Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

It was cold and quiet as Psyche sat outside on the porch, looking up at the sky.

It happened again.

The moon wasn’t in the sky.

Where was Artemis..?

Artemis. The Comet scoffed, clutching his left wing. He ran his hand over the gray feathers, feeling the gaps of where there were new ones growing in from his… habit of feather pulling. He sighed, grabbing his can of root beer and taking a small sip.

“Why’re you bein’ emo?” A voice drew him from his thoughts, Ego, his best friend. His brother. Psyche rolled his eye, turning to gaze at Ares.

“Why’re you being nosy?” He retorted, feigning a playful tone to mask his original feelings.

Ego rolled his eyes in return, sitting next to Icarus and flicking the bird-brain’s forehead, which earned him a weak chuckle.

Psyche felt eyes on him. Not like the usual eyes.

“What’s up with you?” Ares asked, continuing his words, “You’re so… sad? Angry? I can’t tell with you sometimes.”

The Traitor looked up at the lack of the Moon in the sky, and leaned against the Fool.

“Artemis is back in Apathy. And that means that I’m… gonna have to go back there. For the … 18th? 19th time? I lost count.. I.. I can’t keep doing this, Ares,” Icarus said, “I’m… I feel like giving up. Again.”

He stopped, feeling Ego’s hand rubbing his back, the Traitor’s eyes stinging with tears.

“.. I know, Icarus,” Ego said softly.

Psyche choked back a sob, although his body betrayed him, letting out a meek whimper.

“I wish I didn’t remember.”

“I know, Icarus.”

“… what do the stars look like..?”

Ego looked up at the sky, thinking about how to describe it.

“… They’re bright. The one constellation you like a lot.. Orion, I think..? It’s out tonight. And..”

Ego felt Psyche’s wing wrap around him, before he heard soft breathing.

“… G’night, bird-brain.” Ares said, picking up his brother and laying him down onto the couch.
