Chapter Text
He was asleep.
Or at least, he pretended to be.
...
He was not going to open his eyes.
...
He was not going to acknowledge... that.
"Izuku? Sweetie? Still asleep?" Inko peaked into her son's room, giggling as she saw the clear sign of fake sleep. "Baby?" Inko spoke again, sitting on Izuku's bed. Izuku peaked open, staring up at his mother, but the strange thing was behind her, causing Izuku to throw the covers over his head.
"Mommy! It's still there!" Izuku whined, and his mother tutted in sympathy. "Oh baby, I don't see anything... Are you sure it's there?" Inko asked, trying to take the covers off of Izuku. He looked up, and the thing was leaning over Inko, causing Izuku to yelp in terror, ducking over the covers again.
Inko sighed, patting Izuku's head through the covers. "Sweetie, you have to get ready for kindergarten... You can change in my room," Inko suggested and Izuku shot up, rushing out of his room as Inko laughed. The woman stood up, grabbing Izuku's clothes, and headed towards her own bedroom where Izuku was waiting.
The thing stared at the two as they left.
----------
Izuku saw them everywhere. He knew no one else saw these things, only him. He could see spirits. He kept his head pointed down, avoiding the gazes of the spirits and the living as he made his way to the kindergarten grounds. Izuku sat outside against the wall, staring off over the playground. Thankfully, due to his quirk still not manifesting, kids started ignoring him, unfortunately, that included Katsuki.
So no one was around as Izuku leaned against the wall, tears slipping from his eyes. No one else saw these things, but they were right there! Izuku knew his mother was just humoring him, she probably thought he was going crazy! But that thing was right there! Looking at him through the bushes of the playground!
His head shot up as he heard footsteps approaching him, and to his relief, it was just Kacchan.
"K-Kacchan!" Izuku hissed as he started sobbing, but Kacchan only scoffed. "What, Deku? Finally found out your quirkless?" Katsuki mocked, but Izuku just shook his head, and grabbed Kacchan's hand. "What the heck Deku-" Katsuki started but Izuku interrupted him. "Kacchan! I think I'm going crazy..." Izuku sobbed.
"No one else sees them!" Izuku sobbed out, pointing at the playground. Katsuki turned his head, trying to see what Izuku was pointing at. "Stop being stupid Deku! There's nothing!" Katsuki grumbled, shaking Deku by the shoulders.
"See!? No one else sees them!" Izuku yelled, grabbing at his shirt and looking down. "They're everywhere..." Izuku mumbled, causing Katsuki to scoff. "Weirdo, do you seriously believe in ghosts!?" Kacchan mocked.
Izuku stilled, and before Katsuki could mock him further, he looked down, only to see a hand wrapped around Izuku's ankle.
Izuku's eyes were pinched shut, and he was mumbling "It's not real," like a mantra. Katsuki's eyes widened at the sight before him, he quickly stepped back a few steps, tripping and falling on his bottom. "Wh-wh-wh.. whaaat?! Deku! W-what is that?!" Katsuki exclaimed, pointing his finger at the hand around Izuku's ankle.
Izuku shook his head and started violently shaking his foot around. "Y-you see it!? It's real! Ew, ew, ew it's real!?" Izuku yelled, falling over as he tried to get the hand off of him. "Deku! Get rid of it! Get rid of it!!" Katsuki yelled as he frantically scrambled back. Izuku yelled as he finally got rid of the hand, holding onto his ankle were it used to be.
Katsuki stared at Izuku in disbelief, "D-Deku...? What was that..." The boy's voice was shaky, and Izuku just whined. "I knew they were real! I knew it!" He complained, wiping frantically at he leg. "Ew it touched me! It felt so weird!!" Izuku complained.
"How did that even happen!?" Katsuki hissed, and Izuku continued shaking his head. "Why did it touch me!?" Izuku hissed, patting at his leg.
"T-they're everywhere! Why do I see them!?" Izuku mumbled, looking around frantically. He fell back, against something fluffy. Izuku looked up, and a white and green fox stared back down at him. The fox blinked, then tilted it's head and helped Izuku up to his feet. "Modern humans will call it a quirk." The fox spoke, then sat down, "Call it a conjure quirk, mayhaps?"
The fox disappeared in a puff of smoke, then appeared in front of Izuku, staring up at him. "...Quirk?" Izuku mumbled, causing Katsuki to make an odd noise. "Huh!? The nerd isn't quirkless!?" Katsuki hissed, looking at Izuku. "You got a quirk!?" Katsuki reconfirmed.
"W-what even are you?" Izuku spoke, tilting his head in confusion.
"Conjurors have guides that bridge the world of the living with the world of spirits, and I am your guide, your bridge, I'll be you're gateway into communicating, witnessing and summoning spirits" The fox spoke, then tilted its head. "Ah, and a name is welcome."
"Deku can talk to ghosts!?" Katsuki chimed in, and the fox nodded. Izuku shook his head, patting his cheeks as he was thinking. "This is crazy..." he mumbled, then looked back at the fox.
"Umidasu...I think I'll call you Umidasu..." Izuku spoke, and the fox nodded affirmatively. Katsuki was still relatively confused by the whole ordeal. Katsuki then glanced at Izuku, nodding slightly. "It's... uh, Umidasu is a good name, Deku..." Katsuki spoke, and Izuku nodded happily. "T-thanks..." "I agree, Umidasu fits my identity well."
----------
Izuku's hand was gripping onto his uniform shirt, he hated the new attention he was recieving. The teacher was celebrating his new quirk, and the rest of the kids kept poking and prodding him, one boy even pulled on Umidasu's tail, causing the fox to snap it's teeth at the child.
Izuku held onto Umidasu, trying to get away from the crowd. So far, all the class knew was he had a weird fox as a quirk, that's it. There was no way Izuku was going to tell everyone he meets he sees dead people. After a while, he was left alone, the children having returned to their own devices.
The boy sighed as he sat down in the corner, a small nook he favoured. Umidasu sat next to him as leaned against the bookshelf. Izuku carefully lifted his hand, looking at the fox, then slowly lowered his hand and thread his fingers through the fox's fur. Katsuki came closer, and sat next to Izuku. "So you finally got your stupid quirk, huh?" Katsuki scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest.
Izuku looked at Umidasu, then back at Katsuki. "Kacchan... why are you so mean..." the boy mumbled, but Katsuki just chuckled. "You're just sensitive, Deku!" Izuku whined, glaring at Katsuki with unamusement. "So mean..."
Katsuki laughed, and Izuku couldn't help but giggle too. The two talked on, Izuku's new quirk quickly just becoming another quirk and losing all attention.
