Taste the anger on your knuckles

Summary:

Logan knows that some people aren't kind to gay people. He knows that some stick up their nose and judge his dads for loving each other. But, he's never had anyone say anything bad to him that his dads didn't handle themselves. At least, he didn't, until he was 16.

I suck at summaries but Logan loves his dads and someone's mean to them and he doesn't take it well.

Notes:

Sorry this took forever, a lot of things have happened lately. But I'm back now and decided to release this. It got sloppy towards the end. Honestly this whole work is sloppy but oh well.

Work Text:

Monday morning, Logan gets up at his usual hour and gets ready for school. He takes a quick shower before going downstairs, and that's when he feels comfort. Jenson sat at the dining table, in his unassigned-assigned seat. While Nico is in front of the stove, making blueberry pancakes. The smell reminds him of his childhood.

“Morning, bear. Sleep well?” Jenson asks, putting his cup of tea down. He opens his arms and Logan instantly goes into them, giving him a quick hug. “Yeah, I did. Feel a bit hot though.” It's that time of the year. The time of the year where Logan always gets sick. He doesn't get sick any other time though, it's weird.

Nico comes over to him and puts a pancake on his plate, then puts his hand on Logan's forehead. Logan instantly feels comfort in it. “You're not hot, and you feel normal. If you start getting worse, let me know. We'll take you to the doctor.” Nico runs his fingers through his hair then walks away. “Did you study for the test you have today?” Nico asks. He can hear the smirk in his voice. Logan knows he already knows the answer. He looks away from him and looks at Jenson. Jenson just stifles a laugh. “Ummm…” Logan drags out. Nico just hums. “Eat your pancake and go to school, sonnenschein.” Nico orders.

Logan scarfs it down fast, “I got to meet up with Liam, I'll see you guys later.” Logan gets up and kisses Jenson on the forehead and Nico on the cheek. “Bye, Logan. Good luck.” Jenson laughs.

Logan runs out the door and to his and Liam's meeting spot. They've been meeting there for almost all their friendship. They then walk to school together. “Liam!” Logan shouts at him. Liam jumps and turns around, he's got one airpod in and looks red. It's freezing outside, but all Liam has on is a thin long sleeve shirt on. Logan mentally rolls his eyes. “You scared me, dip shit.” Liam huffs out. “Yeah yeah. Hey, did you study for the test?” Logan looks over at Liam, his eyes are wide.

“Mate, what? I didn't even know there was one.” Classical Liam, he's smart so he probably doesn't need to, but Logan likes to mess with him. “Yep, and I didn't study either. So you can't cheat off me.” Liam sticks his tongue out at him, Logan mirrors it.

—––———
After a grueling test, and a teacher who kept side eyeing him throughout the whole class, Logan just wants to go home. He grabs his tray of food from the cafeteria and sits down at his usual spot. The lunch looks unappealing - to say the least. He feels even more pissed off just looking at it. Oscar shoves his own lunch box towards him. "I'm not really hungry. You can have whatever's in there." Oscar tells him with a shrug of his shoulders. Logan quickly thanks him before eating the rest of the sandwich that was in there.

When Logan finishes the sandwich and is about to eat the yogurt, he looks up. Alex is stressing over his English vocabulary, mispronouncing words Logan didn't even know could be mispronounced, and Oscar's having the hardest time trying to tell him how to say it right. He's repeating the same words slower and slower., trying to help him. Liam nudges his shoulder and nods his head into the direction a random kid is coming from.

Now, Logan wouldn't say he and his friends are uninviting, but they're not exactly use to people coming up to them and sitting with them. And this kid looks up to no good, at least, that's what Nico would say. Logan agrees, he has this smug look on his face that Logan instantly hates.

“You're Logan, right?” The kid asks. His voice sounds as annoying as he looks. Logan has an unwelcoming feeling curling up into his gut.

“Yeah. Why are you asking?” Logan asks back. Logan feels like it's only fair. A question for a question. An answer for an answer.

“I just have a question for you. Is it okay if I ask?” The kid sort of laughs when he speaks. Logan knows something is about to happen, so he turns to Liam. Liam just shrugs his shoulders and nods, Logan can also see Oscar and Alex are also looking.

“Sure.” Logan says, flatly. He turns back around to the random guy.

“Your dads are gay, right? Like, you have two dads?” He says. Logan knows he isn't asking him even though it sounds like a question. It's almost like he's about to make fun of his dads. Logan curls his fist.

“Yeah. I have two dads.” This guy is like nails dragging down a chalkboard.

“So they're faggots?” Time freezes. Logan can hear Oscar gasps and Liam mutter an “oh fuck. Here we go.”

“What'd you say?”

“I said, you're dads are fag-” Logan pulls his fist back and slams it into the kids face. He hears something crunch and the kids groan loudly.

“What the fuck, mate?” Logan doesn't even let the kid try to fight back before he's pulling the kid off his seat and onto the ground. Kids are looking at them, ready to finally see a fight. Logan gets on top of the kid and punches him again, and again, and again. The dude's nose is bleeding, both his eyes are probably black and he might have lost a tooth.

Logan doesn't stop until he feels someone pull him off. He turns around to look and sees it's one of his teachers. He knows he's about to get into serious trouble with both his school and his dads. He doesn't care, though. He'd gladly do it again if that means defending his dads. Especially against homophobic pricks like that kid.

“Logan! Office now!” The teacher yelled at him, he pulled him into the principal's office before Logan could even find his footing.

Logan doesn't remember much from the office, just people asking him questions and him not answering. The nurse came in a little bit ago, just to clean his fist. He just sits there, waiting. Waiting for his dad and his papa.

The principal stands up and walks out of his office, Logan looks into the direction he was walking and sees his dads. They walk back to Logan. “Logan, I've got your parents. Are you finally going to answer our questions?” The principal asks. He's talking to Logan like he's a child, a child with anger issues. Logan doesn't have anger issues.

“Okay. I will.” Logan mutters. His leg is shaking and he's already bitten his fingernails off. He just wants to go home.

“Bear, what happened? Why'd you punch the kid?” Jenson asks. It makes Logan tears up. God, he's a teenage boy that's crying because his parents are being clueless. He can't tell them why. It'll just make them upset.

Logan doesn't answer. “Logan. You said you'd answer.” Nico says. Jesus.

“He was being rude, so I punched him.”

“Logan, we told you if anyone's mean to you then you can-” Logan cuts Nico off.

“He wasn't being mean to me, he was being rude to you. He was calling you names and shit.” Logan says. Jenson rolls his eyes at his cursing but Nico just furrows his brows. Logan looks over at the principal. The principal speaks up, “What'd he say? What did the kid say to you?”

Logan glances at his papa and shakes his head, “Can I just go home now?” Nico nods and grabs his hand to hold it.

Logan finds out that he's going to be suspended for a few days, but it's worth it. When they get into the car to get home, Jenson looks at Logan through the mirror, “You don't have to tell us what he said right now, but you will tomorrow.” Logan clenches his jaw and nods. He looks out the mirror for the rest of the drive and it's dead silent in the car.

—————

When they get home, Logan runs up the stairs to his room and slams his door shut. He jumps into bed and shoves his face into his pillow and just cries. He cries because his fathers want him to tell them, but he can't hurt them like that. He can't tell them people are rude about them. He hears his door open and feet shuffling towards him. He feels the bed dip and a hand run up his back, into his hair. It feels soothing, Logan knows instantly it's Nico. Nico always did it whenever Logan was feeling bad. When he was laying in bed with the flu, or when he had a fever, when he was crying because he lost his favorite toy, Nico always rubbed his back and played with his hair. Logan instantly calms down and lets out a sigh. He tries to get his breathing normal.

“Logan, baby, what's the matter?” Nico asks, voice softly. Logan turns around, he knows his nose is snotty and eyes are red. His hair is probably all over the place, too. Logan holds out his arms and Nico understands fast. He moves on Logan's bed until his back his against the head board. He moves Logan onto his lap and puts Logan's snotty face into his shoulder.

Logan knows he has to tell him, “He was being mean to you and Dad. He was being mean about the fact you two are married.” Logan hiccups as he's telling him.

Nico shushes him and kisses his forehead, “People are always going to be mean about me and your dad for being two guys married. And they're always going to give you shit for it. You just have to take it. If you fight them all, you're letting them win.”

“But why? Why do I have to take it? Why can't they just be okay with it?” Logan knows he's asking questions Nico can't and won't be able to answer.

Nico sighs,“I don't know, sonnenschein. I really don't know.”

Logan just stays quiet. He stays still, cuddled up on his papa for the longest time ever. He can tell Nico wants to talk more, tell him things Logan has to hear. But Logan feels like he's going to puke if Nico tells him that he has to let people be rude about his fathers again. He hears a noise coming from his open door and sees his dad leaning up against the doorway.

“You okay bear?” Jenson asks softly. Do his parents think he's made out of glass right now? Do they think he's going to snap again? Why are they acting like this?

“Yeah, I'm okay.” He sighs.

Jenson walks closer to Logan and Nico, “Can I lay with you guys?”

Logan is so glad his dads decided to upgrade him to a full mattress instead of keeping him at a twin size. He moves so he's in a laying position and Nico squirms his way down, too. Logan nods his head and moves over so Jenson can lay behind him.

When he's finally sandwiched in-between his dads, just like he was when he was a kid, he feels completely comforted.

“What do you want for dinner, Logan?” Jenson asks. Nico laughs at it, “We're all cuddling together and you're thinking about food?” Jenson rolls his eyes. “Well, I'm sorry that I'm hungry. I'll just wait.” Jenson huffs, jokingly.

“I want pizza, Dad.” Logan replies. Jenson looks at him shocked. “See, babe. There's an answer.” Jenson says to Nico.

“I love you Jenson, but please stop thinking about food 24/7.” Nico says to his husband.

Jenson gasps, which makes Logan laugh, “Stop thinking about food? Wow. Well you, Nico Button-Rosberg, should stop trying to change me.”

“Change you? Okay, if that's what you want to call it.” Nico rolls his eyes.

“Britney, stop being sassy.”

“Well, don't call me Britney.”

Logan laughs at his parent's antics. Some days he actually forgets that they're married, that they've known each other longer than Logan has been alive. That they're soulmates. Logan wants love like that, he wants his other half. Nico and Jenson are exact opposites, one's always the main attraction of the room, making horrible jokes just to see people laugh. While the other is more reserved, only making jokes when he can- but they fit. They fit so well Logan thinks they were made specifically for another- he wants that.

——————

After they eat dinner, the long day catches up to Logan. Nico cleans his hands up, and lays him in bed. “So, are you done punching people?” Nico laughs. Logan thinks for a response, “Only if they stop being jackasses.” That causes Nico to laugh even harder.

Nico looks at him then kisses his forehead, “Go to sleep, Logan. I'll see you in the morning.”

Logan lays there, after his papa left his room, he just stared at the ceiling of his room. There's glow in the dark plastic stars on his ceiling, the ones he begged his dads to get him and Jenson had to put them on. It made the eight year old him happy, made him feel like an astronaut. Younger him knew what he wanted to be, he had dreams. Now, right now, he doesn't know what he wants to be. He doesn't even know why people hate his dads just because they're gay.

They've prepared him for this. They sat him down at the kitchen table as soon as he was able to understand and told him that not everyone is going to like them just because of their sexuality. They told him that he's going to get people who look at him differently because he has two dads and not a mom and a dad. Logan was confused, his ten years old brain didn't fully understand, but he understands now. He's never had a person come up to him and so easily hate on his dads. Fortunately, Liam has always taken care of it. He remembers when he was eight that Liam's mom told him that her son is in trouble for hurting a kid. He remembers overhearing from Liam's mom, the same day, that Liam pushed a kid down in the mud because they called Logan a weirdo for not having a mum and a dad.

He also remembers Liam going to his house the next day and just hugging him, telling him that he loves him even if he has two dads. Telling him that he doesn't even find it abnormal, Logan thought that was a big word for Liam, that Liam finds it quite nice. They hugged for quite a while longer, scared that the other might vanish from their arms. They then put on Cars and played with dinosaurs together, like normal kids their age would do.

Logan feels his phone vibrating underneath his pillow and slides his hand to grab it. The phone light is harsh against his eyes in his dark room and he has to squint to make out the name that's calling him, it's Liam. Of course. Logan waits another second until he finally answers it, before he can even open his mouth to say anything, Liam speaks up, “So, are your dads mad?” Logan laughs, if only he knew. “No, not really. More so sad.”

“Sad? Why are they sad?” Liam asks, Logan can already picture his furrowed brows and wrinkled nose.

“I don't know, man. It's kind of weird.” Logan says in full honesty.

“Yeah, I've never seen them sad and I've known you and them for years.”

Logan sighs and pinches his nose, “I know. Look, I'm going to go to sleep. Call you in the morning.”

Logan huffs, “Sure,” he drags out. “But you have to actually call me. Don't leave me hanging.”

Logan rolls his eyes, “I'm going to call you. I promise. Have some faith in me.”

“Fine, talk to you tomorrow. Goodnight.” Liam says. Logan says it back before hanging up. Liam's always been protective. Well, they're protective of each other. They've been through every phase together, so why wouldn't they be protective?

Logan closes his eyes and lets the ache in his bones and the exhaustion from today take over.

———————

Logan wakes up to the feeling of being watched, he shots up and looks around his room. He looks over at his door and sees a figure standing in his doorway. He has to squint to make it out and rubs the eye crust away. He can finally tell who it is, “Dad? What are you doing? Jesus, you scared me.” Logan grabs his chest, heart beating hard. “Sorry bear, just wanted to check up on you.” Logan huffs out a laugh before replying sarcastically, “Yeah, dad, I'm actually going to run away and go to Canada.”

Jenson smiles then walks closer to his bed. He sits down on the foot of his bed and looks at his son, “You wouldn't like Canada, it's too cold. You don't like the cold.” He has a point. Logan hates the cold. He'd rather be on a beach with a popsicle and would stay out in the water with the Sun beating down on him until his skin resembles a lobster. “Yeah, you're right.” Jenson shrugs his shoulders as if to say ‘I know’

Logan scoots over until he makes enough room on his bed for Jenson to lay down. Jenson looks at the space before he slides into it. He lays on his back and pulls Logan on his chest, putting his face into his neck. Logan remembers growing up. He remembers so many things about his childhood, because when he was younger he made sure to hold on to those memories. His favorite memory of him and his dads is that day they went to the beach together when he was seven.

It was just them three on the beach. The sun was going down and sand was sticking to their skin. Jenson was peeling an orange for him and he was sitting on Nico's lap. His back was pressed against his papa's back and Nico's arms were around his waist loosely. He holds onto that memory the most, he holds onto it so much he still remembers the smell of the sea in the wind. He remembers running his hands over the soft towel they were sitting on, he can still feel it if he thinks hard enough.

Logan looks up at the shelf above his desk and sees the small jar of sand from that day. Next to it is a picture of his dads on their wedding day. He wasn't around when they got married but he likes looking at it. He loves seeing the pure love in each other's eyes. And right now, he knows they love him. His dad is already asleep, he can hear the soft snores coming from him. He closes his eyes and thinks about more memories they've had. Like the day Logan lost his first tooth, or when they went to Disney world because Jenson really wanted to see Mickey Mouse. Logan's favorite part was the fireworks. Or when Nico brought him to his parent's house and they gave him so much chocolate he got sick.

He falls asleep with a smile on his face. And when he wakes up to both his parents in his bed, he'll be even happier.
