During The Apocalypse

Summary:

Five and y/n are seemingly the only two people alive on earth. Five has a reasonable explanation for being alive, but y/n shouldn’t be. How did she survive the explosion that engulfed the whole world? They struggle to survive together in a barren wasteland of a world. (Also other things happen but I’m not gonna spoil it, you should just read it)

Notes:

Hi! This is my first story so sorry if it sucks. I love umbrella academy and did have a small crush on Five at one point (I’m over it for now, but season 4 comes today!!!) Anyways this is sorta based off my crushing on Five era. Hopefully you enjoy! (p.s. the title sucks but I can’t think of a better one)

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

I groan and pull my pillow over my head

“Huh?” I grumble. Five said something but it’s too early to comprehend anything right now. I doubt it’s even 5:30 yet. Five and I have very different body clocks.

“Happy apocalypse-iversary. It’s been exactly one year since everything went to shit.” He says. Oh. That. You’d think I could remember the day my entire family and everyone else died in a horrible fiery catastrophe.

“Ooh yay.” I deadpan “I almost forgot. Do you think the store will have any themed cupcakes left?” My voice is muffled under the pillow so five tries to pull it away. I grab it back and bury my face in it again. Five chuckles.

“Don’t worry I’m sure there’ll be some left. I was just going to the store to get a nice apocalypse day breakfast. Want me to grab the cupcakes too?” My stomach groans along with me as reach my arm out to try and hit Five. I don’t know where he is in the tent, though and I’m not leaving my pillow shield, so I let my arm fall beside me.

“Don’t bring up food right now. I don’t wanna think about even more things that this lovely apocalypse has taken away.” It’s been an unlucky few days for scavenging and we haven’t eaten for too long. Five is silent now. I know I shouldn’t have brought up the fact that our families are gone. Usually we just glaze over the subject and try to make (admittedly not very funny) jokes to ignore what really happened. I finally take the pillow off my face and look over at him.

“Sorry” I say.

“It’s okay. I was already thinking about it anyways.”

“Yeah” I know that Five’s upbringing was a lot different from mine and that it was dangerous. His father was abusive and manipulative but I also know that he still misses his family. He doesn’t talk about it often but from what he says I can tell that his siblings mean a lot to him. He’s trying to figure out a way to get back to before Armageddon, but the equations he’s coming up with aren’t working. I wish I could help but I don’t really understand that level of math. Or teleportation. Or time travel. I try to change the subject.

“You’re not dragging me out of bed like you usually do” I say. he smirks at me.

“Consider it an apocalypse day present.”

“Hey, I’ll take it” I laugh. “So how much extra sleep will this present get me?”

“I don’t know. Realistically we should try and go pretty far today. We need to find some food and this area is empty.”

“Yeah” I say somewhat disappointedly.

“On the other hand, you’re not the only one who misses grocery stores. I would kill many people for a cup of coffee right now.”

“Why don’t we sleep in for a bit then and to save time I’ll pack up camp and you teleport around to find a place that looks promising? You come back here and we’ll be ready to go and we’ll have a destination in mind.” Five sighs

“Y/n we’ve gone over this. It’s not smart to be separated. What if someone dangerous comes along?”

“I really don’t think there’s anyone around. I’m pretty sure no one survived.”

“You did” Five points out. It’s a fair point. I don’t know how I survived. I was outside throwing some recycling into the bin when everything caught on fire and buildings collapsed. My family was inside. Something from an explosion hit me on the head and I got knocked out. I woke up on the ground later and everything was over. Whatever hit me must have been on fire though because I have scars on that side of my face. Maybe it was the fact that I was outside that saved me. My family was inside and they’re all gone. When I woke up I dug through the rubble of my house, but when I found my brother’s detached arm, I had to stop. I absentmindedly touch the burn marks on my face.

“I guess that’s true, but I’m still not convinced that there’s other people around. I shouldn’t be here and we both know that. You have a legit excuse because you skipped the whole everything exploding part, but there’s no reason for me to be alive”

“I’m glad you are alive though,” Five says softly. Then he looks embarrassed and continues. “Because statistically, the chances of going us insane are much higher if we were alone with no one to interact with. It’s much better this way” I look at him and he doesn’t meet my gaze.

“That’s true. But we won’t be alive much longer if we die of starvation. I think it’s smarter if you go ahead since you’re infinity times faster than me.” Five looks conflicted.

“Fine.” He finally relents. “But I’m not going to be gone for more than 15 minutes.”

“Great! Now I’m going to use my apocalypse day present, so good night” I pull the blankets over my head and close my eyes but Five prods my shoulder.

“Just a second, y/n. I think I should get a present too.” I open my eyes again and see him holding back laughter.

“What do you want?”

“How about a blanket since you’re hogging them all?” He laughs. I look down at myself and sure enough, all the blankets are pooled on me.

“Oh geez, sorry! Do I do that a lot?”

Five laughs again.

“Sorta.” He says. I feel my face flush. I feel bad.

“You should just steal them back if I do.”

“It’s fine. You look so happy when you’re asleep I don’t want to ruin it.”

“We’ll here,” I say. I pull Fives camping air mattress towards me so that they’re side by side. “Now I hopefully won’t steal the blankets since I’ll already be under them.” I re-organize the blankets so that they’re half on me and half on Five’s mattress.

“Now goodnight.”

“Goodnight y/n” Five says. I feel him move next to me to get under the covers. It’s still too early in the morning, so I fall asleep easily.
