Megumi kept staring at the messages. They wanted nothing more than to see their girlfriend. Yuuji could’ve asked their mom to come over but Megumi was grounded. Over a stupid mark on a quiz, they couldn’t get it off their mind.
Yuuji didn’t know about it either. They usually told her everything but this was a little different. She always commented on how smart they were. It made their heart jump. Megumi didn’t want her to know they could mess up. A perfectionist is what they deemed themself.
Megumi began typing a sentence just to delete it. They could only imagine the anxiety that spiked up every time the chat bubble appeared and disappeared. Finally, they mustered the courage to send something.
sorry can’t today
The reply was instant.
:(
Megumi never felt more guilty in their life. Yuuji just wanted to see them. They threw their phone on the bed. Megumi dragged their hand through their hair. They wanted to scream. The silence in the room was too peaceful. Megumi felt like they were going to break within the next few seconds.
The sound of a phone vibrating came before that could even happen. They looked at the phone and it was Yuuji. Megumi swiped the accept call button.
“Hello?”
“What’s wrong?”
There goes sleeping it off. Not to mention, no greeting. Rude.
“I’m just tired.”
“Why are you lying?”
Because I’m worried you’ll think I’m stupid.
“Huh?”
“Nothing.”
“No, why would you think that?”
“Think what?”
“Did you seriously not hear yourself?”
Oh. Did Megumi say that out loud? They never wanted to rip their tongue out this badly.
“I’m grounded”.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I don’t really want to talk about it,” Megumi grumbled. They could hear shuffling from the other end of the line.
“Wow Megumi, I didn’t see you as the delinquent type.”
“What?”
Yuuji bubbled with laughter. “Babe, that’s really hot.”
“Ugh, you’re disgusting!” they groaned, only pushing more from her.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she said, catching her breath. They sneered but forgot Yuuji can’t even see them. “Can’t you like... sneak out or something?”
“Do you want me to get in more trouble?”
“N-No— but you’re stealthy.”
“How’d you make that conclusion?”
“You kinda scare me sometimes because I don’t know when you’re coming. Your footsteps are really light.”
One thing for sure, Megumi didn’t even know that. But they found it undeniably cute she picked up on that. How could they say no to her now?
“Okay, fine, I’ll sneak out.”
“Seriously?!” Megumi could hear her bouncing off the walls already.
“Don’t make me change my mind.”
“You won’t regret it, I’ll come over in a few hours!”
“Just be careful.”
“Megs, I’ll be fine!” she brushed off. “When have I ever hurt myself on my way to see you?”
“I can think of two different times.”
“Shut up.”
“Mhm... I love you.”
“I love you more,” Yuuji rushed to say before she hung up the phone.
This girl would be the death of Megumi.
They heard faint tapping against the window. It got dark pretty quick and Yuuji would’ve texted Megumi by now. The tap then turned into a knock. They decided to check it out despite their mind telling them to ignore it.
Megumi put their face up to the window and covered their peripheral vision. They jumped back when they saw Yuuji’s face. She gave one of her big smiles when she saw them. Megumi rolled their eyes and opened the window.
“Hi—”
They covered her mouth with their hand, “What the hell are you doing up here?”
Yuuji licked their hand to get rid of it. Megumi scrunched their face and wiped their hand on her arm. “Did you just lick me?”
“I’m rescuing you from the confines of your home,” she giggled, ignoring the question.
“You could get hurt,” they mumbled.
“Stop worrying about me, I got here safely didn’t I?”
“You’re annoying.”
“You know you love it.”
Megumi could feel that the wind picked up from earlier. They shivered through the comfortable sweater they put on.
“It’s pretty cold out there, want one of my hoodies?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”
Megumi stepped away from the window to grab the hoodie left on their bed. They slipped on a comfortable pair of shoes and made it back to the window. Yuuji took the hoodie from them, putting it on. It fit her like a glove.
“Are you bringing your phone?” Yuuji asked, helping Megumi climb through the window.
“No, parents have my location.”
“That’s fine, one phone is better anyway.”
The first thing Megumi found themself doing was looking towards the ground. Big mistake. Normally it seemed to be at an eye level but right now they felt like they were on a skyscraper.
“How are we getting down?” they asked, voice quivering.
“Easy, we jump.”
“You’re joking, right?” Megumi knew she most certainly wasn’t.
“We’ll be fine, I can even catch you.”
“I told you not to make me change my mind.”
“One time, for me?” she pouted with puppy eyes. If it were anyone else Megumi would’ve left. But it’s Yuuji and unfortunately they couldn’t resist.
“Fine.”
Yuuji threw punches in the air to show her excitement and stood up from her crouched position. Megumi lifted themself up and gripped the window sill to keep still. Yuuji rushed to the edge of the roof. She made Megumi really giddy inside or she could give them heart attacks. Today she must’ve chose a heart attack. Yuuji tripped over the edge and fell. It took all of Megumi not to gasp out loud and blow their cover, the fall was loud enough.
“Are you okay?” they shouted in a whisper.
“Yeah... just broke a nail.”
They pinched the bridge of their nose. So much for a we’ll be fine. Megumi could trust Yuuji in any other circumstance. But the thought of having her catch them was out of the question. If she was always getting hurt, who's to say the same won’t happen to Megumi.
“You’re good to jump now.”
“I think I want to stay here.”
“I don’t think you do.”
It’s true. They’ve been grounded for almost four days now, boredom consuming them immensely. Without thinking further, Megumi detached themself from the sill and moved to the edge. Their stomach dipped like they were on a rollercoaster. They crouched down and mentally counted to three. Megumi jumped down, this was the point of no return.
And to think they were dead with a million broken bones. Megumi was fine. They couldn’t see anything but they knew they were safe. Yuuji had them in her arms. They clung tightly to the borrowed hoodie.
After that, Megumi thinks they might have a fear of heights.
* * *
For Megumi’s first time sneaking out, their worry was surprisingly tame. They didn’t understand why they didn’t think of taking walks at this time in the first place. The night air brushed past them. Megumi felt alive for once. Yuuji being right by them made the experience livelier. Speaking of, they could feel her looking at them. That suspicion turned out to be correct.
“What?”
“I know you don’t want to talk about it, but I’m curious... why are you grounded?”
And the feeling of being alive died. It wasn’t Yuuji’s fault, she was being curious. It was time for Megumi to hear the worst from their own girlfriend.
“I got a bad mark on our most recent quiz. My mom wasn’t too happy so she grounded me.”
“Oh.”
“Oh?”
“Did you think I’d believe you’re stupid over that?”
“Maybe.”
“Why would I? He can’t teach properly,” Yuuji shrugged. “As a matter of fact, you’d make a better teacher.”
“You think so?”
“I know so.”
Megumi’s heart skipped at least eight beats. Yuuji knew all the right things to say. “Thank you.”
One of her hands cupped Megumi’s face. Yuuji turned it to the side to place a kiss on their cheek. “You’re welcome, smarty.”
The walk continued and in just a few steps, Megumi watched Yuuji drop from her view. They never understood the weird antics of hers. She got back up with something in her hand. Megumi felt a hand on her face again. Yuuji combed their hair behind their left ear and placed a flower there.
“There, it suits you. A pretty flower for a pretty girl!”
Megumi could faint right then and there. The angel looking over them must’ve blessed them a thousand times.
Yuuji linked their arms together and pulled Megumi to her side. “There’s a place I’d like to show you.”
“Show, don’t tell,” they smiled. She returned the smile and led the way.
In two minutes, they’re at a park. Different from their usual spot. Yuuji never left Megumi disappointed with any surprise of any sort. So it did confuse them when she stopped right in the middle of the park.
“Look!” she squeaked, pointing up to the sky.
It was a little brighter in this area. The moonlight cascaded the scenery from a certain angle above. All the stars looked so much clearer.
“Do you like it?”
“I love it.”
“I saw this a few months ago actually, I was just waiting for the right time to show you.”
“It’s really perfect.”
Yuuji sat on the ground and encouraged Megumi to do the same. They did so without hesitation. The ground was cold, the current temperature didn’t help. Fortunately, the heat radiating from each other would quickly warm them up.
Megumi leaned their head against Yuuji’s shoulder. Yuuji put an arm around Megumi’s shoulder and leaned her head on theirs. Both of them stayed in that position for a while.
“Your freckles remind me of constellations.”
“Do they?” Megumi asked, surprised. They removed their hand from her shoulder. Megumi turned to face her.
Yuuji hummed. She traced her finger across Megumi’s freckled cheek. Their heartbeat spiked up. “I should be an astronomer so I can name a galaxy after them.”
“Please shut up.”
“I’m serious! I wish I had freckles.”
“You’d probably hate yours like I hate mine.”
Yuuji poked Megumi’s nose. “You’re gorgeous with or without them but you should stop hiding them. I love the way they stand out on your face. And they complement your eyes.”
Megumi didn’t know Yuuji felt so strongly about freckles of all things. And her words made them consider their view on them. They loved Yuuji. Nothing would pull Megumi away from the sweet girl destined to be with them.
“What time is it?”
Yuuji checked her phone, “Almost 11:30, why?”
Well… one thing could.
“Holy shit!” Megumi yelled. They jumped up and walked in a circle.
“Oh please, you worry too much,” Yuuji yawned but followed in her footsteps, brushing the dirt off the back of her skirt.
“And you talk too much.”
“Hey!”
“Can you walk me home?”
“Of course I can,” Yuuji held her hand out for them to grab. Megumi intertwined their hands together.
No amount of time could define their relationship. The feeling isn’t physical but they could feel the sparks fly all the time. Megumi always loved being close to Yuuji.
She lightly swung their arms back and forth. Then Yuuji brought their hands up to kiss the back of Megumi’s. Instant butterflies. Megumi couldn’t contain themself any longer.
They let go of Yuuji’s hand, seeing her frown a little. Megumi placed both their hands on Yuuji’s cheeks, staring into her honey brown eyes. They’ve never seen a prettier shade of brown. Megumi leaned in and pressed their lips together, Yuuji immediately kissing back. She wrapped her arms around their waist to pull them closer. They could taste the flavor of strawberry from her chapstick.
Honestly, home could wait a minute longer.
