Chapter Text
It had been five months since Logan was given a second chance. Five months since Deadpool and Wolverine held hands and saved the world. And what a good five months it had been. Logan had calmed down, finding security and safety in his new found domestic life.
He was working at a lumber yard outside of town, while still doing the occasional superheroing/mercenary work with Wade. The two shared a pullout bed at the shithole apartment they shared with Al. She was kind to him, which was a complete 180 from how she would talk to Wade. Once Wade let it slip that Logan is 200 years old, it started a small bond between Al and him. Because they could talk about certain things way before Wade's time. Which he of course whines about every time, because he's being left out. Laura had gotten herself an apartment a few blocks from them and they try to do family dinners every week, it doesn't always happen, but Logan found himself really enjoying the domesticity of it all.
At the end of month three, Al had had it with their bullshit. The noise, the blood everywhere, the ‘not so silent pining’, so she had them find a place of their own. It's not like she kicked them out, just heavily persuaded
Their new place was a small two bedroom apartment with a laundry list of problems that Logan would spend the next two months convinced that he could fix himself. It was a block away from the old place, so they could still go visit Al whenever. The location was very important to Wade when they went apartment hunting, he didn't want to be that far from her. Logan understood that fact even without him saying so.
The apartment technically had two bedrooms, but sleeping separately only lasted a week. Between both of them having chronic nightmares, Wade's overall clinginess, and the fact that they had both gotten so used to sleeping next to the other. They would always end up in the same bed one way or the other. The transition into sharing a room was smooth but unspoken. Logan staying in Wade's room longer than needed to, and conveniently falling asleep. Wade pretending he was stressed out so that Logan would stay. There was something going on, but both were too afraid of the fragile security they had put themselves in. And soon enough Logan moved whatever few belongings he had into Wade's room, since it was bigger.
“I'm gonna end up in here anyway, might as well just move my shit in here”
Is all he had said when Wade caught him unpacking, a stupid grin on his face.
Logan hadn't fully realized why he felt so safe around the loud mouthed idiot. Sure he could excuse the sleeping arrangements with his history of crashing in other people's rooms during his days with the X-men, but this felt different. It's not like it super mattered to him, he wasn't really one for labels (or feelings). He still liked whatever he had going on with Wade, it was some weird unspoken thing that they were both comfortable with. They slept in the same bed, worked on missions together, cooked for each other, took turns choosing what to watch. Logan wouldn't even complain if Wade got into his personal space on the couch during a reality TV binge watching night.
Vanessa once joked about them being a “package deal” once. Which they were, but a majority of that was because Logan didn't know anyone else, so Wade would drag him to whatever outing he was going to. Obviously they knew how to exist without the other, they were grown adults. They both just had a silent mutual agreement about their dynamic. Wade's other friends just like to throw in jokes like “when's the wedding?” And “where's your boyfriend?” to either of them, if the other wasn't close by.
They weren't dating. But they were inseparable.
Five months since saving the world and the pair was doing just fine. Wade was passed out on the couch in a position only comfortable to him, with his legs over Logan's thighs and stretching all the way to the other arm rest. The other didn't even seem to mind all that much, an idle hand messing with the fabric of Wade's pajama pants as he focused on the movie in front of him. It was some campy werewolf movie that Wade had insisted they watch, only to fall asleep ten minutes in. Logan would honestly rather be watching anything else, but didn't feel like moving in fear of waking Wade.
An all too familiar orange rectangle appeared in their living room, disrupting the peace and quiet that Logan was very much enjoying. The mere sight of it was enough to sour the man's mood. He wasn't sure what it was about, but the TVA showing up unannounced was never a good sign.
Logan shook Wade's leg in an attempt to wake him, while reaching for the remote in the same motion. Only to get a small tired noise of protest from his roommate.
“Wake up moron.” he shoved the others' legs off of him. It earned a startled noise from him as his limbs frantically flailed around to avoid falling off the couch. Logan watched him get his bearings, as he sat correctly on the couch rubbing his eyes.
“What was that for-”
“What did you do this time.” Logan accused, loosely pointing to the portal. He sounded more tired than angry.
“I-” Wade's pleas were cut off by a figure emerging from the portal. It was a man, and probably the most generic looking man either of them had ever seen. His blonde hair was buzzed into a clean military cut, a clean shaven face to match his almost wrinkle-less face, paired with a deep blue freshly ironed suit. He looked like a walking stock photo of a chipper businessman.
“He did not do anything.” His vocal tone didn't match his face, it was almost unsettling. He had an accent-less monotone voice that seemed incredibly uninterested in everything. His accusatory eyes added onto the uneasiness of his aura as he scanned the room. The stranger's vacant green eyes landed on Logan, “I am here, for you.”
Their eyes remained locked together as Logan stood from the couch. There was something about this man that he didn't trust. But that isn't saying a whole lot because Logan doesn't trust anyone without good reason anymore.
The TVA hadn't contacted them in months, other than to give Logan a new suit a week after they saved the timeline. Perhaps Logan had overstayed his welcome and this man was supposed to send him back home. Back to where everyone hated him, where he had nothing. And maybe he deserved to go back, he's done nothing to deserve this simple domestic life. Still, Logan glared at the man, he was going to fight for his right to stay here. This was his home. He wanted to be selfish and continue living here.
Wade seemed to be having the exact same sentiment. Out of the corner of his eye, Logan watched him stand and point a dramatically accusatory finger at the mystery agent. “I don't know where you've been Mr. Probably should have been a suit model, but Logan is allowed to be here”
“Yes I am aware, I am not here to take him away. I have a job for him.”
“A job? Like a superhero gig?” Wade put his hand down, excitement growing.
“If that helps you make sense of things, then yes.” The man gave a slight nod. Small wrinkles formed around his mouth with a sour expression as he looked at Wade, a well hidden look of disgust.
“Well why didn't you say so! We'll grab our stuff!” Wade was almost beaming. It had been a long time since either of them got to do something big, ‘something with plot’ Wade would say. He had been getting bored of just beating up thugs every few weeks. That boredom is probably why he jumped at the chance without asking any other questions.
“I do not need you.” The agent spoke bluntly, causing Wade to freeze his movements towards the bedroom.
“What.” Logan scowled, using his expression as a warning to the stranger to choose his next words very carefully. Neither of them were above stabbing a TVA agent, Logan might actually enjoy it.
“I only need him for this task.”
“Well that's vague as hell and only a little bit hurtful. Who the hell even are you? Some Paradox wannabe? Newsflash dickwad, he at least had the decency to say I was special before royally fucking me over.” Wade crossed his arms in a huff, watching the stranger cringe at the mention of Paradox.
“No.” He spat, disgust ever growing on his features. The men exhaled a deep breath, and his face returned to his neutral state before continuing. “My name is Boone, if you must know. Paradox is the incompetent fool that I am filling in for until they find a permanent replacement to oversee this timeline. I am not here to cause trouble, gentleman, I am only here because I have the authority to ask for his assistance.”
“What a fancy way of saying ‘I own you’” Wade chuckled, “You haven't even told us what the mission is- you can't just show up and whisk away my favorite honey badger.”
“Wait hold up, why am I the only one on this mystery list- do you fucking know who he is?”
The pair clearly had separate priorities. Boone didn't seem to be in a rush to answer either of them.
“It is a covert mission, and his methods are…unorthodox.”
“If I go, he goes.” If he didn't know any better, Wade could have sworn that he heard a growl hidden under those words. The merc immediately packed that away to deal with later.
“I only require you .”
“Did you not hear me bub.” Logan clenched his fists tight, and Wade could see the tips of his claws coming out- which meant it was time to intervene.
“Oookay-” Wade took a step in between the two, lightly placing a hand on Logan's chest as if to hold him back. He didn’t even have to see his roommates face to know that Logan was sneering at the agent. "Before my friend here gets stab happy, what can you tell us, or rather- tell him.”
“You will be heavily compensated for your efforts. As well as assisting me and the rest of the TVA in taking down a major threat before it becomes an even bigger issue. However this operation is rather delicate in nature, so I will only require his cooperation.”
Wade moved his hand to rest on Logan's shoulder as he turned his attention to the rather angry man. The guy was clearly pissing them both off, using him as a human pincushion was seeming incredibly appealing at the moment. However, Wade didn’t want to be the reason that Logan didn’t help someone. That would weigh too heavily on both of their already frayed mental states. Wade gave him a small look before turning back to look at the stranger in their living room.
“He’ll do it.”
“What? Like hell-”
“ But, ” Wade interjected loudly, a rather chilling smile spread across his lips. “If you take him back or send him to the void, I just so happen to be besties with your boss! And I’m sure I could get her to look the other way while personally dice you into pieces.
“Wade, I’m not goin without you.” The Merc could almost see the sad downturned dog ears on Logan's head as the two locked eyes. He didn’t want this, hell neither did Wade. But Wade would be damned if he got in the way of Logan doing something important again.
“Sure ya are, peanut!” A forced smile was still plastered on his lips, in an attempt to hide how much his words were betraying him. “C’mon it’ll be fun! Plus you can finally get some time away from me for a bit.”
Logan could almost hear his heart break. He searched the others' eyes for an answer, an excuse, anything that would hint as to why Wade of all people was pushing him away. The merc had quite literally kidnapped him from his own shithole of a universe and made sure that he stuck around after the final battle was over. Logan swore that what they had was good, so why was he pushing him away. Sure it had been a while since he’d stretched his legs on a mission, and yes people could be in danger. But he didn’t want to go without Wade.
“Gentlemen, I do not have time for this. This is not a request, my team will take you by force if need be.” Boone interrupted, his voice monotone and unfeeling.
“Fine.” Logan finally yielded. Turning quickly away from Wade's gaze. His roommate almost seemed excited to get rid of him, maybe he had messed up somewhere. Maybe Wade was bored of him. Or at the very least tired of him. Whatever the case, it seemed like Logan had work to do. “I’ll get my suit.”
Boone gave a small nod as he watched Logan disappear into the bedroom. His wandering eyes scanned the shitty apartment, and noticeably grimaced when he accidentally locked eyes with Wade. A sense of disgust and uneasiness washing over him, which meant it was time to leave the apartment- hopefully for good.
Wade felt himself let out a deep breath the moment Boone stepped through the portal. Something about the agent made Wade feel uncomfortable in his own home, which wasn’t that hard to do when he wasn’t wearing his mask. “Well isn’t he all sunshine and rainbows”
It didn’t take long before Logan walked out of their shared room, donned in his new yellow and blue suit. The TVA did their best to remake it just like his old suit, which neither Logan or Wade had asked them to do. An orange box had just shown up to their door one day with a perfect fitting suit neatly folded inside. They did add some details that weren’t there before. Each pant leg had a thin black stripe going from the hip all the way down to the ankle, as well as a thin red band on the wrist of each glove. Wade was completely giddy when he first saw the small details. He had made at least ten jokes about how they added his colors to the Wolverine suit, not that Logan was listening (or counting) or anything. The box didn’t have a note or anything attached but something told both of them that those colors were chosen on purpose. Logan honestly liked the added detail, it reminded him that he belonged somewhere. If he were any braver, he would have made a joke about how they needed to add blue and yellow somewhere on the Deadpool suit. But he kept his mouth shut, knowing he’d never hear the end of it if said out loud.
Neither man spoke as Logan made his way to the still open portal, both could feel the tension growing. So many things needed to be said, but they both thought it best to stay silent. Which was never a good thing with Wade. Wade being silent meant he was getting in his own head again. Logan wanted to stay and talk to him until he was tossing around every sexual innuendo he could think of, with that signature smirk on his face.
It would be okay.
Logan thought that Wade was kicking him out, and Wade thought Logan would be happy to finally get some time away from him.
It would be okay.
“Don’t have too much fun without me Wolvie!” Wade teased, the twinge of despair in his voice did not go unnoticed by Logan. It only made him want to stay even more. He honestly hated seeing Wade sad or upset, it killed him. But that same asshole had seemingly kicked him to the curb with zero explanation. Not to mention the rage he felt when he saw the look of pure disdain and disgust written all over Boones dumb generic face whenever he looked at Wade.
New plan: see what the hell Boone wanted, tell him to go fuck himself (and probably break at least one of his bones), go back home, and get Wade a burrito from that shitty restaurant that was only a few blocks away from their apartment (the one with the C health code rating, it was Wades favorite). Yeah, that sounded like a much better use of his time then whatever TVA bullshit he was getting roped into.
“See you in a bit bub.”
The portal closed behind him the second he stepped through, leaving Wade in a sudden uncomfortable silence with nothing but his own thoughts.
