Sheltering Souls (Demon Slayer x Reader)

Chapter 1: Small Town Secrets Unfolded

Chapter Text

I watched as the final add-ons to the shelter were added. “Thank you again for helping making this idea come to life sir!” I looked to the main man in charge, the layers of sweat and dirt being clear to see in the bright burning sun. “It’s not a problem, you’ll be doing us a favor with this shelter. Taking care of the animals around here will be a large enough task.” “Oh yes! Speaking of which, back in my town there was always stories about the animals around here being ‘special’. Is it true?” I questioned the man turning fully towards him. “Well, I can‘t talk from experience, but I can tell you this, kid. You’ll have your hands full with these animals.” I only hummed at his avoidance of my question, turning my attention to the last few people who carried the equipment inside coming out of the front doors. “Say kid, how did ya afford all this stuff?!” A younger man yelled while walking out. “I was fortunate enough to have been given all my equipment from veterinary clinics and shelters within the Entertainment District. Though the decor and beddings are my personal belongings.” “Damn rich kids..” “Excuse me?” “NOTHING MA’AM!” I only grinned at the exchange, and once everyone left I began to organize my items within the mansion like building.

I wasn’t lying when I said I was fortunate, and that guy wasn’t wrong either. My family is wealthy and well known for our animal clinics and shelters. It only made sense for me to follow the tradition, though I did choose an area which my family hadn’t monopolized yet. One known for its recent mysteries increase of wildlife; though, the area was kinda isolated, only a small village within quick walking distance. And luckily the town was locally well known for its large trade in meats, berries, and breads. I already purchased a few local plants and meats for myself and future wildlife. I took my bedding and set it up for the incoming night. I walked to the kitchen area, a window displaying the setting sun and the sounds of crickets and frogs approach. I grinned to myself and grabbed the ‘ready-to-go’ bush and walked outside. I had requested a gardening box be placed near the back for the build to allow me to provide berries for myself, and I quickly found it. I dug a medium size hole in the soft ground and began to add the bush, though I could feel the presence of something behind me I ignore it and finish up. Dusting my hands off before heading back inside, locking the door behind me. I then went to the front of the house and locked it too and turning on the lights on the porch area.

I sighed once I finished locking up and fully organized the rooms. By the time I was done the moon was at it’s highest, though I already knew I wasn’t going to sleep well tonight I felt annoyed by my lack of awareness of time. I cleaned up whatever mess was left from the unpacking and went to the communal bathroom. I didn’t know if I wanted to yet hire help in the clinic so I had a communal bathroom installed and manyyy bedrooms. Everything was large enough to fit someone of larger than average stature and I was proud of the slightly uncommon design. I walked in and quickly cleaned myself before going to my bedroom. I still left a presence around me, but I just took it as paranoia of my new housing or the hyper awareness of nocturnal animals.

     -New POV-

I saw a bright light from the newly built house, the woman had already left back into the house awhile ago. It should be safe enough to approach it before pausing. I was alone, so it wasn’t like I had to worry about the others. So why am I so worried about this? I shook off my concerns and smelt for the fresh berries. Quickly finding them and picking them from the small bush beside the house. I’m sure the women wouldn’t mind, she smelt warm and comforting.. kinda like… *crack* I turned to the noise. Smelling for a scent, but finding none, i quickly retreat with hand fulls of berries.
