Work Text:

Mitsuba stood nervously at the school gates as he toyed with his sleeve. Today marked the three months Kou and Mitsuba have been together for. The sun was setting, making the sky a beautiful sight to see.

As he waited, he heard footsteps. He turned around to see Kou running up to him with a grin on his face.

“Hey Mitsuba!” Kou yelled, waving at him.

“Took you long enough! Who knows what would’ve happened if someone as cute as me had to wait any longer here alone! There’s weirdos walking these streets, ya know!!” Mitsuba complained, fake tears spilling out as Kou stood in front of him.

Kou raised an eyebrow. “Mitsuba, no one can see you.”

Mitsuba scoffed at Kou. “Anyone can! It’s not just you and your lame exorcist powers or whatever!”

“Right, right…” Kou sighed. “Anyway, what’s the surprise you planned?”

Before he could reply, Mitsuba had noticed something poking out of Kou’s pocket. He decided to ignore it, though, and looked back at Kou.

“Oh yeah, follow me!” Mitsuba said, taking Kou’s hand and leading him away from the school grounds. He led Kou to a nearby park, which had a small picnic setup by Mitsuba himself, accompanied by both of their favorite snacks.

When they arrived, Kou’s eyes widened in delight. The park was peaceful, with a blanket spread out under a cherry blossom tree. “This looks amazing!” he exclaimed, letting go of Mitsuba’s hand and taking in the scene.

“Of course it’s amazing! I’m great at everything~” Mitsuba replied, having a proud look on his face. He was a bit disappointed that Kou let go of his hand, but didn’t comment on it.

“..Random question, but did Nene help you with this?” Kou asked, glancing at the setup.

Mitsuba turned to look at Kou, a scoff coming out of his mouth. “No way! I would never ask radish-senpai to help me out on something I can *clearly* do myself!”

“Well yeah, but this looks like something she’d do. Along with your ideas, of course.” Kou replied.

Mitsuba didn’t say anything in return.

“..She helped you, didn’t she?”

“..W-Well what does it matter! It was my idea! She just did a few things..!”

“So why’d you deny-”

“Just shut up and sit down! I’m not letting my beautiful creation go to waste because of you and your stupid questions!!”

Kou sighed and obliged, walking closer to the setup and sitting down on the blanket. Mitsuba followed him, sitting beside Kou.

Mitsuba then grabbed the basket that was near him, pulling out the snacks that he got for him and Kou.

“Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting you to remember my favorites..” Kou said, looking directly at the snacks as a small smile formed on his face.

“Of course I did, you were eating them one day and for some reason went on a lame rant about how good they are and how utterly blessed you are to have them. It was so annoying I couldn’t forget about it.” Mitsuba replied, sighing as he recalled the moment.

“I went on a rant about them..?” Kou said, a confused look on his face as he tried to remember.

“Oh my god, don’t tell me you’re so stupid you can’t even remember that!” Mitsuba whined.

Kou was about to speak up before Mitsuba quickly shushed him. “Don’t try defending yourself, ginger. Just eat, your stupidity is making me wanna bang my head against the tree.”

“Fine, fine..” Kou sighed, grabbing one of the snacks and unpacking it before taking a bite.

“So, how is it?” Mitsuba asked, watching as Kou chewed and swallowed the food.

“..It’s good, nothing special. Aren’t you gonna eat as well? I saw you packed a couple of things for yourself.” Kou pointed at the other set of snacks as he spoke, making Mitsuba turn his head to look at it.

“Oh, right.” Mitsuba replied, grabbing one of them and taking it out of the package.

Kou and Mitsuba ate as they talked, going about random things that happened at school to insulting each other (as one lovely couple does). Soon, all the snacks were gone, and all there was left was two boys laughing as they recalled a funny moment from school.

Kou leaned back on the blanket after his fits of laughter stopped, looking up at the cherry blossoms swaying in the gentle breeze. “You know, I’ve really loved these past three months,” he said softly.

Mitsuba felt his cheeks heat up as he also leaned back on the blanket. “Me too. It’s been..fun, having you around.”

Kou turned to face him. “Y’know Mitsuba, you make me really happy. You…mean a lot to me.”

Mitsuba’s heart raced at Kou’s words as he replied with a teasing comment to distract himself. “Really? Getting all serious like this? You must really be dumb, huh?”

Kou smiled, leaning closer. “For you, yeah.”

Mitsuba was about to reply when Kou suddenly sat up.

“I’ve got something for you.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, handmade bracelet. “I made this for you. Took me a while but I got the hang of it!”

Mitsuba’s eyes widened as he took the bracelet from Kou’s hand wordlessly, butterflies bursting in his stomach.

“Just a little reminder that you’re important to me.” Kou said, his cheeks turning pink as he nervously looked up to the sky.

Mitsuba slipped the bracelet onto his wrist, feeling the warmth of Kou’s gesture. “I..I like it. Thank you.”

“I’m glad!!” Kou replied, a wide grin on his face as he looked at Mitsuba.

“..Could use more cuteness, though. But since you clearly don’t know anything about it, it’s obvious that you wouldn’t be able to make it into a bracelet!” Mitsuba giggled, smirking at Kou.

“Hey! You said you liked it!” Kou said.

“I’m not saying I hate it! Just some advice for later..” Mitsuba grinned.

“Dude, it was my first time. What do you expect?”

“That’s what she sa-”

“OH MY GOD MITSUBA, REALLY?”

Mitsuba bursted out laughing as Kou stared with shock at him, the moment too funny to not laugh at. Kou soon started laughing with him too, the shock soon turning into fits of laughter.

Soon, the laughter died down, and Mitsuba and Kou decided to cuddle up against the cherry blossom tree, watching as the petals slowly descended to the ground.

“Hey, Mitsuba?” Kou whispered, staring at the view in front of him. “Thank you for everything.”

“..You’re welcome.” Mitsuba replied, his voice gentle. “You better repay me though, because this took a lot of work!”

Kou laughed as he pulled Mitsuba closer to him. “Yeah, yeah, whatever.”

Kou then pressed a kiss to Mitsuba’s head, causing Mitsuba to have a smile on his face.

“I..I love you, Kou.” Mitsuba said softly, looking at Kou with love and adoration in his eyes.

“Love you too, Mitsuba.” Kou replied, looking back at Mitsuba as he smiled at him.

They then turned their heads to the sun, watching together as it dipped below the horizon, the cherry blossoms dancing in the wind around them. It was a perfect scenery for them. Cuddled under the tree, they both held each other tight, taking in the moments of this beautiful occasion. Everything will be okay, as long as they’re together. <3
