Objectively, Uenoyama is amazing.

Summary:

Objectively, Uenoyama is amazing.

And the issue that comes along with that, is that Mafuyu isn’t the only person to recognize this fact..

Or

Mafuyu’s thoughts before and during Uenoyama’s talk with Kasai, which, he is not told the context of.

Notes:

If this feels unfinished in some way that’s because it kind of is? I truly could not think of anywhere else to take this fic so it’s kind of short unfortunately.. But it’s possible I’ll either make this part of a series of two or three separate fics or come back to add another chapter later on! Until then, this is all you get unfortunately. Still getting out of my two year long writers block so it’s not my best work…. The ending is also a bit open ended but this is completely canon compliant so don’t worry, they end up together, I promise! ☠️☠️

Work Text:

Uenoyama is amazing.

A fact that Mafuyu feels has been proven time and time again.

Fixing his broken guitar strings, agreeing to teach him how to play, asking him to join his band, working part time jobs, knowing so much about music. Being in a band with college students — or how when he puts his mind to something he’s too stubborn to give up, the list goes on, really.

There’s a lot about Uenoyama that’s cool other than those things too! He’s handsome, he has a nice smile. His personality is great, not so much that it’s overwhelming but not so little that it bores you.

Objectively, Uenoyama is amazing.

And the issue that comes along with that, is that Mafuyu isn’t the only person to recognize this fact.

It’s natural. Natural that a guy as well built and talented and handsome as Uenoyama would have a few fans. Girls crushing on him, guys wishing to be him… Guys crushing on him… It’s normal.

But despite that, it doesn’t really sit well with the boy.

Normalcy doesn’t quite make up for something being irritating, he supposes. And it’s not like there’s much he can do. Uenoyama is just his friend, really. So what reason does Mafuyu have to be so mad at the fact that others can admire him just as much as he does? There isn’t one, well, not a logical one anyways.

So it shouldn’t bother him. The way her face flushes slightly when her eyes drift to Uenoyama in the halls. How she bats her eyelashes when she speaks to him, smiling softly and eyeing him like he’s the only person in the room. The way she always, without fail, seems to be hovering around Uenoyama when he comes to get him to practice- It shouldn’t!

Ayano Kasai.

Mafuyu feels silly, really. And he should. Because he hasn’t felt this way in a long time.

Possessive, maybe.

The prospect of feeling this way about someone again in and of itself leaves a pit in his stomach that he isn’t too fond of. Because Uenoyama is not Yuki, and Mafuyu doesn’t love Uenoyama how he loved Yuki.

It’s an odd thought, really. One that Mafuyu finds grazing his mind more often than he would like. And maybe it isn’t such a bad one, (also objectively) but it still felt — wrong, in some sense. He turns that over in his head while he walks. Lost in a sea of emotions he’s sure he’ll never be able to explain out loud. Maybe not even in his own mind.

Yet Mafuyu’s thoughts come to a halt when his eyes catch the sight of Uenoyama’s friends crammed in the window, peering out.

At first he’s a bit confused, but as he’s waved over it clicks in his mind what they’re so intent on watching from their spot in the sky.

She’s crying.

And the thing that makes his stomach churn in specific, is that despite this fact, she still looks beautiful.

They’re talking about something. Uenoyama doesn’t seem to be particularly enjoying the conversation, and she seems upset. Something about that gives him a small, weird sense of comfort in some way. And Mafuyu mostly tunes out the yammering of the two beside him as they freak out because it “Has to be a confession!” And there’s just “Nothing else that could possibly be happening!”

According to them, anyways.

And something, somewhere inside of Mafuyu; the smallest inkling of a feeling slips out. Lips thinning as he stares down at the scene. It’s a horrid feeling, but one Mafuyu is intimately aquatinted with, perhaps to a fault.

Jealousy.
