Legend was taking a moment away from the group, a breather away from everyone else. It wasn’t exactly uncommon for all of them to need a moment away from the rest of the group for various reasons. The general rule was whenever any of them did need a moment they stayed at least within shouting distance of wherever they set camp and any further exploration required someone else to come with. Legend just wanted to write out some letters without Wind, or worse Warriors, sticking their noses in his business.
They had camped near a river, Time and Twilight were set on fishing for dinner. Four wanted to get some gear maintenance done and frankly they had traveled far enough today. Tomorrow they would be able to reach the Wetlands Stable according to Wild. Thankfully they day hadn’t graced them with any rain or storms yet so they were hoping to try and enjoy traveling through Wild’s Hyrule while they could.
He was in the middle of writing his second letter when he heard a shout from the direction of camp. He was immediately on his feet, running toward camp while digging through his bag to find his bow. At the very least something that would work at a distance. A fire rod, ice rod, even a hookshot for goddess sake. He cursed internally, why did he pack so many things? His hand caught something, why did he even think bringing his magnetic gloves was a good idea? His other hand caught what he thought was a hookshot, he pulled both items out of his bag hoping that at least his hookshot would buy him enough time to find something else. He cursed again when he saw he’d actually grabbed his switch hook.
He stumbled across camp, magnetic gloves in one hand, switch hook in the other and panicked. A quick glance gave him a view of several lazolfos and and a large darknut from his era attacking the others. Time and Warriors were handling the darknut with Wind supporting them with quick cuts to the things lege, but of course the damn thing was infected.
A stomp from the thing caused Wind to tumble into Time’s legs, thankfully he didn’t flinch, but he was distracted trying to help the younger hero up so he wouldn’t step on the kid. The darknut had its massive ax lifted, Warriors didn’t have time to draw its attention to prevent the blow. Legend didn’t think about putting on his gloves. He lifted his hands, palms outstretched, planted his feet, and urged them to pull. Thank the goddess for Time’s plate armor. Time, who was holding the back of Wind’s tunic, stumbled back as the gloves’ power got a grip on him and dragged him swiftly backward as the ax swung. Time acted quickly pulling Wind close to protect him as they were both dragged away from the fray.
Legend released the gloves grip on Time when they were both a safe distance away from battle and the man only stumbled slightly as he was released. There wasn’t any time for either to stop and ask questions because Warriors was now fighting the darknut alone. The others were finishing up fighting the lizolfos but between injuries, Warriors being caught off guard by Time’s escape, and the darknut being ready to swing its ax again they wouldn’t be able to help him in time.
The darknut was between Warriors and the water, Legend wasn’t one for crazy ideas but the less time he had to think the more chaotic his strategies got. Legend shot his switch hook and it quickly reached its mark, cinching onto Warriors’ waist causing the man to start. Before he could react he and Legend had swapped places, he dropped the switch hook and heard several shouts. His magnetic gloves were primed to push now though and the darknut was covered in metal, so he lifted his hands and pushed. The darknut’s ax swung but it had already been pushed too far out of reach, unable to fight against the gloves’ power. When the darknut was above the river he released the power and the darknut fell, sinking swiftly under the surface.
Legend’s shoulders sunk as he sighed in relief, breaking the loud silence of his shocked companions. Each of them seemingly trying and failing to figure out what to say, he was expecting an eventual lecture from Twilight. Wind broke the silence first though.
“What the fuck was that!?” The kid shouted as he ran up to Legend. Legend could see from behind him that Warriors and Time were checking each other over for injuries. Though it seemed like Legend got to them both on time. “You somehow dragged me and Time away, then poof, you’re suddenly where Wars is! How the fuck did you do that!?”
“Language,” was muttered halfheartedly by both Time and Twilight, but they were both a little too shocked still to put heart into it.
“Magnetic gloves and Switch Hook.” He seid, suddenly remembered to pick up the ladder of the two that he’d dropped. “Some of the odder things I own but still useful. The gloves are about to push and pull away most metal objects. After pushing something it changes to pulling something and vice versa. Time and that damned thing are covered in metal. And the switch hook just swaps my place with any object I happen to grab: pots, rocks, and in this case Wars’ waist.”
“That’s what that was!?” The captain shouted, a few light chuckles breaking out. The post battle tension wearing down. Everyone seemed to have gotten away with minimal injuries. Four taking his hand holding the switch hook out of curiosity, his eyes almost seemed purple as he examined both items.
“Wow that’s almost like my magnesis rune, but it’s never really worked on living things.” Wild cut in. “Then again my monsters don’t really wear metal armor so I never really thought to try it.” Which was kinds surprising considering Wild regularly used stasis on objects to projectile launch himself into monster camps.
“Those are weird items, where’d you get them?” Wind’s face was funny twisted in thought as he peered over Four’s shoulder. “Wait, do you have other weird stuff like this?” Wind face brightened looking at him with almost puppy-dog eyes. He knew the kid was hoping for something fun to mess with, but Legend could feel the adrenaline leaving him and he’s sure some of the others wouldn’t appreciate any more excitement today. But then again those wouldn’t require too much more excitement to show off.
“First the gloves are from Holodrum, and the switch hook is from Labrynna. Second I do have another odd item but,” Legend turned to Wild, “there any monster that tend to be across the river nearby.” Wild looked confused for a moment before looking at the map on his slate and frowning.
“I don’t think there are any camps across the water nearby, except north of the sable, but there could be other infected monsters nearby. Do they have to be across the river?” He asked looking a little confused.
“If we don’t want to fight, yes.” He answered confidently, he could tell the others were getting curious now. He put his switch hook away, followed by his gloves, digging around for what he was looking for. It didn’t take too long to pull out his Seed Shooter and a bag of carefully sealed scent seeds. “I mean if they're more lizalfos, then it may not work as well, but scent seeds and seed shooter.” He said as he lifted each thig respectively, Wild reached for the bad of seeds to inspect them but Legend quickly shoved them back in his bag.
Wild made a noise of offensive, but Legend held a hand out, “first they only grow in Labrynna and Holodrum so I don’t exactly have an unlimited supply.” Wild seemed sheepish at that, scratching the back of his head with his hand, “second, is their namesake so unless you want to sleep in a tree far away from camp tonight, I don’t recommend playing around with them.” Now the curiosity was back, cautious now but there.
Time hummed in thought for a moment, “we should probably at least get a little further along anyway, since we were ambushed here chances are it won’t be safe to camp out here. If we happen to come across a situation where you can show off your item in a way that won’t cause trouble then feel free to.” Legend rolled his eyes, sure sounds like you’re curious too old man. The other groaned about having to move camp but Time wasn’t wrong so there wasn’t any argument.
As they walked Wind and Wild kept an eye out for monsters, Four and Hyrule walked beside him, Time, Warriors, and Twilight were ahead of the group looking for a good place to stop for the night, and poor Sky lagged only slightly behind tired from battle and their earlier travel. “Theoretically you could probably use those gloves on someone other than Time,” Four said and he sounded too sure of what he was saying for the theoretically at the beginning of his sentence.
“Go on?” Legend replied, interested in how he would continue. Hyrule on the other side of him also seemed curious to see what the smithy had to say.
“Well Time wears plate armor so of course those gloves work on him.” Odd start, the smithy most certainly encountered an item similar to his magnetic gloves. “Sky, Warriors, and Twilight were chainmail under their tunics. That and Wild has several armor sets stored in his slate that have metal. Remember how they warned us about metal in storms of his when we first came to his Hyrule”
That was a good point, Legend gave a thoughtful look to Sky who was a little further behind looking dead on his feet. They weren’t traveling fast since they weren’t planning to go too far but the first hero looked ready to fall asleep on his feet. Legend didn’t take too long to dig through his bag, if Four was familiar with the item he shouldn’t have trouble using them, so he gave the shorter man the gloves. Four looked surprised but he gestured back to Sky, “if you don’t have trouble walking backwards for a while, feel free to test your theory.”
Four did just that, using the magnetic gloves to latch onto Sky. Sky startled and flailed his arms as he lost balance, but soon realized what was happening when he looked ahead. Legend never really moved around while using the gloves since they were best used on the magnetic rocks in Holodrum, but the Smith made it look easy. His pace didn’t falter and Sky laughed slightly as he was dragged closer to them. Though Four did have to release him because his shorter stature didn’t give him enough speed to outrun the pull, Legend didn’t tell him that the gloves wouldn’t pull the taller man any further than his outstretched palms. Sky gave his thanks and at least tried to keep pace with them.
Wind and Wild shouted, catching everyone’s attention but they were excitedly pointing at a group of bokoblins across the river. One of the monsters that heard the shouting attempted to throw a rock at the two which disappeared into the flowing water. Legend huffed in exasperation, rolling his eyes, but never the less loaded a scent seed into his seed shooter. The others watched with a mixture of excitement and curiosity. Legend quickly found a good enough target, a rock jutting out in the middle of the river, aimed and fired the seed.
It had been awhile since he’s used the seed shooter but the scent seed quickly hit its mark, breaking open on the rock. There were a few confused noises he heard but the monsters on the other side of the river caught the scent. Squealing in excitement the bokoblins scrambled to the source of the smell, completely unaware of their surroundings and swiftly found themselves being swallowed by the flowing waters.
“Holy shit,” Wind said in shock, the others didn’t bother correcting him on his language. Then the smell hit them, Wind’s face scrunched up when he smelled it and he quickly covered his nose. He caught a few others also covering their noses, Time was trying to look unaffected and he was failing. Four looked like he was personally offended. “Holy shit,” Wind said again, shriller this time no one corrected him out of agreement.
“I thought hinoxes smelled bad,” added Wild, who wasn’t covering their nose but still didn’t look unphased. Legend also scrunched up his nose but he knew well enough that leaving was the best way to avoid the smell. Scent seeds not only smelled putrid but they were potent and the scent lingered for days afterwards. Not that he knew from personal experience.
Then a series of curses caught his attention and he turned to Twilight, who looked like he was gonna be sick. Twilight’s face was screwed up with disgust and he was looking a little green. Oh right Wolfy. Twilight quickly turned and fled, following Four at his heels. The rest of them quickly followed after, breathing a sigh of relief when they finally escaped the horrible scent.
Twilight turned to him with a fierce look, “let’s never use those again.” Legend agreed but frankly if he had to he’d be using the scent seed long before he used the others.
“That's enough asking Legend what weird items he has for today.” Time added and nobody argued with him.
