Always remember that."

James nodded, his eyelids drooping with exhaustion. "Okay, Mommy."

Lisa sat by his side until he fell asleep, her heart heavy with the weight of what she was about to do.

Day 5: Friday

The morning of James's departure dawned clear and bright. Lisa dressed him carefully, her hands trembling as she packed the last of his things. Luke arrived early, his face solemn but determined.

"Are you ready, Lisa?" Luke asked softly, his gaze shifting to James, who clung to his mother's leg.

Lisa nodded, tears brimming in her eyes. "Yes. Take care of him, Luke. Please, keep him safe."

Luke reached out to gently take James's hand. "I will, Lisa. I promise."

James looked up at his mother, confusion and fear in his eyes. "Mommy?"

Lisa knelt down, pulling him into a tight hug. "Be brave, my sweet boy. You’re going on an adventure with Uncle Luke. He’ll take good care of you."

James clung to her, his small body trembling. "Are we going on an adventure, Mommy?"

Lisa’s heart broke at his question and his innocence. "Yes, my love. You and your Uncle Luke are going on an adventure together." Her voice broke.

"You're not coming? I don't wanna leave without you momma, I don't want to go." His lip trembled as he reached out his arms to her. It broke her heart.

"Be strong, baby. I love you so much, never forget that, okay?" Was as she could muster as she ran a hand through blond hair.

With one final kiss on his forehead, Lisa watched as Luke led James to the car. She stood in the doorway, tears streaming down her face as they drove away, taking her precious boy to a new life far from the pain and neglect he had known.

As the car disappeared from view, Lisa knew there was no turning back. She had made the hardest decision of her life, but she held onto the hope that it was the right one. For James, and for the future he deserved.

Chapter 4: PLEASE READ

Chapter Text

Guys, I'm sorry but I'm putting this fic up for adoption so if anyone wants to continue writing this, make their own version or whatever, go ahead, I don't even need credits. I would love to keep writing it myself but I just don't have time with school and life going on plus I have no idea how to continue it. But please please please someone adopt it!

I can even give some ideas from time to time and obviously will give my full support. The only thing I ask is Rafe not being a total asshole after finding out the truth and regretting how he treated JJ and Sarah, I'm a sucker for Rafe being sweet and soft, JJ being the baby of the family (because in my in my universe Wheezie doesn't exist), obviously flashbacks and exploring JJ not knowing how to finally have people genuinely caring for him and learning how to be loved even though he's the defensive jackass we all love. I can totally see JJ and Sarah being Irish twins tbh like by a year or two and Rafe hating Sarah so much because she's Ward's favorite child, plus her reminding him of his baby brother and then hating JJ because he's a pouge and again, reminding him of his "dead" brother (if that makes sense). I just need people caring for JJ plus loving the Sarah, Rafe and JJ siblings theory with I'm rooting for in the season 4 second part.

Do you think JJ will die this season? Do you think it's going to be the last season? Theories? Thoughts?

Pleaseeeeeee someone adopt this!

Notes:

English is not my first language. Please please pleaseeeeeee comment! It's what it keeps me going so I'm begging, and leave ideas of what you would like to read.
