Work Text:
Ava and Cameron had been best friends since high school. They met in their sophomore year, drawn together by their shared love of books and late-night philosophical conversations. Ava, with her fair complexion and warm, curvy figure, had a smile that could light up the darkest room. Cameron, tall and dark with a quiet strength about him, was her rock, her confidant, the one who knew her better than anyone else.
They spent countless afternoons in coffee shops, pouring over novels and discussing the meaning of life. Ava admired Cameron's depth, the way he could see the world in shades of gray while others saw only black and white. Cameron, in turn, loved Ava's unwavering optimism, her ability to find beauty in the smallest of things.
As the years passed, their bond only grew stronger. They navigated the ups and downs of life together—first jobs, failed relationships, and the trials of adulthood. But somewhere along the way, their feelings for each other shifted. Ava found herself drawn to Cameron in a way that was more than friendship, and she couldn’t deny the flutter in her heart whenever he was near. Cameron, too, began to see Ava differently, noticing the way her laughter made his world feel a little brighter.
But there was always something holding them back. Cameron was fiercely loyal to his principles, and one of those was never crossing the line with a friend, especially not one as important as Ava. He was terrified of ruining what they had, of losing her if things didn’t work out. Ava, on the other hand, feared rejection. She couldn't bear the thought of confessing her feelings and watching their friendship crumble if Cameron didn’t feel the same.
The tension between them became palpable, each stolen glance and lingering touch filled with unspoken words. Their friends noticed it too, but neither Ava nor Cameron were willing to risk what they had for the unknown.
One evening, after a long day at work, they found themselves back at the old coffee shop where they had spent so much time together. It was a chilly autumn night, the kind that makes you long for warmth and comfort. Ava sat across from Cameron, her hands wrapped around a mug of hot chocolate, her mind racing with the words she had rehearsed so many times.
But before she could speak, Cameron broke the silence.
“Ava, there’s something I need to tell you,” he began, his voice low and uncertain. “I’ve been offered a job in another city. It’s a great opportunity, and I think I need to take it.”
Ava felt her heart drop. The words she had been holding onto suddenly seemed pointless. Cameron was leaving. And now, she would never have the chance to tell him how she felt.
“When do you leave?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
“In a few weeks,” Cameron replied, his eyes searching hers for a reaction.
Ava nodded, forcing a smile. “That’s great, Cameron. I’m really happy for you.”
But Cameron could see the pain behind her eyes. He reached across the table, taking her hand in his. “Ava, I…”
She shook her head, cutting him off. “Don’t. Just… don’t.”
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of what wasn’t being said pressing down on them both. Finally, Cameron spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper.
“You know I care about you, right?”
Ava nodded, her throat tight with emotion. “I care about you too, Cameron. More than you know.”
They both knew what was happening. This was the moment where everything could change—where they could finally admit what they had both been feeling for so long. But neither of them spoke the words that hung in the air between them.
Instead, they sat there, hands intertwined, hearts breaking under the weight of what could never be. They were best friends, but they were also something more—something that neither of them could quite define or pursue.
As the days passed, Cameron prepared to leave, and Ava tried to be happy for him, even as her heart shattered into pieces. They said their goodbyes with promises to stay in touch, but they both knew things would never be the same.
Cameron moved to the new city, and though they kept in contact, the distance between them grew, not just in miles but in emotions. They both moved on with their lives, always wondering what could have been, but never daring to find out.
Years later, when Ava found herself back at the old coffee shop, she couldn’t help but think of Cameron. She wondered if he ever thought of her, if he ever regretted not taking that chance. But she would never know, just as he would never know the depth of her feelings for him.
And so, they remained as they always had—best friends, but forever apart, their love story an unwritten chapter in the book of their lives. A story of what could have been, but never was, leaving both of them with hearts half-full and a longing that would never fade...
