“Oh, c’mon, Alex... Just give it a chance!” Lena said looking at her fiancée as the two sat on the couch in their living room.
Alex shook her head, an amused smile on her lips. “What’s with you and these old TV shows? I’m pretty sure that you and Winn are the only two people in National City, and beyond, watching them. And speaking of Winn, why don’t you watch it with him? I’m sure he’d love that and I bet he’d even bring snacks.” she chuckled.
The show in question was one called ‘The Way Home’.
“Because I don’t want to watch it with Winn. He tears up when we discuss almost any scene.” Lena remarked in response to Alex’s question.
Alex laughed. “Yeah, it does sound like him.”
“I want to watch it with you.” Lena uttered, her tone softer again. “And as to why I love watching vintage TV shows – I find them comforting.”
“I’m not sure what’s so comforting about time-travel, babe.” Alex returned, frowning slightly. “We are both familiar with it, and you know that I’m really not a fan.”
Alex really did not like time-travel, or anything associated with it.
Lena nodded as she gently rubbed the back of her fiancée’s hand. “I know, love.” she assured her. “And I am not asking you to actually time-travel. I’m just asking you to watch a TV show with me.” she remarked expectantly.
“But, babe…” Alex tried, even as she could feeling her resolve weakening – she could never refuse Lena anything. Not really. “I was hoping we could watch a movie together, or just cuddle. We’ve barely seen each other this week as it is.”
They had been on conflicting schedules the whole week, so they both welcomed this Friday evening and the weekend ahead.
“How about this…” Lena started: “We watch one episode, and if you’re not hooked halfway through, I promise, we’ll stop and I won’t ask you to watch it again. And then, we can watch any movie you like. And as for cuddling…” the brunette said as she lifted Alex’s arm and scooted under it: “We can cuddle while we watch.”
And just like that, Alex conceded. She shook her head, and looking at the woman she loved, said: “Fine, but if I can’t get into it, we turn it off.”
Lena beamed at her. “Deal!” She kissed her sweetly.
Then, she started the episode.
********************
“See? I’ve told you the plot is worth it.” Lena remarked some time later as they both watched the show intently.
“Sure. If you disregard the whole time-traveling murky pond in their backyard.” Alex quipped, good-naturedly.
“Minor details, love.” Lena returned, undeterred. “Besides, you can’t tell me that you don’t like it.” she then remarked meaningfully. “I know how you get when you are bored with things – you start to yawn. We’re almost at the end of the episode and you haven’t yawned once.”
Alex melted at the fact that Lena knew her so well. She did even try to contradict her. “Fine…” she said: “I’ll concede that, in general, the plot is very cleverly devised and pretty intriguing.”
“Ha! I knew it!” Lena exclaimed triumphantly. “I knew you’d like it!”
“I didn’t say that… But I don’t hate it.” the redhead returned with a telling smile.
Lena smirked. “I’ll take it!”
“Well, Kat’s certainly not afraid to speak her mind.” Alex now noted as they watched the current scene unfold.
Lena’s smirk widened as she asked: “Does she remind you of anyone you know?”
Alex frowned: “Should she?”
Lena raised a silent eyebrow in her trademark way.
Alex took the hint. “Oh, c’mon, Lena! She’s nothing like me!” she promptly protested. ”She’s all over the place!”
“She was like that in the beginning because she felt lost, but once she’s come back home, she’s found her bearings again.” Lena said.
“I’m not so sure about that, babe.” now Alex countered. “I mean, she’s clearly conflicted – she can’t decide between Elliot and Thomas and there are obvious sparks with Susanna, too.” she pointed out as the corner of her mouth curved up into a knowing smirk and she moved closer to Lena, their foreheads touching. “I don’t have that problem.” she rasped: “I know exactly whom I want.”
A rush of electricity went through Lena and it mirrored in her voice: “Lucky for me!” she returned before she closed the distance between them in kiss that left them both more than a little breathless.
Once they turned their attention to the TV again, Lena remarked: “But seriously though, it’s like you said - Kat’s not afraid to speak her mind – just like you. She is also fiercely protective of her family, just like you; she always tries to help people, just like you. And well, she sort of looks like you too… Well, an older version of you, but still… Her smile and her eyes definitely remind me of you.” she said.
Alex watched the show intently, and after a few moments of silence, she said: “Well, I don’t know… maybe if I squint… Maybe just a little.” she concluded. Then, she looked at Lena and asked: “So, do you like her?”
For a beat, Lena was confused. “What do you mean?”
“Kat.” Alex said. “Do you like her? Do you find her attractive?”
Instantly, Lena raised an eyebrow again – mutely - at her fiancée.
“What?! I would just like to know what my odds are here.” Alex shrugged. “You said that she looks like an older version of me, so I want to know if I should be worried of you trading me in for a younger model down the line.”
Alex expected a witty comeback, or even a mock-frown, from her fiancée in response. But, she was in for a surprise.
Smiling, Lena laced their fingers together. Their engagement rings touched. “There are zero chances of that happening, love. You are irreplaceable!” she uttered adoringly.
Alex melted on the spot. “Despite the fact that I’m an open book to you?” she quipped even as her heart fluttered.
Lena’s own heart soared at Alex’s remark. She understood the enormity of those words. “Especially because you are an open book to me, love.” she returned with pure adoration for the woman she loved. “I know how lucky I am to have you.”
Alex swallowed hard. “I’m the lucky one, Lena!” she uttered reverently in response.
Lena beamed at her, her emerald eyes twinkling. “I love you.”
“I love you, too. So much!” Alex instantly reciprocated.
Lena’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Enough to get into the murky pond for me in just your nightgown?” she teased.
Promptly, Alex smirked. “Well, now, that depends…” she quipped: “What would I get in return?”
Without wasting a beat, Lena leaned in and captured her fiancée’s lips in a deep, breathtaking kiss. “How about this for a reward?!” she asked breathlessly as green met brown again.
“It’s a good start…!” Alex returned in kind before reclaiming Lena’s lips with her own again.
It wasn’t long before Alex became a big fan of said TV show.
