Majorine had no idea why she opened her window, the little pebbles knocked ever so gently against her window. She was supposed to be studying, Mr. Garrison had assigned an assessment for the class and Majorine had missed a few days of school; she needed to catch up. So why a smile formed when she heard light tappings from her right, she has no idea. Majorine also didn’t know why she got up out of her bean bag and walked towards the window.
It was sunset, so she understood why the knocking occurred. She walked towards the window and unlatched it, pushing it up so she could stick her head out. And of course, down below was none other than Kenny McCormick, with a smile on his face and a sunflower in hand. Majorine felt herself melt, she enjoyed seeing his dorky smile. And he never failed to bring her at least one gift when he visited. She leaned against her window frame, watching as Kenny looked for another small pebble. Her eyes softened, she always found it sweet how he tried finding the tiniest pebbles so as to not crack her window.
When he found one, he let out a slight audible noise, though she couldn’t piece together the words. Most likely an “oh yeah”, or “bingo”. Kenny put the sunflower on the ground, as he looked back up at her window. He looked at Majorine, a shade of red dusting his face as he realized she was looking at him. He waved at her before putting the pebble down and picking up the flower.
Majorine waved back before walking downstairs as quietly as she could be. Her father was asleep and if he caught her sneaking in a boy, Kenny specifically, he would be furious. When she reached the bottom of the stairs, she saw her mother conversing with Kenny. She smiled and sat on the steps, observing Kenny. She’d never admit it, but she saw his nervous habits; he’d attempt to pop his right hand’s knuckles, he wouldn’t switch unless someone mentioned it to him and he’d laugh and then start with the left hand. He also struggled with eye contact, so his eyes would linger around the face and not directly. And if he was really nervous he’d chew the inside of his mouth and look at his feet.
She learned more over the years however, those were just the major ones. She got up and walked to the door, her footsteps catching Kenny and her mother’s attention. Majorine smiled at her mom before hugging her, and then turning to Kenny. He had that sweet puppy look on his face, the soft smile and his eyes just watching Majorine. She felt special under his gaze, and she loved how people continuously told her “she had him hooked”, she’d argue it was the other way around.
“You know the rules, Major.”
Majorine giggled as she reached her hand out for Kenny, his body instinctively reacting and holding her hand. She missed the warmth of his palm, so she couldn’t help but look away as warmth filled her face.
“I know mom, I know, we’re just gonna study, right Ken?”
Kenny only nodded, his eyes not leaving Majorine. So yeah, she might have him hooked. Her mother gave Majorine a knowing look, one that said the same things her friends say when Kenny’s struck with love by her. Majorine only rolled her eyes and led Kenny to her room. Though he knew where it was, he’s been over countless times, so he knows where he's going.
Majorine kept her door cracked open slightly as her mother wished; She turned towards Kenny, who had already made himself comfortable on her bed, and joined him and laid down beside him. It was instinct how their bodies fell into place like puzzle pieces. Kenny’s arm under her neck as she laid on her side, facing Kenny. He laid on his back, however, admiring his girlfriend’s work on her ceiling
Over the summer, Majorine had an idea to paint her ceiling. It was very challenging, and she had paint droplets on her body and clothes, but she had painted the section above her bed a flower field. Full of her and Kenny’s favorite flowers; Dahlias, tulips, calla lilies, lilies, marigolds, roses, and of course, sunflowers. It was very messy painting them, but the beauty of it was so worth it to Majorine. At first, Kenny said it was a dorky idea. But now, as she saw the way his eyes lit up at the different flowers, she knew he loved it.
She rolled closer to Kenny, laying her head on his chest and closing her eyes. Majorine’s smile only grew when she felt his hand in her hair. Majorine listened to Kenny’s heart beat, the only sound of bumping she enjoyed hearing. The two laid like that for a moment, bodies intertwined and enjoying the peace the other gave. Majorine would’ve loved to stay like this forever, but her phone's ding caught her attention.
Grabbing her phone, she looked at what it was. A reminder of what she was supposed to be doing, studying. Majorine groaned as she turned her phone off and closed her eyes again. But Kenny shifted, turning on his side to face Majorine.
“What is it, bunny?”
That stupid nickname that he gave her always brought butterflies to her stomach.
“I needed notes from Wendy, and I guess I forgot to tell her thanks..”
That stupid smile that he had knowing she had taken her attention always made her want to hide her face so he couldn’t see the effect on her face.
“Aw, I would’ve brought mine. Why do you need them?”
Majorine rolled her eyes playfully, most of Kenny’s “notes” were doodles. Doodles of her, flowers, bunnies, her, his friends, her; you could see the pattern.
“Mr. Garrison is giving out a test and he said I need to take it even though I missed.”
Seeing realization on Kenny’s face brought out a laugh, she always had to remind him of quizzes; she blamed him forgetting on his friend's insane ideas every other week, though she never told him that. She liked reminding him.
“Fuck, that’s tomorrow? I thought it was Friday.”
Majorine shook her head, watching as Kenny started thinking. From this close, she could see his features more clearly. The fading scars from how careless he was (though she knew he only did it to receive care from Majorine; he thought it was cute when she was worried), the light freckles on his cheeks, and how alluring his eyes were.
She was drawn out of her day dream when Kenny’s other arm rested over her hips, wrapping around her and pulling her into a hug. Majorine smiled, she’d hug him back but her hands were between their chests.
“My sweet reminder, what would I ever do without you Major.”
Or maybe Kenny had her hooked, the two never knew. It was a mutual effect they had on each other. Pining for the other as if it was human instinct.
“You’d probably fail..”
Kenny’s laugh would forever be a sweet melody to Majorine. Kenny’s lips found her frontal region of her head, placing a kiss there. Majorine loved his kisses, despite how short they were.
“I can get my notes and remind you of it? I need to review anyways”
Majorine mumbled into the hug, Kenny nodded and let her free from the hug. She got up and walked to her window first, closing it and latching it closed. Majorine pulled her curtains closed, the moon starting to rise over the horizon. She grabbed her note book and sat back on her bed. Kenny was still laying down when she sat back down, Majorine looked down at him and smiled. He wiggled his head onto her lap, closing his eyes as he rested against her thighs.
“This is not studying, Ken”
“Hearing your voice educates me”
She was so happy his eyes were closed, the way her face flushed up again was embarrassing to her. The way he says things like that so naturally didn’t help either.
But, she spent the next few minutes reviewing her notes. Eventually saying a few notes out loud for Kenny to hear, though if it stuck with him she wouldn’t know, she figured she’d have to help Kenny cheat tomorrow. She always did, she didn’t mind it. Majorine knew it was hard for Kenny to scramble all the information into his head before a test.
Kenny eventually reached up for one of her hands, and confused she obliged, putting her palm in his. He guided her hand to his scalp, and hummed as he brought his hand back to his chest. Majorine smiled, running her hands through his hair and scratching gently. His eyebrows raised as he let out a deep breath, as if he was waiting for her hand to be in his hair. Majorine continued flipping through her notes, placing the book beside Kenny’s head and flipping the page with one hand.
What felt like a few minutes was actually two hours of Majorine mumbling certain things as her eyes scrolled through the burrowed notes. At one point, Majorine was convinced Kenny had fallen asleep on her lap; his breathing was even, but a quick “Ken?” and a grumble told her he was still awake, just fighting sleep.
Majorine yawed, arching her back and feeling her spine pop a bit. She looked at her clock by her bed, her eyes widening as she read the time. It was 10 pm. Majorine rubbed at her eyes, the feeling of being tired hugged her body. Slowly, she closed her notes and leaned over to place it on her night stand. With her notes, she put her phone and Kenny’s.
She gently pat Kenny’s pockets, making sure he didn’t have anything else on him. When she found nothing, she nodded and gently shook Kenny. This time, he had fallen asleep. She could tell because of how groggy his voice was.
“Come on Ken, you can’t use my lap as a pillow..”
Majorine whispered, her hand resting on Kenny’s cheek as she rubbed circles with her thumb. He leaned into her hand, replying with a hum. She knew he was too tired to form words, so she just tried lifting him up. He followed her lead, his body just wanting to return close to hers. Majorine laid down on her bed, and she felt the bed dip beside her.
Kenny’s arms found their respective places, one under her neck and the other over her waist; his head against her crown. Majorine sighed, relaxing into the warm embrace. She grabbed her stuffed bunny, of course one Kenny won her at a fair, and held it close. She let her body relax, fading in and out of consciousness.
“Goodnight Ken, I love you.”
“Goodnight Major, I love you too.”
